IN SHELF ISOLATION I recall a time, when, living with my family in Meadowbank NSW, and working as Secretary at Hunter’s Hill Council, my weekly wage was $38, and my daily expenses totaled 27c. I recall the night when Ceylon had just elected the world’s first woman prime minister, and my world changed : the word “Ceylon” translated to “Sri Lanka”, English language was made redundant, all foreign nuns were sent home, and I was soon to leave familiar shores for a far distant land on a BOAC (British Airways) plane.

50 years on and my world has changed again! The house in Meadowbank costs 1M, its residents trapped inside due to COVID-19. Historical Context – We believe… The teaching on the Trinity was not formally constructed until the 4th Century and was documented in the creed that emerged from the Council of Nicaea. The Creed that is said today in the Sunday liturgy is a version of that original Nicene Creed. The Nicene Creed spells out Christian beliefs about the nature of God, Jesus and the Spirit and was worded very carefully to negate a variety of heretical views that were held at the time. It is as much a statement about what we do not believe as it is a statement about what we do believe!

Scriptural Context – Trinity At no point in the New Testament is the term ‘Trinity’ used. That understanding of the nature of God came much later. However, there are a number of scriptural references that led to this theological understanding. The Annunciation, the baptism of Jesus and the great commissioning of the disciples to baptise in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all examples of the three persons of God being recognised or active in the gospels. Today’s second reading shows St Paul using the three experiences of God as a blessing of the people of Corinth.

Living the Gospel – Sign of the Cross Every time we bless ourselves or begin prayer with the sign of the cross, we reaffirm our belief in the Trinity. That seemingly simple prayer, ‘In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,’ is, in fact, a confirmation of our belief in a triune God – three in one. The earliest use of the sign of the cross only involved tracing a small cross with the thumb or finger on the forehead as it is still done in baptisms or blessings today. Later, describing the shape of the cross on forehead, abdomen and shoulders became the common practice.

Questions for Adults How would the earliest Jewish-Christians have reacted to the idea of God as Trinity? What images or characteristics do you ascribe to the three different experiences of God? In what ways do your prayers to Father, Son or Spirit differ? Which images or symbols of Trinity do you find helpful and which ones are unhelpful for you?

WHY DO WE DO THAT? Catholic Life Explained:

What is the purpose of the Pope?

Question: Why do Catholics have a pope?

Answer: To answer the question of why Catholics have a pope, we have to pull the lens back and think about the very nature of the Church herself. According to the Nicene Creed (which is the statement of beliefs that we recite each Sunday at Mass), we profess that the Church is “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.” These adjectives are called the marks of the Church, and they help us see that the Church is bigger than just our individual parish communities or even the Christians living in a particular region or country. To help ensure that the community of disciples would remain united in a communion of love, Jesus entrusted the Apostles with special authority to teach, heal, and forgive sins in his name. And from among this group, Jesus chose Simon Peter to play a special role, designating him as the “rock” on which the Church was to be built (see Matthew 16:18-19; John 21:15-17). Peter “the Rock” became the visible sign of union within and among the Apostles. In time, as Peter and the other Apostles passed away, other men were chosen to take their place. The successors of St. Peter — who we honor as the first Bishop of Rome — and the successors of the other Apostles (the bishops) continued the work entrusted by Jesus to that first generation of Church leaders. According to long-standing tradition, the successor of Peter was Linus, who was followed by Cletus, who was followed by Clement I, etc. This line of succession continues to Pope Francis in our own time. Over the centuries, these Bishops of Rome — who came to be known as the “pope” (from papa, which means “father” in Latin) — still continue to act as the “rock” of the Church and as the visible sign of unity for all the Catholic Christians. The pope, more than any other bishop, stands as the Church’s primary teacher and as pastor of the Church throughout the world, helping to ensure that the Church remains what Jesus intended her to be: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. To learn more, see the “Catechism of the Catholic Church” (no. 857-862 and 880-882).

SAINT ANTHONY OF PADUA Patron Saint of Sailors and Travellers and Finder of Lost Articles Feast Day : 13th June

Saint Anthony was born Fernando Martins in Lisbon, Portugal, on 15th August, 1195. At age 15 he entered the Abbey of Santa Cruz in Coimbra, the then capital of Portugal, where he learned Theology and Latin. After receiving permission to leave the Abbey, he joined the Franciscan Order and changed his name to Anthony.

He traveled to Morocco to preach the gospel, but became extremely sick and was returned to Portugal to recover, during which time he spent praying and studying. During a visit of some Dominican friars, Anthony delivered an eloquent and moving homily. News of his eloquence soon reached Francis of Assisi, and the two became close friends.

Anthony occasionally taught at the universities of Montpellier and Toulouse in southern France, but he performed best in the role of a preacher and teacher of the Catholic Faith, and in 1946 he was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII.

Once, when St. Anthony of Padua attempted to preach the true Gospel of the Catholic Church to heretics who would not listen to him, he went out and preached his message to the fish. When critics saw the fish begin to gather, they realized they should also listen to what Anthony had to say.

He died at the age of 36 in 1231, and was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1232. Upon exhumation some 336 years after his death, his tongue was found to be totally incorrupt, so perfect were the teachings that had been formed upon it. He is typically depicted with a book and the Infant Child Jesus and is commonly referred to today as the "finder of lost articles."

A new pastor was visiting in the homes of his parishioners. At one

house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer

came to his repeated knocks at the door.

He took out a business card, wrote ‘Revelation 3:20’ on the back of

it and stuck it in the door.

When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found

that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic

message, ‘Genesis 3:10..’

Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in

gales of laughter.

Revelation 3:20 begins “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.”

Genesis 3:10 reads, “I heard your voice in the garden and I was

afraid for I was naked.”
