What is VoIP?

• Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)

• Allows telephone calls using a computer network, over a data network like the internet.

• Converts analog voice into a digital signal -- packets of data that travel over the Internet Protocol (IP) network.

• At the other end, the packets are reassembled and converted back into an analog signal -- enabling use with other VoIP phones and more traditional analog phones.

Perception v. Reality• False Perception: Commercial

grade VoIP is run over the public internet lines.

• Reality: Consumer VoIP offerings like Skype run over public internet connections. Commercial VoIP service uses separate pipes created especially for VoIP.

How It Works…• HipTel transfers your voice data into information packets, using an ATA (VON Phone Adapter).• The information packets are broken up and prepared for transmission.• It then uses the Internet to send your voice data in the form of packets to a nearby router. The information

packets are passed through a series of routers until it reaches its final destination.• Unlike a an analog phone line, the packets are broken up and sent through the fastest, cost effective

channel. Like processing data information over the Internet, each packet travels a unique path to reach its final destination.

• Upon arrival, the receiving end reassembles the information packets and transfers it to your phone.

FAQ’s

• How do I place a call?– Easily, and exactly like using an analog phone. Most people aren’t even aware they are using a VoIP

phone. High quality commercial VoIP lines, like the ones provided by Long Distance Post, sound like regular phones and provide the same high quality connections. Long-distance carriers themselves — though careful not to abandon their lucrative circuit-switching business — have been using VoIP Technology “behind the scenes” for years. Though you probably haven't realized it, a lot of your calls, especially international ones, are currently routed over data lines.

• What kind of equipment do I need?– The only thing you need is a high speed internet connection. When you purchase a plan from HipTel

we will provide you with an ATA, IP phone or USB phone to plug into your internet connection.

• Who can I call?– Anyone! VoIP lines can call other VoIP lines or regular analog phones. Calls between HipTel and

Prescient Worldwide phone are free.

• Can I use my computer while I am on the phone?– Yes, they are on separate pipes. One will have no affect on the other.

FAQ’s, page 2

• Do I need a computer to use VoIP?– No. The VoIP lines are not connected to your computer. However, you do need a high speed internet

connection.

• How do I know if I have a VoIP phone call?– Your phone will ring. VoIP phones ring just like analog phones.

• Does the FCC regulate VoIP?– The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) promotes competition and innovation. Historically,

the FCC has not regulated the Internet or the services provided over it. On February 12, 2004, the FCC found that an entirely Internet-based VoIP service was an unregulated information service. On the same day, the FCC began a broader proceeding to examine its role in this new environment of increased consumer choice.

Brewster Academy, Implementation

• Upgraded quality and number of available phone lines.

• Ported old phone number to HipTel.

• Bandwidth significantly increased, eliminating slow or no response during peak internet usage times. VON PBX and additional T1 lines saved ~45% on telecommunications costs.

• Instead of using 6 T1 lines, Brewster Academy chose a burstable DS-3 line - capable of providing 45 MB of bandwidth. Currently only using 6 MB.

• Data and voice transfer expansion now possible, including real-time videoconferencing.

• A strategic move. Brewster is now worry-free about available phone lines, and internet traffic for future years to come.

Problems/Obstacles• Firewall: Brewster, reliant on Apple computers, has a

sophisticated firewall, managed by a third party. Routing phones and computers around the firewall was a challenge now resolved. Root problem was with the firewall provider.

• Hubs: A few hubs and data switches needed replacement. Determining which was a problem. After careful testing this issue was resolved.

• Old Wiring: No new wiring was required for for offices and dorms. Some individual extensions were found dead and repaired.
