The pace of change in health care has never been greater, and Children’s Minnesota takes very seriously our role in being champions for children. We have an incredible opportunity as a leader in pediatrics to design and drive advancements in health care for kids.

Support from an engaged community helps sustain and advance our mission. In 2016, our hospitals and clinics cared for 133,793* patients across Minnesota and the surrounding region. All had access to world-class care, supportive services and exceptional facilities designed with kids in mind. Generous gifts from key partners accelerated the renovations and openings of several clinical spaces alongside the rollout of programs such as the Children’s Comfort Promise.

As we look to the future, Children’s Minnesota will continue to develop innovative and game-changing initiatives in the field of pediatric health care. With the recent launch of our open fetal surgery program – becoming one of only a dozen centers to perform corrective surgeries in utero – and the evolution of our critical care transport program to reach kids of all ages, our goal is to ensure that all families have access to the care they need and deserve.

Your support keeps us strong and a critical asset in the community. Thank you for your passion and commitment in championing the health needs of kids.

CHILDREN’S MINNESOTA CREATES AWARENESS AND PROVIDES INPATIENT CARE FOR KIDS WITH EATING DISORDERS

In the United States, 20 million women and 10 million men will be impacted by a clinically significant eating disorder1, making it more prevalent than acute lymphoblastic leukemia or breast cancer. Philanthropic support helps Children’s Center for the Treatment of Eating Disorders (CTED) program provide the most comprehensive medical, psychiatric and nutritional care for patients being treated for an eating disorder.

In August 2016, we dedicated The Goven Family Eating Disorders and Nutritional Stabilization Unit, an inpatient unit located inside our St. Paul hospital. This unit serves children and young adults up to age 20. As the region’s only pediatric hospital-based program, patients have access to immediate care and support from a range of clinicians and staff who are specially trained in this field. We’ve adopted an empowering and collaborative approach that keeps patient families tightly involved in treatment and recovery, resulting in an average inpatient stay for critically-ill eating disorder patients that’s 10-12 days, compared to residential treatment programs that can last up to six months.

And thanks to the generosity of individuals and corporate partners, we also launched a successful Education Series, hosting three events in 2016 that dispelled myths pertaining to eating disorders. The events were attended by many members

of our community, including pediatricians, parents, mental health professionals and more. The series has increased awareness, engagement and referrals, with a result of higher patient volumes after each event.

We are already seeing success stories. Kathleen, a patient who received treatment in July 2016, says: “Children’s Minnesota truly was my miracle. They saved my life. My journey is not over and some days are still a challenge, but I am continuing to move forward. I am confident that with the support of my family, friends and care team, I will be able to handle anything that comes my way. And the best part? I know that Children’s always has my back.”

Due to a desire to help kids with eating disorders, long-time Children’s

supporters Greg and Jane Goven provided a lead gift to the CTED program. Together with their adult children, Tami and Chad, their gift has not only elevated the program at Children’s, but created visibility on the international stage. The Govens also give generously of their time. Greg has been a member of the Children’s Minnesota Foundation board since 2011 and served as chair from 2015-2016. Tami co-chaired a task force to accelerate generosity to the CTED program.

JOINING TOGETHER FOR KIDS

TEAM SUPERSTARSParents like Andy Gorski inspire us every day. Andy is a member of Children’s Team Superstars, a group of individuals who are passionate about running – and Children’s Minnesota. Andy runs for his daughter, Abigail, whose heart condition required surgery when she was just three months old. Abigail is now a thriving seven-year-old and her dad’s most enthusiastic cheerleader. In its second year, Team Superstars raised over $100,000 – nearly twice the amount raised in 2015. Eighty-one runners competed in four races this past year, including the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon and 10 Mile plus Grandma’s Marathon and Half Marathon in Duluth. To learn more, visit childrensMN.org/TeamSuperstars.

CORPORATE PARTNERS Along with nearly 50 corporations in the community, we celebrated the 20th annual –and final – Great Clips Golf Tournament. The event raised nearly $4 million over its history for Children’s Family

Needs Fund, helping to reduce the financial burden on families during their hospital stay. Great Clips has partnered with Children’s for more than two decades: hosting an annual cut-a-thon, funding capital projects and participating as a sponsor for Children’s Star Gala. Support from companies like Great Clips goes a long way in helping Children’s to innovate, research or provide needed services to patients and families. To learn more, visit childrensMN.org/CorporateGiving.

HOSPITAL ASSOCIATIONSThe dedicated support of our hospital associations, groups of volunteers whose sole purpose is to raise money for Children’s, have helped us become the pediatric health system we are today. Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) has raised nearly $22 million since 1933, and raised a record $120,000 at the CHA Storyland Gala in 2016. Proceeds from the event benefited the infant and early childhood mental health program at Children’s. And since 1958, Children’s Association – Minneapolis has raised over

$12 million, with volunteers staffing the Storybook Gift Shop and donors financially supporting our in-house TV station, Star Studio. After almost 60 years of support, these volunteers and donors have left a lasting legacy. Children’s will be forever grateful.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENTDid you know, 80 percent of a baby’s brain development occurs by age three? In Minnesota, 275,000 children are in this critical stage of life. Children’s Minnesota launched a campaign focused on language development, face-to-face time and unstructured play. We leveraged partnerships with the City of Minneapolis’s “Talking is Teaching” initiative and the Minnesota Children’s Museum to reinforce this message. We also featured Dr. Mike Troy, behavioral specialist, and Dr. Gigi Chawla, pediatrician, in several videos and on-air segments to provide tips and tools to caregivers. Healthy development happens in the home and community, which means we can all play a role in supporting a strong start. Learn more at amazingis.org.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

We are fortunate to have individuals, partners and community advocates who are deeply invested in the mission of Children’s. The following stories showcase some of the many passions and initiatives that brought together our community in 2016 to support the health and well-being of kids.

7

COMMUNITY BENEFITFrom treating and preventing illness to advocating for policy changes, at Children’s Minnesota we strive to be every family’s essential partner in raising healthier kids. While many families come to us, we also bring Children’s to them. Staff volunteers represented Children’s Minnesota at more than 25 community events across the Twin Cities, including Somali Independence Day, Native American Day Celebration and Open Streets Minneapolis, reaching almost 10,000 community members. We aim to put kids first and embrace the diverse cultures within our community. To learn more, visit childrensMN.org/Advocacy.

STAR CONNECTIONSSeven-year-old Children’s Minnesota patient, Obadiah Gamble, is one talented kid. When he posted a video to YouTube asking Minnesota Vikings quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater, to come to his birthday party, it quickly went viral. Not only did Teddy visit, but Obadiah has

continued to share his gift with Children’s patients and staff by recording additional videos. He’s since had opportunities to engage with both the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Wild: meeting the Vikings team at an offseason workout and announcing “Let’s play hockey!” at the start of a Wild game. We are fortunate to have committed pro athletes and teams who care about kids and fulfill the wishes of our patients, at the hospital or on the field.

As a baby, Obadiah spent a lot of time at Children’s in Minneapolis, undergoing many surgeries, including ear tubes. He continues to see his team at yearly check-ups and is a big fan of the staff there. He especially loves hanging out with The Dude from Children’s Star Studio.

“ Obadiah is a magnet! He can win over a room faster than you can say ‘amazing’.”

– Vanessa, Obadiah’s mom

A multi-disciplinary clinical team joins together to practice a real-life medical scenario in the Michael and Judith Wright Family Pediatric Simulation Center.

INNOVATIVE SIMULATION CENTER OPENS ONSITE AT CHILDREN’S MINNESOTA FOR REAL-LIFE TRAINING IN LOW-RISK ENVIRONMENT

When it comes to caring for kids, experience matters. Simulation is one of the best ways for health care professionals to practice real-life hospital scenarios in a safe and realistic environment, without compromising the health of a child. The goal is to ensure teams are able to increase communication and coordination as well as develop skills that they’ll need when the stakes are high.

In July 2016, through the generous support of our community, we celebrated the grand opening of the Michael and Judith Wright Family Pediatric Simulation Center. This center brings a whole new dimension to simulation at Children’s. A fully-equipped replica of a Children’s Minnesota intensive care unit room is located within our Minneapolis hospital, allowing doctors, nurses and other health care team members to practice clinical scenarios and procedures with minimal interruption to their work schedules.

Children’s has the only pediatric simulation center in Minnesota and the only pediatric simulation center in the region that meets the rigorous accreditation standards of the Society of Simulation for Healthcare.

The Michael and Judith Wright Family Pediatric Simulation Center will continue to significantly increase the opportunities for our clinicians to repetitively practice

responses to pediatric medical procedures and trauma crises, including new areas of service like transport. Christopher Bailey, a Clinical Educator in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) says, “The opportunity to have a do-over or mulligan in our profession is rare. We learn from our mistakes, and simulation allows our team to be vulnerable. The debrief after a simulation allows the team to reflect on what went right and what went wrong, while providing a safe place for constructive criticism.”

Michael and Judith Wright were excited for the opportunity to make

a lead gift that would position Children’s as a leader in simulation training. Judy, a Children’s Minnesota Foundation Board Member says, “Children’s saved the lives of two of our granddaughters, Judith (JJ) Harrington and Chloe Reppenhagen, who suffered at birth from heart conditions. We know firsthand how great Children’s is, which is why we chose to support simulation and help build an even brighter future for this valuable community asset.”

Donor Name: Jeremy and Lindsay Ginter

Involvement with Children’s Minnesota: In December 2008, Jeremy and Lindsay’s then seven-month-old son Evan was diagnosed with pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) type 1R. After receiving treatment at Children’s, Evan is now a happy and healthy nine year old. Jeremy and Lindsay have been closely involved in the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic, which supports cancer and blood disorders research. And in 2016 they joined Children’s Council.

Why I give: “The devastation we felt after our son’s diagnosis was eventually replaced by hope, because the team at Children’s never left our side. These men and women dedicate their lives to finding treatments and cures, and the ripple effect of what they discover saves the lives of children around the world. We give because Children’s saved our son’s life, but we also give because every family deserves to feel that hope.”

Donor Name: Nick and Briana Koch

Involvement with Children’s Minnesota: Days before celebrating his first birthday in March 2015, Aiden, Nick and Briana’s son, was diagnosed with a rare genetic mutation called Mitochondria DNA Depletion Syndrome 2, the 46th confirmed case in the world. Aiden spent most of his last two months of life receiving care at Children’s Minnesota. To honor Aiden’s memory, his family has sponsored artwork displayed in our Minneapolis campus and provided support for genomic medicine at Children’s.

Why I give: “We received the highest level of care and compassion when we were in Children’s with Aiden. We want other children and parents to have the same experience we did and we feel like we honor Aiden positively each time we give.”

Donor Name: Myrna Rose Strand

Involvement with Children’s Minnesota: Myrna began volunteering for and donating to Children’s Minnesota more than 30 years ago after a nurse from Children’s came to talk to the second grade class she was teaching. After hundreds of volunteer hours with several different departments within the hospital, Myrna is continuing her legacy with a planned gift to benefit neuroscience research.

Why I give: “It has been important to me to support Children’s and help carry on the work of Dr. Ramsey, who founded Children’s Hospital of St. Paul in 1924. Neurology is a very interesting field to me, and it’s important to study the brain, which is why my planned gift will establish an endowment for neuroscience research. I can’t take my money with me, so I want it to do good when I’m gone.”

Donor Name: Mark and Joan Davy, Maureen Davy Tesch and Daren Tesch, Michael and Whitney Davy

Involvement with Children’s Minnesota: The Davy family gives to save and change lives. Following the death of their daughter Anne, who passed away at 17 from brain cancer in 1991, Mark and Joan, along with the rest of their family, chose to honor her life by supporting Children’s. They founded The Anne Elizabeth Davy Pediat ric Oncology Nursing Education Endowment to support the education and training of those who made a profound impression on Anne, our nurses.

Why I give: “The nurses who cared for Anne brought her much joy and peace during a very challenging time. She loved each and every one of them. We felt that creating this endowment, in Anne’s memory, would assist the oncology nursing staff at Children’s in providing the same care and support to future patients that meant so much to Anne and our family.”

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

MISSIONWe champion the health needs of children and families. We are committed to improving children’s health by providing the highest-quality, family-centered care, advanced through research and education.

VISIONTo be every family’s essential partner in raising healthier children.

OUR VALUES These values guide the way we engage with each other, our patients and our communities:

KIDS FIRST. We’re inspired by children – we channel their optimism, resiliency, courage and curiosity into everything we do.

LISTEN, REALLY LISTEN. Each person has a story to tell. We listen with compassion, ask meaningful questions and build relationships with individuals and communities.

OWN OUTCOMES. We are 200% accountable for providing extraordinary service. Tireless in our pursuit of excellence, we never stop learning or improving.

JOIN TOGETHER. We are all caregivers. And, we are stronger when teamed with our patients, families, community and one another. Super teams trump superheroes.
