I wonder what they would think if I prepared the same meal that the Pilgrims had for their first Thanksgiving. Besides wild turkey that meal probably included swan and passenger pigeons. Passenger pigeons, now extinct, were so thick in the 1620s, it was said you could hear them coming fifteen minutes before you saw them. Included in that group are Chris and Carolyn; John and Marle; the Galls, the Popes, Sandy, Peggy, Mary, and my brother David. Two of my longtime readers, my cousins Shirley and Helen, passed away this year and I mourn their absence. And last on my list to thank, but first in my heart, is my husband Robert. He is the first reader of each of my columns. We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary in October. He is my staunchest supporter, my most loyal of all fans, and the love of my life. I am full of thankfulness that he forgives my faults; laughs at my jokes; and tells me when I’m wrong although I seldom am. Yeah right. On another note, don’t forget that November 11th is Veteran’s Day. Our military men and women deserve our respect for so many reasons. Many give their lives so that we may live in a free society. We should never forget that. This day was originally called Armistice Day, but President Eisenhower changed the title in 1954. It’s a good chance to take a veteran or two to bingo as a way of thanking them for their service. Until next month may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. Eater.com Hosts BingoFoodie website Eater (Eater.com) is lavishing praise on the new film Home Again, directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, daughter of noted movie director, producer and screenwriter Nancy Meyers (who is producing the film). “The film stars Reese Witherspoon as a vibrant, talented divorcee who—okay, who cares,” Eater writes. “Because no one watches Nancy Meyers movies for the story. They watch for the cozy hospitality, and because these are basically the only movies they can take their mothers to.” As a tribute to the film, Eater also created Nancy Meyers Food/Beverage/Hospitality Tropes Bingo, with cards made up of words and phrases popular in such Meyers films as It’s Complicated, Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday and The Parent Trap. Notes Eater: “While Meyers didn’t direct Home Again, as a producer, we suspect her touch will be all over this production—and it really should be, considering she’s perhaps the most successful female writer/director/producer in the business and her kitchens and interiors are key resources for the endlessly remodeling bourgeoisie.”

Illegal Bingo ParkingA mobility scooter rider was slapped with a parking ticket after parking on the pavement outside a Dutch Bingo hall. A photo of the offending scooter was posted on Facebook after it was spotted outside Regent Bingo in Spalding, a South Holland town in the district of Lincolnshire famed for its tulips and annual Tulip Parade. The image caused quite a stir on social media. As one person commented: “Either a practical joke or an extremely stupid traffic warden. No number plate, no means of tracing the owner unless he lies in waiting and even then wouldn’t be able to force the owner to divulge his contact details.”

Senior Moment-um BingoThe Gilford, New Hampshire, Parks and Recreation Department recently sponsored a Senior Moment-um Bingo event at the Community Church Fellowship Hall. Players were invited to bring a lunch to enjoy during the Bingo games, which included a range of prizes for the winners. Senior Moment-um is an active senior adult program in Gilford that that meets once a week for planned activities such as movies, potlucks, day trips and other events.

Celebrating GrandparentsOakwood School in Lemont, Illinois, celebrated Grandparents Day 2017 with its annual Grandparent Bingo—an event designed to honor and celebrate grandparents in the lives of children. This year’s Grandparent Bingo had more than 200 people in attendance. In additional to Bingo there were photo and tattoo stations, and ice cream sundaes for all. This free event has been taking place at Oakwood School for 15 years and remains one of the district’s most popular multi-generational family activities.

4 Bingo Bugle Minnesota Edition — November 2017

The prize-winning questionHi Guy,

I’m semi-new to Bingo and have a question I’m a little too embarrassed to ask anyone about in the Bingo halls.

My question is this: How do they decide what the prizes will be at Bingo? Sometimes you go and it’s all cash prizes and the amounts are kind of small. Other places you go to they have much bigger cash prizes and sometimes challenges where you choose from different prizes that are not always money. I was at one Bingo where someone won a cruise trip. And I’m told that there are other giveaways of all kinds of different things and sometimes drawings for prizes that may happen during Bingo but are not part of the Bingo.

Who decides these prizes and how do you find out what/when these prizes will be the ones that you want? It is exciting to have

all these choices, but confusing to just walk into Bingo and find out on the spot that it’s for cash but also a trip or a big bonanza or something. — Wes J., Louisiana, via email

Hi Wes,For a start, you should never

be embarrassed about asking a question at Bingo.

As a general rule, your fellow Bingo players should be happy to share their knowledge and experience with a less experienced player. The trick is to know when to ask.

Never strike up a conversation with a player when a game is being called: He or she is focused on the task at hand and will be annoyed if you distract them with questions; far better to engage with your fellow Bingo players before the start of the games or possibly during intermission. (Trying to chat with people at the end of the games may also be a bad idea. That’s when folks are grumpy from not winning and anxious to clear out of the hall and exit the parking lot before there’s a traffic jam.)

You certainly should not worry about talking with the Bingo workers, either. They are there to help. But, as noted earlier, there are also busy times for the workers, so choose your time carefully to talk with someone.

In answer to the core part of your question—about Bingo prizes—this is primarily determined by state laws and gaming regulations. You don’t say

what types of Bingo halls you have attended, but it sounds to me like a mix of smaller charity Bingos and larger casino games.

The small Bingos are for charitable, not-for-profit purposes and are regulated very closely by the states in which they are located. Most charity games have caps on prize amounts, numbers of games, numbers of sessions, and so on. Charity Bingo provides players with fun, affordable and challenging Bingo and pull-tabs in a quiet, community atmosphere.

Large-scale casino Bingos are for-profit and, while also regulated, have broader guidelines that permit them to offer bigger jackpots and the opportunity to win other prizes besides. This is where you can experience the glitz of big time Bingo play with a lot more noise, energy and activity.

It’s easy to find out what the prizes will be at the better Bingo games simply by flipping through the pages of the Bingo Bugle newspaper, which contain informative ads as well as a directory with contact information for the best Bingo in town. Best of luck to you in your new Bingo-playing adventure. — Guy

Turning 70 — Dream Lady retires after 33 years Dear Dream Lady,

Those words have greeted me for the past thirty-five years. I started out as a typesetter for Roger Snowden, late publisher of the Bingo Bugle on Vashon Island. Roger needed a writer to follow the popular Aunt Bingo advice columnist. I suggested a dream interpretation column. He said, “Let’s try it,” and it was an immediate success. Dear Dream Lady started out as a lark, but as I opened envelopes, often tear-stained, from reader/dreamers across America, I realized this was serious business.

My first wake-up call was from a New York reader who wanted to commit suicide because he hated his job so much. He wrote about “monsters at work and flying dreams” which symbolized overcoming serious obstacles in his waking life. He was only two years away from retiring. I encouraged him to “hang in there” and think of the many people who did not have jobs; in fact I recall scolding him for being such a whiner—those were naïve words from a “thirty-something” woman who had not yet experienced “bully bosses.” (Roger, by the way was the most enjoyable of all my employers.) The man wrote me a letter after he retired (and had a pension!) and thanked me for “saving his life.” Those letters stick with you.

The second memorable dream was from a woman serving in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Services) in the Naval Reserve. She and her lifelong friend had had a serious spat over a man while in the service and quit being friends. Years later, she was having nightly dreams of her friend trying to contact her. I suggested she hire a private detective, find the friend and make up. She did! She sent me a letter in December of that year noting that she, her friend and their families had celebrated Thanksgiving together! What a joy that was to read!

Through the years, Dream Lady has helped women break up with their mean boyfriends/husbands;

saved a new mother from harming her baby (she was shaking the stove in her kitchen which is a serious dream symbolizing child abuse) and calmed people’s fears when they were visited by deceased loved ones in their dreams. I learned there is a lot we don’t know “out there.” We must not underestimate the power of love from the deceased who reach out to us from the fuzzy borders of life and death.

The “dreams of dead people” have been the most moving–and frequent. In all dreams, the people who died were returning to comfort the dreamer, not scare them. I am deeply respectful of those dreams.

I thank all the faithful readers through the years, but the one who stands out is Harry G. from Sun City, Arizona. His frequent, sometimes unpublished, dreams were a challenge to interpret. After each publication he would send me a thank you card. I haven’t heard from Harry for a while. I hope he is still alive to read this.

Lastly, I thank Tara Snowden, Roger’s daughter. She is as much fun to work with as Roger was. I wish her continued success with the Bingo Bugle. — Dream Lady

Horoscopes for November 2017ARIES (MAR 21-APR 20): As winter draws closer, welcome the chance to slow down and relax with friends and family. You’ve had an energized year that has tested your stamina and usual zeal for life. It’s time for a break. End of the month offers you an opportunity to reconnect with a long lost associate. Invite them to share the holidays with you and revel in your memories. Lucky Days: 9 - 29Lucky Numbers: 24 - 45

TAURUS (APR 21-MAY 21): The writer Robert Anthony has some advice for you: “You can have anything you want if you give up the belief that you don’t have it.” Mental clarity is key. The sharper your focus the quicker you’ll shed belief systems that don’t support your goals. The New Moon on the 18th offers a job opportunity that can turn your world upside down. Lucky Days: 10 - 21Lucky Numbers: 6 - 19

GEMINI (MAY 22-JUN 21): You’re the zodiac’s eternal child–curious, effervescent and bursting with unlimited potential. But wait! Presently Saturn, the planet of wisdom, is asking that you make a commitment to one key area of your life and lend it your full support. Persistence will pave the way for ultimate success.Lucky Days: 4 - 23Lucky Numbers: 45 - 68

CANCER (JUN 22-JUL 22): Jupiter, the luck planet is now passing through your house of self-expression. All systems are go! Don’t allow shyness to undermine your desire to shine. Select your most novel projects and round up the support you need to put them forward. The world is eager to engage with your unique visions–bring it forth. Lucky Days: 3 - 29Lucky Numbers: 44 - 56

LEO (JUL 23-AUG 23): Time to leave what’s comfortable and explore what seems distant or unfamiliar, but not improbable. How to begin? Take up a new cause or practice that works to energize the mind. A big theme for you in November is how your thoughts color your moods and emotions. If you stay engaged intellectually you can overcome niggling doubts that might undermine your plans. Lucky Days: 11 - 19Lucky Numbers: 3 - 66

VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23): Your friends and family are looking to you to put into words what many of them can’t communicate. This will require tact. Employ your paradoxical nature to convey your message but don’t become irreverent. Strive for a balance between blurting out the truth and expressing your wisdom with grace and sensitivity. Lucky Days: 8 - 13Lucky Numbers: 19 - 35

LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23): The New Moon on the 18th shines a spotlight on your finances and new ways for you to tap into new resources. And you need those funds right now. Your love of luxury and fashion can occasionally tax your bank account, so find a way to maintain your high standards without getting behind the eight ball. Lucky Days: 18 - 29Lucky Numbers: 34 - 63

SCORPIO (OCT 24th-NOV 22nd): The New Moon in your sign on the 18th has a special message for you from Ralph Waldo

Emerson: “Our faith comes in moments; our vice is habitual.” Because you are an emotional dynamo it’s important that you get a conscious grip on the power of your instincts. Harness your obsessive nature to what inspires and uplifts and then allow your will to lead the way. Lucky Days: 5 - 18Lucky Numbers: 12 - 47SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23rd-DEC 21st): Despite your keen intuition and preference for brevity, you’re going to need to slow down this month and observe closely the contents of your unconscious. It’s through your dreams and contemplative states that the guidance you seek will arrive. Let your higher self show the way. Don’t attempt to second-guess it. Lucky Days: 14 - 18Lucky Numbers: 3 – 39

CAPRICORN (DEC 22nd-JAN 20th): The New Moon on the 18th allows you to strike a balance between social activities and solitude. You need both conditions to bolster your creative drive. Lively exchanges can inspire you, but you also need quiet time and privacy to focus your attention. Because the holiday season can be so hectic, make sure that you schedule time for contemplation and silence. Lucky Days: 7 - 16Lucky Numbers: 45 - 55

AQUARIUS (JAN 21st-FEB 19th): Consider this quote from Victor Borge should you feel misunderstood by peers or family members right now: “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.” Because you have a gift for spotting trends that are off the beaten path, apply this skill to how you communicate and express your desires. People respond positively to novelty and surprise, make those your touchstones this month. Lucky Days: 6 - 12Lucky Numbers: 18 - 69

PISCES (FEB 20th-MAR 20th): Travel time. Either literally or figuratively, but you have got to break free from the ho-hum and familiar. If you can’t book a trip to Europe the next best plan is to take some short, quick sojourns. Consider nearby areas that you are intrigued by, but have never explored. New environments offer you the inspiration you need to make it through the end of the year. Lucky Days: 7 - 19Lucky Numbers: 24 - 26

Complaint hotline staffed by vetsVeterans have a new complaint hotline — the White House VA Hotline. Best of all, it’s staffed by veterans. The toll-free Complaint Hotline number is 855-948-2311.

Remember that this is not a crisis line. If you have a crisis, call 1-800-273-8255 and press 1.

This news means veterans are being hired and trained, and that’s a good thing. No longer will the phones ring with no one answering. No longer will our

calls be kicked over to third-party contractors who are clueless about veteran issues. No longer will a million calls be dropped.

When you call the complaint hotline, a veteran will ask you some questions: your name, time of service and maybe your Social Security number. Don’t flinch at that; they need to know who you are so your specific need can be addressed. Have your dates of service handy, just in case.

If you have a complaint about your medical care, or your claim that’s been sitting for two years, or the paperwork you have to keep resending because it gets lost, now is the time to speak your mind. Your complaint or questions will be noted, and if an answer isn’t immediately available, you’ll get one within in two weeks. Calls will be confidential.

So, make a note: 855-948-2311 will get you to people who know the questions to ask to get you the answers you need.

Stranger invasionDear Aunt Bingo:

We had the craziest invasion of strangers at our local Bingo hall this week.

Ours is an urban church Bingo in an interesting area that is a mix of older neighborhoods on the back streets and trendy new shops, theaters, bars and restaurants on the main avenues.

Some office buildings and churches are still located on these avenues as well, but they are usually dark by the time evening comes and the trendy places get going.

One of the exceptions to this general rule is our Catholic church, which is used for many

community events, including Bingo on Wednesday and Friday nights.

The church has its own large parking lot and entrances in the back, which is how most people come and go from church activities. It’s convenient because you can visit without having to elbow your way through the crowds of people on the avenues. And it’s amazing how, no matter how noisy it gets outside, you never hear anything when you’re in the community hall or meeting rooms.

This Friday, as people were arriving at the church for Bingo, a small tour shuttle could be seen parked in the road by the parking lot. We didn’t pay it much attention because buses and shuttles sometimes pass through the area.

But about 20 minutes before the games were to begin, the shuttle driver and a woman who I assume was one of his passengers came into the hall and asked for the Bingo coordinator. They had a brief conversation, then left. Right after that, the coordinator went to the caller’s microphone and made an announcement.

She said that a tour group had arrived at one of the avenue restaurants and that the restaurant had messed up and overbooked their dining room. They had arrived after another large group had been seated and had to wait a while for their tables. They asked if they could come in

and play Bingo while they waited, and the manager had said yes.

Right after that, the group of about 25 well-dressed men and women came filing into the hall. We all applauded for them and made them feel welcome, and people got up and moved to different seats so that they could sit together.

They stayed and played for two Bingo sessions, until word came that their seats were ready at the restaurant. Then they all packed up and headed out the door together.

It was so fun and unexpected to have these out-of-town folks pop in to share an evening of Bingo with us. And it was especially nice of them not to win. — M.W., Illinois, via email

Dear M.W.:What a welcome letter. You

paint such a wonderful picture of your neighborhood with its mix of traditional old and trendy new, which sounds like it all blends well together. It strikes me as place I might like to live…especially come dinnertime.

Your story was particularly interesting because, while it was kind of the Bingo coordinator and your fellow Bingo players to make the tour group feel welcome, it was equally amazing that the visitors had decided to turn lemons into lemonade by joining a church Bingo for an hour or two instead of sitting on a boring shuttle bus getting hungry and cranky.

Two thumbs up to the driver and passenger for venturing into your community hall and asking if they could join you. I am curious, though—did the shuttle driver play Bingo too? — Aunt Bingo

Veggie heavenDear Annie,

Can you give me some simple recipes for vegetables. I am trying to introduce more healthy meals to my kids. They are fast food addicts and it’s driving me crazy. — Crazy Mom from New Mexico

Dear Crazy Mom,I have two suggestions. The

first is real easy—Cauliflower Rice looks just life real white rice—I serve it with fish, chicken, beef, anything. My Vegetable Medley can include any vegetable you choose. Prepare it with Stir Fry Sauce. Enjoy! —Annie

CAULIFLOWER RICE1 cauliflower head1-2 tablespoons olive oil

Cut cauliflower into small pieces. Using a food processor, mix until the cauliflower looks like rice. Repeat until the whole

cauliflower is riced. Toss the cauliflower with olive oil. Preheat oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread cauliflower in a thin layer. Bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly brown, turning with tongs every five minutes to avoid burning.

STIR FRY SAUCE6 tablespoons soy sauce2 teaspoons grated ginger2 small cloves garlic, minced2 teaspoons olive oil

Combine the above ingredients in a small bowl and stir well.

VEGETABLE MEDLEY¼ cup vegetable oil4-5 carrot stalks, sliced3 red, green, yellow and/or orange bell peppers, seeded and sliced¼ lb. snow peas½ lb. mushrooms1-2 cloves garlic, diced 1 large onion, slicedsalt and pepper, to taste

In a dry wok or large frying pan over medium heat, add the oil and carrots. Toss for at least five minutes. Then add the other veggies and continue to stir and toss. Quickly add the stir fry sauce to the pan over a medium to high heat. Simmer, stirring and tossing occasionally, for at least 1-2 minutes. Taste and adjust the seasonings. Serve immediately.

Write to “Ask Annie” c/o Annie Ennis, 8312 SE 168th Trinity Place, The Villages, FL 32162. So Ask Annie. Don’t forget you can E-mail me at [email protected]. And let’s get cooking.

Home SafeWith Hurricane Irma closing in fast, Tiffany Hatfield of Ocoee, Florida, wasted no time in packing up her three young daughters and setting off on the long drive to Virginia to stay with a friend. After hours behind the wheel, Hatfield pulled over at a convenience store in North Carolina for a bathroom break. While there, she bought a pair of $5 Diamond Dazzler tickets, which she scratched in the parking lot. The first ticket was a dud. With the second, however, the first number Hatfield scratched matched for $1,000, and kept climbing. By the time she was done, Hatfield had revealed a jackpot of $10,000. Once the hurricane had passed, the family returned to find only minor damage to their home. Hatfield says she will use her winnings for a much-needed vacation for her daughters and husband, Ryan, who is deployed with the Navy until December.

Payoff for PanamanianOnline lottery ticket service theLotter now has its second U.S. lottery jackpot winner—a Panamanian player who claimed a $30 million Florida Lotto jackpot. Inspired by an article about a Scottish lottery winner, Aura Dominguez Canto, 60, of

Panama City, Panama, began playing American lotteries this summer using the online service. After signing up, Canto decided to play every draw of the Florida Lottery for a month. She didn’t have much luck in the first three weeks, then came week four, when Canto landed the jackpot which she took as a one-time, lump-sum payment of $21 million. TheLotter is an international lottery ticket messenger service, which physically purchases paper lottery tickets in the U.S. and Europe on behalf of its customers.

Biggest Jackpot EverSome lottery winners spend months hiring financial experts and planning how to best claim their lottery jackpot. But not so with the winner of the largest lottery jackpot ever claimed by a single ticket—$758.7 million. Upon learning that she held the winning Powerball ticket, 53-year-old Mavis Wanczyk of Chicopee, Massachusetts, just walked into state lottery headquarters the morning after the drawing and handed over the ticket for validation of her prize. Mavis chose to take a lump sum payment of $480 million, which works out to $336 million after taxes. As press time she had no immediate plans for what to do with her winnings.

Poker Talk

Pocket queens run into troubleBy Chad Holloway

A pair of queens is the third-best starting hand in poker, behind only pocket aces and pocket kings. It’s always nice to look down and see two ladies staring back at you. But every once in a while, you won’t be able to play your queens in a straightforward way.

A great example of this took place on Day 2 of the Mid-States Poker Tour Venetian Main Event, a tournament held in June at the Venetian Las Vegas that drew 3,273 entrants and crushed the advertised $2.5 million guarantee.

With the blinds at 6,000-12,000 plus an ante of 2,000, Clifton Green moved all in for 153,000 from middle position, and inaugural MSPT Venetian champ Drake Bronk paused for a few beats before calling from the button. An unidentified player in the big blind peeked down at Qh Qc and then hit the tank for several minutes.

You might wonder why it took him so long to make a decision. After all, he held one of the best hands in poker. However, this was actually a tricky spot.

Nowadays, instead of trying to put an opponent on a specific hand, experienced players try to put opponents on a range of

hands. Here, the player in the big blind had to determine what sort of hands Green would shove with, and what sort of hands Bronk would merely call with. For the former, you can deduce that a player would shove his last 12.75 big blinds with hands such as pocket pairs, a big ace, and maybe even any two face cards. That’s a pretty strong range, and when Bronk followed with a call, it signaled that Bronk’s range was probably even stronger.

For our hero with the queens, the big decision was whether Bronk was just flat-calling with pocket aces or pocket kings, calling with a coin-flip hand like A-K, or calling with an inferior pair like 9-9, 10-10 or J-J. Pocket queens would be beaten by two of those hands, would be 50/50 against one, and would dominate three of them. This wasn’t an easy spot.

There would be nothing wrong with calling here, nor with folding those queens. After all, the player in the big blind had only invested 12,000 and could have sacrificed it to get out of a complicated situation and simply move on to the next hand.

Ultimately, the player in the big blind made the call. Green turned over 6d 6s, which was within his expected range of hands. Unfortunately for the ladies, they ran smack dab into Bronk’s Ks Kd, which made the 2014 Venetian champ a 64.6 percent favorite.

The board ran out 9d 10c 5s 2h Ad, and Bronk’s kings held up to give him a monster pot, while Green was eliminated in 118th place for $4,491. Bronk would go on to finish in 50th place, good for $8,019.

The next time you look down at pocket queens, be sure to take note of your opponents’ prior actions and proceed with caution.

Quick guide to casino compsComp is casino jargon for “complimentaries,” the freebies that casinos give players to keep them loyal to their establishment. Freebies include everything from free meals to free show tickets to free play mailed to you by casinos. And contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be a high roller to get your share of the over 1 billion dollars worth of amenities that casinos give away annually (that’s right a billion). You just have to understand the system for getting them and then ask for one. Here are some tips.

1. Join a slot club. If your spouse also plays, sign him/her up. All slot clubs are not created equal so be sure you understand how much you need to play through

the machine (coin-in) to earn one point and the number of points you need for specific comps (note: some casinos base their comps on the amount you win or coin-out—the difference between coin-in and coin-out is insignificant). It’s also best to concentrate your play in a few casinos to better understand the subtleties of their comping system and to show the casino you are a steady, loyal player.

2. Virtually all slot clubs will rebate a percent of coin-in in comps and sometimes cash back (same day or on a return visit, the latter is known as “bounce back”). The rebate percentage is not the same from one casino to another so shop around. You often can find information about a casino’s slot club via their web site or consult vpfree2.com or lasvegasadvisor.com.

3. Many casinos offer special promotions that double or triple a member’s points during a specific day of the week. If possible you should plan to play the slot or video poker machines during these promotions since your points will accumulate faster.

4. If you are a slot player, consider learning video poker because you can get returns slightly under or over 100% by learning the correct video poker playing strategies. Add in the comps and/or cash back by using your player’s card and you’ll be playing with a positive expectation (not possible with slots).

5. For table players, get rated

when you play. Phone the casino and ask to speak to the casino marketing department to find out how to go about getting rated and to start the paperwork on establishing a credit line. Know how much you need to bet and for how long in order to start earning comps.

6. To get rated when you play, show the dealer your slot (or VIP) card. The floor supervisor will observe the length of time you play and your betting limits and then enters the data into the computer’s player tracking system.

7. Table comps are based on what the casino thinks they will win from your action. By betting and playing less then the casino thinks or playing blackjack skillfully you’ll get comps faster. Tips: play at full tables, take frequent breaks, and play slowly. For more details on the art of getting comps, read Max Rubin’s book, Comp City and Jean Scott’s series of Frugal Gambling books.

8. Establish a relationship with a casino host because they have the authority to issue you a variety of comps (free/discounted/upgraded rooms, meals, show tickets, transportation from airport, and more). Ask friends for the name of a host that they can recommend, or contact the casino marketing department for the name of one.

9. Contact the host before your casino trip, introduce yourself, and let him/her know what games you play, your betting level, etc.

and when you plan to visit. Make sure you meet your host when you arrive to begin establishing a personal relationship.

10. Table game supervisors and slot supervisors also have the power of the pen to issue comps without debiting points from your comp account. Treat them with the same respect and try hard to build a relationship with them.

11. Lastly, don’t bet more or play longer for the sake of a comp. Just play your normal game and then ask for a comp in a polite and courteous way. When in doubt, always ask.

Check-in servicesDear Savvy Senior,

Are there any services you know of that check in on elderly seniors who live alone. I wor-ry about my 84-year-old father falling or having a medical emer-gency, and not being able to get to the phone to call for help. And he won’t wear a lifeline help-button. — Desperate Daughter

Dear Desperate,Depending on where your

dad lives, there are check-in call services, volunteer visiting pro-grams, and a variety of technology options you can turn to that can help you keep tabs on him. Here are several to check into.

Daily Check-in CallsTo make sure your dad is OK

every day, consider signing him up with a daily check-in call service program. These are tele-phone reassurance programs run by police or sheriff’s departments in hundreds of counties across the country and are usually pro-vided free of charge.

Here’s how they work. A com-puter automated phone system would call your dad at a desig-

nated time each day to check-in. If he answers, the system would assume everything is OK. But if he didn’t pick up or if the call goes to voice mail after repeated tries, you (or whoever his desig-nee is) would get a notification call. If you are not reachable, calls are then made to backup people who’ve also agreed to check on your dad if necessary.

The fallback is if no one can be reached, the police or other emer-gency services personnel will be dispatched to his home.

To find out if this service is available in your dad’s commu-nity, call his local police depart-ment’s nonemergency number.

If, however, the police or sheriff’s department in your dad’s community doesn’t provide a daily check-in call program, there are a number of companies you can turn to that offer similar services offered directly to con-sumers for under $15 per month. Some to check into include the CARE senior calling pro-gram, CareCheckers and IAmFine.

Volunteer Visiting ProgramsAnother option you may also

want to investigate is volunteer visiting programs, which are usu-ally run by churches, community groups, or social service agencies.

These programs provide vol-unteers who will visit an older adult in their home usually for an hour or two once a week, pro-viding companionship as well as the reassurance that someone is checking in on a regular basis. They can also alert you if they notice your dad’s health or living

conditions start to decline. To find out if these services

are available, check with local churches or the area agency on aging near your dad, call the El-dercare Locator at 800-677-1116 for contact information.

Technology SolutionsTechnology also offers a num-

ber of ways to help keep your dad safe at home, and help you keep an eye on him from afar. For exam-ple, for safety and peace of mind there are medical alert systems, which provide a wearable “help button” that would allow him to call for help anytime he needed it. Some of these systems (like Bay Alarm Medical, BayAlarmMedical.com) also offer wall-mounted but-tons that can be placed near the floor in high fall risk areas like the bathroom or kitchen, if he didn’t wear a help button.

And to help you keep daily tabs on your dad, there are wireless sensor-monitoring systems (like Silver Mother, Sen.se/silvermoth-er) you could put in his home that will notify you if something out of the ordinary is happening; and video monitoring cameras (like the Nest Cam, Nest.com/camera) that have built-in motion and sound detection that will let you know when something is detected, and two-way audio that will let you talk and listen to him.

Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of The Savvy Senior book.

Cynthia won $1,000 on the Blue at Rose-ville Bingo Hall.

John Thomas won the $500 Bonanza at West St. Paul Bingo Palace.
