Who is Covenant Health? St. Mary’s Health System is a member of Covenant Health — a New England based, Catholic, not-for-profit health network. While being a member of a larger network brings with it many benefits, including strength in a complex healthcare system, we are still your community hospital. St. Mary’s Health System Foundation promises you that your gift stays local and helps your community. We take our role as stewards of your philanthropy very seriously, and we always work to uphold your intentions – right down to the area of care you would like your gift directed to. Your gift makes a vital difference in the health and wellbeing of our community, and we thank you for your continued support.

You can find out more about Covenant Health at covenanthealth.net

Our MissionWe are a Catholic health ministry, providing healing and care for the whole person, in service to all in our communities.

Mark Anthoine, Sr.Board President St. Mary’s Health System

1Sources of Strength

We are pleased to share Sources of Strength: the St. Mary’s Health System Foundation Annual Report for 2018. In the pages that follow, you will read about what makes St. Mary’s strong and how your support of your regional medical center is helping to keep members of the community healthy and to care for those who are vulnerable or suffering.

This report acknowledges our St. Mary’s “family”: our employees, donors, volunteers and community partners. Each plays a vital role in making St. Mary’s a true source of strength in our community. In 2018, you and hundreds of others contributed $1,888,598 in support of St. Mary’s mission to provide healing and care to the whole person, in service to all in our communities.

St. Mary’s people are what makes the definitive difference in how we care for those in need — a gentle touch, an attentive ear, a softly spoken prayer.

We hope that your appreciation for the vital work of St. Mary’s is renewed in reading these powerful stories of compassion, care, community and impact. Thank you for the role you play in making a healthy, strong community.

With gratitude,

Steven JorgensenPresident St. Mary’s Health System

“I can do all this through Him who gives me strength” ~ Philippians 4:13

One of St. Mary’s proudest moments of 2018 was the opening of the new Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Unit. At a cost of over $2.6 million, raised entirely from generous donors, the project marked the successful completion of Phase I of Making an Impact with Care & Compassion: The Campaign for St. Mary’s. Without the support and generosity received from donors and our community, the new unit wouldn’t have been possible.

One of few inpatient child and adolescent behavioral health units in Maine, the new unit provides much-needed care for children and young people from Lewiston-Auburn and beyond. The new unit has made a significant difference for patients and their families.

The old unit had noticeable wear and tear and didn’t reflect the stellar reputation that St. Mary’s has in behavioral health. The new unit has single rooms with full, private bathrooms. Patient safety was at the heart of its design — including features such as built-in furniture and a wide straight hallway. Communal spaces are light, warm and comforting, and each room has a name panel that can be personalized.

Major depression is a common cause for a young patient to be admitted, usually with a stay of five to seven days. Anita Rousseau, RN-BC, has worked in behavioral health at St. Mary’s for nearly 25 years. She explained that the new unit has made a huge difference for patients and their families. “Families are very impressed with the lighting, color and newness of the unit. I have heard parents say they would like to stay here, which means they have much fewer reservations about their child being admitted,” she said. Making the decision to hospitalize your child is incredibly hard, but the new unit shows parents that their children will be getting the care they need in an environment designed for healing.

The kids are impressed too. “They have peace and quiet here; for many it’s the first time in a long time. I’ve noticed considerably less negative behavior during quiet/room time since moving to the new unit,” Anita said. “And the kids love the winding road pattern in the hallway — I smile when I occasionally see a child skip down it.”

The Campaign for St. Mary’s Making an Impact With Care & Compassion: The Campaign for St. Mary’s has secured $5.7 million in gifts and pledges toward its overall goal of $6.5 million, thanks to our many wonderful donors. Several exceptional people have also made generous gifts, including planned gifts, to support other facets of St. Mary’s, committing an additional $11.7 million to our campaign. The campaign celebrated the completion of Phase I in 2018, with the opening of the new child and adolescent behavioral unit. This spring we will break ground for the construction of Phase II, a new infusion center. Phase III, a new adult behavioral health unit, is on track for construction to start in spring 2020. You can ensure The Campaign for St. Mary’s is a success — please visit stmarysmaine.com/campaign or call the Foundation office at 207.777.8863 to find out more.

Last year was a challenging one for Kim Chicoine, but her favorite scripture verse has given her strength when she needed it and reminded her that she is not alone in her struggles.

Diagnosed with an aggressive and rare form of breast cancer last spring, Kim has since undergone an exhausting treatment plan of complicated surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. She says her care at St. Mary’s was amazing. “All the St. Mary’s team has been phenomenal! I feel like I’m a rock star or something because I’ve had the best doctors, nurses, treatment – I feel blessed.”

She says that while there is absolutely no doubt that she’s received extraordinary care, Kim is grateful that St. Mary’s is investing in a more modern and comfortable Infusion Center. The current Infusion Center is showing wear from its many years of use. The walk from the parking lot is long and tiring for patients suffering from the side effects of treatment, and the location of the current entrance is such that immunocompromised patients must walk through the hospital, which is an added risk.

Kim has seen renderings for the new Infusion Center and believes it will make a huge difference for future patients. The center will have its own entrance and be located next to the pharmacy to shorten medication delivery times. A homelike environment with added privacy will help patients relax during treatment (which can take six to eight hours). There will also be a welcoming space for a patient’s support person, including a small kitchen.

Kim recently finished her treatment and the prognosis is good. She is looking forward to seeing the new Infusion Center become a reality, but she hopes to never need it again as a patient.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” ~ Jeremiah 29:11

Denise Timberlake, MSN, RN, CNOR, NEA-BC and Jim Place, MD, have taken on vital volunteer roles in The Campaign for St. Mary’s as chairs of the Employee Campaign and the Provider Campaign committees, respectively. Their tireless efforts in sharing the vision with the staff and in asking for support have made a huge difference. To date a total of $899,000 has been raised from 350 employees and 38 providers.

Denise Timberlake, Director of Surgical Services, and her husband gave to the capital campaign in honor of everyone they know who has been helped by St. Mary’s. She also stepped up to lead the Employee Campaign Committee because it was something extra she could do to show her support.

Diagnostic Radiologist Jim Place has a long history of supporting St. Mary’s and didn’t hesitate to step into a leadership role for The Campaign for St. Mary’s. Jim believes that St. Mary’s is a unique gift to Lewiston-Auburn, and his role as the chair of the Provider Campaign Committee has seen him cement this belief in many others.

The Samson SocietyWe are delighted to announce The Samson Society, recognizing St. Mary’s most loyal donors – those who give three or more consecutive years.

The society is named for Theresa Samson, one of St. Mary’s most committed donors. She has given generously of both her time and treasure, and we wished to honor her steadfast commitment to St. Mary’s mission.

A faithful supporter, Theresa has been donating generously and consistently for many, many years. In fact, she has been giving so long that she precedes our electronic record (which goes back 22 years)! Theresa also holds the distinction of being St. Mary’s first woman board chair, as well as the Foundation’s first Charitable Gift Annuity donor.

If you have given to St. Mary’s for three or more years in a row, we welcome you to The Samson Society (listed on the following page).

St. Mary’s Nutrition Center holds a special place in Jim Cassidy’s heart. That’s not surprising given that he’s the former CEO of St. Mary’s and was instrumental in the creation of the Nutrition Center as it is known today.

Jim still gives generously of his time to the Nutrition Center’s Food Pantry. It’s a different way to experience the Nutrition Center. As CEO, he was always looking at the big picture, but as a volunteer he gets to interact directly with the people who use the Food Pantry’s services. He also enjoys the social aspects of working alongside other volunteers, doing something good together.

Jim volunteers to honor St. Mary’s foundress, Marguerite d’Youville, and her ceaseless mission of service to those most in need. “Big achievements don’t need to be dramatic or spectacular,” he said. “The idea of making sure people are fed is basic, but absolutely fundamental for a community to grow and thrive. The Nutrition Center works tirelessly to tackle the issue of food insecurity and hunger, among other things.”

Jim is quick to point out that the Nutrition Center wouldn’t be where it is today without such a passionate team moving things forward. Their tenacity in pulling all the elements together – from fundraising and grants to volunteers and program development – has enabled them to significantly increase the number of people they serve.

Jim and his wife, Rita, have made a Planned Gift to the Nutrition Center. They deeply believe in the importance and value of the center. For them, a Planned Gift was an easy way to provide resources that will ensure the Nutrition Center can pursue its mission for decades to come.

St. Mary’s successful fundraiser and community event, The Commit to Get Fit Challenge, wouldn’t happen without our amazing volunteers! And just like the 15 km race runners pictured above, our volunteers have the drive and motivation to get the job done well!

Around 60 volunteers contribute to the event’s success — from planning it months in advance to operations on event day. Some volunteers are employees, others are our wonderful, regular volunteers who give their time so generously to St. Mary’s. Each year the Commit also benefits from student groups who want to log service hours for various projects or classes.

“Our volunteers are invaluable,” says Volunteer Services Manager, Jenny Cowie. “They’re here without pay, and we do everything we can to reward them with appreciation.” Everyone volunteers for a different reason, but they give their time to help make sure the Commit to Get Fit Challenge is a fun day for everyone involved.
