RETIRED PARISHIONERS – WE NEED YOU!Friends Across Time Returns, With a New Format for this Year of Distancing! The popular Friends Across Time program returns to St. Matthew School for our 17th year! Students from both Mrs. Hartge’s and Mrs. Wnek’s Fourth Grade classrooms participate. This well-established intergenerational group enables our students and older parishioners to learn from, and better appreciate, each other’s experiences. This year, rather than meeting in person, we will resurrect the concept of “pen pals,” exchanging actual written letters through the U.S Mail with the Fourth Graders each month. Each adult will be assigned at least one Fourth Grade “buddy” for the year.
Long-time participant Sue Lawhead says, “This program has enriched my life ten-fold! I receive more from the children than I would have ever imagined!”We are eagerly seeking at least seventy (70) retired parishioners to be buddies with Fourth Grade students. Returning participants are encouraged to invite interested friends! We would like to have our roster of adults solidified by September 1. Please contact Mrs. Judeen Hartge at 614-477-9678 or [email protected] with any questions, and to provide your contact information.

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 2, 2020
IN OUR PARISH
PARISH PROJECTSAs good stewards of your generosity, the Facilities Team is pleased to provide you regular updates on St. Matthew campus projects, improvements, and ongoing initiatives. This week we are going to switch gears. You already know we are committed to providing a safe campus to worship and learn. We are still at the mercy of regulatory agencies and Diocese guidance. We will keep you posted on back-to-school plans in this ever-changing environment. In light of receiving two Grants, we wanted to thank The Catholic Foundation and provide additional details on how those Grants are being utilized. The Catholic Foundation was established as a non-profit, charitable organization that receives and manages assets to provide perpetual funding for the parishes, schools, and ministries within the 23-county Diocese of Columbus. Their Mission in Christ is to inspire giving to provide for the long-term needs of the Diocese. This year, they accelerated the process based on Covid-19 related issues.Last year, St. Matthew School received $10,000 in response to our need for egress windows in the upper hall which houses our new pre-k classroom and our middle school students; sixth through eighth grades. As we continued to focus on school and campus safety, during lock-down and fire drills, a disconnect between the school and church was identified. The Parish campus (church and school) operates and manages two independent access control systems, a security system and two fire alarm systems. If an emergency happens in one building, we do not have the ability to inform, lock down or clear the other building if needed. By linking the school and church security systems, we can eliminate management redundancy and provide the ability to lock down the campus from multiple locations. We have been granted $2,000 toward this project. This past March, our campus was abruptly shut down. Without notice, the school had to develop a distance learning program and the church had to live stream Masses; both happened quickly and successfully. In the case of the church, streaming equipment was patched together using a mobile phone, a borrowed laptop, and a used camera. The system was functional, but not user friendly and had only basic features. The grant application was to provide a new, simple, reliable and dedicated streaming system so we could ultimately train a Stream Team of producers to cover daily and Sunday Masses. Our objective remains to serve the faithful that cannot attend Mass or church because of the Covid-19 crisis for personal health or physically challenged reasons. We were granted $3,000 toward this project and continue to build a team to stream our Masses. Thanks again to The Catholic Foundation for their help with these projects. We appreciate this opportunity to provide updates on what we are doing on campus. Please don’t hesitate to text or email suggestions on how we can better serve you in these difficult times. Contact George Harvey at [email protected] or text 330-904-1083. Stay healthy and God Bless.
EVANGELUS COMING THIS WEEKDear St. Matthew Family,My name is Michelle Dougherty, and I’m the Office and Ministry Coordinator here at St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Parish. I’ve been working at the parish for about a year and a half, and my job is to coordinate with the office team, the ministry team, and our awesome volunteers to help keep everything running smoothly as we live out our parish mission: worship, serve, and evangelize.Lately, our staff has been working on improving communications in the parish, and we are happy to announce that we will be adopting a new way to keep our parish family connected: Evangelus.Evangelus is a program that allows us to send emails and email newsletters to large groups, but the feature we’re really excited about is that we can also use it to communicate via SMS text message. These days, so many of us are receiving so many emails that it’s hard to keep our inboxes clean and organized! We are excited, therefore, that Evangelus allows people to choose if they would prefer to receive text notifications rather than emails. No matter which communication option you choose, we promise not to drown you in messages. Here’s what you should expect from us early this week:• If you are a registered parishioner and we have either an
email address or cell phone number on file for you, you will receive a welcome message from us via Evangelus in one of two ways: email or text message.
• If we only have a cell phone number on file, you will receive a text message that says that we are trying to send you a message. You will have to agree to accept text messages from us if you want to view that message or any future messages.
• You will be invited to create a profile, and once you create a profile, you will see several groups listed. You are welcome to add yourself to any groups to which you belong. This step is optional. (Not all of our parish ministries are using Evangelus for communication right now. If you don’t see your group listed, don’t worry.)
• If you do not create a profile, you will still be able to receive messages from us, but we encourage you to log in to choose your communication preferences. You can unsubscribe from any group or change your communication preferences at any time.
• When you create a profile, you will see that it asks for your birth date. We are asking for this because we want to make sure we are only communicating with adults.
If you don’t receive a welcome email from us, then it might be because you aren’t a registered parishioner. If you’re not a registered parishioner and want to be, we’d love to have you! You can register on our website. Also, we know that not all of our parishioners have email addresses or cell phones. If that’s you, don’t worry. We haven’t forgotten about you, and we’re planning ways to improve our communication to you, as well. Thanks for being part of our family. If you have any questions, please let me know! You can email me at [email protected] or simply reply to any communication you receive from us (even by text!).In Christ,Michelle
