Germany and the Nazi PartyIn the 1930s, Germany was poor because of the Great Depression and because of money that they had to pay because of the Treaty of Versailles.
The Nazi Party believed that the Treaty of Versailles was really wrong and unfair.
Germany elected Adolf Hitler - Hitler said he would change everything! He said he would make Germany strong again.
He had a lot of nationalism and made other people think the same way.

The Nazi Germans thought they deserved more land and power. They had a lot of NATIONALISM!
They built up their army - MILITARISM.
They started to take over other countries in Europe - IMPERIALISM. This started World War II.
JapanOn the other side of the world, Japan had a lot of nationalism too.
They started building up their army - militarism.
They took over land in China and all over the pacific - imperialism.
Japan and Germany were allies! They were part of the Axis Powers
Allied and Axis PowersThe two sides of the war were the Allied Powers (France, Great Britain, Soviet Union, New Zealand, and Australia) and the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, and Japan). The Allied Powers tried to appease Germany.
Adolf Hitler was the leader of the Nazi party in Germany and ultimately started World War II by invading Poland.

The U.S. was neutral in World War II until 1941.
Before that, Roosevelt and the U.S. were isolationists.
The opportunity cost was too big for the U.S. to enter the war.

Japan Attacks!
On December 7, 1941, the Japan airforce attacks a large naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
12 warships, 188 airplanes were destroyed.
2,000 people died during the Japanese attack.
The attack was a complete surprise!

The Japanese used Kamikazes.
Kamikazes are pilots that kill themselves to kill a lot of their enemies.
They would dive bomb into navy boats.

President Roosevelt and Congress had no choice but to declare war on the Axis Powers.
The U.S. joined the Allied Powers.
The U.S. joined the war on December 7, 1941.

A lot of the factories that closed during the Great Depression had to reopen!
The factories had to make supplies for the war so businesses started to become busy once again.
The Great Depression really ended with the start of World War II!
But who was going to work in the factories?
Women in the War
Women made all sorts of things for the war:
weapons, tanks, airplanes, boats, canned foods, clothing, medical supplies and much more!

The U.S. needed the women to work in order to win the war!
How did the U.S. Government and businesses get the word out that women were needed to help out in factories and the war effort?

The most famous piece of propaganda from World War II is of “Rosie the Riveter”
Rosie the Riveter was this strong lady on advertisements who talked women into helping out in the war effort.

The Home Front
Like in World War I, people living in the U.S. during the war had to ration, or limit the amount of food they ate, so they could save some and send it to the troops who were fighting in the war.

Propaganda was used to get people to conserve gasoline and rubber.
Why would they need to conserve (save) gasoline and rubber.
Culture
Culture was also changing in the 1940’s.
World War II was the first time, an African American group flew fighter jets in a war.
This group was known as the Tuskegee Airmen. They were based out of Tuskegee Alabama!

The Tuskegee Airmen showed the world just how great African Americans can be, even in a time of Jim Crow Laws!

Women played a big role in World War II by working in factories on the home front.
