Our annual campaign to ‘Keep The Wheels Turning’ on the Para Transit Care Coach will be kicking off in May. The “Yellow Envelope Mail-Out Keep the Wheels Turning Campaign” aims to raise dollars to ensure the Care Coach continues to provide this service to residents of Arnprior, the Township of McNab-Braeside, and areas of West Carleton including Fitzroy Harbour, Kinburn, Woodlawn, and Dunrobin. Since February 4th, 2008, over 12,000 trips have been provided to those citizens whose independence relies on the Care Coach. Last year our goal was 30 thousand. Thanks to the generosity of these communities, we exceeded the goal: $40,035.00. This year, with a slight increase in expenses, our goal is 32 thousand. To make a difference in the life of another is what drives Phyllis Doherty. She first joined the team at ABMSH September 4, 2012, but her volunteer portfolio is so much more.

Her first volunteering position was at the Victim/Witness Assistance Program for the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, at the court in Renfrew, in 2006. That was soon after moving to Arnprior and retiring in December 2005 from her full time job in Ottawa. Later she volunteered for the Garden Club and the Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club in Arnprior, and then with the front office as a volunteer receptionist with our agency. She also volunteers at the Arnprior Legion when called upon.

It wasn’t long before her dedication and interest in the agency were recognized. When an opening became available on the Board of Directors she was asked to join by Dennis Harrington, Executive Director. She did and now has three roles at Seniors at Home including Chair of the Development Committee.

“Being a volunteer gives me a sense of belonging to the community, it is a great way to meet people from all over Arnprior and the Township of McNab-Braeside. The staff and other volunteers are very welcoming and fun to be with. The work we do here is making a difference in the lives of so many people on a daily basis; you can’t help but feel fulfilled by playing some small part in making it possible,” states Phyllis.

She was born in Ottawa and grew up in Aylmer, went to University in Ottawa and then worked her whole career in Ottawa. “I never expected to

retire to Arnprior, but life has a way of surprising you when you least expect it”. As it happened, she would eventually marry someone she went to High school with and who grew up a few miles from her in Aylmer; Harry Hereford (we know him as golf pro and president of the Arnprior Legion). They attended some classes together in High School, first at St. Mark’s in Aylmer and then in St. Pat’s in Hull. They hung around at the ice rink with the same crowd, but never dated then. They re-connected at a High School reunion for St. Pat’s in 2004 and soon started dating. They married June 3, 2005. Together they share their lives with Harry’s son and two daughters who live in St. Louis and area, and Phyllis’s daughter who now lives in Yarmouth, N.S and as well are proud grandparents of two grandsons.

Phyllis’s background is in Psychology and Criminology. She first began working as a Psychologist’s Research Assistant right out of University and continued going to University part time to get a Masters Degree in Criminology. Along the way she worked for the Ministry of the Solicitor General doing research into violent crime and states she was lucky to be at the beginning of the Crime Prevention movement. Her last transition was to the Department of Justice where she worked in policy and program evaluation. As a baby boomer Phyllis believes her career was during the best of times for women, and for University graduates. It was a time when finding a job in your chosen field was not as difficult as it seems to be for today’s graduates. “Perhaps appreciating how lucky I was makes volunteering seem like a good way to spend retirement”, says Phyllis.

She enjoys reading, which makes being a member of The Book Worms book club a good fit. Yoga is

something she has enjoyed for over 30 years. Other things she has tried include photography, sewing, tennis, curling, knitting, crochet, needle work and bird watching. She has been lucky to have enjoyed bird watching in spectacular locations like Wales, England and Ireland, Cuba, Florida, Cayman Islands, Hawaii and the Caribbean Islands.

Phyllis states she is not a competitive person, nor is she particularly extroverted, but enjoys movies, plays and music, all of which she can enjoy in the company of others.

We are glad to have this generally quiet, but most efficient, lady volunteering for our agency. She has made a difference in a short period of time.

On Tour with NancyWith great excitement, I would like to introduce you to the man under the hat. I say that because 92-year-old George Freeman always wears a gentleman’s hat. And though he sports a walker, his wife June warned me, “He’s quick on his feet, Nancy, so you’ll have to run to keep up with him.” Man was she right. Every week I pick-up this sweet, adorable man living at Island View Suites and take him to his destinations. He is always smiling and quiet, but always has a “Good morning, Nancy”.

Sometimes we have three passengers at a time, so our conversations can get pretty interesting and funny. One day we all took a back seat to this quiet man who started talking in many different languages! I said, “George, how many languages do you speak

anyway?” He laughed and said, “Eight.” They include English, French, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, German, Italian, and Russian. Wow, that’s incredible!

When I returned him home that afternoon, I noticed a picture on his bureau of him and the late Pierre Elliott Trudeau (more on this later).I thought that this quiet man, with the hat, must have one heck of a story to tell. George was born on Nov. 12, 1921, in Winnipeg, and attended the United College of Winnipeg. He is a veteran of WWII, having served as a navigator in the RAF, and survived 51 bombing missions over Europe. Following the war, he returned home and completed his Master’s in Economics at the University of Toronto.George had big dreams and worked hard. He started as a clerk at the Bank of Canada and rose to become Deputy Governor. George’s daughters, Kate and Victoria, describe their dad as the life of the party, and as having a sense of humour with a dramatic flair. He is kind and honourable. He has a lot of compassion for all kinds of people, and always puts the needs of others ahead of his own. He has never been afraid to try something new. When he retired from life as an Economist with the Bank of Canada (during which he and their lucky mom travelled all over the world), he decided to buy a farm just outside of Arnprior, and in 1980 he became a sheep farmer. He and his wife June are two very different people in many ways, but each complements the other and they have been in a great partnership for 59 years, as of April 30th, 2014.Wow – one more thing. When I asked Kate to tell me about the picture of her Dad and Trudeau, she said, “That was when Dad had lunch with Trudeau when he was a Commissioner for the Royal Commission on Prices and Incomes in the 1970s”.There is more to this gentleman under that hat. There is a man of intelligence, a veteran, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a man of adventure and so much more! What an amazing journey they have had. We would like to share even more with our readers so we have arranged for a full story to appear in a May issue of the local newspaper. Stay tuned! Thank you, Kate and Victoria for sharing your Dad’s story.
