On behalf of the Governors, staff and students I would like to thank you for your interest in The Sixth Form @ Woodkirk Academy. It is our intention that, by reading this prospectus, you will acquire a flavour of how choosing to study at Woodkirk will provide you with a firm foundation for adult life through a happy and memorable experience.

We can offer you an extensive range of courses and experiences. Woodkirk students have an impressive history of making the most of the opportunities on offer to gain good results, to make a successful transition to higher education training or employment of their choice as well as making a valued contribution to school life and the wider community.

Our Sixth Form has a friendly and supportive environment which reflects the hard working atmosphere common to the whole school. Great importance is attached to the relationships our students share with their teachers and tutors,

who monitor progress, oversee their personal development and prepare them for the next stage of their lives.

As a member of our Sixth Form you will have the opportunity to develop a whole range of skills; sporting, dramatic, musical, organisational and leadership which will be of benefit to you throughout the whole of your life. Our Sixth Form is large enough to offer a wide range of opportunities while being small enough to care and treat everyone as an individual.

We are very proud of our Academy, I hope you enjoy reading about it and, perhaps, visiting to see first-hand some of the outstanding work produced which reflects the standards we endeavour to achieve for all students.

Woodkirk is a special place to learn. I have had the pleasure of teaching here for over two decades and the traditions of excellence, knowing our students well and promoting enjoyable learning experiences have always meant that progression routes to university and the world of work are very impressive. We are very proud of our past and will be working hard to further our deserved reputation for academic rigour and success.

Our student support systems are second to none. Year 12 and Year 13 have their own dedicated and experienced Year Tutors who provide help with the widest range of issues from emotional support, study skills, preparation for Higher Education and intellectual challenge. We have an open door policy where students are welcome to raise issues and seek

advice which can lead to accessing support such as academic intervention, life coaching and mentoring.

The Academy has a wide range of resources to help you in your work, with dedicated study areas, extensive ICT and library facilities. These are complimented by the Sixth Form area which is designed to promote independent study skills necessary for life.

If you have the desire, commitment and positive work ethic needed for Level 3 studies, I would be delighted to see you in The Sixth Form @ Woodkirk Academy. I can guarantee a fulfilling, rewarding and enjoyable experience.

My name is Steve Alleston, current Chair of Governors and former link governor to the Sixth Form @ Woodkirk Academy.

I take pleasure in being able to recommend this Academy to any prospective new students who are prepared to be pushed towards their full potential. Both my son Jake and daughter Natalie have advanced into professional careers due to the care, guidance and support offered to them throughout their time here. The Sixth Form staff are very driven and demand high standards of behaviour, work

quality and teamwork. Year in, year out, they achieve some remarkable results and they will set you up well for the future.

The atmosphere however, is what will impress you the most. Come and feel it for yourselves, I am certain that you will find a warm welcome.

EnvironmentWe expect our Sixth Form students to maintain our high standards at all times and be role models for our main school students.

The Dennis Fisher Sixth Form Centre is well resourced with two common rooms, divided into silent study and social study areas. We also have two dedicated Study Support Suites, managed by specialists with expertise across a wide range of subjects. We also provide excellent ICT facilities, with over fifty computers and colour printing facilities dedicated solely for Sixth Form use during independent study periods.

You can keep up to date with current affairs through BBC and SKY news. Now and again, you may get to see some daytime TV.

We regularly publicise the latest apprenticeship and employment opportunities. You will also have access to university prospectuses, information about Access courses and other relevant materials to support you in making well informed choices about your future.

The Learning Resources Centre is a quiet study area where you can access support materials for your course. In addition, differentiated subject specific resources are available from the two dedicated Study Support Suites, based in the Sixth Form area. Here you will also find a team of Learning and Support Managers, who can support you on a one-to-one basis, or in small group work, to enhance your progress.

All departments offer workshops, led by subject specialists. These are usually small group seminar-style sessions, allowing you to receive one-to-one feedback and accelerate your learning.

The marking and feedback policy supports learning and we will expect you to respond to any comments you receive, to facilitate deeper learning.

We operate the Bursary Scheme, where students can receive payments if they meet eligibility criteria. We can also offer discretionary payments, such as contributing to the cost of Medlink courses.

You will receive the very best advice to support university, apprenticeship and employment applications. We have access to a highly experienced in-house Careers Advisor. Parents are welcome to attend appointments.

Art and Design BTECThe BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design provides in-depth knowledge from a wide selection of professional creative fields. The qualification consolidates the skills and techniques needed to begin a professional career or move on to further study. This is a full time course which will take two years to complete and is equivalent to three GCE A Levels. You will be given the opportunity to work independently within a studio environment, developing personal strengths as both artist and designer.

The structure of the course allows for flexible learning which will meet the interests, ability and aspirations of most students. The range of projects covered each year varies but has included the following: mural design, public art, concept art for computer games, teaching, graphic design, textiles, sculpture design and fine art. The final unit of work teaches you how to develop your own products to sell and market yourself as a successful freelance artist. Throughout the course you will get the opportunity to adopt professional practice and standards within a range of creative careers. You will have the opportunity to discover your strengths and we will do our best to create projects that will meet your needs.

The course is 100% coursework based which means it is continually assessed and marked by your teachers. There is no examination to sit.

Entrance criteria:• A*-C in GCSE Art and Design• BTEC First or above in Art and Design• Students with GCSE grade C or above in Textiles

or Graphics will also be considered

Art and Design AS/A LevelThis course has been designed to enable you to cover the AS and full A Level within the same course. The work completed in year one can be used as a starting point for the work you complete in year 2.

AS LevelThis is a separate course to the full A Level but an excellent introduction to the working practices you will need to successfully achieve a good grade in the full course.

This is structured, taught and coursework based. You will be given a theme to research and shown a range of new processes and working practices. There are lots of opportunities for you to make a personal response to this theme through photography, drawing and large scale final pieces. The course will involve a compulsory visit to a major gallery.

The second part of the course is a ten hour examination. You will be given the examination paper six to eight weeks before and we will support you in making your own personal response to the theme.

A2 LevelThis is coursework based and will utilise the work you completed in year one. During this unit you will write and direct your own project brief, reflecting your personal strengths and interests. You may work in any media, including photography, sculpture, drawing, painting, print or even film. Alongside this practical work you will also write a research study of between 1,000 and 3,000 words on your chosen theme.

The second part of the course is a fifteen hour examination. You will be given the examination paper six to eight weeks before and we will support you in making your own personal response to the theme.

Entrance criteria:• A*-C in GCSE Art and Design• Students with GCSE grade C or above

Business Studies AS/A LevelYou will study in a variety of contexts from small to large, UK to global and manufacturing to service. The central theme is about decision making and the context in which decisions are made. This is looked at from the four main areas within a business: marketing, finance, people and operations. The wider political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental factors are also considered in Year 12. The course builds on GCSE but also covers a number of new areas. Assessment is via written examinations that are a mixture of multiple choice questions, short answer questions and extended responses based around real and imaginary case study scenarios. Many students continue their studies in Higher Education where Business Studies is an increasingly important component of many degree courses. Previous Business Studies students have embarked on courses such as Law, Management, Accountancy, Marketing and Human Resources. Business Studies gives opportunities for careers in the public and private sectors, both in the UK and abroad. It also provides basic information for those who wish to start up their own business.

Entrance criteria: A*-C at GCSE Business. Merit at BTEC Business. The course is suitable for students who have not previously studied Business. If you have not studied at GCSE you will be interviewed by the Head of Department to assess your suitability. A Level Business Studies requires a good level of numeracy and a willingness to develop a wide understanding of key industries and business news.

Business Studies BTECThis is a specialist qualification for students who have a clear view about their future career or are seeking progression to higher education.

BTEC Level 3 qualifications are equivalent to A Levels and are highly valued by universities and employers alike. BTECs are work related qualifications. They provide a more practical, real-world approach to learning alongside a theoretical background. This qualification gives students an understanding of the essential knowledge and skills needed to help begin or progress in a wide variety of business careers.

BTEC courses consist of units of work. All work is assessed internally by school staff. There are no exams. Outcomes are measured using grading criteria of Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Examples of the sort of work you will be expectedto complete for assessment include: assignments,short projects and presentations.

With this qualification you can progress straight into employment. If you are successful, there are a wide variety of potential careers available to you. Alternatively, you may choose to go onto higher education. All BTEC courses qualify for UCAS points. With good grades you can apply for various courses at university.

Entrance criteria:• A*-C at GCSE Business• Merit at BTEC Level 2 Business• Students who gain a Level 2 Pass may be admitted

to the course following an interview by the Head of Department. The course is suitable for students who have not previously studied Business

Fashion and ClothingBTECDo you have a keen interest in the Fashion industry and want to learn new skills which will enable you to progress to Fashion and Art College smoothly? Then the Level 3 Fashion and Clothing qualification may be for you.

The course enables students to gain a variety of practical experiences through fashion illustration, pattern drafting and the manufacture of a variety of toiles, own garments and fashion accessories.

The course explores different elements of the fashion industry from retail, computer aided design, contextual history of fashion and a wide variety of production techniques using a sewing machine.

Students who are suitable for this course must possess the following skills in order to be successful; have a high level of creativity when designing and manufacturing, can confidently use a sewing machine and have a genuine interest in fashion and clothing. Essential skills that students must hold are the ability to self-manage their time and work independently as this is an assignment based course.

Entrance criteria:• A*-C in GCSE Textiles• Students who do not have Textiles GCSE will be

interviewed by the Head of Department

16.

CSkills/CITB Diploma in BricklayingIndustry recognised Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying. This qualification allows access onto the NVQ in Bricklaying, entry into college on Level 3 Bricklaying/Site Management or the BTEC National/Higher National programmes.

You will receive full CSCS card training and you will be entered for the CSCS card test. If successful, the Academy will pay in full for your CSCS card allowing you entry on to UK building sites at the end of your course.

The course provides at least 35 hours of work experience, either in school or at one of the many building sites across the Leeds region. Previous candidates have enjoyed work experience on Trinity Leeds and the Leeds Arena.

During the course you will study Health, Safety and Welfare, Setting out complex structures, Technology in Construction and Communications in the classroom. To add to this you will study a variety of practical units intended to coincide with the practical work undertaken in the workshop.

Practical activities will be assessed by an in-house assignment consisting of up to date and industry relevant models. Theory related units are tested via online short multiple choice exams. All Units will be carried out as appropriate to coincide with any work experience undertaken during the course and to coincide with the timing of CSCS tests.

English Language AS/A LevelEnglish Language will encourage you to enjoy your interest in the written and spoken word through learning about its variety; its accent, dialects and its use in occupations, leisure and all other walks of life. You will produce your own portfolio of original writing which might include magazine, newspaper articles or guides.

Part of this component involves an investigation of data which you collect and write about. What interests you about how we use language?

English Language will enable you to explore questions such as: Do men and women speak in the same way? Why do some people have a telephone voice? How do we create our online identities? What is ‘correct’ English? How does a piece of paper make us do something? What ‘rules’ do conversations have?

English is a universal subject which can be applied to anything you choose to do in your future career. Whilst providing analytical and essay skills, it also consists of elements of psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics. Many students choose to study both English subjects.

Entrance criteria:• A*-B in English

Product Design, Resistant Materials AS/A LevelDo you have a keen interest in Product Design and hold the necessary practical skills to manufacture commercial products to a high standard within the workshop? If so, then A Level Product Design may be for you.

The course enables you to gain and develop a variety of practical experiences through workshop based skills using appropriate tools and equipment.

You will develop your design skills through a variety of technical drawings both by hand and through the use of computer aided design.

The course explores theoretical elements of different design movements, systems and control, sustainability, materials and processes and quality at all levels of production and within the manufacturing industry.

You must possess the following skills in order to be successful; have a high level of creativity when designing and manufacturing, confidence using a wide variety of tools and equipment within the workshop and a genuine interest in Product Design. Essential skills that students must hold are the ability to self-manage their time, work independently and apply all knowledge taught through all elements of the course.

Entrance criteria:• A*-C in GCSE Resistant Materials, Product Design

(Resistant Materials or Graphics) or Graphic Products

• Portfolio of creative samples• Level 2 Construction

English Literature AS/A LevelEnglish Literature will encourage you to enjoy the literary canon and its infinite variety, through a study of the writers’ methods and the influence of the social, cultural and historical contexts in which texts were written. You will be expected to read as widely as possible and will be given opportunities to read and discuss texts creatively, rigorously and independently. Even dramatically!

A universal subject, English Literature can be applied to whatever you choose to do in your chosen career. It is also one of the Russell Group qualifications, known as a facilitating subject, which gives it high global academic status. Employers and universities value evidence that candidates are able to work independently, think critically and possess skills in written and spoken communication.

Many students who study English Literature will go into general management, research and consultancy, and the public services, as well as employment in the media, law, publishing and the creative industries. It is also an important third or fourth A Level for students intending to read Science or Medicine.

Entrance criteria:• GCSE in English Language and English Literature

(ideally a B)

English Language and LiteratureHave you ever wondered what a writer is trying to imply in their work, how they create a ‘character’ who seems real, who you could meet? How you are persuaded to visit Paris by just the words on a piece of paper? This course will enable you to explore these ideas and more using linguistic terminology and literary concepts.

English Language and Literature is an exciting new course. You will study an anthology of short extracts centred around Paris; these range from websites to diary entries, short stories and audio guides to name but a few. You are assigned the task of writing pieces which could be published in national newspapers or novels. This course is unique in that it allows you to analyse both language and literature studying a range of novels, plays and non-fiction.

You will develop your ability to produce essays about the choices writers make and the course will allow you to develop your skills as a writer.

Entrance Criteria• You may NOT study the combination of English

Language and Literature with either a qualification in English Language or a qualification in English Literature

• A*-C in English and also in English Literature

Chemistry AS/A LevelAre you the sort of person that enjoys practical work and explaining how and why chemical reactions work? Are you confident with numerical work and can you rearrange equations effortlessly? If ‘yes’ is the answer to these questions then Chemistry is the subject for you.

The course study of physical, organic and inorganic chemistry and their practical applications to the world around us.

It is essential for careers as varied as medicine, environmental science, pharmacy and forensic science. You need to be highly motivated and conscientious and well organised to meet the demands of this rewarding yet challenging course.

Entrance criteria:Either

• A*-B in GCSE Chemistry with A*-B grades in the examined units; or

• A*-B in Core and Additional Science with A*-B in the Chemistry exam component

And

• A*-B in Mathematics

Applied Science Applied A Level (Single Award)Are you interested in the practical aspect of science and how it is applied in the workplace? Are you interested in a course which includes aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics?

Applied Science will give you experience of the kind of practical work carried out beyond GCSE level as you investigate and identify chemical substances. You will also study how energy is transferred in the human body and the physical world. Finally, you will investigate the workings of an organisation which uses science in the commercial world beyond school and universities.

This is a course which will help you to work independently as you produce your own portfolio of evidence for your investigations. Applied Science provides a sound basis for HE courses in biochemical science, food technology, human physiology, material science, nursing, sports science or any science based course. If you are looking for a course which combines academic and vocational science this could be the course for you.

Physics AS/A LevelDo you ever watch films or programmes on TV and think – ‘What makes that happen, how does it work?’ Are you someone who enjoys solving problems? Can you cope easily with applying mathematics in different situations? If you do, you should think about studying Physics. A Level Physics will give you an insight into the ‘microscopic’ world e.g. Sub-atomic particles - Baryons, Quarks, Mesons, etc. and into the ‘macroscopic’ world e.g. Super Giant Stars, Black Holes, Galaxies, etc. It will also train you to think differently about problems and how to solve them.

The characteristics honed in Physics are sought after by many employers. Physics is considered to be an essential qualification in most engineering jobs and extremely desirable in so many others – too many to list!

Entrance criteria:Either

• A*-B in GCSE Physics with A*-B grades in the examined units; or

• A*-B in Core and Additional Science with A*-B in the Physics exam component

And

• A*-B in Mathematics

Biology AS/A LevelThe Biology course develops an understanding of biological facts and principles and an appreciation of their significance. This will prepare you with many skills needed for University and professional courses.

Many of our A Level students have a great interest in the natural world, green issues or medical sciences. The course covers human biology, ecology, biochemistry, biotechnology and genetics.

Entrance criteria:Either

• A*-B in GCSE Biology with A*-B grades in the examined units; or

• A*-B in Core and Additional Science with A*-B in the Biology exam component

And

• A*-B in Mathematics

Government & PoliticsAS/A LevelIf you are interested in current affairs and understanding more about the world around you, then Government and Politics is for you. We study both British and American Politics in lessons which offer plenty of opportunities for lively discussion and debates. As there is no opportunity to study this subject before Key Stage 5 we do not require any subject experience. However, we do expect students to have an interest in the subject matter which should be enhanced by reading newspapers and watching the news.

Outside of the classroom we visit the Houses of Parliament in London, have trips to universities to attend talks and conferences and invite political speakers into school. This year the students also

Geography AS/A LevelGeography is a fascinating and contemporary subject. The exciting new Geography A Level course allows you to engage critically with real world issues and places. The subject gives you an understanding of the world’s changing peoples, places and environments. You will study relevant topics and global issues which include tectonic hazards, globalisation and water conflicts. The A Level will give you an understanding of other people and cultures, and develop your own views about social, political or environmental issues.

Geography is one of the facilitating subjects. These are subjects that are considered preferable to study at A Level for entry to the UK’s top universities. The multi-skilled nature of the subject makes geography graduates among the most employable people in the country.

Your A Level learning will be complimented by field trips. This will include the opportunity to visit Sorrento or Sicily in Year 12. These trips allow you to see geography and theories come to life as well as improve your knowledge and understanding of the subject. You will also learn skills in data collection and analysis, map work, observational and investigative skills, computer and technology skills, communication and mathematical skills.

Entrance criteria:• Grade A*-C in Geography• If you have not studied at GCSE you will be

interviewed by the Head of Department to assess your suitability

History AS/A LevelHistory gives you lots of transferable skills such as research, analysis of source material, communication, debate, presentation of ideas and the ability to prove/disprove theories. It is therefore useful for a range of careers such as journalism, broadcasting, publishing, law, politics, management, teaching and media.

In the classroom, you will be involved in researching for and producing presentations and debates. You will also have the opportunity to develop skills needed for independent learning.

The content for AS and the full A Level is identical in the first year and the skills are closely linked. For the Breadth study you will find out about the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII as well as life for ordinary people at this time. For the Depth study you will find out about Russia from 1917 to 1929 and investigate the impact of war and revolution. If you continue with History into the second year you will continue with these two topics, studying the rest of the Tudor monarchs and Russia up to 1953. You will also undertake a personal study of a period of your own choice.

subject, you must be able to research independently using books, articles and the internet. No prior knowledge of the law is necessary

MathematicsAS/A LevelIf you enjoy solving problems, exploring complex ideas and challenging yourself with new learning then Maths may be the right course for you. A Level Mathematics will introduce you to the next level of Mathematics including topics in Trigonometry, Calculus, Algebra and Applied Mathematics. You will learn to approach unfamiliar and complex problems in a systematic way applying your knowledge and developing skills in analysis, problem solving and logic.

You will study two core and one Applied Maths unit in both Year 12 and Year 13. Core 1 and core 2 introduce you to ideas beyond GCSE Maths, developing your skills in Algebra and Trigonometry, introducing you to Calculus and expanding on your knowledge of sequences.

These ideas are then developed further in Core 3 and Core 4 with a strong focus on Calculus and Trigonometry. You will also study Statistics 1 in Year 12 and Decision 1 in Year 13. Statistics will further develop your understanding of the topics covered in GCSE Data Handling and your analytical skills looking at Data and Probability while Decision Mathematics is an introduction to Algorithms and Linear Programming linking closely to Computer Science and Business and Economics.

This is a very highly regarded A Level course which links well to many other subjects including sciences, computing and ICT, Business and Economics.

Law AS/A LevelLaw offers you the opportunity to learn aboutfascinating offences such as murder, manslaughter, GBH, ABH, assault, battery, criminal damage and theft, by studying a range of criminal case law. You will also learn about profitable negligence and compensation claims.

You will develop the skills needed to analyse law and the legal system, and to solve civil and criminal scenarios. You will learn to present a logical, coherent argument using legal terminology.

You will gain an insight into the wider law field by visits to the courts and talks from specialists within the legal profession. A Level Law is not required to go on to study Law at university, although it is a great advantage to have a firm grounding in the subject for success at degree level. Taking this course will allow you to develop a wide skills base which is valuable in all professions.

This course is assessed purely by exams, with all exams taking place in Summer.

Entrance criteria:• 5 A*-C at GCSE including Grade B in English• You must be able to write well and think clearly

and have an ability to absorb detailed factual information as all assessment is by essay based examinations

BTEC Applied LawThis course is assessed purely by coursework which must be word processed. You will study a wider range of topics compared to the A Level course, including, amongst others an investigation into police powers and how they can be abused.

Further MathematicsFurther Maths is ideal for those people that enjoy nothing better than solving problems. You will learn Maths that you usually do not see until university but with the support of a school environment. Further Maths introduces complex numbers, matrices, alternative coordinate systems, differential equations and more advanced calculus that you usually see in A Level Maths.

Core MathsCore Maths is a new course introduced to offer a continuation of Mathematical study for students not suited to A Level Maths. The course is a Level 3 qualification and allows any student with a grade C or above to continue studying Maths post 16.

The Core Maths course is designed to be a practical course focussing on problem solving and more complex mathematical ideas that you see in GCSE.

You will study aspects of financial maths, statistics, the use of technology applied to problem solving and more algebraic techniques. The course is an ideal accompaniment to Level 3 Science courses, Business Studies and Social Sciences and will give you a solid grounding in the techniques required for these subjects post A Level.

Physical Education AS/A LevelYou will study topics across three main areas of study; Physiology/Biomechanics, Psychology and Contemporary issues in sport. Across these areas, you will learn about the human body respiratory and circulatory systems, levers and their application to sporting performance, Information Processing and how a performer interprets information amongst more contemporary sporting topics.

The AS course builds upon the GCSE Physical Education course. It is strongly advised that you have previously studied GCSE PE. The new structure to the AS exam aims to stretch your ability to produce extended responses, with a mix of multiple choice answers, short and long answers making up the paper. You will be required to analyse, evaluate and critique much more detailed responses as part of several banded mark questions on the exam. You will sit one exam in summer which will contribute 70% of your overall mark. The remaining 30% is spilt between your practical performance or coaching performance in a sport, and an analysis of your performance. This can be written or in verbal format. You will analyse one weakness in this analysis.

In the second year, you will develop your answers and expand more thoroughly on your responses to questions of topics such as Energy Systems in the

body, Muscle structure, Sport and Aggression and Hooliganism in sport. The range of topics covered is vast and you must expect to be challenged with the theory content on this course.

You will sit one exam that contributes towards your overall grade. This is worth 70% with the remaining 30% being assessed in a practical unit. The A Level exam paper consists of a range of multiple choice, short and long questions, with there being more long responses needed compared with AS Physical Education. For the practical unit you will be assessed in one sport, either as a performer or a coach in a competitive context. Part of this assessment is a written piece of coursework where you must analyse your performance, identifying two weaknesses.

Previous Physical Education students have gone on to higher education to study subjects such as Physical Education teaching, Sports Marketing, Sport and Journalism, Sport, Leisure and Business Management, Sports Therapy, Sport and Exercise Science, Physiotherapy.

Entry requirements:Due to the level of theory on the A Level course you must have a high C grade on the theory paper for GCSE Physical Education; it is recommended a B grade minimum. You must have a minimum of a B on the practical module for GCSE Physical Education or equivalent. A B grade in Biology is desirable. If you have taken BTEC Physical Education, you must have received a merit on the exam and overall. It is recommended that you have good essay writing skills.

Philosophy & Ethics AS/A LevelA subject which involves the study of Ancient Greek to post-modern philosophical thinkers on how they approach issues of life, death and the soul and addresses all the questions that may arise from this this. You will then progress to study contemporary modern ethical dilemmas related to abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering and sexuality. Based on these ethical issues you begin to apply ethical theory from great thinkers such as John Stuart Mill, Immanuel Kant, St. Thomas and Aquinas and others in the field of ethics.

This course is portfolio based and requires you to be organised, independent and motivated. We are an extremely supportive department and will endeavour to assist you in exceeding your potential.

Eligibility for admission – priority order

1. Young people in public care.2. Applicants from students in Year 11 at Woodkirk

Academy.3. Applicants from students in Year 11 from other

institutions (limited to a maximum of 50).4. Applicants from out of year, will be considered on

an exceptional basis.

Criteria for entry – Year 12

We will offer students a place if they seem likely to be able to cope with the A Level courses. These courses are challenging and we think that attainment at GCSE is the best guide to future success at A Level, especially if supplemented by attitudinal and attendance data. This is based on experience and knowledge of the course requirements.

Admission to the Sixth Form will be guided by:

i. Examination results at GCSE which confirm an adequate base level; generally at least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language and Mathematics and an average point score of 39*. (Photocopies will not be accepted).

ii. At least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, excluding English Language and/or mathematics and an average point score of 39* (students must resit English and/or maths).

iii. Students who achieve an average point score of between 39 and 41 will be offered a programme of vocational subjects.

iv. Students who achieve an average point score of between 42 and 44 will be offered a programme of 3AS/3A2 subjects (or equivalent).

v. Students who achieve an average point score of between 45 and 52 will be offered a programme of 4AS/3A2 subjects (or equivalent).

vi. Students who achieve an average point score of between 53 and 56 will be offered a programme of 4AS/4A2 subjects (or equivalent).

vii. Students who achieve an average point score of 57+ will be offered a programme of 5AS/5A2 subjects (or equivalent) on an exceptional basis only.

viii.Previous attendance should not demonstrate an average of less than 92% throughout Key Stage 4. Students in this category will be automatically placed on an attendance contract.

ix. Students not achieving at least a grade C in English and Mathematics will automatically have to re-sit these. This is non-negotiable and will affect the breadth of subjects on offer to them.

x. Evidence from the current school that the student could cope with at least 3 A2 Level courses, or equivalent.

We encourage our students to take part in all forms of sporting, musical and other activities. Relevant work experience is also an essential part of wider learning as are courses such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The student body collaborate well with each other and last year raised £6000 for our nominated charities: The Stroke Association and St Gemma’s Hospice.

When you join the Sixth Form @ Woodkirk Academy you too will have the opportunity to be involved with a number of charity fundraising days, mentoring opportunities and enrichment courses. We are keen to hear from you about what you would like to see in the future!

We have a truly exceptional Sixth Form Senior Council who serve as exceptional Ambassadors for the Academy. They take an active role in representing the student body, recruiting staff and attending local charitable events.
