Farewell on the matric grass

WHS is best known not only for its perfor-

mance but evidently for its many tradi-

tions. These traditions have existed for a

long time now, and continue to flourish.

These traditions also form a very important

identity for the school and creates a

platform that enable WHS learners to cre-

ate memories worth being cherished for

eternity. The watermelon festival, the Sok-

kies, Sotte Concert, Teachers Day, Valen-

tines Dance and the Glitterball dance are

amongst many of the favourite traditions

that the WHS learners enjoy.

There seems to be one tradition in particu-

lar, that many learners consider important

and memorable. This tradition is known as

“Valedictory Day”, which is celebrated

every year in the third trimester. WHS held

its Valedictory Day on 20 September on

the matric grass. This event is celebrated in

honour of the Grade 12’s, who despite of

all the challenges faced, reached their goal

of completing secondary school. The non-

matriculants were ecstatic to see them

dressed in glamour. The matriculants

themselves had a sense of pride, happiness

and accomplishment as they walked past

the audience. “I still can’t get past the idea

that I finished school and that I’m finally

going to varsity. I wanted to get emotional

but I felt relieved as I remembered the

tough and long journey I experienced at

high school,” says Ukarapo Kasaona.

On this day, they say goodbye to being

high school learners and say hello to living

independent lifestyles.

Magically, Fantastic Matric Farewell

The grade 12s celebrated a gorgeous matric farewell on the 6th September 2019.

The farewell this year was a bit different than previous years. Of course the matrics

made their famous entrance on Vegkop field at Windhoek High School. Every single

matric looked stylish and jaw dropping fancy!

After their entrances they had welcoming drinks under the tent and had the chance

to spend time with family and friends. From there the matrics climbed onto the

school busses and were taken to a surprise location, Droombos. It looked absolute-

ly magical there.

However other than showing off a snazzy car and your amazing dress or suit, what

is the real purpose of the matric farewell? “The matric farewell is the last night we

get to spend together as a grade and just have fun,” says Kayla Barlow. It is also a

way for grade 12’s to celebrate how far they have made it and to make the last

special memories last.

In the end, the matrics of 2019 truly enjoyed their farewell, even though things

were done differently this year. “Now that it was my chance it felt a lot different

from what I thought the years I watched it from the stadium. The school really

made an effort to make it special for us. It was, however, a happy yet sad moment

for me because I did realise that my time at WHS is now coming to an end,” states

Karina Hanekom.

Interskole Vastrap! Learners from WAP, Delta, WHS & Windhoek Gymnasium dancing and socializing.

The lucky winner is... Maria Fernandu walks away with the brand new Suzuki Celerio GL1.0. Congratulations on winning our Raffle & SMS Competition for 2019! Thank you all for participating.

On 19 September 2019 WHS hosted the first ever Vastrap Sok-kie. They invited learners from Windhoek Gymnasium, WAP and Delta. Learners were required to wear any shirt that repre-sented their school and once they were all crowded together on Vegkop stadium it looked like an ocean of colours. There were a total of five dance floors and a stage with a DJ and a photo booth, but that’s not all. There were also stalls where you could buy glow sticks and glow in the dark face paint! The tuck shop was open all night and there was a stall with hot chocolate and cupcakes. The stalls and the tuck shop were fundraisers for the netball, rugby and the school culture department. There was also a fire spinner as an exciting surprise for the learners from the organizing committee of the sokkie. Over all it was an even-ing of great success and I think everyone had a blast. We look forward to the next Vastrap Sokkie!

Nina Smit is an exceptional, talented and outstanding young artist.

So much so that she achieved first place for her age group in the

Tygerberg International Eisteddfod. Her incredible drawing of her

grandmother was the winning artwork and it received highest hon-

ours. We sat down with young Picasso and asked her a few ques-

tions:

What inspires or drives your artwork?

I have always really loved drawing faces especially the elderly. I

think it’s because of the wrinkles and all the detail in drawing them.

I just love it!

What types of art are you most drawn to?

I have a few pieces which are abstract but most of my work is usual-

ly observation.

What themes do you pursue?

Mostly people and I have drawn dogs. I haven’t really tried land-

scapes but who knows? Maybe I’ll try soon.

What is the best piece of advice you would give to someone who is

interested in becoming an artist?

I actually do have something to say about this. I would say that if

they are ever bored, instead of turning on the tv, that they should

just draw. They should just sit down and draw whatever pops into

their head first, even if it’s something they don’t like to draw. I actu-

ally noticed that in order to do art that you should have an eye for

it. For example, you need to be able to see where contrast is need-

ed and if the proportions are correct. Most of your talent should

actually be in your eye.

What’s some of your early memories when you started doing art

at WHS?

You won’t believe it but I literally could not even shade when I was

in grade 8. If I look at some of my work in grade 8 I can’t believe I

did it. I even drew a little grey shoe and now I can even draw my

grandma. In fact, the first time I drew my grandma was in grade 9

and it was already good and so I decided to draw her again this year.

The thing is you don’t think you can improve but I learned that you

always can improve.

Which of your pieces is your favourite?

Well, there are different categories like if it’s animals then it’s my

dog that I like to draw and if it’s people then I definitely like to draw

my grandma. I actually think that what I like to draw usually isn’t my

best work, for example I really like charcoal drawings but they are

not my best work.

How did the competition help with your progress moving forward?

For me, it was a beginning to much more. It was like the first step to

success for me. I actually entered one of my pieces into another

competition and now I’m waiting in anticipation to see what hap-

pens. I also feel like it’s the only place where I can actually get real

recognition for my work because I’m not really a sport person. It

really made me feel special.

Windhoek High School performs well at the Tygerberg Eisteddfod

Over 1300 learners took part in the Tygerberg International Eisteddfod Art Competition. The exhibition was held at the

Tygerberg Art Centre in Bellville South Africa. The well known artist, Hermien van der Merwe, handed over the art awards.

Art works were judged on the age of the learner, ability within your age group, the handling of your art medium and the inter-

pretation of your topic. And then also the ‘wow’ factor.

Well done to all the participants with their results:

Forms of Communication at WHS

We would love to keep you informed of the latest events, news

and information from WHS. In order not to miss out on anything,

please ensure that you are connected to all 3 of the following

forms of communication:

d6 COMMUNICATOR

The school communicator is used to send through

reminders,

information and news items of interest to our learners and par-

ents. This form of communication is regarded as the most effi-

cient way to get information through on a relatively short no-

tice. Please ensure that you download this app to stay con-

nected this way.

FACEBOOK

Our Facebook page is used to share important in-

formation and

reminders but also photos of events and learner

achievements, as they happen. Please follow our page to learn

more about our school and our learners.

WHATSAPP GROUPS

Whatsapp groups are created by the teachers

to ensure that communication flows from the

class teacher to all parents.

The school acknowledges this as an effective

form of communication but cannot accept any

responsibility for the content of such groups.

Please use a broadcasting group on this platform instead of a

chat group. This way only the administrator of the group re-

ceives comments from group members, and not the whole

group. The administrator can still send a reply to the message to

the whole group, if he/she feels that the whole group will bene-

fit from it. The sole purpose of such groups should be to share

school related information. By using a broadcasting group, no

ads, videos or other irrelevant information, emoji’s, negative

comments or discussions can disturb its members or the rest of

the school community. Also, please do not broadcast after

21:00 in the evening or before 06:00 in the morning. We urge

both parents and teachers to honour this request.

WHS GoGreen project helped to clean the Gammams River in Khomasdal as part of the National Clean-up Campaign. Thank you to all the learners who donated black bags.

Plastic Packaging handed over 1200 Car Clean-up Flat Bags, 20 Recycling Bags, 10 Recycling boxes and 400 info pamphlets to the WHS Go-Green Project. These items will be distributed and used at school to raise awareness and keep our city clean!

Varta Consumer Batteries supplied the solid waste project with a Battery Collection Bin for all used/old batteries. Please support the project and dispose your old and used batteries at school.

The ‘Tiener-Toneel’ is planned and organised by the learners. The young actors write all the scripts and choose who should act each character and scene. “The ‘Tiener-Toneel’ is a place where teenagers can express their drama talents. When they are on stage, they have the opportunities to find themselves again. They also learn from other actors and embrace their inner;” said the leading actor, Beatri Turner, who plays Cindy in this years’ ‘Tiener-Toneel.’

According to Beatri, just the fact that the ‘Tiener-Toneel’ is super exciting, being someone else on stage and meeting other schools’ actors, truly inspired her to partake in this even, and also because she loves drama. “When you are chosen to play a specific role, you feel honoured, stressed and a bit nervous, because you have to remember your lines and have to become the character.” Beatri has a quote that she uses to motivate her and inspire her to do even better. It says: “Never give in—never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” This quote is by Winston Churchill.

However, it is not all fun and games. “Time management is a key factor in this. You need to prioritise and use every spare minute you can. If you do not use your time wisely you waste moments where you can improve yourself,” said Beatri. Practise makes perfect. By practising and practising you improve. Once you im-prove, the play itself changes and becomes even better.

Drama not only empowers teenagers, but builds them up and gives them confidence. This is why the ‘Tiener-Toneel’ is so important.

Celebrating the legends

On the 11th of September, Windhoek High School staged a concert solely

dedicated to notable artists throughout the ages. The multiple students and

the two teachers participating sang, danced and even played instruments to

the various featured songs.

Hosted by three different MCs, the audience was not only entertained, but

informed as well. Before every performance, a short history was told about

the celebrated artists, including when they rose to fame and what awards

they won during the span of their careers.

Well-known artists and bands songs’ that were part of the program included

Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Kylie Minogue, Abba and Mariah Carey.

Popular songs performed included “Don’t stop believing” by Journey, “Can’t

stop this feeling” by Justin Timberlake, “Total eclipse of the heart” by Bonnie

Tyler and “Can’t help falling in love” by Elvis Presley. The Windhoek High

School learners displayed talent in their performances, that will be seen

soon again in upcoming events. Mikayla Pretorius Gr9

The leaders of tomorrow

As the year is drawing to a close and matric examinations are nearing, a new set of LRCs had to be chosen to take over the responsibilities of the grade twelve group. After pre-elections and the annual “Big Sweat”, where the candidates were asked a question in front of the grade ten, elevens and twelves, the LRCs were revealed the following day.

The group consisted of twenty grade eleven learners and eight grade ten learners. The grade eleven girls chosen were Alessandra von Wielligh, Ansjen van Zyl, Beanca le Roux, Danelle Steenkamp, Lara Hanstein, Linda Ekaku, Maxine Cloete, Mercy Apata, Mia Botha and Shanize Krohne. The grade eleven boys were Anri Lombard, Daniel Opperman, Eben-Ezer Angula, Edward Turner, Gian Dresselhaus, Johann Serfontein, Leonardo Eichab, Matthew Mouton, Okeri Kazuvire and Rikus van Staden. In grade ten, Armin van Staden, Clara Weder, Jana Hein and Rukiya Beukes were selected, as well as Caleb Zola, Divan la Cock, Ethan Januarie and Henning Kruger.

On the twelfth of September the new group departed to Moonlight Resort, together with the heads and deputy heads of this year. The goal of the camp was not only to allow the LRCs to get to know each other, but to let them grow together as a group. Other than that, the LRCs also voted for their new head girl and head boy, as well as deputy head girl and deputy head boy. These learners were revealed at the Award Ceremony on the eighteenth of September as Danelle Steenkamp and Rikus van Staden as the heads, and Lara Hanstein and Matthew Mouton as deputy heads. The day after the ceremony the LRCs officially took over as the new leaders of the school for the rest of 2019 and 2020.
