The Women’s Musical Club of Toronto welcomes membersand guests to its 118th season of the finest chamber music. Music in the Afternoon, a five-concert series, presents bothCanadian and international artists on the threshold ofinternational recognition, as well as already established artistsand ensembles. The WMCT commissions a new work by aCanadian composer annually. The series is presented toWMCT members/subscribers, and single tickets are available.

The WMCT assists exceptional young Canadian talentthrough scholarships, awards and performance opportunities.Presented every third year, the Career Development Award isone of Canada’s most prestigious awards for a youngmusician embarking on a performance career.

A volunteer-run organization, the WMCT provides anopportunity for men and women to assist in the selection ofartists and the presentation of the concerts, in addition tosharing in the enjoyment of the performances.

Welcome to the second concert of the 118th season of the Women’s Musical Club

of Toronto’s Music in the Afternoon. For the 118th time the WMCT proudly presents the most sought-after musicians on the world stage, as well as younger performers who will surely be in that position before too long. I am excited to bring you five programmes of the finest chamber music, brought to life by artists of the most vivid imagination. Our opening concert featured a magical program from harpist Caroline Léonardelli, the Afiara Quartet and double bassist Joe Phillips, paving the way for the remarkable vocal beauty of our November recitalist, star mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard. 2016 opens with the Daedalus Quartet and clarinettist Romie de Guise-Langlois performing the monumental clarinet quintet by Brahms, followed by Dannthology: a program initiated by well-known Canadian viola hero, Steven Dann. Steve presents an intriguingly eclectic array of works and performers including the 2016 commissioned work from celebrated young Canadian composer, Zosha Di Castri. Our season closes with extraordinary pianist Pavel Kolesnikov. Honens Competition Laureate, Pavel is winning hearts around the world and will surely continue to do so at the WMCT.

We continue our season today with an extraordinary program from a truly exceptional artist. American mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard brings her dazzling personality and entrancing voice to repertoire bridging the country of her birth and that of her ancestry. Works by the composer she most loves to sing: Manuel de Falla, anchor this wonderful selection of American and Spanish song that is sure to leave us breathless.

Widely acclaimed for her “passionate intensity and remarkable vocal beauty”, Grammy Award winning mezzo-soprano, Isabel Leonard, continues to thrill audiences both in the opera house and the concert hall. In repertoire that ranges from Vivaldi to Mozart to Thomas Adès, she has graced the stages of the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Paris Opera, Salzburg Festival, and Glyndebourne Festival, with the foremost conductors, including Valery Gergiev, and Gustavo Dudamel, among many others.

Ms. Leonard is in constant demand as a recitalist and is on the Board of Trustees at Carnegie Hall. She is a recent Grammy Award winner for Thomas Adès’ The Tempest (Best Opera Recording) and the recipient of the 2013 Richard Tucker Award.

About the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto Foundation

The WMCT Foundation was established in 2000 with the goal of promoting classical chamber music by supporting the careers of

Canadian classical musicians, as well as classical music organizations, both in Toronto and across Canada. The primary way the Foundation

meets its goal is by funding the initiatives of the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto.

The mission of the Foundation is to develop and prudently manage the financial resources required to support the activities of

the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto, including its long-established chamber music concert series and funding of awards and scholarships

to continue the development of talented young Canadian classical musicians.

Since its inception the WMCT Foundation has provided over $235,000 in scholarships to fifty-five emerging Canadian classical musicians. Your charitable donation will enable the Foundation to
