Page 2 2014 SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Last Friday our school held the annual

swimming carnival at Corrimal pool. It

was a terrific carnival thanks to all the

students and staff who participated in

the events. The school house spirit was

fantastic. It was great to listen to all our

house war cries and watch our

swimmers in the pool. Successful

students will participate in the Northern

Zone carnival at Corrimal pool on Friday.

The Age champions were:

12 years Angus Smart Zara Sharman

13 years Michael Usher Bronte Sweeny

14 years Brent Yates Jessica Ayrton

15 years Cooper Rostirolla Phoebe Basham

16 years William Gilmour Bryanna Amaru

17 years Connor Basham Sheridan Brown

18 years James Walker Ellie Yates

As can be seen from the photos many students engaged in the house spirit with colourful clothing and props. The atmosphere was fantastic and all enjoyed the day whether competing in swimming events or supporting their fellow house mates.

Many of our teaching staff also got into the spirit of the day

by competing in events and dressing to support their house.

The staff competed in races against each other and then took

part in a staff v’s student relay race. Staff won the event

(amidst claims of cheating by students) swimming unaided,

unlike some students who thought that their flippers and flo-

tation devices would not be noticed or illegal.

YEAR 11 BIOLOGY MINNAMURRA FIELD TRIP

On Tuesday, February 11th Year 11 Biology left the confines of their regular Science laboratory to venture out into the wild and

complete a field study of a mangrove ecosystem at Minnamurra River.

The yearly expedition had students working alongside staff from the Illawarra Environmental Research Centre to learn more about field Biology in the working world and what a career in Biology could potentially entail. After learning the basics of species identification and distribution, the students conducted quadrat sampling of biodiversity in the area and collected data on abiotic and biotic factors along a 20 metre transect of the intertidal zone. Once the hard work was completed and all the data had been collated, the students then had an opportunity to try and find some of the larger animals in the ecosystem using a range of tools including scoop nets, waders, nipper pumps and fishing rods. The students managed to catch a huge range of critters including soldier crabs, nippers, fish and even squid. Brittany Clark proved to be a natural with a scoop net and Connor Basham looked to be the happiest man on Earth when his tireless efforts with the nipper pump finally netted him a sizeable catch. The class thoroughly enjoyed watching Chloe Apps very carefully step into a pair of waders bigger than herself, while seasoned veteran Luke Dawson taught everyone the finer points of nipper pumping. The data collected from the excursion will now be used by the Year 11 Biology students to create an in depth analysis of the health and diversity of the mangroves at Minnamurra river. It was a fantastic excursion, with the Biology class all showing great enthusiasm and representing the school with enthusiasm and pride. Our guide, Garth, from the Illawarra Environmental Education Centre did an amazing job helping all of the young Biologists gain a deep understanding of the ecosystem while keeping the activities fun and interesting. I think it’s safe to say that the future of Australian Biology is in good hands! Mr Wilson Class Teacher

THE 2013 WOONONA HIGH SCHOOL SURFING CONTEST

The 2013 Woonona High School surfing contest was held in small but excellent conditions at Woonona Beach on the students’ last day of school in 2013. Thirty students took part in the contest with each student getting about 3 surfs on the day. The pictures tell the story. Congratulations and thank you to all students and staff who took part.

Special thanks again to Mr. Bradley for producing the spectacular trophies.

The Pines Surf School again loaned us Learn to Surf Boards for the Learn to Surf Competition and donated three free lessons for the Learn to Surf Competition winner. We are extremely grateful for their continued excellent support for all aspects of our surfing programs.

Dear Parents,

Please be reminded that care must be taken when dropping

off and picking up children from school.

Unfortunately many students ignore road rules and often

don’t hear cars approaching

(mainly due to ipods, and mobile

phones). This can be especially

dangerous at peak times (mornings

from about 8pm and straight after

school).

THE HOMEWORK LEARNING CENTRE

The Homework Learning Centre is open in the school Library

every Tuesday from 3pm to 4.30pm.

Specialised teachers are on hand to help students and a light

afternoon tea is provided. This is an excellent opportunity

for students to use the school resources and teacher’s

expertise to complete homework, assignments and study

notes.

UPCOMING YEAR 7 ENGLISH EXCURSION

Year 7 students have been given the opportunity to go to the

Illawarra Performing Arts Centre to see a performance of

“Wulamanayuwi and the Seven Pamanui” By Jason de

Santis. This show has been described as “A feast of colour,

myth and magic from the Tiwi Islands.”

This surprise hit of the 2011 Darwin Festival is being

acclaimed by audiences of all ages as it makes its way around

the country on a national tour. Mixing the enchanting

tradition of European fairytale with Creation characters and

stories, Wulamanayuwi and the Seven Pamanui brings a very

Tiwi twist to a much-loved Brothers Grimm tale; a modern

and layered Aboriginal fairytale that will satisfy audiences

young and old!

As well as a great show, this performance in relevant to the

Year 7 English syllabus. This year students will study Myths

and Legends from around the world, and also Fairytales in

film. The excursion will take place on Thursday 20th March.

Students have received a permission note from their English

teacher, but are advised to get in quick with payment (to the

front office) as places are limited.

As mentioned in last fortnights bulletin, all students at WHS

have been issued with a school diary. Students are required to

have and use the diary each period and diaries are being

checked each week by roll call teachers and Year Advisers.

An important reminder to parents—The school diary is an

important way for teachers and parents / carers to

communicate and for parents / carers to be informed of what

is expected of their child in each lesson (homework,

assignments, notes etc). Parents are asked to check their

childs diary, include any comments and sign at the bottom of

the page. This will reinforce to students the importance of

having and using the diary every lesson.

CAREERS

Welcome back for another year at Woonona High School. The first term of the year is very busy in the Careers Office (all terms are really). The most pleasurable and interesting task at this time of year is to find out what the Higher School Certificate (HSC) students of 2013 are up to now. The results of this survey are published right. I want to remind all students and parents that the Careers Office is a resource for you. I will make contact with you through the Department of Education email, woononahighcareers.com, my notice board and assemblies. I am in my office every lunch and recess that I am not on duty or in a meeting. My timetable is posted on the notice board as well. YEAR 10

This year we have an exciting Careers Program lined up for Year 10. Our entire program is designed to assist students to identify career pathways suited for each individual in order that they can set goals and choose appropriate courses for their senior years. Year 10 will get to sit Career inventories this term in small groups with the Careers Adviser. In Term 2, they will visit the Illawarra Coal Careers Expo. In Term 3, students will construct job portfolios and choose their Year 11 courses. Finally, in Term 4, all students will undergo work readiness training and participate in one week’s Work Experience. During the year, we will also visit UOW and TAFE Illawarra and participate in a financial management workshop. HSC 2013 DESTINATIONS

This year has been extremely satisfying to contact the former students and hear their tales. After many hours on the phone only 4 of our 91 strong HSC cohort were unreachable. In light of this, the following statistics are based on the students that have been contacted. Sixty four percent of Woonona High School’s 2013 HSC students are enrolled in tertiary education. The University of Wollongong (UOW) is by far the institution that attracts the most of our students due to their excellence in education, fantastic reputation, location and as a result of the magnificent links they forge with the local community. Forty percent of our 2013 cohort is enrolled at UOW. However, we also have two students enrolled at the Australian Defence Force Academy, one at the University of Technology Sydney and another doing a Bachelor’s Degree at the Australian Institute of Music. Fifteen percent of the cohort is enrolled at TAFE. This number is down a bit but is easily explained by the tremendous upsurge in university enrolments. Private colleges account for another three percent of our 2013 graduates.

Delivering excellence, innovation, opportunity and student success

HSC 2013 at a Glance

University 46% TAFE 15% Private Colleges 3.5% Apprenticeships 10% Traineeships 6% Full time employed 8% Part time employed 3.5% Casual employed 3.5% Gap year travel 3%

In the work force; 10% of the class of 2013 are employed as apprentices and 6% as trainees. Another 8% are also engaged in full time jobs. 7% of the cohort is working in part time or casual jobs. Finally, 3% of students are enjoying a gap year in order to travel. Overall, I believe these are terrific out comes for the HSC class of 2013. This is a credit to the students and their families as well as all the hard work our dedicated staff do to assist our students in identifying and pursuing their dreams. Year 12 UOW Discovery Day

On 3 February, 35 Year 12 students caught a bus to the University of Wollongong (UOW) to attend Discovery Day 2014. At UOW, they experienced a day in the life of a uni student. Students toured the university and attended real lectures provided by UOW academics. They also got to rock out to the sounds of a DJ while enjoying their lunch at the student centre. All feed back from students was positive about the day.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

It was great to meet some parents at the Year 7 Meet and Greet on the 18th – lovely to put some faces to names, and share a bit about what I do at school, particularly with parents of Yr 7 girls about Girl Talk. If any parents missed out on coming and have any questions, just give me a call at school on Tuesdays or Thursdays, or leave a message other days and I will return the call. The last couple of weeks in Girl Talk we have been focused on Body Image – all the pressures that come to us in our culture to look a certain way. We have been pushing back on that, and talking about finding our own style, being kind to each other about how we look, appreciating our bodies for what they can do, and focusing on the positives. Body Image concerns are something that can affect men and women, boys and girls of all ages. There are some great places out there to seek help, like headspace (http://www.headspace.org.au/) and ReachOut (http://au.reachout.com/). I would recommend either of these websites for students and parents/carers to have a look at. All the best, Rowan Keyzer School Chaplain (at school Tuesdays and Thursdays)

LIBRARY NEWS

MANGA / ANIME CLUB

The Manga / Anime club is becoming very popular at Woonona High School. Ten new students joined the club, bringing our total membership to thirty one. In fact, it has become so successful that we now have had to form a waiting list.

This week Jesse Marton spoke about the Manga novels Blue Exorcist. The story revolves around Rin Okumura, a teenager who discovers he is the son of a demon and stands to inherit his father’s powers. When his father kills Rin's guardian, Rin decides to become an exorcist in order to defeat him.

New member Julia Tovey imitates “Zoe” a character from Mew Mew Power series.

range of tests and exercises before they were then tested with a variety of traditional methods of relaxation.

Reading worked best, reducing stress levels by 68 per cent, said cognitive neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis. Subjects only needed to read, silently, for six minutes to slow down the heart rate and ease tension in the muscles, he found. In fact it got subjects to stress levels lower than before they started.

"It really doesn't matter what book you read, by losing yourself in a thoroughly engrossing book you can escape from the worries and stresses of the everyday world and spend a while exploring the domain of the author's imagination.

"This is more than merely a distraction but an active engaging of the imagination as the words on the printed page stimulate your creativity and cause you to enter what is essentially an altered state of consciousness."

Mrs Roddis Teacher Librarian

Reading is the best way to relax and even six minutes can be enough to reduce the stress levels by more than two thirds, according to research by the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom.

And it works better and faster than other methods to calm frazzled nerves such as listening to music, going for a walk or settling down with a cup of tea, research found. Psychologists believe this is because the human mind has to concentrate on reading and the distraction of being taken into a literary world eases the tensions in muscles and the heart.

Their stress levels and heart rate were increased through a

TEENS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

FACTS:

Sleep is vital to your well-being, as important as the air you breathe, the water you drink and the food you eat. It can even help you to eat better and manage the stress of being a teen.

Sleep is food for the brain. During sleep, important body functions and brain activity occur.

Biological sleep patterns shift toward later times for both sleeping and waking during adolescence -- meaning it is natural to not be able to fall asleep until late evening.

Teens need about 9 1/4 hours of sleep each night to function best (for some, 8 1/2 hours is enough). Most teens do not get enough sleep — one study found that only 15% reported sleeping 8 1/2 hours on school nights.

Teens tend to have irregular sleep patterns across the week — they typically stay up late and sleep in late on the weekends, which can affect their biological clocks and hurt the quality of their sleep.

CONSEQUENCES: Not getting enough sleep or having sleep difficulties can:

Limit your ability to learn, listen, concentrate and solve problems. You may even forget important information like names, numbers, your homework or a date with a special person in your life;

Make you more prone to pimples. Lack of sleep can contribute to acne and other skin problems;

Lead to aggressive or inappropriate behaviour such as yelling at your friends or being impatient with your teachers or family members;

Cause you to eat too much or eat unhealthy foods like sweets and fried foods that lead to weight gain;

Possibly increase use of caffeine and nicotine; and

Contribute to illness, not using equipment safely or drowsy driving.

SOLUTIONS:

Make your room a sleep haven. Keep it cool, quiet and dark. If you need to, get eyeshades or blockout curtains. Let in bright light in the morning to signal your body to wake up.

No pills, vitamins or drinks can replace good sleep. Consuming caffeine close to bedtime can hurt your sleep, so avoid coffee, tea, energy drinks, soft drinks and chocolate late in the day so you can get to sleep at night. Nicotine and alcohol will also interfere with your sleep.

Establish a bed and wake-time and stick to it, coming as close as you can on the weekends. A consistent sleep schedule will help you feel less tired since it allows your body to get in sync with its natural patterns. You will find that it’s easier to fall asleep at bedtime with this type of routine.

Delivering excellence, innovation, opportunity and student success

Don’t eat, drink, or exercise within a few hours of your bedtime. Don’t leave your homework for the last mi-nute. Try to avoid the TV, computer and telephone in the hour before you go to bed. Stick to quiet, calm activities, and you’ll fall asleep much more easily!

If you do the same things every night before you go to sleep, you teach your body the signals that it’s time for bed. Try taking a bath or shower (this will leave you extra time in the morning), or reading a book.

Try keeping a diary or to-do lists. If you jot notes down before you go to sleep, you’ll be less likely to stay awake worrying or stressing.
