SHALOM | Welcome to the J
Did you know?
The J has 16,000 members between the Rosenbloom J in Owings Mills and the Weinberg J in Park Heights.
The Downtown Baltimore JCC (DBJCC) in Federal Hill is a drop-in parenting center with 115 members and engages a total of 500 individuals annually through programs such as Shabbat Family Happy Hour and Sunday morning’s Bagels and Babies. The J offers engagement programs for families throughout Baltimore City and County.
Charm City Tribe offers creative, relevant and meaningful Jewish experiences for as many as 500 Jewish young adults per year through 1:1 meetings with Rabbi Jessy, small group gatherings for Jewish learning, and large-scale events held in downtown venues.
The J provides social, cultural and recreational programs to more than 725 senior adults. In addition, the J helps support recreational programming for individuals living in Weinberg Village in Owings Mills and Weinberg Manor in Park Heights.
Over 28,000 people annually attend events at the Gordon Theater. 1,750 kids attended J Camps this past summer. 200 people with special needs participate in our year round programs. Since it opened last December, we've tracked over 8,000 visitors to J Town, our interactive Jewish play zone at the Weinberg Park Heights JCC.
We also work with 165 program partners to make our JCC programs successful. Our partnersbring their expertise and enhance our ability to offer programs to our community. Partners include Jewish agencies, synagogues, day schools, LifeBridge Health, Stevenson University, and other local businesses.
Did you know we are the oldest JCC in North America? Now in our 62nd year, our J engages thousands of people weekly and connects with close to 40,000-50,000 people a year.
One of the reasons we are able to touch so many people is because we receive more than $4,000,000 from The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore. This generous allocation also enables us to offer outstanding facilities and provide more than $800,000 in financial assistance per year.
Our J is about strengthening our Jewish community while remaining a place where everyone can experience Jewish culture in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Please enjoy all that we offer and thanks for making the J an integral part of your life.
See you at the J!

THE RAT PACKWhen folks around the J talk about the Rat Pack, it’s a safe bet they’re not talking about Sinatra, Martin and Davis. More likely, they’re referencing the JCC’s own Rat Pack, 15 men, from their 50s to 80s, who have been exercising together for over 20 years.
“The first rule of the group is that there are no rules,” says Robert Gerstein, a founding member. “It’s casual, everyone enjoys themselves.”
But don’t let the relaxed vibe fool you. Rat Pack members are committed to their Monday, Wednesday and Friday workouts. “Working out together makes the time go quicker,” Robert points out. “There are jokes, and conversation. We share news about our families. When someone is injured, we visit him.”
“The camaraderie is wonderful,” says Arnie Honkofsky. “It’s a huge part of my retirement.”
Neither “Ratpacker” can imagine meeting anywhere but the J. “It’s hamish, you know?” says Robert. “You feel like you’re home.”

New for Summer 2016Summer 2016 is going to be an exciting new experience for many of our J Campers. Our community will see the debut of our new outdoor J Day camp at the Rosenbloom Owings Mills J and the creation of J Adventures at Milldale on the Pearlstone Campus along with the expansion of Habimah Arts Camp.
Our camp staff is hard at work gearing up for another amazing summer built on a foundation of Jewish values and providing a fun, engaging experience that is welcoming to all.
J Adventures at MilldaleFor decades, Camp Milldale has been the inspiration for experiences and memories that span generations. To further our commitment of providing a nurturing and immersive environment in which our campers can explore, learn, and have fun, we are integrating Milldale’s outdoor offerings into several of our camp programs. Beginning this summer, it will no longer operate as a stand-alone camp and instead will be transformed into J Adventures at Milldale on the Pearlstone Campus enabling it to become an off-site day trip destination for many more J campers. Children from J Day, Habimah, Noah’s Ark Next, Maccabi Sports, and Koolanu camps will all get toexperience many of Milldale’s greatest attributes including the ropes course and zip line, boating on the lake, and participating in farming, nature and cooking activities – all in partnership with the Pearlstone Center.
J CAMPS - LEARN. LAUGH. LIVE UP.
“Your children are what is most important to us.”
NEW J Day CampHeadquartered in shaded structures on our outdoor fields in Owings Mills, our new J Day Camp will fill your camper’s day with nature, archery, swim lessons, pioneering, singing, art and more. “Our goal is to ensure that our campers end their days with a sense of satisfaction and pride in all their accomplishments,” says director, Emily Peisach-Stern. Emily is a familiar face at the J. Many of our families know her asthe director of Kids Center, our after-school program, and as theformer director of our Noah’s Ark preschool camp. In addition to participating in weekly trips to J Adventures at Milldale, J Daycampers will benefit from daily Jewish life programming, Israeli culture activities and a variety of fun electives.
Habimah Arts ExpandsIntroduced in 2014, our Habimah Arts Camp has been a runaway success. This year we have decided to expand from a primarily performing arts focus to include more visual arts as well. Now campers can also opt to try painting, drawing, ceramics, woodworking and more. In addition, to meet demand, we will now be offering four, two-week sessions. Each session will offer the thrill of performing and creating, driven by passion, dedication, and a whole lot of fun!
“No matter which J Camp you choose this summer we want you to know that your children are what is most important to us” says Susan Sherr-Seitz, Vice President of
Program and Innovation. “We are focused on providing the best and most engaging camp experience utilizing our state-of-the-art facilities, our beautiful, outdoor camp location, and our professionally trained staff.”

YO U R F I R S T S TO P I N JEWISH BALTIMORE
Meet Lara NicolsonBorn and raised in South Africa, Lara who moved to Baltimore with her husband 10 years ago, knows what it’s like to be a newcomer to Charm City’s close-knitJewish community. After her two children were born, Lara’s first point of entry to the Jewish community was the Rosenbloom JCC.
“I found the JCC so welcoming, and my children and I spent somuch time there,” she says. As the new Shalom Baltimore andInterfaith Engagement Director, Lara, whose previous Jewish communal experience includes positions at the Center for Jewish Education, the Associated’s Center for Community Engagement and Leadership, and Acharai, will be making other newcomers feel welcome.
Shalom Baltimore was conceived in response to the 1999 Baltimore Jewish Community Study’s findings that 50 percent of Baltimore’s Jewish residents were not native Baltimoreans and felt disconnected from the organized Jewish community. A later study revealed that interfaith families were also seeking a welcoming connection to the Baltimore Jewish community.
In 2013, The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore and the JCC launched a task force to address these issues. They decided to move Shalom Baltimore to the JCC and hire a full-time professional to focus on interfaith outreach.
“The Task Force’s research, has born out what we always suspected that the JCC is already seen as a natural gateway into Baltimore’s Jewish community,” says JCC President, Barak Hermann.
“Now that Lara has come aboard, and Shalom Baltimore has found a new home at the JCC, we believe that newcomers, including interfaith couples and families, will feel part of the Jewish community’s mishpacha almost as soon as they step through our doors.”
That was the experience that Holly Gainsboro had when she made contact with Shalom Baltimore. Gainsboro, who moved to Harbor East from Charlotte, N.C. was determined to become involved in her new community right away. The weekend after she arrived, Gainsboro ventured out to the JCC’s annual block party where she learned about Shalom Baltimore. “I signed up right away and was connected with volunteer Ilene Cohen. Ilene was wonderful. She gave me a whole packet of material and introduced me to all the opportunities that exist in the community. Then I met Janet Livingston and she told me about Chapter II, and the Jewish Women’s Giving Circle. I have found people to be so incredibly kind, warm and welcoming. Shalom Baltimore is a great program and a great vehicle for getting connected.”
Lara agrees that her role is to be a gateway (or concierge) and ensure that newcomers and interfaith families, like hers, find support, programs, resources, and their place in the community.
New to Baltimore? Lara wants to meet you! You can reach her at 410.559.3532 or email [email protected] and say, ‘Shalom.’

OUR STAR STAFFMeet the women who are shining bright at Park Heights. There’s nothing like receiving acknowledgment for a job well done. That’s the idea behind the JCC’s Staff Star program. Each month, we select several employees who go above and beyond the call of duty. JCC Star are outstanding performers who care about and are always willing to assist members and colleagues. They take pride in their jobs and in the JCC, consistently represent the JCC’s mission and provide excellent customer service.
Staff Star are nominated by their peers as well as by JCC members, who can nominate them by using the Kvetch and Kvell cards in our lobbies. Winners are recognized at our quarterly all-staff meetings and receive a gift and an award certificate.
Here’s the lowdown on some of our latest winners:
Yocheved Glaser works at J Play, the babysitting room inPark Heights. According to her supervisor, Ahuva Radzyner, Yocheved “not only keeps the children safe and happy, but she has gone above and beyond her duties by adding an educationalcomponent to the J Play program.” JCC mom, Sima Holland couldn’t agree more. “She’s amazing!” says Sima. “Yocheved is so loving and calm. She makes the babysitting room like a real classroom. Yocheved deserves to be recognized!”
Paula Siskind works with the JCC Camps and the aftercare programs. Her supervisor, Merav Levine says Paula is a STAR because of her strong work ethic and extraordinary devotion to campers, JCC members and colleagues. “Paula is always willing to lend a helping hand to everyone! She is beyond dedicated, working into the night preparing projects for her campers. She instills [in them] the idea that everyone is an artist.”
JCC members with young children may think of Shayna Gruner as the “mayor” of J Town, the Park Heights JCC’s new indoor play-space. “Shayna’s smile welcomes hundreds of people to J Town on a weekly basis,” says Sharon Seigel. In addition to her work inJ Town, Shayna works with children in the J’s School’s Out program and subs for teachers in the Early Childhood Center. “Shayna distinguishes herself by her efforts to provide creative programming and off the charts customer service,” adds Merav.
Mazel tov to all or our Stars!

Rhona Simon looks back six years ago to a day that sparked an ongoing volunteer commitment in her life.
She and her husband had signed up for Jewish Volunteer Connection’s Annual Community Mitzvah Day. Itwas Christmas and the couple were preparing and serving dinner at the Ronald McDonald House to those families in Baltimore whose children were recovering from surgery.
“It was such a heartwarming experience,” she recalls, “that we choose to make this a regular commitment.”
Soon she would meet a family that would become close friends.
“I remember noticing a father who was Jewish. I decided to strike up a conversation and learned that his son was in Baltimore for limb lengthening surgery. Jared (the father) grew up in Harford County but was now living in Hawaii. We played a little Jewish geography, later invited them to our house for dinner and kept in touch after they went home.”
“We soon learned that Jared’s son was a huge Ravens fan,” she adds. “So when he returned to Baltimore for another surgery, my son’s friend, who worked for the Ravens, got them into training camp.”
Simon also volunteers through JVC’s Bookworms project, reading to first graders at Fallstaff Elementary Middle School. A former first grade teacher, she enjoys sharing her love of reading and listening to their stories.
Lending an ear… providing a meal… dropping off a birthday gift. These simple gestures have the power to transform, to dispel loneliness, to demonstrate that someone cares. For many in our community —seniors, children, the sick— just an hour a week from a volunteer can have an immeasurable impact.
A former special education teacher, Miriam Rittberg has been volunteering for CHAI’s Northwest Neighbors Connecting (NNC) for the past two years. As part of NNC’s Caring Committee, she and the committee members send out cards to those who are ill and celebrating simchas and even drop off gift baskets to members who have birthdays, when possible.
At the same time, she also volunteers with NNC, connecting regularly with an older person who can’t get out. She calls her weekly to check up and the two share stories. When Miriam learned that the daughter was coming to town, she dropped off a frozen gefilte fish because she knew this daughter loves gefilte fish.
“It’s easy for older people to feel isolated,” Miriam says. “Through NNC we reach out to them to let them know we are here.”
NNC, an innovative “village” model ensures that seniors can remain comfortably in their home communities as long as possible. Volunteers play a pivotal role, providing rides to doctor’s appointments, checking in and providing basic household fixes. The program is part of CHAI, an agency of The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore.
“When you volunteer,” she says. “You become involved with the family and their personal story. You don’t know how much it means to them to be able to share with someone.”
Ashley Pressman, executive director of JVC points to a quote from Martin Luther King. Dr. King, she notes, once remarked, “You can’t defeat darkness with darkness. Only light can do that.”
“Volunteers,” she adds, “help spread light by building on people’s strengths and supporting them in their challenges.”
The Associated offers numerous volunteer opportunities. Learn how you can create the perfect one through JVC at jvcbaltimore.org. To volunteerat NNC, call 410.662.6620.

Jewish communities across the country have increasingly recognized the importance of inspiring teens to connect with their Jewishidentity during this formative life phase. After a year-long planning process, The Associated: Jewish Community Federationof Baltimore was awarded a five-year matching grant by the Jim Joseph Foundation to create a community-wide initiative that will expand and deepen teen education and engagement in Baltimore.
In full partnership with the JCC, The Associated will establish the new Center for Teen Engagement, housed at the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC. The Center, now in the planning stages, will maximize the involvement of Jewish teens in Jewish communal life using a three-pronged approach that includes programs for Jewish teens, teen professionals, and lay leaders.
The Teen Social Innovation Internship is a one-year, high quality Jewish experience that will result in peer-to-peer sustainable innovative responses to social issues. Through the internship, participating teens will gain the tools necessary to develop and implement groundbreaking solutions to social problems. The internship includes a Global Jewish Experience, that will connect Baltimore’s Jewish teens with teens in Baltimore’s sister cities of Ashkelon and Odessa.
The Jewish Teen Professionals Fellowship is a competitive continuing education program for those who work with Jewish teens. Fellows will learn how to deepen teens’ understanding and appreciation of core Jewish values, concepts and practices and how to integrate these ideas into conversations and relevant programming with the teens they serve. The fellowship will also teach professionals to use programming as a vehicle for developing relationships and meaningful experiences with and among teens. Fellows will gain an expanded understanding of and sensitivity to the health and safety issues faced by today’s teens.
CENTER FOR TEEN ENGAGEMENTComing Soon
The Lay Advocates Program will develop lay advocates for teen Jewish education and engagement by training volunteer leaders serving on boards of Jewish organizations to advocate onbehalf of the community’s Jewish teens. The program should result in greater resources being devoted to teen education and engagement, greater lay-professional partnerships supporting teen programmingand the emergence of new roles for teens in the Baltimore community.
Susan Sherr-Seitz, the JCC’s senior vice president of program andinnovation will supervise the Center’s staff. Susan stresses that the initiative’s strength will come from the ideas and energy of teens, professionals and lay leaders from across Baltimore’s Jewish community.
“The Center for Teen Engagement will showcase how much impact we can have through collaboration and partnership,” says Sherr-Seitz.
“This initiative will expand and deepen how we’re reaching teensand inspiring them to connect to their Jewish identity. This is truly acommunity initiative which will transcend organizational boundaries.”
If your high school-aged teen is interested in receiving more information about our Teen Social Innovation Internship, please contact Susan Sherr-Seitz at [email protected].
