Safety at work

General ruleBefore starting your work, inform yourself about potential hazards and safety rules at your working area by contacting

the line manager or your local contact person.

Access to the experimental areas at PSI can be denied,

when the safety instructions are not followed.

Electrical Installations

• Pay attention and be careful when working with electrical installations.

• Switch off power and/or disconnect power cable before doing maintenance work. Please contact your local adviser/ supervisor or staff from the Division for Infrastructure and Electrotechnics for questions.

• Special knowledge is required for working on low-, medium-, and high-voltage devices. Please delegate such work to the respective experts.

• Before starting to work at electrical installations, please read AW 93-05-02.

Laser Safety

Important: Laser classes 3B and 4: special safety requirements are mandatory (protecting glasses, warning lights, signs, access control…)

Laser classes 1 and 2: warning sign and laser declaration.

Standards: PSI: AW-96-08-20e

Technical expert: Thomas Lippert 4076

19.04.23PSI, Seite 11

Biological hazardsImportant: Experiments with genetically modified, pathogenic, and alien organisms

need to be registered in Switzerland.

PSI can only handle organisms of biosafety levels 1 and 2.

Experiments with animals need a permission.

Standards: PSI: AW-96-14-02e

The federal law “Ordinance on Handling Organisms in Contained Systems” rules the handling of biological material in Switzerland.

Important Lifting and attaching loads is dangerous and requires special training!

Cranes < 1000 kg rated capacity can be operated by instructed personal. Without the corresponding official instruction, any crane operation is strictly forbidden.

Operating cranes with a capacity > 1000 kg needs a special crane driving license. Please contact a corresponding service person.

Technical expert: David Reinhard 5448

Using cranes

Important: Do not store any inflammable material.

Keep the escape routes clear.

Generally, comply with existing regulations.

ChemicalsImportant: Chemicals hold a risk to health and environment: Inform yourself about

hazards, rules, procedures and contact advisers. Consult the relevant Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

Use Personal protective equipment

Standard: PSI: AW-96-08-09e

PSI Intranet: Chemical Safety at PSI

Drinking and eating is strictly prohibited in labs

Radiation Safety

Important: During your stay at PSI you might be exposed to ionizing radiation.

These places are located within controlled areas that are explicitly labeled.

Within the controlled areas special guidelines must be complied with by everybody, in particular, those displayed at the entrances to zones must be followed.

Standards: PSI: AW-23-96-13

In case of questions please contact the staff from the PSI Division for radiation safety and

security (ASI). Contact numbers are displayed at the controlled areas.

19.04.23PSI, Seite 36

Please bring only the really necessary items into the controlled area.

Danger of contamination or activation

Tools and other materials

19.04.23PSI, Seite 37

Before removing tools or other items from the controlled area call a staff member from the Operational Radiation Protection Section (Betriebsstrahlenschutz) for the

mandatory control measurement

Tools and other materials

19.04.23PSI, Seite 38

Leaving a controlled area

When leaving a controlled area you must make use of the monitors to check for potential contamination.

19.04.23PSI, Seite 39

QuestionWhat is needed before taking out items from a controlled area?

You call a staff member from the Operational Radiation Protection Section (Betriebsstrahlenschutz) to carry out the control measurement.

If no activation or contamination is expected you are free to remove the material without further check.

You carry out the control measurement by yourself and take the items along.
