Medications For High Altitude SicknessHigh-altitude illness (HAl) sometimes occurs during a trip to high altitudes. There are several different types of HAl. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is the most common form, and can occur if ascent occurs too quickly. Approximately 50% of persons who normally reside at low altitudes and then travel above 10,000 feet may be affected. Persons who have experienced HAl in the past are at an increased risk of being affected in future trips to high altitudes. The cause of HAl involves lowered air pressure and decreased oxygen concentration at higher altitudes. Signs and symptoms include headache, lightheadedness, decreased appetite, and nausea. Typically symptoms begin within 6 to 12 hours after arriving at an altitude of 8,000 feet or more.
A slow ascent to higher altitudes is recommended for prevention of AMS. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) available over-the-counter, such as aspirin and naproxen (Aleve), may be taken to prevent a headache from occurring during a rapid ascent, or to treat a headache upon first appearance of symptoms. For nausea or vomiting, promethazine (Phenergan) and ondansetron (Zofran) are available with a prescription. Acetazolamide (Diamox) may be prescribed to prevent or treat AMS symptoms and to improve breathing at high altitudes.

first cast, and as we are anticipating that opening weekend, we can take inventory on our boat to make sure we have our safety equipment up-to-date and in good condition.
If we go on the Columbia or any of the coastal waters, we need an emergency flare on board in order to be legal, and another thing we all need to be legal on the water with our gas powered boats is a fully charged fire extinguisher.
Checking the safety equipment on your boat before you go to the annual boat inspection is simple to do and will save you time and trouble if an actual emergency occurs and you need any of the emergency tools.
Check your horn to make sure it is in good working order. If you don’t have a horn, be sure to keep a good, loud whistle handy, and on board, for all the non-motorized crafts. Having a whistle on your safety vest is a great place to keep it; if you need it, you don’t have time to look for it, and by wearing your vest you have it within easy access.
The website www.boatoregon.com is the Oregon State Marine Board site, and you can double check all the safety regs there so you are ready for the annual boat inspection when the time comes.

BANCORP INSURANCE AGENCY • REX & TAMMY LESUEURBancorp Insurance Agency was opened in 1979 by Bill and Mary Rose Dobson. Rex and Tammy purchased the agency in August of 1990. They moved to their present location at 51477 Hwy. 97, in the Plaza near Napa Auto Parts, and next door to La Pine Tax Service. How did you happen to come to the La Pine area? “We were in New York City in the ‘90s and not liking it! Our parents were in the Klamath Falls and Portland areas. We decided we wanted to be north of Redding and west of the Rockies. Our training was in insurance; there was a recession at the time and no jobs in insurance. When the Bancorp Agency in La Pine became available, we bought it and the rest is history.” What changes have you seen in the business since you began? “The insurance industry is extremely dependent on technology. We have a “State-of-the-Art” agency and utilize the most current management systems that are available. A lot of folks don’t know that we opened a second location in Oakridge in 1996, as well.”Rex, who are some of the main players in your organization? “We have a wonderful staff! Karen has been with us 14 years, Greta 13 years, Lori 11 years and Pam 8 years. Beth and Linda are somewhat newer to the agency, but a very important part of the organization. Glenn, in Oakridge, has been with us 14 years. We are really proud of our staff. Tammy is our marketing and management systems expert. And myself, Rex.”What is the growth potential for your organization? “It is unlimited! We have grown by 4 times in the last decade. We have good marketing systems in place and good staff. We specialize in commercial insurance, but continue to handle all types. We have streamlined our operations and are very systemized in the way we do things.”What has been one of your organizations greatest challenges? “The insurance business is very competitive. Continuing to maintain good customer service is diffi cult. We are always looking for new business and ways to make the phone ring.”Tell us a little about your background: “Tammy and I were married in 1978 and put each other through college. We went to the College of Insurance in New York. I have a Bachelors in Business as well as a Degree in Insurance. I was a Re-Insurance Manager prior to buying Bancorp Insurance in La Pine.” How else are you involved in the community? “I have been instrumental in hosting the Cycle Oregon Events, three times, in La Pine. I have been on the La Pine Industrial Group Board for 14 years. We have been La Pine Chamber Members since the beginning, serving as President of the Board in 1992. We were also big supporters and involved in the Political Action Committee to establish a successful tax base for La Pine Parks and Recreation District.” What advice would you give other community leaders? “Put the plow on and go! And don’t get discouraged by minor setbacks, or over-excited by wins. Just keep on moving. Also remember to ADVERTISE!
