Here am I, send me (Is 6:8)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I wish to express my gratitude to God for the commitment with which the Church throughout the world carried out the Extraordinary Missionary Month last October. I am convinced that it stimulated missionary conversion in many communities on the path indicated by the theme: “Baptized and Sent: the Church of Christ on Mission in the World”.

In this year marked by the suffering and challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic, the missionary journey of the whole Church continues in light of the words found in the account of the calling of the prophet Isaiah: “Here am I, send me” (6:8). This is the ever new response to the Lord’s question: “Whom shall I send?” (ibid.). This invitation from God’s merciful heart challenges both the Church and humanity as a whole in the current world crisis. “Like the disciples in the Gospel we were caught off guard by an unexpected, turbulent storm. We have realized that we are on the same boat, all of us fragile and disoriented, but at the same time important and needed, all of us called to row together, each of us in need of comforting the other. On this boat… are all of us. Just like those disciples, who spoke anxiously with one voice, saying ‘We are perishing’ (v. 38), so we too have realized that we cannot go on thinking of ourselves, but only together can we do this” (Meditation in Saint Peter’s Square, 27 March 2020). We are indeed frightened, disoriented and afraid. Pain and death make us experience our human frailty, but at the same time remind us of our deep desire for life and liberation from evil. In this context, the call to mission, the invitation to step out of ourselves for love of God and neighbor presents itself as an opportunity for sharing, service and intercessory prayer. The mission that God entrusts to each one of us leads us from fear and introspection to a renewed realization that we find ourselves precisely when we give ourselves to others…

Understanding what God is saying to us at this time of pandemic also represents a challenge for the Church’s mission. Illness, suffering, fear and isolation challenge us. The poverty of those who die alone, the abandoned, those who have lost their jobs and income, the homeless and those who lack food challenge us. Being forced to observe social distancing and to stay at home invites us to rediscover that we need social relationships as well as our communal relationship with God. Far from increasing mistrust and indifference, this situation should make us even more attentive to our way of relating to others. And prayer, in which God touches and moves our hearts, should make us ever more open to the need of our brothers and sisters for dignity and freedom, as well as our responsibility to care for all creation. The impossibility of gathering as a Church to celebrate the Eucharist has led us to share the experience of the many Christian communities that cannot celebrate Mass every Sunday. In all of this, God’s question: “Whom shall I send?” is addressed once more to us and awaits a generous and convincing response: “Here am I, send me!” (Is 6:8). God continues to look for those whom he can send forth into the world and to the nations to bear witness to his love, his deliverance from sin and death, his liberation from evil (cf. Mt 9:35-38; Lk 10:1-12).

The celebration of World Mission Day is also an occasion for reaffirming how prayer, reflection and the material help of your offerings are so many opportunities to participate actively in the mission of Jesus in his Church. The charity expressed in the collections that take place during the liturgical celebrations of the third Sunday of October is aimed at supporting the missionary work carried out in my name by the Pontifical Mission Societies, in order to meet the spiritual and material needs of peoples and Churches throughout the world, for the salvation of all…

Aquí estoy, mándame (Is 6,8)

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

Doy gracias a Dios por la dedicación con que se vivió en toda la Iglesia el Mes Misionero Extraordinario durante el pasado mes de octubre. Estoy seguro de que contribuyó a estimular la conversión misionera de muchas comunidades, a través del camino indicado por el tema: “Bautizados y enviados: la Iglesia de Cristo en misión en el mundo”.

En este año, marcado por los sufrimientos y desafíos causados por la pandemia del COVID-19, este camino misionero de toda la Iglesia continúa a la luz de la palabra que encontramos en el relato de la vocación del profeta Isaías: «Aquí estoy, mándame» (Is 6,8). Es la respuesta siempre nueva a la pregunta del Señor: «¿A quién enviaré?» (ibíd.). Esta llamada viene del corazón de Dios, de su misericordia que interpela tanto a la Iglesia como a la humanidad en la actual crisis mundial. «Al igual que a los discípulos del Evangelio, nos sorprendió una tormenta inesperada y furiosa. Nos dimos cuenta de que estábamos en la misma barca, todos frágiles y desorientados; pero, al mismo tiempo, importantes y necesarios, todos llamados a remar juntos, todos necesitados de confortarnos mutuamente. En esta barca, estamos todos. Como esos discípulos, que hablan con una única voz y con angustia dicen: “perecemos” (cf. v. 38), también nosotros descubrimos que no podemos seguir cada uno por nuestra cuenta, sino sólo juntos» (Meditación en la Plaza San Pedro, 27 marzo 2020). Estamos realmente asustados, desorientados y atemorizados. El dolor y la muerte nos hacen experimentar nuestra fragilidad humana; pero al mismo tiempo todos somos conscientes de que compartimos un fuerte deseo de vida y de liberación del mal. En este contexto, la llamada a la misión, la invitación a salir de nosotros mismos por amor de Dios y del prójimo se presenta como una oportunidad para compartir, servir e interceder. La misión que Dios nos confía a cada uno nos hace pasar del yo temeroso y encerrado al yo reencontrado y renovado por el don de sí mismo…

Comprender lo que Dios nos está diciendo en estos tiempos de pandemia también se convierte en un desafío para la misión de la Iglesia. La enfermedad, el sufrimiento, el miedo, el aislamiento nos interpelan. Nos cuestiona la pobreza de los que mueren solos, de los desahuciados, de los que pierden sus empleos y salarios, de los que no tienen hogar ni comida. Ahora, que tenemos la obligación de mantener la distancia física y de permanecer en casa, estamos invitados a redescubrir que necesitamos relaciones sociales, y también la relación comunitaria con Dios. Lejos de aumentar la desconfianza y la indiferencia, esta condición debería hacernos más atentos a nuestra forma de relacionarnos con los demás. Y la oración, mediante la cual Dios toca y mueve nuestro corazón, nos abre a las necesidades de amor, dignidad y libertad de nuestros hermanos, así como al cuidado de toda la creación. La imposibilidad de reunirnos como Iglesia para celebrar la Eucaristía nos ha hecho compartir la condición de muchas comunidades cristianas que no pueden celebrar la Misa cada domingo. En este contexto, la pregunta que Dios hace: «¿A quién voy a enviar?», se renueva y espera nuestra respuesta generosa y convencida:«¡Aquí estoy, mándame!» (Is 6,8). Dios continúa buscando a quién enviar al mundo y a cada pueblo, para testimoniar su amor, su salvación del pecado y la muerte, su liberación del mal (cf. Mt 9,35-38; Lc 10,1-12).

La celebración la Jornada Mundial de la Misión también significa reafirmar cómo la oración, la reflexión y la ayuda material de sus ofrendas son oportunidades para participar activamente en la misión de Jesús en su Iglesia. La caridad, que se expresa en la colecta de las celebraciones litúrgicas del tercer domingo de octubre, tiene como objetivo apoyar la tarea misionera realizada en mi nombre por las Obras Misionales Pontificias, para hacer frente a las necesidades espirituales y materiales de los pueblos y las iglesias del mundo entero y para la salvación de todos…

ONE SUNDAY TO HELP THE WHOLE WORLD

EVERY YEAR, SOMETHING SPECIALHAPPENS on the next-to-last Sunday of October. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY joins all Catholics of the world - all of us children of God - into one community of faith. At Mass that Sunday, we recommit ourselves to our common vocation, through Baptism, to be missionaries, through prayer, participation in the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

In his message for World Mission Sunday this year, Pope Francis asks us to respond to our baptismal call to mission by saying, “Here I Am, Send Me.” This is the mission that all Christians have received, and God gives us the grace to live it out wherever we may be.

As we pray and respond on World Mission Sunday here at home, we share in those celebrations taking place in every parish, seminary, school, and convent all over the world. Together with children of God in every corner of the globe, we become voices for mission, providing the prayerful and financial support necessary to bring the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope’s missions.

In a world where so much divides us, World Mission Sunday rejoices in our unity as children of God, His missionaries! And it provides an opportunity to support the life-giving presence of the Church among the poor and marginalized in more than 1,111 mission dioceses.

UN DOMINGO PARA AYUDAR A TODO EL MUNDO

TODOS LOS AÑOS ALGO ESPECIAL SUCEDEen el penúltimo Domingo de Octubre. El Domingo Mundial de las Misiones une a todos los católicos del mundo, a todos nosotros los hijos de Dios, en una sola comunidad de fe. En la misa de ese Domingo, nos comprometemos nuevamente con nuestra vocación común, mediante el bautizo, a ser misioneros a través de la oración, la participación en la Eucaristía y aportando generosamente a la colecta para la Sociedad para la Propagación de la Fe.

En su mensaje para el Domingo Mundial de las Misiones de este

año, el Papa Francisco nos pide que respondamos a nuestro llamado bautismal a la misión diciendo: “Aquí Me Tienes, Mándame A Mi.” Esta es la misión que todos los Cristianos

han recibido, y Dios nos da la gracia de vivirla donde sea que

estemos.

Cuando oramos en casa y respondemos al Domingo Mundial de las Misiones, compartimos en esta celebración que se lleva a cabo en todas las parroquias, seminarios, escuelas y conventos del mundo. STEPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

PASOS PARA UN EXITOSO DOMINGO MUNDIAL DE LAS MISIONES

World Mission Sunday celebrates our baptismal call to continue Christ’s mission with our brothers and sisters half a world away, through our prayers and sacrifices. Here are seven steps to celebrate World Mission Sunday in your parish:

• Review the enclosed World Mission Sunday resources. These are also available at www.missionsla.org/wms.

• Share these resources with your parish staff, council, and liturgy committees, and discuss how to both promote and celebrate WMS during that Sunday’s liturgy especially considering the pandemic.

• Include in weekly homilies and bulletins Archbishop Gomez’s Mission Sunday letter or a message from your executive director, Msgr. Terrance Fleming.

• Display the enclosed posters before World Mission Sunday – and during the entire mission month (October).

• Distribute World Mission Sunday envelopes throughout your parish pews or outdoor seating area.

• Arrange for a pre-recorded virtual missionary to share their experiences with your parishioners, which can be arranged by contacting the Mission Office at (213) 637-7223.

• Celebrate World Mission Sunday with your entire parish community – your school and/or religious education program, parish organizations, and, most especially, during the Liturgies of World Mission Sunday weekend.

El Domingo Mundial de las Misiones celebra nuestro llamado bautismal para continuar la misión de Cristo con nuestros hermanos y hermanas por todo el mundo, a través de nuestras oraciones y sacrificios.

Aquí están siete pasos para celebrar El Domingo Mundial de las Misiones en su parroquia:

HERE I AM, SEND ME TO AFRICA…where those who are sick are provided loving care at 6,500 Catholic hospitals and small clinics, and where 19,000 young men are preparing to be priests, to uplift the poor, celebrate the Sacraments, reach out to children and families, and comfort the sick and dying.

HERE I AM, SEND ME TO ASIA…where six million children receive an education from Religious Sisters in more than 15,000 Church-run elementary schools.

What is the origin of World Mission Sunday?

In 1926, Pope Pius XI instituted World Mission Sunday. He asked for prayer, animation, celebration, and offerings for the Missions. His concern was to engender a sense of responsibility in people for supporting the Missions throughout the world.

The first commemoration was in 1927 and the Pope asked that it would be observed in every diocese, parish and institute. It was to be a true World Mission Sunday.The collection on that first World Mission Sunday, like today, is for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, providing support for the life-giving and hope-filled work and witness of priests, religious, and lay pastoral leaders in mission churches.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, World Mission Sunday, making it possible for priests, religious Sisters and Brothers, and lay pastoral leadersto reach out, in the name of Jesus, to families and communities in need in over 1,111 mission dioceses.

¿Cuál es el origen del Domingo Mundial de las Misiones?
