I am pleased you have chosen to continue learning such a useful and fun language and I look forward to sharing with you my love for Spanish as Spanish is my first language. Be sure to study the vocabulary and grammar at least 20 minutes each day. While Spanish 2 is a building block of Spanish 1, the grammar will be heavy and intense, thus requiring more study time to grasp. Finally, as we travel through each unit, we will continue to learn about the Spanish culture through music, stories, festivities and distinctive ethnic foods. I encourage all students of other cultures to share their festivities and values with their classmates. We are all here to learn, grow and embrace our diversity in a respectful manner. General course description: Students will continue to develop communication skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) in Spanish. Students are offered insight into the culture and civilization of the countries where the language is spoken and are encouraged to have a positive attitude toward language learning. Projects will be assigned throughout the year, focusing on the language, culture, and current events. LANGUAGE LAB – Practicing your speaking abilities: As a way to incorporate additional learning, students in my class will visit the Language Lab weekly to practice and improve their speaking abilities. Students will be given impromptu real world scenarios requiring them to think and speak in the target language. While this can be stressful at first, most students begin to enjoy and look forward to this weekly activity as a way to compare and contrast their language acquisition. FOR THIS COURSE: Students are required to have a Composition Notebook where they will write their daily practice aka “Primera Práctica”, a three-ring binder with 2 dividers - notes & handouts and loose-leaf notebook paper – PLEASE DO NOT BRING TO CLASS BOUND PERFORATED PAPER WHICH NEEDS TO BE TORN WHEN HANDING-IN WORK. TEARING THESE SHEETS LEAVE BITS OF PAPER EMBEDDED IN THE CARPET, MAKING IT AN IMPOSSIBLE MESS TO CLEAN UP. Therefore, WORK WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED ON LOOSE-LEAF PAPER. SUPPLIES STUDENTS WILL NEED: *Composition Notebook for “Primera Práctica” *3-Ring Binder with 2 dividers (notes & handouts) *Loose-Leaf paper *No. 2 pencils *Highlighter *Color Pencils or Markers *Pens (blue, black) *Spanish-English dictionary. These materials are in addition to the text book & workbook. *** All materials for this class need to be brought to class everyday (Text, Workbook, Composition Notebook, loose paper) – students WILL NOT be permitted to go back to their locker. Everyone must come to class PREPARED – NO EXCEPTIONS. Attendance: The BTHS attendance/tardy policy will be followed. Cell Phones: Cell phone use is prohibited in my class. I do not wish to see phones inside back pockets or any pockets for that matter. Your cell phone must be placed inside your backpack as soon as you come in my class and your backpack needs to be placed in the back of the classroom. Anyone breaking this rule will have their phone confiscated by me. To retrieve it, you will need to see the Dean after school. While I am somewhat flexible on some things, this is not one of them. PARENTAL PERMISSION FORM FOR

STUDENTS TO VIEW PG/PG-13 MOVIES & or

DOCUMENTARIES

2015-16 Academic Year

Dear Parents,

With your permission, I would like to have my students view movies that are directly tied to the content and/or unit that we are covering as a way to augment the curriculum and rigors of Spanish 2 (time permitting). An example of such material is the Academy Award nominated documentary “Balseros”– PG which highlights the story of Cuban refugees and their families who risked their lives to venture toward American shores, during Bill Clinton’s presidency. This particular documentary also addresses a dynamic changing culture under oppression and communism, immigration policies, the need for reform and human conditions which are all linked to the unit covering Miami. As I mentioned, these movies/documentaries will be utilized for instructional purposes to deepen the student’s understanding of culture and social issues within the countries that are being covered in the text book. Thank you for considering my request. Sincerely,

Sra. Ofelia M. Hampton, Spanish 2 & Honors Spanish 3 World Language Dept. Chair Spanish Honor Society sponsor Bartram Trail High School
