Writing an Editorial

WRITING WORKSHOPChapter 1, Grade 11

Writing 1.0– Students write coherent and focused texts that

convey a well-defined perspective and tightly reasoned arguments.

Writing 1.1– Demonstrate an understanding of the elements

of discourse when completing persuasive writing assignments.

– What do the commercials say to convince the viewers to buy their products?

– Persuasive Techniques used in commercials often appear in more serious messages, such as political advertisements, debates, and editorials.

Audience

– If you have trouble visualizing your audience, imagine a person who takes the position opposite yours on the issue about which you are writing.

– As you write, keep that person in mind.

Analyze Your Audience

– As the speakers in your editorials, you will want to adopt the correct tone.

» The tone is the attitude writers express toward a subject and an audience through you language.

– Take a polite, respectful, and rational tone when writing your editorials.

Gather and Shape Support

– You need to become familiar with ethical appeals which are appeals to an audience’s sense of right and wrong.

» Conceding a Point: “True, many young people would benefit from more structured after-school activities.”

» A demonstration of fairness: “Is arbitrarily placing restrictions on one group in keeping with our country’s concept of equal protection under the law?”

A Writer’s Model– One of the best ways to

capture your audience’s attention is to surprise them.

– Begin your editorials with a fact, quotation, or anecdote that will surprise your audience.

– You can ask yourself: » “What do I find most

surprising about my issue?”
