The Siemens S70 streetcar vehicles will feature the OC Streetcar logo and will be painted with the familiar blue, orange, and white, in keeping with other OCTA transit services. Each vehicle has room for 70 seats and can carry up to 180 passengers at a time. The OC Streetcar is expected to carry approximately 7,300 passengers per day within its first year of operation. Construction on OC Streetcar Project Begins

On December 4, 2018, the City of Santa Ana celebrated the grand opening of the Bristol Avenue Protected Bikeway. Funded through OC Go (also known as Orange County Mea-sure M) and local gas tax funds, the project is the first of its kind in Santa Ana and Orange County. What makes this project unique is the constructed raised median that separates the bikeway users from motor vehicle traffic, providing a safe and low-stress environ-ment for users. The landscaped median is approximately 4-feet wide while the concrete bikeway is 6-feet wide. This project was constructed as part of the most recent phase of the Bristol widening project, but the city has secured grant funding to update the previous phases of the Bristol widening to include a protected bikeway as well.
In the City of Santa Ana, 55 percent of residents do not have access to a motor ve-hicle. Recognizing the need to provide a safe transportation system for all roadway users, the Santa Ana City Council has championed complete streets and active transportation projects in the City. As a result, we now serve as the leader for all of Orange County. In the past four years, the City of Santa Ana has secured $45 million in grant funds for bi-cycle, pedestrian, and safety improvement projects. While the Bristol Avenue Protected Bikeway may be the first of its kind, it most certainly will not be the last.

Commercial Recycling Is MandatoryCalifornia’s mandatory commercial recycling law, Assembly Bill 341 (AB 341), has required all businesses and multi-family dwellings (five or more units) to have recycling services since July 1, 2012. The City has sent letters and self-reporting forms to those that fall under this requirement. The City is required to provide education and assistance to owners, property managers and businesses to implement recycling programs to meet this mandate. EcoNomics, Inc., a recycling services consultant, will assist with free on-site technical assistance to help your business or multi-family property comply with AB 341. This hands-on, site-specific guidance has proven to be the best way to implement sustainable and cost-effective recycling programs.

Organics Recycling Mandate ExpandsUnder Assembly Bill 1826 (AB 1826), California businesses, including non-profit organizations, public and private schools, and government agencies, are required to reduce the amount of organics sent to landfills. Organics include both food scraps and yard debris. As of January 1, 2019, organics recycling is mandatory for businesses that generate 4 or more cubic yards of solid waste (trash, recyclables, and organics) per week. Multi-family properties that generate 4 or more cubic yards of solid waste per week are also required to recycle yard debris but do not have to provide food waste recycling at this time.
The City is required to provide education and assistance to owners, property managers and businesses, to implement organics recycling programs to meet this mandate. EcoNomics, Inc. will also assist with free on-site technical assistance to help your business or multi-family property comply with the organics recycling requirements of AB 1826.

We use it every day of our lives, and our lives literally depend on it, yet we don’t often think about where our water comes from and where it flows after we use it. Here in the City of Santa Ana, we work hard to ensure the maintenance of a sustainable, reliable water supply at all times, including in periods of drought and shortage.
The City relies on a combination of local groundwater, imported water, and recycled water to meet its needs and works together with two primary agencies, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) and Orange County Water District (OCWD).
The City’s main source of groundwater is the Orange County Groundwater Basin. Groundwater levels are managed within a safe operating range to protect the long-term sustainability of the basin. There are three major aquifer systems operating within the Basin: the Shallow Aquifer, the Principal Aquifer, and the Deep Aquifer. These three are connected as groundwater flows between them. Groundwater supplies 74 percent of the water used in Santa Ana.
In addition to groundwater, Santa Ana currently relies on approximately 25 percent imported water and 1 percent recycled water to round out its supply portfolio.

How does your water get to the tap? In Santa Ana, three-quarters of your water is pumped from our local groundwater basin, nearly a quarter is imported from the State Water Project, and the remainder comes from recycled water. It is then treated to ensure safety before it is delivered to homes and businesses. Water is then distributed via large pipes called water mains, which are usually buried under roads and sidewalks, transporting this vital resource throughout the city. Save Money and Reduce Food WasteHow much food do Americans throw away? The short answer is “too much.” Rosa Rolle, an expert on food waste and loss at the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, said, “We buy too much food. We don’t finish our plates.”
An average family of four could save up to $1,500 a year just by not wast-ing food. Wouldn’t that be nice? Most Americans throw out food when it starts to look or smell bad. Dairy, produce, and meats are the most commonly tossed items because they spoil the most quickly. Throwing away food not only wastes hard-earned money, but also valuable re-sources, such as water, fuel, and supplies used to grow, make, and ship the food in the first place.
Worldwide, about one-third of all ed-ible food is wasted, either in the process of growing, processing, transporting, and selling it or after it is sold. As a result, food waste is the single largest category of waste in municipal landfills. Instead of feeding people in need, nutritious food is
sitting in landfills and creating greenhouse gas emissions. In wealthy countries, like the United States and Canada, around 40% of wasted food is thrown out by con-sumers like you and me.
To waste less food in your home, fol-low these simple tips:
• Buy only the food you need. • Order only the food you will eat in
restaurants.• Learn how to store food correctly.
Food lasts longer than you think.• Know the difference between the
“sell-by,” “use-by,” and “best-by” dates on products.

Recycle Right!The City of Santa Ana, in partnership with the City’s waste hauler, Waste Management, continues to reward customers who are recycling properly through the “Recycle Right Challenge.” The Prize Patrol searches Santa Ana neighborhoods for recycling carts that contain only those items on the recyclables list and no contaminating items, such as food waste, clothing, or diapers. If a randomly selected recycling cart has no contaminating items, the resident wins a $25 gift card.

Only Rain Down the DrainDid you know that everything that enters the City’s storm drain system flows untreated out to the ocean? Do your part in protecting our creeks, rivers, and beaches by following these tips:
• Always use a drip pan when maintaining your vehicle to prevent automotive fluid spills onto your driveway, the street, or into the gutter.
• Pick up pet waste and dispose of it in the trash.
• When washing your car, use minimal water and biodegradable soap. Whenever possible, avoid washing soapy water into the street and instead direct it onto a
landscaped area where it can absorb into the ground.
• Keep trash can lids closed to avoid litter being blown into the street or gutter.
• Always follow directions on pesticide labels and never use more than specified. Avoid applying pesticides prior to rain events.

Contamination in Your Recycling Cart?It May Cost You!Almost half of items placed in recycling containers are contaminating clean recyclable material. In order for the City of Santa Ana to comply with State mandates and increase recycling, we need to clean up what goes in the recycling cart. Have you ever heard the saying, “One bad apple spoils the bunch”? The same is true for recycling, where one non-recyclable item can spoil an entire batch of otherwise good materials.
It may seem like such a small detail — a wrong or dirty item in the recycling bin — but it represents a global problem that’s preventing thousands of tons of recyclables from ever seeing a second life. One easy way to avoid contaminat-ing recyclable material is to never put wet or food-soiled items in the recycling container.
In an effort to remind residents to Re-cycle Right and keep contamination out of the recycling cart, the City has established a contamination penalty. The first and second time contamination is identified within your recycling cart, a courtesy no-tice approved by the City will be left that identifies the contamination. On the third and every instance thereafter, a contami-
nation penalty of $10 may be assessed by the City on your next trash bill.
