All Through Academy Brochure“Achieving Success through Motivation, Knowledge and Skills”

Message from the Acting Chair of The Ridings’ Federation of Academies Trust and the Chief Executive Principal

On behalf of the Directors of The Ridings’ Federation of Academies Trust we would like to introduce you to our All Through Academy Brochure. This important document will provide you with information regarding the proposed All Through Academy in Yate.

The Federation has two Academies, Winterbourne International Academy and Yate International Academy. From September 2011 the Yate International Academy will incorporate Woodlands Primary School as the primary phase of the Federation’s first All Through Academy.

This is a unique opportunity to provide continuity of educational provision between the traditional primary and secondary phase. At the All Through Academy we aim to provide an exciting and dynamic world class education for all pupils and students. The education at the All Through Academy will be distinctive and able to meet the needs of all pupils and students, while raising aspirations and academic standards in pursuit of our aim to achieve excellence in everything we do.

Fundamental to the Federation’s approach is to bring an international dimension to the education of our children, ensuring that they are well prepared to meet the challenges of the global economy. The Federation and the Yate International Academy will expect that all pupils and students will be able to fulfil their potential to become active global citizens, making a positive contribution to society.

We hope you enjoy reading this All Through Academy brochure and look forward to welcoming our pupils and students to the All Through Academy on 1st September 2011.

Mr Chris Smith | Acting Chairman Dr Rob Gibson | Chief Executive Principal

Welcome to Yate International Academy - Woodlands Primary Phase

This has been an incredibly busy and exciting year at Woodlands Primary School. Not only have I had the pleasure to lead our school since January, we also have the exciting prospect of becoming part of an All Through Academy in Yate. We are pleased that the Secretary of State has agreed to this in principle and as such, staff have been working imaginatively and enthusiastically in order to start working towards the changes that are to come.

Recently I travelled with Mr Gilbert, Academy Principal and Mr Ball, Assistant Principal to look at the work of the Swindon All Through Academy, in order to help us develop our vision. It was lovely to see how the Primary Phase of this Academy had a strong role to play across the whole setting and how the entire community had been strengthened by this approach. We have also met with members of both Leadership Teams from Yate International Academy and Woodlands Primary School as well as Dr Gibson, Chief Executive Principal for The Ridings’ Federation, to develop a plan to support a smooth transition for the children in readiness for the opening of the All Through Academy in September 2011.

I am really looking forward to developing and improving the educational outcomes for all our children and anticipating how the resources will positively impact on learning. I have really enjoyed meeting many children at Yate International Academy, including former pupils of the primary school and it will be lovely to have the opportunity to see our children blossom and grow as they travel further through the Academy.

All staff are fully committed to making Yate International Academy a great learning environment for our community and we look forward to sharing the process as we move forward with this venture.

I feel both very proud and privileged to be writing in this first newsletter as Principal Designate for the first All Through Academy in South Gloucestershire.

The All Through Academy is the first of its kind in this area and is one that I believe is a significant step forward in providing the very best educational opportunities for the young people of Yate. As the Principal of Yate International Academy, I know that the progress that has been made in educational outcomes is because of a commitment to providing the very best we can for the students in our community. For the pupils and students of the future, providing continuity and progression throughout their schooling will have huge benefits.

There remains much work to be done in the coming weeks in order to ensure that we begin the new academic year in September in a strong position, drawing from the very best of both the Primary and Secondary phases for the benefit of our ‘new’ Academy. I am very pleased to be working with Mrs Hogan and can say that we share the same values, vision and ethos for this new venture.

Key priorities include the development of specialist teaching in the primary phase in subjects such as Modern Languages, ICT, PE and Music, particularly for Years 5 and 6. Planning this carefully into the curriculum will bring added benefits to Year 5 and 6 classes.

Other priorities over the next twelve months will include how the primary phase can benefit from the new build development. If parents and carers wish to learn more about the facilities and the innovative learning design of the new Yate International Academy building, we are having an Open Evening on Wednesday 6th July 2011 for parents/carers of primary school children. This starts at 6.00pm and I would hope to see many of you there.

It is our intention to produce one more newsletter prior to the end of this academic year and I hope to be able to share more news and developments with you then.

Yours sincerely

Mr Roger Gilbert All Through Academy Principal Designate

Yours sincerely

Mrs Julie Hogan Acting Head Teacher Woodlands Primary School

When designing the badges for the Academies, the designer was asked to create three logos in the form of a shield/coat of arms; one for each Academy and also for The Ridings’ Federation of Academies. Each shield therefore needed to reflect the following elements:

• The Federation

• The existing schools’ logos

• The Community

The design of the logos themselves follows general heraldic guidelines with respect to each element and colour, all of which have explicit meanings.

The shield is divided into three distinct parts, the Top (Chief), the Left hand side (Sinister) and the right hand side (Dexter). The left and right are reversed when the shield is viewed from the front; therefore, the right is left and left is right!

The Ridings’ Federation of Academies ShieldThe icons within the shield are known within heraldry as the ‘common charges’.

Top section (The Chief) – The ‘Key’ symbolises guardianship and power of authority, the ‘Book’ symbolises expression, Red signifies strength, determination and nobility, the Ink pen and inkwell are the art of writing and of learned and educated employments.

Bottom section – The ‘Chevronels’ in red and white (as appeared on the original shield for The Ridings High School) reflect both the old and new.

The Ridings’ Federation Yate International Academy ShieldThe Chief (Federation element) – The ‘Key’ symbolises guardianship and power of authority, the ‘Book’ symbolises expression, Red signifies strength, determination and nobility, the Ink pen and inkwell are the art of writing and of learned and educated employments.

The Dexter side (School element) – This section represents ‘The Yate International Academy’ by the use of the existing school ‘Lion’. In heraldry, the lion represents deathless courage and attitude. The black and yellow colours have also been retained.

Sinister side (Community element) – Oak leaves appear in the Yate Coat of Arms which originated from the stained glass window in St Mary’s Church which was ravaged by Cromwell. Acorns and leaves symbolises great age, strength and continuous growth in heraldry.

The Ridings’ Federation Yate International Academy - Woodlands Primary Phase ShieldThe Chief (Federation element) – The ‘Key’ symbolises guardianship and power of authority, the ‘Book’ symbolises expression, Red signifies strength, determination and nobility, the Ink pen and inkwell are the art of writing and of learned and educated employments.

The Dexter side (School element) – This section represents ‘The Yate International Academy’ by the use of the existing school ‘Lion’. In heraldry, the lion represents deathless courage and attitude. The black and yellow colours have also been retained.

Sinister side (Community element) – This section represents ‘The Woodlands Primary Phase’ through the use of the existing school ‘tree’. In heraldry, the tree represents continuous growth and knowledge. The red colour has also been retained.

Woodlands

As part of the proposed move to an All Through Academy, The Ridings’ Federation of Academies Trust will be introducing a uniform at the Woodlands Primary Phase consistent with the Yate International Academy, for all pupils to wear from 1st September 2011.

The uniform is designed to reinforce the ethos of the Federation and the All Through Academy whilst generating pride amongst pupils. It will also make a clear and recognisable statement to the local community about the aspirations for excellence at the All Through Academy.

The uniform will consist of the following:

Reception, Years 1 and 2• Navy Crew Neck Sweatshirt (with embroidered Academy Primary Phase logo)* - 2 to be provided

• White Polo Shirt*

• Grey Trousers (all students)

• Grey Skirt (girls)

• Grey Pinafore Dress (girls)

• Blue or Red Summer Dress (April to July)

Years 3 to 6• Navy V-neck Jumper (with embroidered Academy Primary Phase logo)*

• White Shirt*

• Navy/Gold striped tie (with Academy Primary Phase logo)*

• Grey Trousers (all students)

• Grey Skirt (girls)

• Blue or Red Summer Dress (April to July)

The Academy Trust recognises that a change in uniform brings with it financial implications for families. As a result, The Ridings’ Federation of Academies will support the Academy Primary Phase in providing, free of charge, the items marked with an asterisk (*) to all students in the relevant Year Group.

All items of uniform can be purchased from Any Sports in Yate, who can be found at 18 North Walk, Yate, Bristol, BS37 4AP. Parents/Carers will be able to pay weekly for uniform items in the lead up to September 2011, and collect from the store when full payment has been made.

It is also important to note that from September 2013, there will be an expectation for pupils in Years 3 to 6 to also wear an Academy Blazer.

The Academy Primary Phase badge has been designed to ensure that the identity with Woodlands and its community is retained while at the same time identifying with The Ridings’ Federation of Academies.

An ethos of ‘internationalism’ pervades the Federation and both Academies, emphasising the partnership between staff, students and parents, set within an international context, where students are prepared for their future as global citizens. Supporting the international ethos is a dynamic and responsive curriculum.

All students are offered the core National Curriculum, although both Academies will take full advantage of the curriculum flexibility and freedom to provide students with a personalised learning experience, within an international context. All students will also experience a range of different learning styles which will meet the needs of individual students and are appropriate to the courses they are studying.

New Build – September 2012

The redevelopment of Yate International Academy will not only raise the aspirations of its students and teachers – it will help engage the entire Yate community.

The new Academy build has been designed with a view to create a sustainable and close-knit environment, through the use of start-of-the-art facilities and a generous open-plan layout.

The Academy will revolve around its central “hub” – a spacious circular area featuring a large reception, learning resource centre and ICT rooms fitted with hi-tech plasma screens.

The three-storey building will feature zones for different subjects and a vocational centre with fully equipped hair and beauty salons, motor vehicle workshop and technology rooms.

Academy plans include a construction barn for outside use, a much improved dining area and a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) theatre seating 60 pupils for large classes and seminars. On the first floor will be a larger 240-seater auditorium and assembly hall. The first floor will also play host to a contemporary fitness suite and activity/dance studio

The 18-month development is currently in full-flow and on schedule. Whilst these are undoubtedly exciting times for the Academy, the safety and well-being of our students remain our priority and primary focus throughout. Fortunately, building works are taking place within an area detached from the main Academy site and so disruption to the students’ daily commitments is kept to a bare minimum.

Pupils from the Woodlands Primary phase will have numerous opportunities to take advantage of the new facilities at Yate International Academy and through initiation of the All Through Academy, will enjoy a smooth transition from primary to secondary phase.
