When a need arises, people don’t just sit around and say, “If only I had the time or money. . .” Our community is brimming with extraordinary people making a difference one small act at a time.

They use their bodies -- swinging hammers to raise roofs, running races to raise awareness and shooting basketballs to raise money for a cause.

They use their time -- keeping abandoned animals warm, teaching folks to read, and making sure neighbors aren’t going hungry.

They use their talents -- coordinating art shows, preparing food, planting community gardens, and dancing to celebrate their heritage while educating others.

More than anything they use their hearts; giving where we’re living.

we can’t forget the small but determined group of Churubusco volunteers who gave their time to make sure one man’s dream for the community became a reality. The list of those who are literally “giving where they are living” is considerable, but many names can be found within this very report. Our appreciation is extended to all our donors who have made so many good things possible and continue to show their support for the work being carried out by their Community Foundation. By rights, we will remember 2009 as a tough period when individuals, families, businesses and non-profit organizations continued to suffer through turbulent market times. The Foundation’s portfolio was banged up, but remained intact and eventually began rebounding in 2010. Thankfully, our grant making was able to continue when it was truly needed the most. We owe a sincere thanks to the members of the Finance Committee who steadfastly guided our

Never one for brevity when it comes to writing, if I were forced to describe in five words or less the charitable climate in Whitley County during 2009 and 2010 it would simply be to say “We’re Giving Where We’re Living.”

How fortunate that Whitley County residents have numerous examples to support this claim. High school gyms turned decidedly pink as hoopsters found they could raise funds to help cancer patients while play-ing basketball. Families torn by grief were lifted by a caring community as scholarship funds were established -- lasting memorials to those gone far too soon. First graders pooled their pennies to help provide swim-ming lessons for toddlers. Warm coats were donated and broken eye glasses were fixed when some families would not have other-wise been able to afford the expense. And

investment strategies through uncertain times. Our gratitude also extends to the members of the Grants Committee who thoughtfully directed available funds to programs that were helping to keep food on tables, children safe and assistance within reach, at a time when unemployment climbed over 12% in our county.

And yet out of tough times came new direction. In 2009-2010, the Foundation’s Board members took seriously a shared commitment to become more strategic in their grant making. While setting aside dollars to respond to local needs, the community leaders decided to tackle a critical issue – the need for Whitley County residents to grasp the fundamental necessity of achieving a post-secondary education. Their bold vision – which grew into WhitleyForward-- is highlighted within this report.

I am profoundly grateful to work side by side with a smart, talented, professional team. When you note the number of pooled funds managed by the Foundation (205 by my count) you’ll have a new appreciation for our Business Director Vanessa Bills, who single handedly manages everyone’s slice of the pie. I speak for the whole staff when I say we feel fortunate to earn our livings doing work that we truly love.

Speaking of making a living --there’s a poignant quote that states “You make a living by what you earn, you make a life by what you give.” With so many folks giving where they are living, Whitley County is truly blessed.

September McConnell, Executive Director

When an endowment is established through a charitable gift to the Community Founda-tion, we don’t spend the donation. Ever. Instead, we save the gift and invest it wise-ly to grow and produce earnings. A Fund Agreement is executed when the endow-ment fund is started. This legal instrument ensures that the Community Foundation is obligated to distribute the earnings pursuant

to the donor’s original intent. Distributions of endowment earnings are called grants or scholarships. Typically, only a portion of the total earnings are distributed. This allows the endowment fund to grow over time. As the years go by, grants or scholarships from the endowment will far exceed the amount of the donor’s original gift.

How Endowments Give Forever

This is about two great guys – one a native by birth, the other a transplant by choice. They both shared a genuine love for Whitley County. Sadly, they passed away during the period covered by this report. While they are sorely missed, their pres-ence continues to be felt, thanks in part, to their understanding of endowments.

Bob Brittain

Bob Brittain was a lifelong resident of Whitley County. An English teacher and Speech & Debate Coach at Columbia City High School for more than 40 years, Bob dedicated hi s career to his beloved students. He coached four State Debate Championship Teams and was named to the National Forensic Hall of Fame in 2000. A desire to plan for the future led him to the

Community Foundation in 1994, where he established an endowment fund to benefit the Columbia City Eagles Speech & Debate Team. Never one to covet the spotlight, he was insistent that the Fund not be named for him. None the less, his legacy was secured when, upon his unexpected passing, he left a bequest to the endowment fund. Thanks to his gift, travel expenses and competition costs will be covered by Mr. Brittain’s generosity for generations to come and he will forever continue to have a role in shaping students who participate in Speech & Debate at Columbia City High School.

Charles Brown

For those of us who had the privilege of knowing Charles Brown, it’s impos-sible to remember him without a smile emerg-ing. Who can forget the spry figure who pedaled around the neighborhood on his bicycle and offered a heart-warming “hello!” and wave to everyone he passed? Born in Iowa, Charles received his BS in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M. After college, he served active duty as a Captain in the U.S. Army. In 1944, he wed Margaret Hamilton and in time they moved to Fort Wayne where he was an engineer for General Electric. In 1955 he transferred to Schenectady, NY.

Our community was blessed when he returned to the Midwest. In 1995 he became a Columbia City resident when he married Frances Gordon

Stuckey. Charles was as intelligent as he was friendly, and it was his inquisitive mind and a generous heart that led him to the Community Foundation to learn more about endowments. When he passed away at age 89, his will called for the establish-ment of five different agency endowment funds at the Community Foundation. Habitat for Humanity of Whitley County, the Whitley County Historical Society, the Whitley County Literacy Council, the Interfaith Mission and the Methodist Federation for Social Action all benefitted from Charles’ foresight. The establishment of these endowment funds was a true reflection of the principles in which Charles believed.

6

Habitat for Humanity of Whitley County provides simple, decent housing for people in need. Charles Brown appreciated that mission and chose to supportHabitat for generations to come through his endowed gift.

Members of the CCHS basketball teams put aside their maroon and gold uniforms to play in in pink. Their jerseys were auctioned following the games and with the help of fundraisers conducted by other high school clubs, the players raised $16,000 to benefit the Whitley County Cancer Care Fund. The endowment fund provides support to local non-profits that provide services to Whitley County residents who are battling cancer. While both teams had wins on the scoreboard, the biggest victory was in giving back to the community.

Agency endowments benefit the non-profit organization for which they are named, by creating a stable income stream annually. While they benefit the agency, they are an asset of the Foundation.

The Community Foundation holds an agency endowment fund for Camp Whitley. Distributions from this fund are used to make sure that Camp is in tip-top shape for each new generation of campers.

Established with the purpose of assisting charitable projects or causes in the community with professional bookkeeping, the Community Foundation holds several non-permanent funds under our umbrella. Unlike gifts to endowments that can never be spent, gifts to non-permanent funds can be spent in their entirety. Gifts to these funds are tax-deductible as long as no goods or services were received in exchange for the contribution.

A dedicated group of Churubusco volunteers worked to bring Paul Muller’s vision of aquatic fun to their community. Mr. Muller’s testamentary gift was held in a non-permanent fund at the Foundation. We were honored to work with the tireless volunteer committee as they oversaw the construction of Paul’s Pad, a sensational Splash Pad created for the youth of Churubusco.

At the end of 2009, Ralph Bailey, Todd Jones and Rosemary Steiner each completed their fifth consecutive two-year board terms. As individuals, they each brought special talents and gifts to the Board table and our organization was made stronger because of their loyal support and thoughtful direction.

FORWARDWhile many local residents can point to the Whitley County Community Foundation as a grant maker to area non-profits, or as a local place for donors to fulfill their charitable wishes, the Community Foundation has another role. It is part of our mission to address local needs and become a catalyst for change. Sometimes, the news that comes as a result of this role isn’t always favorable.

In 2009, the Foundation’s Board was made aware of the dramatic decline in per capita income in Northeast Indiana over the past 15 years. This means that for every $1 the aver-age American worker makes, we now make 80 cents. Compare this to 1995 when local workers made .99 cents to the nation’s $1 average. Understanding that efforts must be taken to stop and reverse this decline, Foun-dation board members looked for answers.

The good news is that the future holds great promise for careers in advanced manufactur-ing, engineering and technology in the de-fense and biomedical industries in Northeast

Indiana. To secure and retain these jobs, we must be able to deliver a skilled and knowl-edgeable workforce.

Believing that education is the long-term key to providing vibrant, talented workers, the Board committed to a bold, three-year initia-tive. WhitleyForward was created to bolster support for STEM education through com-munity awareness and programming that supports efforts currently underway in our schools. STEM stands for Science, Technol-ogy, Engineering and Mathematics, and we can’t do enough to encourage educational pursuit in these areas!

Encouraging STEM education, WhitleyForward underwrote the costs of bringing Lego Robotics Programs to local schools.
