Notes on the Program

Gloria (31 minutes)ANTONIO VIVALDI (1678-1741)

Beginning in 1703 and intermittently formany decades, Antonio Vivaldi served asmusic factotum at the Pio Ospedale dellaPietá in Venice, an institution devoted tothe care and education of abandoned, orphaned, and indigent girls — often ofnoble lineage – with a special emphasis onmusical training (no Dickensian work houseor Dotheboys Hall). In addition to his dutiesas virtuoso violinist, violin teacher, orches-tra director, and instrument purchaser,Vivaldi served as resident composer, pro-ducing hundreds of works for variousinstruments and ensembles, includingnearly 450 concerti, usually at a rate ofmore than two per month. The residentgirls were trained in both string and windinstruments, including the organ, and aspart of their training, Vivaldi composed con-certos for every instrument and instrumentcombination. Many of them were appar-ently written with specific girl soloists inmind. While originally Vivaldi’s duties at theorphanage entailed only work on instru-mental music, in 1713, he was also put incharge of the chorus when the appointedmaestro di coro took a six-month leave ofabsence from which he never returned.Vivaldi was required to supply the choruswith new sacred vocal compositions, andhis reputation in this field rose quickly, elic-iting numerous commissions from outsidethe institution. The best known amongthese are the Gloria RV 589, Dixit Dominusand Beatus Vir. As with so many Vivaldiworks, the date of composition of theGloria is unknown. There also seem to beat least two different versions of the workwith subtle differences. Since the earlyBaroque Period composers have beenbreaking up the five major sections of theordinary of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo,Sanctus and Angus Dei) into smaller unitsin order to create music in keeping with thewords. The practice, however, began withthe first-known complete ordinary of the

Mass at the end of the fourteenth centuryby Guillaume de Machaut. Subsequently, composers have generally set the entireMass; the only section to receive separatetreatment is the Gloria since its generalspirit of praise applies to other church occa-sions. By the Baroque period, composersbegan to set each sentence of the text-heavy Gloria and Credo with differentmusic, usually for a variety of vocal forces, choruses, arias or small solo ensembles, and the music generally fit the mood of thetext. Vivaldi’s Gloria follows this practice. Each phrase of text is set to new music, and how Vivaldi matches music to text isobvious in the contrast between the firsttwo numbers. The exultant opening “Gloriain excelsis Deo” is an energetic song ofpraise while the following “Et in terra paxhominibus” slows the pace to reflect theidea of peace on earth. The soprano/altoduet, “Laudamus Te,” evokes an image oftwo angels calling out the litany of praises. The final part of the Gloria changes to oneof supplication, “Qui tollis peccata mundi,”in which the congregation prays for mercyand forgiveness of their sins. It is the mostsomber moment of this section of themass, but it also provides a musical transi-tion into the joyous conclusion, much like aslow movement in an instrumental work.To conclude, Vivaldi adheres to a Baroquetradition that lasted into the nineteenthcentury of setting the final words of theGloria, “Cum sancto spiritu,” as a fugue, but he does one better by making it a dou-ble fugue, the first subject on the openinglines, the second on the words “in GloriaDei patris. Amen.”

Psalm 23: A Journey with The Shepherd(39 minutes)PEPPER CHOPLIN (b. 1957)

I am so thankful to Barry Green and theAdult Choir of Bonsack Baptist Church ofRoanoke, VA, for their encouraging supportto give me the courage to create this can-tata. Psalm 23 is often read or recited atsignificant services and times of challenge.

The few verses are profound and expressso much. “Beside the still waters”,“through the valley of the shadow ofdeath”, “through all the days of our lives”,the psalm helps describe the journey wetravel as the sheep of His pasture.

We Are Not Alone: bookends the largerwork. Many have responded powerfully tothis reminder of God’s presence.

The Lord Is My Shepherd: With its sweep-ing melodies, this piece is both a declara-tion and a celebration. It is a statement ofchoice. Above all others, we choose to fol-low the Lord. With an inner joy, we sing,“Know that the Lord, He is God”.

Restore My Soul: So many things in life candrain our souls. I wrote some of this piecebeside a quiet lake, remembering how as achild, I would lie on the grass, peering intothe sky. I could imagine the psalmist in asimilar scene, playing a harp as He wor-shipped.

Lead Me on the Paths of Righteousness:Written during a time of cultural and politi-cal turmoil, I wrote this as a fervent prayer. The melody pulls us forward as we pray fordirection. A thoughtful reading of theanthem text will reveal the soul of this

piece. As we hunger for wisdom, we praythe words, “Show the way to justice, showthe way to truth…” and later, “When Imeet the darkness, fill me with Your light.”

Though I Walk Through the Valley:Everyone will experience the shadow ofdeath. It may be during a time of sicknessor when a loved one is lost. This anthemcalls out to God: “I know that you arethere. Save me from despair. Come andshow that I am not alone.”

You Comfort Me: After the weight of theprevious piece, this is meant to be a calm-ing salve, a reflective time of worship. Inthe final section, the choir sings much ofthe psalm as the title phrase soars above.

My Cup Overflows: This is a celebration ofall that has come before. It is a opportunityto bask in all the blessings of life with theShepherd.

Surely Goodness and Mercy: The first halfof this anthem serves as a doxology, a boldstatement of confidence in God’s blessingsand love. The second section begins, quietand low, then ascends as it leads us to thevision of our eternal heavenly home.
