“Word Power! More Power to You!” n PROGRAM OVERVIEW This program can be used as a unit or can be adapted into a year-long project to increase one of the 5 pillars of reading – vocabulary. It is an integrated technology /vocabulary building unit. The students use the vocabulary from their weekly class story. Students select one word from the list to use in creating a PowerPoint slide. Before sitting down at the computer, the student writes the definition of the word, writes a complex sentence using the word that shows their understanding of the word’s meaning. They illustrate their sentence. (CUDD strategy). Once they have completed these steps, they begin creating their PowerPoint vocabulary slide using the paper copy as a reference. n DIRECTIONS Student Task Description

You have just graduated from college. Congratulations! Now you are going to be a teacher. You will be teaching the vocabulary for all the stories in Theme 3: Friends to Grow With. You will need to design PowerPoint vocabulary slides to present to your students.

Student Steps1. Introduce vocabulary – tell students

that they are going to learn 6 new words that they will see again when they read “The Stories Julian Tells” in their homeroom and in “A New Best Friend” in our class.

2. Use these suggestions to give meaning or context to the vocab. words listed on page 108 of the Intervention Teachers’ Guide.

3. Teacher will demonstrate how to open a PowerPoint document, how to insert a new slide, add the title (vocab. word) to the slide, and search for internet clip art to insert in slide. If student would prefer to illustrate the word – show them how to scan the picture into a PDF file and save. Demonstrate how to add a subtitle to slide (word in the context of a sentence). How to apply background color to the slide. Demonstrate how to modify a font’s size and color.

4. Students will write a rough draft of their vocabulary sentence. The teacher reviews the rough draft and has the student edit if needed.

5. Students will create their own PowerPoint Slide.

6. Periodically, have students self – assess their slides using the attached slide rubric

Teacher DirectionsDisplay the vocab. words written on

sentence strips. Discuss the meaning of the words. Ask students to choose one word that will be used in their PowerPoint slide.

2008 - 2009 Idea Catalog of exCellenCe

Teacher will send a file attachment of the PowerPoint slides to the homeroom teacher to share with class. Homeroom teacher will project the PowerPoint presentation and allow the student who created it to present the slide to the class.

n EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT On a weekly basis, we will monitor

their scores on the vocabulary portion of their weekly Trophies assessment.

We will analyze the data on the Kaplan score report under the topic words and phrases in context.

“Word Power! More Power to You” Karen Reece & Amy TillLesson Plan No 3: Coyote Places the Stars – 3rd Grade Harcourt Story

n DIRECTIONS Student Task Description

You have learned how to create PowerPoint slides. Today I will help you select one word from this week’s vocabulary list for the story “Coyote Places the Stars”. You will create on a sheet of paper the word in the center of the page. You will need to write a sentence using the word, illustrate the word, write the definition of the word. When this is completed we will move to the computers.

Student Steps1. Introduce vocabulary – tell students

that they are going to learn 6 new words that they will see again when they read “Coyote Places the Stars” in their homeroom and “Many Moons Ago” in our class.

2. Use these suggestions to give meaning or context to the vocab. words listed on page 168 of the Intervention Teachers’ Guide.

3. Teacher will demonstrate how to open a PowerPoint document, how to insert a new slide, add the title (vocab. word) to the slide, and search for internet clip art to insert in slide. If student would prefer to illustrate the word- show them how to scan the picture into a PDF file and save. Demonstrate how to add a subtitle to slide (word in the context of a sentence). Assessment & Assessment ProceduresPrior to the beginning of the unit we created an Excel

document that serves as a checklist / pretest for all the vocabulary words in the unit. We administer the pretest individually to each student in our reading groups. We determine if they can read the word and give an example or explanation of their meanings. Next, we print out and analyze their Kaplan scores related to words and phrases in context.

Finally, to determine their current technology skills and to record progress, we administer a radar chart to determine what they already know about PowerPoint.

During the unit, we check for understanding by conferencing with students on the sentences and slides they have created. Using the PowerPoint rubric, students self-assess. We also give them feedback on how to improve the quality. Once

they have created all the slides for the week, I email them as an attachment to their classroom teachers. The classroom teacher shows the slides to the entire class as review. In doing this, it gives the students a sense of pride to show off their work to their classmates. It gives them an audience and a purpose for creating quality slides.

This program has been implemented with our 3rd grade reading groups. These students are all on ASP’s with goals related to improving their reading ability. This program could be used with small groups, depending on how many classroom computers there are available for student use. It could also be completed by an entire classroom by either rotating through centers to complete the slides or doing them in a computer lab setting.
