Key personnel from certified companies such as Chain of Custody administrators, marketing and sales, are once again invited to participate in one of two workshops we will be hosting in the New Year. The first will be held in London on Wednesday 11th January and the second in Birmingham on Wednesday 18th January. These popular half day seminars cover a range of topics including Sustainable Forest Management, Chain of Custody certification, the use of the PEFC label and the market drivers for certified forest products. They are free to attend but places are strictly limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis so early registration is recommended. For an invitation and full details visit: www.pefc. co.uk/events/pefc-stakeholder-seminars The Winners of the Structural Timber Awards 2016 were revealed at a gala dinner held at the Birmingham National Conference Centre during Timber Expo and UK Construction Week. These Awards recognise outstanding projects and innovative products that are promoting excellence in structural timber across the UK. Designed by Sarah Wigglesworth Architects, Mellor Primary School, near Stockport, scooped the top prize in the Best Education Project category, which was sponsored by PEFC UK. This category showcases schemes that have used timber technology to create exceptional buildings and vibrant learning spaces for both students and staff. The judges praised the winning project as: “An excellent scheme with an honest simple structure but importantly uses the structure as a learning resource.” Presenting the Award to the worthy winner, PEFC CEO and Secretary General Ben Gunneberg commented “It is always fantastic to see the ways in which timber is used throughout the construction industry to produce such magnificent, sustainable and environmentally-sound buildings. The role PEFC-certified timber plays is vitally important and this is being reflected across Europe with the levels of engineered wood used on some landmark schemes.” It was also encouraging to note there were many examples of PEFC-certified timber being specified across all 15 awards categories and to see cross laminated (CLT) and glulam increasingly adopted as a sustainable alternative to steel and concrete. In recognition of the vital role PEFC-certified companies play in growing the market for certified products, we have introduced a new newsletter feature picking out a key company that is promoting sustainability and responsible purchasing. We start with Heritage Doors & Floors.

Heritage Doors & Floors Group provide a range of joinery products from its manufacturing facilities in Sheffield. They began manufacturing doors for retail customers in the 1990’s and soon became known for excellent quality solid oak doors. The range has rapidly expanded to include flooring in a range of styles as well as other joinery products. They now supply products to major companies such as Howden Joinery and Jewson.

Lloyd Barnes, Director at Heritage Doors & Floors said: “At Heritage we believe that using sustainably-sourced timber is the only responsible way to manufacture timber products. Gaining PEFC certification has been very important in giving our customers confidence in our sustainable timber sourcing and has already enabled us to develop additional business with new customers.”

Packaging Innovations 2016In September, PEFC UK joined forces

once again with SFI and PEFC certified company, AB Packaging Group, to exhibit

for the third year in succession at Packaging Innovations. The two-day show was held at London Olympia on 14-15 September.

The event provided valuable opportunities for the PEFC team to engage with leading brand owners and retailers to promote the PEFC label as an assurance of responsibly-sourced packaging. It was very encouraging to see an increasing number of our fellow exhibitors proudly displaying their PEFC certification credentials as an integral part of their show graphics.

Surface Design Awards 2017

PEFC short-listed for TTJ Environmental Achievement AwardIn September, PEFC was delighted to learn that we’d been shortlisted in the Environmental Achievement category of the annual TTJ Awards, alongside Korlam for Kielsteg and Premier Forest Products. Timber Trades Journal (TTJ) is the most respected UK title in its industry sector.

PEFC’s inclusion on the shortlist was a result of our commitment to advancing sustainable forest management in Asia. Over the past twelve months, PEFC has made significant progress in developing and advancing sustainable forest management and growing demand for forest certification in the region.

Through a range of innovative methods and partnerships, PEFC International has enabled stakeholders throughout the region to develop national forest certification systems and increased the area of sustainably-managed forests. In addition, it has grown market demand for responsibly-produced

products and improved access to forest certification for forest owners in the region.

While Premier Forest Products pipped PEFC to the top prize on the day, we were delighted to receive such recognition for our work in this key

region.

Implementing PEFC Group Chain of Custody Certification

Companies come together to form a Chain of Custody certification group and appoint a Group Manager. The Group Manager develops and administers the certification procedures for the group and undertakes annual internal audits of the members. This enables each member to be certified together under this formally identifiable group.

The fundamental basis of Group Certification is that all members of the Group must formally commit to complying with all the requirements of PEFC Chain of Custody and demonstrate this during the internal audit. Once this is achieved, they are eligible to supply PEFC-certified material as a part of the unbroken supply chain and use the PEFC label.

The exact steps necessary to implement Chain of Custody, as well as the costs involved, depend on multiple factors (such as employee size, complexity of production and turnover). Group Managers co-ordinate the information produced by Scheme Members and is the certificate holder. A Group Manager can be a specific Group Member, an experienced legal entity such as a consultant or a trade association.
