Texas
By: Iris Guerrero
The women’s health care program in Texas
began in 2007 and offers free family planning
services to low income women between the

The well woman’s program serves an
average of 24,000 women each year that would
otherwise lack access to life-saving preventative
health servicesJordan Smith, Austin Chronicle

Texas cut its support statewide for women's health clinics by two-
thirds in 2011, eliminating access to
family planning services for nearly 300,000 poor
and working-class women.

But Texas is going a step further, with a law that eliminates funding for
women's health clinics that either associate with abortion providers or advocate for abortion
rights.Wade Goodwyn, NPR
None of the dozens of clinics that will lose state funds actually perform abortions. It is already
against state and federal law for clinics that perform
abortions to receive taxpayer dollars.Wade Goodwyn, NPR

Women are the collateral
damage of this policy.
Loss of funding will deprive thousands of Texas women of critical health service, especially in rural areas in which no alternative provider to the Women’s Health Program is available

The massive loss in annual funding will force clinics to close and lay off staff.
