Start of the War• 9-1-1939: Germany invaded Poland
– Blitzkrieg = lightning war– Low countries & France fall by June 1940
• Japan has taken over Manchuria moving to knock-out US
• Battle of Britain: aerial defense of England by RAF keeps Britain alive– The Blitz destroys much of London . . .
• Germans are eventually driven back across N. Afrika
Turning Points• Stalingrad: USSR defeats Nazis in a 9
month horror (could have been the end)• D-day landings: Beaches of Normandy
are invaded by Allied forces– Beginning of the last final push

Concluding the War• Hitler kills himself as Soviets take the city of
Berlin (Eisenhower let them take it)• A-bombs and Soviet threats knock Japan
out of the war• USSR is clearly a
threat and is not ableto be trusted (Cold War begins)
Impact of the Cold War• Polarized War: America v. USSR
– Both create alliances NATO v. Warsaw Pact• Containment: stop the spread of
communism throughout the world (Truman Doctrine)
