INTRODUCTION

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

MASTER PLAN DESIGN CONCEPT / RECOMMENDATIONS

The Kohl Center, which opened in 1998, is the home of the University’s men’s basketball and ice hockey teams, and the Women’s basketball team. It also housed the University’s women’s ice hockey team through 2012, a er which they moved into the adjacent LaBahn Arena. Sea ng capacity is variable, as the center can be rearranged to accommodate a basketball court, a hockey rink, or a concert. The maximum capacity is 17,230 in its basketball confi gura on, and 15,359 for ice hockey. The center has three levels, with the fl oor holding about 7,500 people, and the two upper balconies about 4,500 each. It is the second largest indoor venue in Wisconsin and the largest outside Milwaukee.

The arena has become excep onally diffi cult for opposing teams to play in, especially in Men’s basketball, helped in part by the student sec on known as the Grateful Red. The arena garnered a en on when the Men’s basketball team compiled a 38-game home winning streak, which came to end during the 2004–2005 season at the hands of the No. 1 ranked University of Illinois. The Kohl Center boasts the na on’s highest single game a endance in women’s college hockey in history. The venue is one of the toughest places to compete for visi ng teams.

Prior to the Kohl Center, the basketball teams played at the Wisconsin Field House, while ice hockey was played at the Dane County Memorial Coliseum (aka, the Alliant Energy Center). The design of the Kohl Center is modeled somewhat a er that of the Field House with can levered balconies instead of a setback style. This was done to in midate opponents and bring all fans close to the ac on [3].

Over the past 10 years, the Kohl Center has become a hub of opera ons for the Athle c Department and student athletes within the Basketball and Hockey programs. To fully serve the administra on and student athletes, addi onal space is necessary. Sports Performance, Academic Services, Dining, and administra on suites are vastly undersized to func on appropriately. The expansion of these areas allows other spaces within the exis ng arena to be reconfi gured and expanded as well as providing greater func onality.

The available land between the exis ng arena and railway right-of-way off the southeast corner is the most suitable loca on for the addi on and allows for an athlete-centric focus on the south side of the building.

FACILITY ASSESSMENT

The building was built in 1997 with minor remodeling since. The building is a precast concrete frame, fl oors and wall panels. The building is fi ve levels with mechanical and electrical rooms on the lower level. Overall the building is in good condi on, but its con nued age will bring infrastructure, maintenance and equip-ment replacements.

The main cost items are: domes c heater replacement, Direct Digital Control upgrade, pump replacements, ice chiller compressor maintenance, movable sea ng replacement, new videoboard, fi re alarm system re-placement and ligh ng upgrades. A total of $12 million of repairs is iden fi ed in the report.

GAME DAY OPERATIONS

BASKETBALL & ICE HOCKEY

Game day events bring a large number of fans to the University of Wisconsin campus. It’s of cri cal im-portance that the Athle c Department and the greater University manage these events for proper safety, effi cient opera ons, high quality and memorable experiences.

Basketball and Ice Hockey events are exci ng for both the University campus and the larger Wisconsin community bringing energy to the en re city of Madison. Effi cient vehicular and pedestrian traffi c pa erns are cri cal for a high-quality event. The railway line immediately to the south pushes primary access to the north and relies on W. Washington Avenue and N. Park Street to make these connec ons. Addi onal parking to the east planned within the Campus Master Plan will assist the parking demands for this venue

Future improvements to enhance game day experience should integrate the following:

• South connec on via pedestrian bridge over the rail line to balance entry gate opportuni es

• Increased parking opportuni es for premium cket holders

• Mixed-use development opportuni es in the area to aid in pre and post game gatherings and minimized conges on

• Expanded Club Lounge sea ng opportuni es

GOAL SOUTHEAST CORNERExpand the Kohl Center to further enhance its capabili es as a HUB for student-athlete development. Pro-vide adequate square footage to increase off erings from sports performance, sports medicine, dining, ac-ademic services, and coaching offi ces. Expand the Kohl Center to further enhance its capabili es as a HUB for student-athlete development. Provide adequate square footage to increase off erings from sports per-formance, sports medicine, dining, academic services, and coaching offi ces.

The Kohl Center lawn and north façade are a unique feature in the fabric of the UW-Madison campus. Pre-serving the integrity of these features is cri cal, so expansion of the Kohl Center must occur on the south half of the arena. The southwest currently func ons as the loading and service space for the facility and must be maintained. The southeast corner of the Kohl Center is only used for smoking pa o and egress out of the facility.

SOUTHEAST ADDITION PROPOSAL

EXPANSION SIZE PROPOSED PROGRAM

Filling in the southeast por on of the Kohl Center is achieved by extending the west façade and running parallel with the neighboring railway tracks. This resultant space has a footprint of 13,300 gross square-feet. Expanding each of the three levels of the arena (Service, Main Concourse, and Upper Concourse) would allow for a 40,000 gross square-foot expansion of the arena.

Along the south edge of the arena, the Service Level is par ally below grade. This limits the amount of daylight and visibility into these spaces.

The addi onal 40,000 gross square-feet of space would allow the Kohl Center to establish itself as a second HUB for student-athlete ac vity. The new addi on could create:• 11,000 GSF for Sports Performance

• 5,500 GSF for Sports Medicine

• 10,000 GSF of Academic Support Spaces

• 2,300 GSF of Dining and Nutri onal Services

• 12,300 GSF of Athle c Offi ce Space to serve Men’s Hockey, Women’s Basketball and Men’s Basketball

UPPER CONCOURSE NORTH CLUB SPACE

NORTH CLUB SPACEPremium spaces with visual access into the arena are limited at the Kohl Center. Renova ng the exis ng concessions at the north end of the Upper Concourse would create a premium club space with sea ng directly into the arena bowl.

The renova on would create approximately 5,000 GSF of premium space that could split between dedicated sea ng and club ameni es. The image to the le shows 2,000 GSF dedicated to premium sea ng with a 3,000 GSF club space behind.
