Deschutes County Providing Community Grants Deschutes County is providing community grants between $10,000 and $30,000 tonon-profitorganizationsthatwillfundprogramsconsistentwiththeprioritiesoftheCounty.Applications are due at 3:00pm on Friday, April 29. TheCountyopensthecommunitygrantapplicationprocessonceayeartoassistnon-profitorganizationsinaddressingemergencyservices,abuseandneglect,healthservicesandotherareasofneed.Thegrantsarereservedforprojectsaddressingneedsinmultipleareasandaffectingabroadscopeofthecommunity. Generally,communitygrantapplicationprojectsarenotlimitedto,butshouldfitwithinoneofthefollowinginterestareas:1.Providingemergencyfood,clothingandsheltertothosewhowouldotherwisegowithouttheseessentials.2.Protectionforabusedand/orneglectedindividualswholackresourcestootherwiseobtainsuchprotection.3.Healthcare,mentalhealthcareandaddictionstreatmentforindividualswholackresourcestootherwiseobtainsuchcare.4.Juvenilecrimepreventionprogramsforat-riskyouth.5.Otheressentialservicestounderservedandindigentpopulations,especiallychildrenandseniors. Second Case Of Meningococcal Disease Confirmed In Deschutes Resident OregonStatePublicHealthLaboratoryhasconfirmedasecondcaseofMeningococcalDiseaseinaDeschutesCountyresident.ThisisthefourthconfirmedcaseofMeningococcalDiseaseinCentralOregonwithinonemonth.Thiscaseisthefirst“serotypeY”Meningococcalstrain,whichmeansthereisnoconnectiontothepreviousthreecases,whichwere“serotypesBandC”strains.Both“serotypeCandY”Meningococcalstrainsarevaccine-preventable. Close contacts of the individual have been contacted and preventive antibiotics havebeen recommended to decrease the chance of developing the illness and transmission toothers. Meningococcaldiseaseiscausedbybacteriathatarepresentinthethroatornasalpassagesof about 15 percent of the general population. Consistent symptoms of meningococcalmeningitisarehighfever,headacheandstiffneck.Itisnothighlycontagious.Transmissionofthemeningococcalbacteriaisthroughdirectcontactwithsalivaorrespiratorysecretionsoftheinfectedperson.Inmostinstances,thebacteriadonotcauseapersontobecomeill.Insomerarecases,illnesscanberapidandsevere. Itishighlyrecommendedthatallpersons11to18yearsofagereceiveMeningococcalvaccine, which prevents disease in four of the serotypes (A, C,Y, andW-135). In addition,individuals 2 to 55 years of age should receive the vaccine if they are at higher risk forMeningococcaldisease.Highriskgroupsinclude:Collegestudentslivingindormitoriesandmilitaryrecruits(livingincloseproximitytoothers);Peoplewhohavecertainimmunesystemdisorderscalled“terminalcomplementcomponentdeficiencies”;Peoplewhohavenospleenor who have spleens affected by sickle cell disease; Lab personnel who are routinely workwithspecimensresultingfromMeningococcalDisease;TravelerstoorresidentsofcountriesinwhichMeningococcalDiseaseiscommon. Meningococcal vaccine is available through many medical providers, pharmacies,or through your local health department. Back problems are a common complaint for spring gardeners. To prevent them, remember to lift heavier objects primarily with your thigh muscles, not your back muscles! Never twist at your waist while carrying a heavy load when you can shift your body in the direction of your work.
Don’t bend, kneel. Instead of bending at the waist, kneel on one or both knees. (Knee pads are a great help with this).
Wheels are good! Save steps by rolling a garbage can to the clean-up area and fill it as you work. Use your wheelbarrow or wagon.
Avoid reaching into the trunk of your car or bed of the truck to lift heavy bags of fertilizer or compost. Try pulling the load closer to you before you lift.
Careful with ladders. One of the most common ways of injury at home involves ladders. Use one that is tall enough and make sure it sits on level, stable ground.
And, lastly, don’t try to do it all in one day. Unless you are in great shape, you will be surprised at the muscle soreness you may develop after a long winter of limited activity.
And, of course, always get your spinal tune-up after any heavy exertion. Your body is the tool you use every day. Keep it sharp!

Baby Chicks May Pose Salmonella Threat: Proper Handling Advised AcaseofSalmonellainaDeschutesCountyresidenthasbeenlinkedtobabychicksbytheOregonStatePublicHealthLaboratory.AsspringandtheEasterholidayapproach,localandStatePublicHealthofficialsareremindingeveryonethatchickhandlingisaverycommonsourceofSalmonella. ManychickscarrySalmonellabacteriaintheirintestinaltractandcanshedthesebacteriaintheirfeces.Salmonellabacteriamaynotcauseanyillnessinchicks,butcancauseseriousillnessinpeopleespeciallychildrenandimmune-compromisedpeople. Salmonella bacteria are easily spread from chicks to humans. Humans may becomeinfected when handling chicks or when handling contaminated items with fecal materials.For Salmonella bacteria to spread from chicks to humans, the bacteria must be ingested.Therefore,whenhandlingchickspeopleandespeciallychildrenshouldwashtheirhandswellandfrequentlywithsoapandwater. MostSalmonellainfectionsinhumansresultinamild,self-limitingillnesscharacterizedbydiarrhea,fever,andabdominalcramps.However,theinfectioncanspreadtothebloodstream,bonemarrowornervoussystem,leadingtosevereandsometimesfatal,illness.Suchsevereinfections are more likely to occur in infants and in individuals whose immune system iscompromised. Fortunately the spread of Salmonella bacteria from chicks to humans can be easilyprevented by using the following routine precautions: Always wash your hands with hot,soapywaterafterhandlingchicks,chickcagesandequipment,andthestoolofchicks;Keepchickspennedinoutbuildingsoroutside.Alwayswashyourhandsaftercomingintocontactwithanyareawherechicksarekept;Donoteat,drink,orsmokewhilehandlingchicks,chickcages,orchickequipment.Donotkisschicksorsharefoodordrinkwiththem;Childrenlessthan five years old should avoid contact with chicks. Children should be supervised whentheyarehandlingchickstoensurethattheydonotplacetheirhands,orobjectsthatachickhascontacted,intheirmouths.Chicksshouldnotbekeptinchildcarecenters;Personswithcompromised immune systems should avoid contact with chicks; Follow instructions fromyour veterinarian concerning proper diet and environment for your chicks. Some Medications Can Affect Potassium LevelsHypokalemia (low potassium) is a reduced amount of this mineral in the blood. Certain medications that are prescribed for high blood pressure may cause a loss of potassium as a side effect. Thiazide diuretics (such as hydrochlorothiazide and chlorthalidone) and loop diuretics (such as furosemide and torsemide) may cause this effect. However, potassium sparing diuretics, such as spironolactone and triamterene, could cause the opposite effect, or an increase in potassium, known as hyperkalemia (high potassium). AIthough a small reduction in the amount of potassium will not typically cause symptoms, abnormal heart rhythm, muscle spasms, or paralysis may result if the reduction in potassium is too large or uncontrolled. Fatigue or constipation could also occur with hypokalemia.
Hypokalemia can be prevented by increasing the intake of certain fruits and vegetables rich in potassium (e.g. broccoli and sweet potatoes). The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) eating plan is recommended for persons with hypertension. Potassium supplements (Micro-K, Klor-Con) are also available for the prevention of hypokalemia. Other medication types that may lead to hyperkalemia include the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin-receptor blocker (ARB) medications. $17.99
