It also tells how from being an Anglican cobbler he turned into a Baptist missionary in Bengal writing, getting books translated in vernaculars and publishing them in different Indian languages. He worked as a pioneer in the development of modern Bengali prose writing. He was also a founder of modern schools for ordinary children and worked as a social reformer.
