D a t e ( C o l o r o f b o x e s / b o r d e r s t o m a t c h c o v e r )1 2 J u n e 2 0 1 6Friends, The past week has been an exciting and joy-filled week for the Archdiocese of Boston. Pope Francis has changed the future of three of our Diocesan priests and friends. The Holy Father has assigned all three to new responsibilities in the Diocese and the Universal Church. Last Friday afternoon at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Fr. Gerry and I were pleased to be present and pray for Monsignor Paul Russell. Monsignor Russell is a Boston priest and has served for many years in the Diplomatic Corp of the Vatican City State. He has been assigned to many posts throughout the world. Last Friday he was ordained an Archbishop at the Cathedral by Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Archbishop Alan Vigneron of Detroit and Archbishop Leo
Cushley of Edinburgh Scotland. Archbishop Russell will serve the Church as the Papal Nuncio (Ambassador) to Turkey. That is not an easy assignment at all as that part of the world is so unsettled and in conflict. Please pray for Archbishop Russell as he begins his new and challenging ministry. That same day it was announced that two other Boston priests had been elevated to the Episcopacy as Auxiliary Bishops here in Boston. Fr. Bob Reed is quite familiar to many across the Diocese and beyond because he is the face of Catholic TV. Under Fr. Reed’s leadership Catholic TV has grown to be a national TV station for Catholics across the country. Our elderly and shut-ins certainly know him from watching the broadcast of daily mass and praying of the rosary. Fr. Mark
O’Connell was also named a Bishop by Pope Francis last week. Bishop-elect O’Connell has been in charge of the Diocesan Tribunal for several years and is well liked and respected by all the priests of the Archdiocese. The two new Bishops will be ordained at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on August 24th, the Feast of St. Bartholomew. Please pray for them both as they begin their new ministry here in Boston. As we celebrate the elevation of these three fine priests it is a good reminder to all of us to continue to pray for an increase of vocations, especially to the Diocesan priesthood. Have a great week and be assured that you, your family and all those whom you love are remembered in my prayers.
Father Steve

Come join us as we discuss this letter and brainstorm how we can be more like Christ in South Boston. You can find the letter at: http.www.cardinalseansblog.org/yearofmercy/

O my God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good,
I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance,
to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suf fered and died for us.
In his name, my God, have mercy.
Amen.
Act of Contrition In today’s Gospel we are reminded that Jesus always grants forgiveness to those who are truly sorry. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation we offer the Act of the Contrition to make this sorrow known. However, it is a prayer we can say any time we fail or forget to love.

The Pilot is an important voice in the public square that brings you the Catholic perspective on current events.
Inspired by the vision of our publisher, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, The Pilot covers it all — from in-depth reporting on Pope Francis to the good works of Boston parishes.
Each week, The Pilot brings you the stories of Boston Catholics who bring the Works of Mercy to life on a daily basis.
Proclaiming the present Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said he wants to make it evident that the Church’s mission is to be a witness of compassion. “Let us not forget that God forgives and God forgives always,” Pope Francis said. “Let us never tire of asking for forgiveness.”
We invite you to join the Pilot readership today for only $19.95. This limited-time offer saves you 49% off the regular subscription rate. Thank you for your support.
