Boy Scouts Plan Holiday Tree Pickup and Recycling Boy Scout Troops 36 & 76 will be offering holiday tree pickup in the La Pine area on January 3rd. For pickup, please call 385-3971. Troop 36 & 76 will also be picking up holiday trees in the Sunriver area on January 3rd & 4th. Please call 385-3935. For a donation of $5 per tree, the Scouts will pick up holiday trees at curbside and recycle them for compost. Pickup will occur after 9:00am on the above dates. The Scouts ask that the donation be made by check payable to “Boy Scouts of America” and that it be placed in a water-tight plastic bag and affixed to the top of the tree with a rubber band. Wreaths, garlands and decorated trees will not be accepted. The annual fundraiser for the Boy Scouts helps fund the Troop’s many activities, including camping trips, summer camp and other outings, educational programs and community service activities. Healthy Start At Birthing UnitThe Deschutes County Health Department’s Maternal Child Health
division would like to recognize St. Charles Medical Center (Cascade Health Care Community) for generously and temporarily hosting the County’s Healthy Start Prenatal program at the Family Birthing Unit. Healthy Start has temporarily been relocated to St. Charles due to the temporary closure of the Deschutes County Human Services Building on Courtney Drive in Bend. The staff at the Family Birthing Unit have been very fl exible and generous to County Healthy Start staff and clients. Healthy Start services will be located at the Unit until further notice. The Healthy Start project is a true refl ection of the community’s commitment to pregnant women and their unborn children. For 20 years, East Cascade Women’s Group was the medical provider for the County’s Healthy Start program. La Pine Park & Recreation DistrictReceives A Christmas Wish From The Central Oregon Association Of Realtors
La Pine Park & Recreation District received a $1,500 donation from CENTRAL OREGON ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS on December 22, 2008. This donation marks the fi rst that will be paid toward the 2009 insurance premium. The district expects to receive that $6,000 bill next week. The following organizations have made donations to assist paying the past due 2008 premiums of $11,039: S.C.O.O.T.R. - South Central Oregon Outreach Toy Run, Inc. High Lakes Car Club David Hazeltine “In Memory of Caroline Hazeltine” Little Deschutes Grange #939 La Pine Volunteer FireFighters and Fire Fighters Union BANCORP Insurance Living Word Church Rebound Physical Therapy La Pine Water District La Pine Sewer District ...and all of the local families who donated toward the insurance premium!In other LPRD Matters: The Board of County Commissioners recently granted $8,637 to assist with building repairs at the WSPB to bring it up to code. A total of $13,637 was granted to LPRD by Deschutes County in 2008 for this project. The district is still running short by $8000 to complete the project. An alarm system needs to be installed to meet county standards. Currently the White School Park Building is closed for the winter months due to the high cost of heating.
Bars, Bingo Halls And Bowling Centers To Be Smokefree At Midnight December 31 Starting at midnight on New Year’s Eve, Oregon’s Smokefree Workplace Law will protect nearly every Oregon employee from the health risks of secondhand smoke. The new law covers bars, bingo halls and bowling centers, as well as 75 percent of hotel and motel sleeping rooms and all employee break rooms. Oregonians strongly support the new law, passed by the 2007 Oregon Legislature. Surveys show that 90 percent of Oregonians, including 76 percent of smokers, prefer smokefree indoor workplaces, and 86 percent say employees should be protected from secondhand smoke. Many businesses support the new law as well. A recent survey showed that 66 percent of businesses aff ected by the new law are already smokefree. Many other businesses have been preparing for the change all year, including some that opted to go smokefree in advance of the law and others that are ready to celebrate as the law takes eff ect. Gail Moulton, manager of Pine Tavern in downtown Bend, went smokefree after a renovation 10 years ago. “When we fi rst decided to go smokefree 10 years ago, we were fearful we’d lose our loyal, smoking customers. I can tell you now that it was the best business decision we’ve ever made. At fi rst, smoking patrons stayed away but they came back shortly thereafter. Overall, our guests and our employees are extremely happy with our smokefree policy.”Tobacco prevention in Oregon Tobacco takes a tremendous toll on Oregon. Tobacco contributed to 22 percent of all deaths in the state in 2005, making Oregon residents four times more likely to die from tobacco-related causes than from motor vehicle accidents, suicide, AIDS and homicide combined. Employees and the public can help ensure that the law is followed by reporting violations, beginning January 1, by calling 1-866-621-6107 or completing an online complaint form at www.healthoregon.org/smokefree . New Orthodontic Clinic Opens In Bend! A new Bend orthodontic clinic with a unique payment plan is now open. Smile! Central Oregon will allow patients to pay up to half of their bills through community service. Organized and run by Dr. Juliana Panchura, an orthodontist at The Brace Place, the clinic will credit patients $10 for every hour they or their family members volunteer at an approved nonprofi t organization. The clinic has partnered with several community organizations and will work with patients who already volunteer at a nonprofi t of their choice. Dr. Panchura said she wanted to organize the clinic to help make orthodontic services more aff ordable for families and to support public service projects. The clinic will be open one Friday a month. COCC Abe/College Prep Registration Starts SoonCentral Oregon Community College’s Adult Basic Education/College Preparation program will accept registrations for winter term the week of January
5 in the classrooms for all but Bend English Language Learning students. New Bend ELL students will register at 6pm on January 5 in Grandview 110 on the COCC campus and January 6 at the Grace Baptist Church at 566 NE Clay Ave. Students can register in GED/College Preparation classes in La Pine and Warm Springs; and in GED/College Prep and ELL classes in Bend, Madras, Prineville, and Redmond. The Deschutes Public Library Presents...Fly Tying Demonstration and Workshop Get a jump start on fi shing season and learn how to tie fl ys at a workshop taught by Central Oregon Fly Fishers instructor Sherry Steel. This year’s event began Tuesday when 31 children from the Redmond and Sisters School Districts shopped at the Redmond Wal-Mart. On Wednesday, 52 children from the Bend La Pine School District participated and on Thursday, 28 children from the COPY program joined in on the fun. COPY is a Deschutes County Sheriff ’s Offi ce mentoring program for children with incarcerated parents. This year, 101 police offi cers representing every law enforcement agency in Deschutes County, shopped for over 500 family members! Many thanks go out to Family Access Network advocates, school resource offi cers and the COPY program for selecting children to participate. Terri Smith, a retired English teacher who moved to Bend 18 years ago, has found a passion for found objects with which to craft her one-of-a-kind dolls. The dolls have evolved over time according to the materials available to Terri. Old tools along with glass and handmade beads have become her medium of choice. The hunt for materials is part of the creative process and more than half of the fun, for she has found her sources between Bend and South Carolina. Terri has recently become involved in Art Station classes and has been encouraged to display her found object dolls in various venues. Amy Royce also from Bend works in encaustic or wax medium. Amy says her work is about finding identity in a rapidly shifting global landscape, to find support in or to fight gravity – what is beyond our control. My practice as an artist begins with these questions,” she says, “and my paintings are my expression of the ‘inner’ body. The waxy surface becomes skin, tissue, shapes of bone and sinew. Layers come and go and I like to see evidence of the process: marks, divots and scratches on the wax surface become clues. Texture for a ‘skin’ of experience is as individual as each of us. Scraping, pushing, pulling the wax around with heat and carving tools reveal the mystery and allure of the paint.” A reception will be held at the library on Sunday, January 3 from 2 to 4pm. Both artists will explain their artistic process in different mediums. The exhibit will be on display during regular library hours and visitors are welcome. Hot Spot Lures Ltd. are made in Victoria, BC, Canada and offer one of the most popular and time tested lures we are fortunate enough to be able to use on many of our local lakes here in Central Oregon, and the one that comes to mind the most, is one every avid fisherman needs to have in their tackle box known as the Apex Kokanee Killer. Granted this is a trolling lure, but once you try it you will not be able to go to the tackle section of any store and not look for one that will be the go to lure for the Kokanee fishing season.
We have found the pink and the orange colors to be really reliable and sometimes the day will vary and the colors will change partway through the day, so to have a choice of available colors is one way to keep the options open for the best lure to try.
Some of the problems folks have with a trolling lure are that they troll too fast for the fish they want to catch, for Kokanee you want to keep the speed to .08-1.8 mph, depending on the speed of the water, if moving, and the effect of the wind to aid in the trolling speed of the boat. Trolling too fast can definitely cut down on the success of the lure; the action just is not as good and the fish are just unable to respond like we want.
So, while Kokanee fishing may be something you are an old pro at or you just want to add it to the lineup of the fish you have scored, try the Apex Kokanee Killer this season and enjoy the fruits of your labors!
