Schubert: Notturno in E flat, D897 fauré: Piano Trio in D minor (1922) Ravel: Piano Trio in A minor (1914)
To launch our season, three of France’s most distinguished soloists and chamber musicians bring a musical feast: two splendid French piano trios, plus Schubert’s gorgeous and tenderly affectionate Notturno. A joy to savour, Cassard’s mellow tone and subtle phrasing make him a master of Schubertian language. The Fauré and Ravel piano trios are
equally appealing: the Fauré reveals his wonderful gift for melody; the Ravel, a dazzling tour de force for virtuoso players, is wonderfully well written – a work of true magic with a marvellous finale that, like Fauré’s, is full of colour, energy and contrast.

Strauss: Metamorphosen (in original septet concept) Mahler: Kindertotenlieder (arr. Andreas Tarkmann) Mozart: Divertimento, K137 Stravinsky: Three Dances from The Soldiers Tale
Like Mahler, Richard Strauss’ wonderfully rich harmonies and imaginative orchestration make him a master of the late Romantic style. Composed during the darkest days of war, Metamorphosen expresses his profound grief at the tragic destruction of German culture under the Nazis. Equally anguished,
Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder nevertheless end in a mood of resigned acceptance – more transcendent and uplifting than anticipated. Light and enchanting, young Mozart’s Divertimento makes the perfect foil, gracefully refreshing the spirit. To end their marvellous programme, this superb orchestra brings the Tango, Valse and Ragtime from Stravinsky’s jazz-imbued Soldier’s Tale. With its crisp, tongue-in-cheek wit and diabolical sarcasm, this miniature masterpiece is utterly brilliant!

Britten was not only a brilliant composer but also an inspired pianist. With his lifelong partner, the tenor Peter Pears, he was a legendary interpreter of Schubert. to reflect this affinity these two outstanding artists have framed two of Britten’s song cycles – both
composed for Pears – with two groups of Schubert songs that complement them. the first group is a perfect foil for the six Hölderlin Fragments, with their Classics-inspired meditations on youth, beauty, fame and age. While the second, including the ineffable Die Taubenpost, provide a consoling postscript to the searing Holy Sonnets of John Donne – one of Britten’s greatest works, composed in 1945 after a tour of the concentration camps with yehudi menuhin.

Programme includes: Brahms: Hungarian Dances Bartók: Dance Suite Britten: Gloriana Suite
These two exciting young ensembles play individually and together, exploring dance in all its forms. Bartók’s colourful Dance Suite, with its fine melodies, luscious harmonies and invigorating folk dance rhythms helped secure his international reputation. Britten’s delicious Symphonic Suite includes both courtly and wildly vigorous folk dances that obliged the ladies to go and change their linen! The WYJO Big Band owes its existence to dance and they bring a swinging ball full, including a Raggy Waltz, the roaring ‘20s’ Black Bottom Stomp plus a couple of Ellington gems from his Nutcracker Suite.

A witty and delightful miniature, Beethoven’s lighthearted Duo for Clarinet and Bassoon is in complete contrast to mozart’s passionate and much loved Clarinet Quintet – a masterpiece that takes the listener on a sweeping journey of human emotions. Bursting with youthful energy and sub-titled ‘Go play, boy, play’, Britten’s Three Divertimenti portray his old school friends. Completing this attractive mix of the old and new, Ensemble 360 give the regional première of a piece partly- inspired by Britten, whose centenary we are celebrating: music in the round’s first commission from their outstandingly imaginative young Associate Composer Charlie Piper (who discusses this new work in the pre-concert talk).

Great for families with children aged 3+
Following the huge success of The Chimpanzees of Happytown and Sir Scallywag, Polly Ives and Ensemble 360 present a very special children’s show. With music by Luke Bedford inspired by birds and flight, they bring to life this popular comical children’s book, retelling its hugely enjoyable, life-affirming story with plenty of audience interaction. They show how making music is a joyful experience and a deeper meaning emerges about how we value ourselves and our voices.

In 2010, aged sixteen, Lara Melda won the BBC Young Musician competition with her dazzling performance of Saint-Saëns’ second Piano Concerto. Now touring internationally, we are thrilled to present her first recital here – a splendid array of music by masters of the keyboard.
Two wonderful Bach preludes and fugues precede some equally rewarding Chopin, including this dark, dramatic and ferociously fast Scherzo. Five of Debussy’s colourful and powerfully atmospheric Preludes follow, each one a miniature masterpiece demanding playing of great sensitivity and imagination. Liszt’s glittering tribute to Verdi’s much-loved opera concludes her virtuoso recital.

Benjamin Britten: Elegy; Suite; Going downhill on a bicycle; Phantasy Quartet; alban Berg: Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano; Adagio; oliver Knussen: Cantata; hans werner henze: Olly on the Shore; aaron copland: Nocturne; Ukelele Serenade
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this acclaimed ensemble of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra honours Britten’s centenary with a programme of early works plus small-scale pieces by other closely connected composers. Beautifully crafted,
these fascinating pieces show Britten still determining the direction his music would take. Composed in a single day, his Elegy is affecting and technically assured; Going downhill on a bicycle is experimental and the Phantasy Quartet harks back to early English fantasies for viols. More typical of later works, his Suite shows that at 21 he was already finding his distinctive voice.
