Wimbledon 2014: A Look Back

The Championships, Wimbledon started in 1877 and is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in history. The games played and the players who win on Centre Court have become legends.

The tournament is played at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on grass courts, the games original surface. The Championships start each June, with the Finals taking place on Centre Court in July.

The 1939 Wimbledon tournament started on June 26, with a long programme of Men's Single matches as the opening attractions on all the courts. The weather was unkind to the famous tournament, right, at the start, for low clouds made conditions gloomy in the extreme and rain seemed to threaten at any moment. 3 July 2011 Novak Djokovic, 2011 Wimbledon Men's Singles Champion, Defeats Rafael Nadal In Final. Novak Djokovic has won his first Wimbledon title. The 24-year-old defeated the previous world number one, Rafael Nadal, in four sets, winning, 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.

Despite a significant push by Nadal, including some tremendous play in the third set, and a tight fourth set, the 2008 and 2010 Wimbledon champion could not keep up. Petra Kvitova fought her way to an impressive two set win against the 2004 Wimbledon champion, Maria Sharapova. The 21-year-old Czech overpowered the 3-time grandslam champion Sharapova, despite the fact that the Russian hadn't given up a set until today. This is Kvitova's first grand slam win.

Wimbledon 2012, 7 July . Serena Williams Wins Wimbledon Title, Defeating Agnieszka Radwanska In Final. For Serena Williams, the low point came in early 2011, when she spent hours laying around her home, overwhelmed by a depressing series of health scares that sent her to the hospital repeatedly and kept her away from tennis for 10 months. The high point came Saturday on Centre Court at Wimbledon, when Williams dropped down to the grass, hands covering her face. She was all the way back, a Grand Slam champion yet again.

7 July 2013 Andy Murray Wins Wimbledon Title, Defeats Novak Djokovic In 2013 Final. Andy Murray gave the fans on Henman Hill at the All England Club the victory they have been hoping for as he became the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936. The 26-year-old from Dunblane, Scotland defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 in the 2013 men's singles final.
