Message from Fr. Dave

Around the Archdiocese

The Vatican Council in 1963 tells us: “It is the wish of the church to undertake a careful, general reform of

the liturgy in order that the Christian people may be more certain to derive an abundance of graces from it. For the liturgy

is made up of unchangeable elements divinely instituted, and of elements subject to change. These latter not only may be

changed but ought to be changed with the passage of time, if they have suffered from the intrusion of anything out of

harmony with the inner nature of the liturgy or have become less suitable. In this renewal, both texts and rites should be

ordered so as to express more clearly the Holy things which they signify. The Christian people should be able to

understand them easily and take part in them in a celebration which is full, active and the communities’ own.”

Having said that Pope Paul VI in 1970 approved the following: “when supper was ended Jesus took the cup and

He gave thanks.” In Greek and Latin the word used suggests a larger ceremonial vessel often used for religious rites, but

the New Testament authors choose the normal term for an ordinary drinking cup in daily life. The Last Supper was a

Passover meal and the vessel used was an ordinary drinking cup. It would not have been an ornate, fancy, golden

Chalice. Look at the beloved 23rd Psalm “My Cup Overflows” or should it be “My Chalice Overflows?” Matthew 10:42

Jesus says: “and whoever gives a cup of cold water to one of these.” How about giving a Chalice of cold water?

Ordinary drinking vessel is the key. And Chalice does not convey that to me. The words of Jesus shape the context of

our Eucharist today as He sends His disciples to find a place where they may eat the Passover. As you may know at

Passover there were prayers and blessings over four cups of wine: two drunk before the meal and two drunk after the

meal. The third cup was the: “Cup of Blessing” and is the cup is our Eucharistic prayer. St. Paul notes in 1Corinithans

11:24 that it was “after the meal” and this has become our Cup of Eucharist. This is why our children have a blessing cup

for First Communion. To call this a Chalice disguises what Jesus is doing here. What Vatican II achieved was a renewed

focus on Holy Scripture in the Eucharist. To introduce the English word Chalice at the most significant moment of the

Mass seems to obscure the original Biblical and Historical context of the event and distances Jesus from His disciples and

we are the disciples today. Jesus was a Jewish layman using the drinking cups of the world around Him.

Some folks are probably happy with our new English Missal although I am not seeing them. No, I have not done

any surveys and I do not want to sound too critical but I am convinced the “translators” (no one seems to know who they

are) “have not expressed more clearly the Holy things which they signify.” Many Catholics who fill our pews and our

collection baskets Sunday after Sunday are asking: Why? Whose idea was this? Who said it would improve our prayer

life? Who thought this was a good idea when the church today has many more pressing issues to deal with? Who

authorized the massive expenditure of money that was required to do all of this? I think many Catholic people have simply

shrugged their shoulders and gone along with the new program. An informal and unscientific survey recently indicates that

70% of those who responded have a negative or strongly negative reaction to our new English Missal.

So the question is, can our Bishops begin to talk about some modifications: correcting the flaws in the new Missal,

the errors in translation, grammatical problems and theological peculiarities. Could our Bishops begin to engage scholars,

liturgists and poets in a conversation about the art of translation and the principles that should govern it? Can they talk

about how to treasure our long tradition while also treasuring the great break-through of the Vatican II, which called not just

for a translated liturgy but for a vernacular liturgy. Instead of griping in private, can we talk openly and honestly about the

texts that we have been given? When we come to Sunday Mass can we talk about what works well in the new translation

and what does not? Can we talk about what contributes to our prayer and what gets in the way? Can we even talk about

the beautiful 1998 translation of the Missal which was the product of seventeen years of labor by professional men and

women of the church? And all this labor has been eliminated. If we do not talk about this, people will begin to simply tune

out the text when they realize how much effort is required to make sense of them and I think for many, this has already

happened. Another option which we really do not need or want, is to develop a kind of liturgical free-for-all in which the

Celebrants at Mass change the words to fit their comfort level and this too I believe is already happening to some degree.
