Meet Our COver Designer...My name is Elissa Koppel, a senior at Shorewood High School. Be-sides studying Graphic Art and De-sign, I experience art through AP Art History class and learning Arabic calligraphy. I play piano for Shore-wood’s Jazz Band. I enjoy perform-ing in the AFS’s Talent Showcase. Over the summer, I participated in Watershed Wisdom and Interna-tional Kallah. In my free time, I love to go hiking and compose music.

The Shorewood High School Graphic Design Program is com-prised of introductory, intermediate and advanced level classes. Within the program, students are taught various computer soft-ware programs. The higher-level classes are taught in a design studio atmosphere wherein clients come to the class to present their ideas to the students and they work on projects that are both school as well as community based. Shorewood High School’s Graphic Design Programs are a helpful option for those students who plan on going into Graphic Design, Advertising, or other Communication related fields at the college level. - Jeff Zimpel, SHS Graphic Design Teacher.

[email protected]

I grew up in Sheboygan, where I played soccer, basketball, and baseball at Sheboygan South High School. I went on to play baseball and graduate from Marian University with a degree in Marketing and a minor in Sports and Recreation Management. For the past six years, I have been a manager for a local Wal-green’s store. As a manager, I have had many valuable experi-ences in efficiency and customer service. Outside of the fitness industry I enjoy going to concerts, local festivals, and am an avid

Badger, Packer and Brewer fan. I am very excited about this new opportunity to manage the Shorewood Community Fitness Center. I welcome any suggestions and I look forward to working with the diverse Shorewood community. Lastly, I would like to thank everyone for making me feel so welcome. - Jake Wilson

ice skating Lessons at Pettit nationaL ice center - age 3 - 12Is your child interested in learning how to ice skate? Designed by U.S. Figure Skating, the Learn to Skate Classes enable beginning skaters to experience the fundamentals of the sport to start a lifetime commitment to health and fitness. Each session will have goals for participants to master before moving on to the next level. To see which lesson is right for your child, please see descriptions below. Be sure to choose the appropriate level. Classes meet once a week for 6 weeks. Recommended equipment: helmet, mittens/gloves, long/snow pants, sweatshirts, winter jacket, and skates. Skates can be rented at the Pettit for an additional fee. Fee includes six, 40 minute classes, 20 minutes of designated skating time. “Participants only” practice time is immediately following every class. Complimentary public skating on day of class when available, plus four additional complimentary public skating passes to be used for practice time on non-class days throughout session. To register, visit our website at shorewoodschools.org or call the Recreation Department at (414) 963-6913 x 4.

The parent/adult must be on the ice wearing skates (with their child) during all lessons. Snowplow Sam - This program is a progression of three classes designed to teach the fundamen-tals of skating to children, ages 3 - 5 years, with little or no skating experience. Skaters will learn basic balance and skating skills in an age appropriate and fun environment. Please specify level. Class participants will learn the basics of skating with and without their hockey sticks including falling and getting up, marching, 2-foot glides, stopping and more. The focus will be on skating skills and not the actual game of hockey. Although this is a hockey geared class it is always recommended for new skaters to begin in figure skates and change to hockey skates once a solid sense of balance has been established.

Basic 1 - 8 - The Basic Skills Program teaches students progressively more difficult moves through eight levels of skating. Upon competition of the Basic 1 through 8 Program, skaters will have knowledge of the sport enabling them to advance to more specialized areas of skating. If a child is skating (or taking lessons) for the first time, the student should register for the Basic 1 class level. Students are evaluated at the first class session to gauge their skill/ability level, and are placed in another class if the their skill is applicable. Please specify level. YOUTH PROGRAMS BEGINNING IN FEBRUARY

SIS ATHLETICSThe purpose of the Shorewood School District’s youth sports programs is to guide each participant - boys and girls - through an organized program that will develop the fundamentals of each sport. Sports programs are open to any student who lives in the Village of Shorewood. Girls and Boys Cross Country or Basketball are great examples of some of the sports that are offered. Whatever your child chooses, they will be taught the fundamentals of the sport. Skill development will be stressed throughout the season and participants will receive a basic under-standing of rules, sportsmanship and teamwork by the end of the season. Please contact LeVar Ridgeway, Shorewood School District’s Athletic Director, via e-mail at [email protected] or phone at (414) 963-6924.
