Speaking Out Against PredatorTargeting Sunnyside/Woodside

Van Bramer is working withthe NYPD at the 108th Precinct tosupport the full-scale investigationalready underway to capture thesuspect as soon as possible.

“Sunnyside and Woodside aresafe neighborhoods but one as-sault against women is one toomany. We will track down thiscowardly criminal and make surehe is punished and put away. Wemust be vigilant as a community asthe 108th precinct pursues leads inthe case and I will do all I can toassist the NYPD in getting thissexual predator off our streets,”said CM Van Bramer.

“One of the great things aboutSunnyside and Woodside is the

feeling of safety and communitythat people share. We are not goingto allow this predator to makewomen afraid in these or any othersections of Queens,” said SpeakerChristine C. Quinn. “We are ask-ing for the public’s help, if anyonesees anything or has any usefulinformation about these incidentswe want them to call the NYPD.”

“The women of our commu-nity should not have to walkthrough our neighborhoods in fearof being attacked,” said Rep. JoeCrowley. “I urge everyone to takea good look at the surveillancetape and contact the authorities ifyou recognize the suspect as wellas report any suspicious activity.

This is a time when our commu-nity can work together to helpensure our family, friends andneighbors are safe and to helpbring the person responsible forthese attacks to justice.”

Senator Michael Gianaris, who recently introduced legisla-tion to making groping of a childa felony requiring mandatory jailtime, said, “We must have zerotolerance for the recent rash ofgroping incidents in our neigh-borhoods. In addition to the pas-sage of my bill that would in-crease penalties for gropers, wemust band together as a commu-nity to keep our streets safe andfree from sexual predators.”

Funding Approved For TeenRoom At Woodside Library

On Tuesday, October 18th, CMJimmy Van Bramer was joined byTom Galante, CEO of the QueensLibrary, at the Woodside Libraryto announce $125,000 in capitalfunding that will be used for a newreading room for teens.

Teens are among the most avidlibrary-users. More than 80% ofteens visit their library each year.

By renovating the space and carv-ing out an area for young adults, the library becomes more efficientand welcoming to the teens andadult users.

“The Woodside Library andlibraries throughout the district andcity are extremely important asthey provide resources for research, safe, quiet spaces for studying, and

encourage literacy for all ages. Pro-viding funding for the teen readingroom will allow for necessary im-provements to this space and makesit even more appealing to teens. Iwill continue to support theWoodside Library to make certainit remains the vital resource it hasbeen for over 100 years,” saidCouncil Member Van Bramer.

This summer, the USPSrevealed that it was studying thepossibility of closing Grand Sta-tion and moving the services of-fered there to several other postoffices. Residents of Astoria re-sponded to the possible closurewith an outpouring of support. Allof the elected officials joined aletter opposing the closure (seebelow), and more than 1,000 resi-dents signed petitions which Con-gresswoman Maloney delivered tothe Postmaster. This week, theUSPS informed CongresswomanMaloney that it was removing

Grand Station from the list of postalfacilities being studied for pos-sible closure.

“For residents and busi-nesses, Grand Station providesvital services,” CongresswomanCarolyn Maloney said. “I thankthe Postal Service for hearingour concerns and keeping thisimportant community institu-tion open for business. Aboveall, I’d like to thank the count-less residents and business own-ers of Astoria who spoke out tosave their post office. This isreally a victory for them and theentire community.”

A great surprise was the personal visit of Dorothy Lewandowski, the Parks Depart-ment Queens Borough Commissioner who asked specifically for Frances Schmidt. Ms.Lewandowski said the club was doing a great job and every service to the parks wasappreciated. Next season they hope to take care of planting and sprucing up a few treeswith the help of the Parks Department.

It was cool and breezy weather with much camaraderie by all.

What Happened At TheOctober United 40’s Meeting?

At the October 13th meeting of the United40’s Civic Association, the enthusiasm andzeal of the first fiscal year meeting, (Sep-tember 8th) continued to expand further insize, scope and commitment to mission ob-jectives, a safe and secure, clean, high qual-ity of life community. A visit and greatpresentation by Queens District AttorneyRichard Brown was the highlight of thismeeting. He gave some comprehensivestatistics on, but not limited to, crimes com-mitted, arrests made, prosecutions and con-victions in Queens over the past years. JudgeBrown is proud of many accomplishmentsin his office-not the least of which is the“talented, bright capable staff” that work forhim (50 of the ADA’s are with him longerthan 10 years). At the top of his priorities for them is on-going “training, teaching, andcontinuing education.” The D.A.’s office had 1,300 applicants for 12 positions! Clearly,he and his associates are doing a number of things right. The community can be very proudof this man who is responsible for “Queens being the safest county in the city.” He thenoffered the D.A.’s office number (718) 286-6000 and the e-mail address: queensda@org.

The fetal blanket program with Elmhurst Hospital continues to go very well, with about40 new pieces donated by the United 40’s lady members, bringing the total to approximately300 blankets and hats.

To best tell the members how appreciated this program is United 40’s quoted a letterreceived from Elmhurst Hospital: “This letter is to thank you for the lovely blankets that youmake for Elmhurst Hospital Patients. If you knew how happy the blankets make ourpatients, you would know how proud we are of you for the lovely-work, dedication, andcraftsmanship involved to produce such beautiful blankets.

Thank you again from all the staff of Elmhurst Hospital Center, Women and Children’sDivision. “ (Karen Lockworth, Director-Women & Children’s Division)

Ed Babor from Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney’s office, San Vargas from NYSAssemblywoman Catherine Nolan’s office and Joe Kenton from Councilman Jimmy VanBramer’s office spoke of the plan to change the 43St. playground, a/k/a L.CPL ThomasNoonan Park. He encouraged all to participate in the park design and to use the suggestionbox he brought to the meeting.

President Jerry Bamberger and Ira Glener are planning a celebration to mark the openingof the new synagogue on 42 Street. Date and time to be announced. Great news for ourJewish Community. Sunnyside Tasted So Good, Twice!Walking around the plethora of food choices was pure heaven this past Tuesday evening at SunnysideCommunity Services, joining an outpouring of community members who purchased tickets for the

Taste of Sunnyside 2.Both the 5:30 and 7:30 tastings were sold out due to the hard work of the many organizations

and businesses involved in orchestrating this spectacular, local event. Some of these behind thescenes people that should be mentioned, are Sunnyside Chamber of CommercePresident, Rebecca Barker and Chamber VP Patricia Dorfman, as well as SunnysideShines BID treasurer Artie Weiner, the BID’s Executive Director James Bray and BIDBoard Member Patrice Lee. Restaurant owners Tim Chen of Quaint Restaurant and

Ramiro Mendez of de Mole, not only represented their food at the event, but played anintegral part in the events conception.

Numerous diverse smells wafted through the air, almost leading each attendee in a trance-likestate to each of the 20 vendor’s tables. A slow, crowded walk past the restaurant tables not onlyoffered a taste of the world, but showed just how diverse our area restaurants have become.Whatever you’re craving, you can find it in Sunnyside/Woodside. And the Taste Of Sunnyside 2proved exactly that. Crowds of enthusiastic eaters had you maintaining focus on your positionin line while battling shoulders and elbows of passerby’s as you guarded your dish. With thepassing of each table, you wondered just how much more you could eat, as the next table tempted

you. Not a single person left less than stuffed. Some restaurants were enjoyed so much that they hadto refill their offerings several times.

It was hard to attempt to choose which was best… they all tasted delicious. There was certainly enoughfood to please every person’s palette and entice every taste bud. Each restaurant represented themselveswith their own special dish presentation, dressed in restaurant uniforms and served their dishes with thehospitality you would have gotten, had you been in their establishment.

It was a true pleasure to sample each and every bite that Taste 2 had to offer. The hundreds of people thatattended are anxiously waiting to mark their calendars for Taste of Sunnyside 3!
