FORWARD

Welcome to the White Knights Baldivis Cricket Club’s presentation of the 2012/2013 Yearbook. This publication is set to celebrate the highs and lows of a year in which the club fielded 6 senior teams in the Peel Cricket Association.

This yearbook provides you with a comprehensive look into player statistics, milestones and most importantly club achievements. It also contains reports from all the captains, coaches and the committee on season’s events.

This yearbook took some time to produce and special recognition must go to the Co-ordinators Ryan Kenny, for his efforts in producing this great yearbook. Also thank you to Leigh Sibley, Rod Graham, Matt Vinkovich, Mitch Graham, Luke Green, Tom Fraser, Reggie Perrin, Pete Russell, Robert Botha, Stefan Botha and Leigh McIntosh for their contributions to the yearbook.

Finally, I hope you enjoy this book and treat it with the respect it deserves. This yearbook is a precious memory of the 2012/2013 season and will be looked upon in years to come as the history of our club grows.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

In our 12th year as a club we must tick it off as being a success in many areas. We have seen strong membership numbers once again fielding teams in every grade from under 10’s all the way through to A grade in the seniors. Financially we are looking quite solid. On the field our batting averages have increased as our bowling stocks remained strong. With 7 teams making appearances in the final series we must be happy with that. Plus our biggest strength has seen an increase in volunteers serving around the club. As a president I have much to be thankful for.

Once again we were recognized by the WACA as one of two clubs in our association for running a well developed junior program. Our holiday clinics have developed a niche in our community and will continue to grow if we put energy into them. Thanks must go out to the committee for all they do. Without their assistance we would not have a club. When we have a bunch of people chipping in the workload doesn’t seem so big. I also want to thank the other volunteers like junior coaches, the guys who help run the seniors training drills and our captains who help keep the game rolling.

In moving forward there are a few areas of the club we need to address as we continue to evolve into a large club.

We need to improve our volunteerism around the club. To meet the needs of a club our size we need to form sub committees to assist the executive committee in the daily running of our cricket community. How can we utilize the gifts and talents of our members more effectively without burning out the few.

We need to fill vacancies in key positions on the committee (vice president, junior advocate, cricket widows coordinator, In2cricket coordinator) to ensure we function at current levels. Juniors, wives and partners are a valued component of our club and have needs that could easily be met with a little coordination and assistance.

We need to think about the need to develop a central home for the Knights to meet in and strengthen our identity/culture. Is this a club house or another strategy. The bigger we get the stronger we need our values and story reinforced to the new members to ensure we maintain the great club we have.

Community links to strengthen. One way to combat the vandalism of our venues is to build strong ties with our local schools. In particular how can we connect with the new high school?

I am excited and passionate as ever about our club and it’s future. I look forward to journeying with you and the near 250 families that align themselves with the White Knights.

COACH’S REPORT

The 2013 season has been a break out year for the Baldivis Knights .The club had four senior and three junior teams make the finals with three of those teams making the Grand Final. With a winning culture starting to be established at the club and a continued emphasis on building positive relationship the platform has been set for the club to have sustained success over many years.   A special thank you   needs to be to all the people who have supported the coaching over the year. Ryan DeBoni, Matt Vinkovich and Gavin Clothier with the fielding  and Jason Youlden who has done an exceptional job of net co-ordination and team selections. Jason helped co-ordinate training 3 nights a week every week and never missed a beat even when 60 players needed to get a bat as well as junior teams having two nets till 5:30 Thank you again Jason   I would like to congratulate all the players who have put their hand up to captain the six sides throughout the year They have all done a superb job and have been professional in helping in selecting teams and doing the co-ordinating on game days. Thank you Leigh, Rod, Matt, Mitchell Luke, Ray, Tom and the many who filled in when the Captains couldn’t play. The success of the club this year is in no small way  because of how dedicated and committed the Captains were to managing well organised and motivated teams. Congratulations on B, C,  D, E 13, 15, and 17  teams making the finals. Well done to C,D, and 17 on making the Grand Finals Bring home 3 Flags boys.  All teams have been competitive in most games and with hard work the results will continue to fall our way. All teams have shown improvement over the year. It is important that we continue to encourage players to aim to play A grade . Even though this year A grade didn’t make the four it is by far our best team and the players below need to acknowledge the high standard of A grade and be pushing themselves to reach A grade standard. Overall the senior club won 64 games which was 13 more than last year. This is 25% more wins than last year. Well done all grades. We are well ahead of schedule to get all teams in the finals. It is great to see the number of batsmen who went on and made centuries this year. As a club we need to keep working on developing our batting depth. It is also great to see the young players around the club and to see their improvement as their skills and confidence improves and it is fantastic to see most of the junior teams playing finals. The strength of our club is keeping the juniors as they become seniors because it is a great place to be.  It is important that all players take responsibility at setting goals to improve their own game and the teams results will then happen The club is in a real development stage and we can only look forward to getting stronger each year in all facets of the club. It is important that everyone pulls together   to keep the focus on having a friendly happy environment around the club. If the club is going to continue to improve we need to have people put their hand up to help out. I would like to thank all the people who have helped me over the years with training as I am stepping down as co-ordinator of the playing side of the club. I believe that whoever takes the position next year is in a fantastic position to take Baldivis to being the most successful club in the PEEL District. We have taken huge steps over the last 4 years. Thank you to everyone who has contributed.

White Knights Baldivis Cricket Club Year Book 2012/2013

I first arrived in Australia in August last year and was very keen on playing cricket for the first time in over 10 years. Thanks to the awesome power of Google I discovered the White Knights!

That same week I attended my first training session in Baldivis where I met a number of players who've been involved with the club for a number of years. They explained to me that the club was sociable and very competitive at all levels. After a couple of weeks of training I realised just how big the club is and the potential it holds.

During the season I was fortunate enough to play with over 40 different players from C to E grade. I was also lucky enough to witness batsmen scoring centuries on four different occasions; three different plays getting 5 fa’s- one of which contained a hat trick. The attitude of the players that day summed up the attitude of this club - great commitment, enthusiasm and a want to win.

Over the season a massive thank you has to go to the various Captains, Coaches and Committee members who give up countless hours - and, of course, all the players and their respective families for their dedication and support.

My season was complete when I was selected to represent the club in the finals - where the White Knights deserve to be.

To end I'd like to thank all the people at White Knights for welcoming me to the club and for making my first season of cricket in Australia one I'll always remember.

A great club with even better people.

I would like to thank the White Knights Baldivis Cricket Club for giving me this opportunity of captaining the A Grade team this season.

A big thank you to Rod Graham and Jason Youlden for putting a lot of valued time and effort for all the grades training and teams selection.

Performance wise 2012 was not a good one for us – a lot of hard work but results not going our way. However, I do believe it built team strength, which showed after the break in 2013 where we picked up wins and very good wins against Warnbro and Mandurah showed great team spirit.

Overall review, batting some good knocks from Leigh Sibley, Paul O’Leary, Leigh McIntosh and Gavin Clothier all getting a couple of 50s each. Bowling – think they had their day once or twice this year. There were great spells from all of our bowlers this season.

Pete Russell – 10 overs, 6 maidens 3 for 7Mitch Brown – 3 – 20Robbie Botha 3 – 23Kyle Gardiner 3 – 6Ben Frawley and Daniel Fremantle were only ones to take 5 wickets.

Going forward I believe with more work ethic in training, especially in pre-season, and thinking more about the game i.e. we have to compete for 50 overs with ball and bat as when this happened we were capable of beating any team on the day.

Throughout 2013 a total of 44 players played for B grade. I am proud of the way all 44 players committed themselves to playing B grade where everyone played to the best of there ability, with great sportsmanship and endeavour. Considering the number of players who played for B grade we had an outstanding season. We were competitive in every home and away game and finished the season strongly beating every team in the competition at least once.

The team won 10 games which was a great effort needing to win the last four games to make the semi final. We achieved this and all players need to be proud of their efforts. There were a few outstanding games which we fought to the end and prevailed.

The game against Safety Bay where we were 8 for 45 chasing 190 and through brilliant batting from Gav and Lachie and some support from myself we got up and won. The effort against Mandurah where we made 90 and then the Deboni’s Clint and Ryan bowled them out for 29 was unforgettable.

.Congratulations needs to go to the players who performed well in B grade and got the call up to A grade. Hayden Cahir, Kyle Gardner, Gav Clothier and Lachie Pratt all were permanent fixtures in the A grade side by the end of the year. It is really important for the club that we have players performing in B grade to put pressure on the players in A team.

Notable batting performances throughout the year included Dave Brewer 100 and half centuries from Jake Smith, Gav Clothier, Adam Bremner, Brad Raath,  Chris Hughes and Lenny Hartley. Next year we hope to see a few more centuries made. All bowlers were consistent throughout the year with most wickets taken going to Rod Graham and Andrew Smart

Again thank you for all the players who contributed to the B grade team and we look forward to a great season next year.

C GRADE REPORT RUNNERS-UP 2012-2113

The 2012/13 season was my first as a captain for the club and I could not have been happier with how the C grade team performed both individually and as a group. The season got off to a slow start for us with the first game rained off followed by a very narrow loss to South Mandurah. From there we went on to win three of the next four games with only poor weather stopping us from winning four in a row. During this time we had some fine individual performances with our top order dominating thanks to strong innings from Dan Astell and John Dobson and five wicket and four wicket hauls to Lee Hunter and Matt Jordan.

The first true test to our premiership claims came against Halls Head in round 7. The match was a heated encounter with some contentious decisions leading to a tense atmosphere with Halls head going on to post 207 runs. Unfortunately our top order didn’t deliver and despite a spirited fight back by the middle order and tail we fell short and succumbed to our second loss for the season. Despite the setback, the team put in the hard work on the training track over the next few weeks and won our next four games and went in to the Christmas break with 7 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses. During this time we showed a lot of fight and determination by winning three games where we were able to defend scores of 114, 147 and 139 thanks largely to outstanding bowling performances from Lachlan Pratt (4-8), Matt Jordan (6-17 incl Hat-Trick) and Nathan Willcocks (5-19 incl Hat-Trick).

After Christmas we continued from where we left off winning 6 of our last 7 games with the only loss coming to the second placed Shoalwater by only 2 runs. During this time we convincingly defeated the top placed Halls Head by 51 runs and managed to push ourselves up to second spot on the ladder at the completion of the Home and Away season with a final record of 13 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses and for the first time the White Knights had a C grade team in the finals. I would also like to give a special mention to Nathan Thomas for his 103no and Ben Sharp for his 97 against Mandurah in round 17. We hosted the semi-final against Shoalwater at Koorana and it was a largely see-sawing affair with the momentum shifting several times throughout the game. We posted 174 batting first with 40s to Ryan Kenny and John Dobson and a 30 to myself and then we defended well with fine bowling performances from Clint Deboni (4-30) and Ben Sharp (2-34).

The team was abuzz with excitement for our first grand final appearance with many of us champing at the bit to get out there and see what we could do on the main stage. We started well when we were 0-27 after 9 overs but from there it went downhill with us losing wickets consistently and frustratingly not able to get a partnership going. We ended up fighting on to be bowled out with an over to spare but only 126 on the board. We always knew it would be tough to defend such a low score but we started well and had them 1-3 and then what we thought was 2-10 only to be denied by the umpire. Halls Head went on to put on 82 for the second wicket before Ben Sharp came on and took 5-16 to give us some hope before Halls Head went on to get the win. Unfortunately we were just short those 30-40 runs that probably would have allowed us to go on and win the game and the flag.

Despite the agonising loss in the final I think the team should be really proud of what we achieved this year. It was the first finals series for almost all of our players compared to a very experienced finals outfit in Halls Head and all things being equal, we were only one solid partnership away from winning the premiership this year. We will be much better for the experience and I know that if we put in the hard work in the preseason we can go that one step further next season. Thank you to all the players who contributed to C grade this year as well as to all the friends, family and

loved ones who supported us in the finals series and throughout the year. I would also like to thank Ryan Kenny for his superb contributions this year and wish him all the best in his new position. To the C graders, enjoy the offseason and let’s make sure we come back bigger and better next season!

TOP PERFORMANCES OF 2013

3 in a Row- Leigh McIntosh started the season cracking 3 hundreds in a row without being dismissed, 118no v Dwellingup, 140no v White Knights Baldivis Gold and 118no v Shoalwater.

Rampaging Roy - In Round 12, Roy put Shoalwater to the sword with a thumping 168no. Roy started slowly with Jai Sinclair who made 95 out of an opening partnership of 139 before putting on a batting clinic, cracking 20 4’s and 7 huge 6’s.

5 From 5 - Round 17 saw the White Knights win 5 from 5 with some thumping victories. A Grade 142 defeated Mandurah 74, B Grade after being dismissed for 90 rolled Mandurah for 27 in 11.5 overs with the Deboni boys doing the damage, C Grade recovered from 4 for 20 to make 7 for 321 with Nathan Thomas 103 no and Ben Sharp 97 doing the damage with the bat and dismissed Mandurah for 28 in 11.2 over with Haskell and Jordan with the poles, D Grade secured 2nd spot with a thumping 162 to 80 victory over 3rd place Shoalwater Bay and E Grade smashed Shoalwater 4 for 249 to 114.

Phil’s Huge Haul - Phil Carroll had the ball on a string this season picking up a club record 49 wickets. Phil picked up four five wickets in an innings, 5 for 9 v Safety Bay & Hillman, 5 for 15 v Singleton and 5 for 18 v South Mandurah.

Back to Under 12 Days - In Round 16 v Halls Head, C Grade skipper took us back to junior days with a remarkable performance. Matt cracked 75no with the bat, kept for the first session and then rolled the arm over taking 6 for 28. Matt also put the cones out, put the stumps in, took the drinks out, umpired, scored, brought the beers and KFC and made the sandwiches.

Big Partnership - Ben Sharpe and Nathan Thomas came together with C Grade in trouble, 4 for 20, in Round 17 v Mandurah. The boys then proceeded to despatch the bowling to all parts of Riverside Primary School putting on a season record 183 for the 5th wicket with Nathan finishing on 103no and Ben cracking 97.

Greatest Knights Comeback - In Round 11 B Grade took on top of the table and undefeated Safety Bay. Chasing 192 for victory, B Grade were in all sorts of hurt at 8 for 56 before some batting heroics from Gavin ‘Ice Man’ Clothier, promising junior Lachlan Pratt and Rod ‘Rocket’ Graham, steering the side home to one of the greatest victories the club has ever had.

Think Thrifty - Known for his tight arse behaviour such as bringing his own beers to club functions, Pete Russell took being thrifty to new levels this season. Pete returned extraordinary figures twice this season. In round 7 Mandurah couldn’t hit Pete of the square, returning figures of 10 overs, 6 madiens, 3 for 7. Pete topped this against South Mandurah in round 11 with figures of 10 overs, 8 madiens, 2 for 6. Pete has been seen throughout the season digging up the Settlers pitch and relaying it in his back yard.

D GRADE REPORT – RUNNERS-UP 2012-2113

This was my second year in a row as being captain for D grade and i enjoyed it just as much as the first year. Not only was I more confident then last year but I knew most of the guys in the team which made the start of the season a lot easier to get a long and communicate with everyone. So thankyou to everyone that played for my team and helped me out through the year when I needed it and making this season very enjoyable to play.

This season I was aiming to do better then last season when we just missed out on making the finals so I was keen to get early wins at the start of the season and not start like we did last season. We achieved this by winning 4 of our first 5 games which had us on top of the ladder which really set us up for the season. This lead to us only losing 3 games before finals which made us finish 2nd on the ladder.

We went in to the finals very confident when we found out we were playing Coastal Districts who finished 4th. The last time we played them if was very close so we knew it would be tough but we played one of our best games to beat them and secured a spot in the grand final. We played Halls Head in the final and ended up losing which was disappointing but after what we had achieved this year I would say this year was a big win for not only me and everyone that played D grade.

From all of our victories this season a couple really stood out. Our victory against the top of the ladder team Dwellingup. After losing to them earlier in the season 154 to 231 we were all nervous, we bowled first and bowled them out for 76 and we ended up scoring 148. After this win we knew we could make finals. Also our semi-final was one of our best wins. At this point of the season a win would put us in the final and losing would knock us out of the finals. We bowled first and got them all out for 93 and we declared on 98 to put us in the final.

Our strongest part of out team was our bowling, we bowled teams out for under 100 runs 11 times out of out 20 games which gave us a massive advantage in games. Bowlers like Phil Carroll taking 49 with bowling performances 5/9, 5/9, 5/15 and 5/18 made him the champion bowler for the competition. Also myself taking 26 wickets, Kieran Klason taking 24 wickets, Russell Hawkins taking 19 and Daniel Yaxley taking 14 for the season.

Our batting was very strong as well when we normally had around 8 or 9 decent batters in the team every week. With batters Chris O’Donnell scoring 525 runs for the year including scores of 55, 60, 57, 66 and 56. Des Carruthers with 300 runs and a highscore or 104, Peter Kenyon with 281 runs with a highscore of 69, Cameron Smith with 204 runs, Chris Smith with 186 runs and a highscore or 64 not out, Daniel Lazzari with 180 runs and Nathan Thomas with 143 runs with a highscore of 54 not out.

Our fielding was amazing this year as well starting with out wicketkeeper Chris O’Donnell with 40 dismissals and the team taking many more catches and getting plenty of run outs.

Also a thankyou to the people that also played and filled in for us throughout the season, such as Aaron Wilesmith, Joel Hackwell and Stuart Horton. Without everyone that played for us we never would have made it to the finals and achieved what we did.

This was one of the best years I’ve played, from what we achieved and the relationships everyone had formed from either during the games, after or at training. A big thankyou to everyone that played or filled in this season and to everyone that helped out. I hope to see you all again next season

LUKE GREEN CUP 2013

The annual Luke Green cup is hopefully now a wonderful tradition within the Baldivis White Knights club. The cup is named after Luke Green because of all the work and effort he has put into the juniors over the last couple of years. It all started at the beginning of the year, the old 17’s wanted to prove to the new/current 17’s that they are just as good as them or even better. We all agreed on this and the date, teams and venue was set. The LG cup was held at Settlers, it was the perfect ground to host a battle between the two Baldivis teams.

The two captains Robert (new) and Stefan (old) did the toss, Stefan won and elected to have a bat. The two openers Gerard and Luke didn’t get the old 17s off to the best start with Luke departing way to soon. We recovered very nicely through Ben and Gerard, the bowling was very tight by the new 17s and it produced the wicket of Ben soon after. That meant that Stefan had to come in and get a couple of runs, that didn’t work as the great Jordan Barber quickly removed him. They finished off strong through Shaun and Hayden Lynn and finished with a total of 143. The new 17s were confident that they would get this score in no time.

However the old 17s were not going to let this happen and bowled tight from the start, but the new 17s held their composure and didn’t lose any wickets but the run rate was a bit of a worry. One superb spell of bowling from Hayden Lynn started a collapse and soon even the captain was back in the sheds. Lachlan Pratt however stayed around but that didn’t stop the

wickets tumbling. They were all bowled out for 109. There was a massive celebration as the old 17s won, the contest was tight but the better team won on the day.

It was a fantastic day all round and everyone enjoyed it. The competition was strong and fierce and that provided a good spectacle for many of the seniors that came down and watched. Thanks very much to Michelle, Gav and Reggie for providing drinks and setting up a sausage sizzle afterwards. We hope that this can be a tradition in the club for the years to come, it brings everyone together and makes for a very enjoyable day. We are all very thankful to be a part of the best club in WA!

E GRADE BLUE REPORT

The E Grade Blue side, started the season off with some fresh faces both with new players to the club and players being elevated from the junior playing days. The season went off with a bang with our first 4 games resulting in wins (1 draw in there as well). After losing by some significant margins against both Warnbro sides, Hall Head as well as some close games against Dwellingup in a fiery encounter and the derby game against Gold, the Christmas break couldn't come quicker.

After the break we re-focused and started the last half of the season off with a emphatic win over Shoalwater White, amassing a total of 343 on ten runs short of our season record, thanks to a destructive display of batting from Jai Sinclair (95 from 65 balls) and Roy Crouch (168* from 100 balls). That win turned the hopes and enthusiasm around helping us win the next 5 out of 6 games including two of the top three, again the only team getting in our way was Halls Head.

We finished the season with 10 wins 1 draw and 6 loses, giving us enough points to earn a semi final birth. Unfortunately it had to be against the only team we hadn't won a game against in Halls Head, and for the third time this season we had to travel to Peelwood to play them. It just wasn't our day going down and unfortunately not being able to join the C and D grades in a grand final.

For me as captain, things we made a lot easier by great performances like these:Batting -Roy Crouch 168* against Shoalwater White,Leigh McIntosh 140 against White Knights Gold,Leigh McIntosh 118 against Dwellingup,Leigh McIntosh 118 against Shoalwater White,Luke Green 117 against Shoalwater Gold.

Bowling -Chris Marwood 5/10 against Warnbro Purple,Derek Ashfield 5/29 against White Knights Gold.

Fielding -Jai Sinclair 9 catches,David Murphy 7 catches and a run out,Luke Green 9 catches (including 2 as keeper) and 2 stumpings.

Finally I would just like to thank all 31 players that played under both myself and Leigh while he was in charge of the reigns your efforts through out the season we brilliant to watch. Special thanks go to Leigh for helping the guys to get off to a great start, I'm sure all the flack you coped was worth it, I still maintain the best sporting moment I have seen was watching Ben go out and bat with you against Shoalwater White. I would also like to thank my three vice captains Ross Perrin, Nathan Thomas and Jai Sinclair for taking over as captain for the few games I was away including the semi final and finally a big thanks to both Jason Youlden and Rod Graham even though we had great discussions on team selection night, with out you two none of the teams would run as smoothly as they did.

All I can say is bring on a bigger and better 2013/14 season and let's try and get all grades into finals.

Apologies to any players we have missed.E GRADE GOLD REPORT

Firstly I would like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to captain a side full of lively and great bunch of blokes. After what seemed like a roller coaster ride going from the highs of smashing teams to losing by 1 run.

No single person made this team what it was it was a team effort all round whether it be Dan Hazeldean and Scott Purcell’s big hitting or Aaron Wilesmith’s ill stand at the other end and watch the fireworks approach or Cai Hill’s new found opening bowler status or Anthony Nardi tying batsmen up by spinning it both ways. Overall it was a season with the team finishing with 8 wins and 8 loses and a rained out draw.

Our batting had its good days then it’s bad days over the year we had a total of 12 50s from Scott Purcell, Ray Goddard, Dan Hazeldean, Ben Skewes and John Limb and a lone centurion Dan Hazeldean against Warnbro Swans Cricket Club black team which was the best display of batting I have seen all year congratulations Dan.

Our bowling this year was our strength with great depth within the team where if need could call on anybody to bowl and they were willing to have a crack but Cai Hill was defiantly our most improved bowler finishing the season with 16/242 with his best bowling figures of 4/30 against Shoalwater white.

Our other 4 main bowlers chipped in with wickets with Anthony Nardi finishing with 10 Rob Hall with 14 Ray Goddard with 16 and myself with 33 and others chipped in with their few as well over all our bowling was good taking more wickets then we lost. We dropped way too many catches this season Rob Hall the unlucky bowler on most occasions but let’s not dwell on that. Lastly I would like to thank all those who supported us as a team and those who filled in for us when it was needed you can’t play cricket without 10 other blokes to do it with you so having you come down and play was greatly appreciated.
