This Tuesday, February 11th, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is designated as World Day of the Sick. The Anointing of the Sick is a sacra-ment instituted

by God in Sacred Scripture in the Book of James: "Are there any who are sick among you? Let them send for the priests of the Church, and let the priests pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick persons, and the Lord will raise them up; and if they have committed any sins, their sins will be forgiven." (James 5:14). The Anointing of the Sick (sometimes referred to as "Last Rites" or “The Sacrament of the Sick”) is giv-en to those who begin "to be in danger (of death) due to sickness or old age." In case of doubt about whether the cir-cumstances warrant the sacrament, the sacrament is to be administered.

We receive many calls at St. Pius X to provide this sacrament, whether it be someone preparing for a medical pro-cedure, someone who is hospitalized, or someone who is a resident in a nurs-ing home. The Grace of the Anointing of the Sick has brought great consola-tion and relief to many people in our community. The sacrament helps us to configure the suffering caused by the

illness or injury to Jesus’ suffering on the Cross, which was done for the sal-vation of the world. It also gives us consolation and helps us to understand and accept suffering because it has a saving effect, just as Jesus' suffering saved the world. It helps us to realize that we have a role in the salvation of the world, and suffering is part of it, so the sacrament aids us "to carry our cross" and to "offer it up" by giving us the Grace to do so.

I hope that all take advantage of this sacrament when needed. You need on-ly to call the church, and myself or Fr. Pitre will be glad to administer it. As a practical matter, it is good not to wait until the last minute to request it. Wait-ing until the last minute can be a prob-lem, as there are times when both Fr. Pitre and I are out of town or unable to do so because of other duties in our ministry. Also, please know that if there is an emergency and someone requires hospital care at one of our hos-pitals, there is a priest on call for this purpose. Therefore, if you are unable to reach myself or Fr. Pitre, let the hos-pital staff know that you would like the "on call" priest to administer the sacra-ment. The staff will know how to con-tact him.

National Marriage Week Today is World Marriage Day celebrat-ed as part of National Marriage Week which ran from February 7-14th this year. The dignity of the marital voca-

tion is not respected the same way to-day as it has been in the past, and that is one of the bigger problems of our society. Quite simply, fidelity to the marriage covenant is also not valued as much in our culture as it has been in the past, and that is causing real and negative effects on our society, espe-cially our young. It also impacts our proper understanding of how to re-spect life and human dignity, especial-ly in the formation of our chil-dren. Please know of my great respect and admiration for those who remain dedicated to the beautiful vocation of marriage and our community's support to assist our married couples in any way we can in fulfilling that vocation.

Bishop’s Service Appeal In addition, this weekend kicks off the Bishop’s Services Appeal (BSA), the "regular offertory" for the diocese that helps pay for the benefits provided by the diocese to us and our community, including administrative services to our parish, support of seminarians, and service to the poor. If you have donat-ed in the past, the usual solicitation and informational letter will be sent to you. For those of you who have not given in the past or who use envelopes, the BSA envelopes will be placed in the church at the usual places in the Gath-ering Area and near the exits. Our regular second offertories at Masses will also continue all year. Thanks again for your continued generosity!

Ever thought of trying something new and different in 2020? Would you like to use your God-given gifts as well as share the Gospel through music in our community? This would be a perfect time to become a part of our music min-istry at St. Pius. We rehearse on Wednesday nights; the children’s Choir from 5:30 - 6:15 p.m. in the St. Cecilia Room, and the adult choir rehearses from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the church. No music experience or music reading is re-quired. We would love to welcome you for a trial period if you would like to see if you want to be a part of one of our musical groups with no long term commitment. This would be a perfect time to join in as we start a New Year and continue on our journey towards the Lenten Season, Holy Week, and Easter! Please contact Karen Melancon at [email protected] or call the church office to speak with Karen if you have any questions.

Honoring the

The Diocese, in partnership with the Franciscan Catechetical Institute, is providing vital training to local parish instructors, parents and school reli-

gion teachers to enhance their own parish programs and be better prepared to carry the light of faith. By working together to strengthen the instruction

of children in the fundamentals of Catholicism, we are ensuring that the legacy of our faith is passed on from one generation to the next. Sixteen

thousand children participated in religious instruction last year in the Dio-cese of Lafayette.
