Dear Members

This edition of Soundings is a 3 month special covering March April and May. We will then return to the usual bimonthly publication. This has been done so publication dates better match club events. This is the first edition of Soundings that has been edited and laid out by the club committee. As ever the final design owes much to Sammy at our publishers, Looking Glass Publications.

I believe that our magazine come from the club as well as be for the club so I am very keen to be in receipt of any suggestions and contributions from club members. Email to: [email protected]

Commodore's Report

Peter Miller, Commodore - Exile

The year has started well.

The sailing competitions have started with the short-handed and combined clubs series underway and well represented. I thank the good numbers of WMSC members that attended the last general meeting, giving us a quorum and allowing us to pass an amended constitution for submission to the office of fair trading. The amendment simply tidied up numerous changes to the constitution over the years,. I thank Tony Shoesmith and Col Ramsay for work involved in tidying this up.

The cruise to St Helena Island lead by Darcy and Julie Glister went well with good attendance and no mishaps that I have heard of….

The social side of things is also going well with the new caterers settled in and going number of over 100 people at the first and third Friday night dinners in February and March. The music and members draws have been well received and the numbers continue to grow.

Vice Commodore John has been working on updating our strategic plan for the next few years and should have this task completed shortly.

The veranda plans are proceeding well and we hope to start construction shortly with the aim being to finish the work before the St Helena Cup. There may be some short term disruptions around the club and I ask for your patience whilst this work is underway.

I have been talking to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) about the possibility of alterations to the club ramp to make it safer. These discussions are ongoing and I hope to receive good news shortly.

Looking forward to seeing you all around the club and on the water.

The Hart Cup WMYC's annual Easter passage race. This event is well supported by the Mooloolaba Yacht club. The race starts Friday 25th May. Image prepared by Greg Doolan

John Tunney, Marina Manager for Marina Board

Marina Media

Hello Everyone

The warmer months are behind us now and that wonderful autumn boating weather has arrived. We have all been busy tidying up the marina office over the last few months and are looking forward to some new furniture and floor coverings.

Let’s Talk SafetyPlease remember to keep the marina walkways and berth fingers free of obstacles, and position your boat so that your anchor or any protrusions do not extend over the walkway or fingers in both calm and windy conditions. Avoid plugging in to 240 Volt shore power unnecessarily, and if you need to, keep your extension leads in good condition. Don’t wrap them around the walkway piles!

Within the waterways of our marina the speed limit is 4 knots and no wash. Please keep this in mind when your boat is arriving and departing our marina.

Walkway TrolleysOur walkway trolleys are provided for everyone to use when loading and unloading your boat. Please don’t leave the trolley sit beside your boat when it is not being used for that purpose. Return the trolley to the head of the walkway where you found it as soon as you have finished using it. Please report any trolley defects (eg; flat tyres) to the marina office, or bring it to the slipway area for repair.

Berths for Sale Up-to-date information about available berths on the club website.www.wmyc.com.au/index.php/marina/berths-for-sale/

Slipway Services Did you know that our Slipway Services include:• All General Slipping and Wash - Down Facilities for boats – up to 42 tonnes, and to 17 metres (56 ft) in total length. . • Dustless Sanders and Sanding Accessories for hire.• Swaging Tools for hire.• Crane hire for engine or heavy equipment removal or replacement.• Sale of “Bilge Rats” for soaking up any minor oil leaks in your bilge.• Planks, Trestles, Ladders available free of charge.• Lockup facilities for your tools.• Tea and coffee making facilities, microwave, refrigerator, BBQ.

Slipway Safety Our slipway has been in operation for over 25 years and has an excellent safety record. This is due to the slipway rules being followed by our customers and of course, our slipmasters who not only bring up and put down the boats but also keep a watchful eye out for any potential safety and environmental issues that may arise.

A big thanks goes to all of our slipway customers for “doing the right thing” and keeping our slipway reputation up there with the best for safety and environmental practice.

The Slipway Blues

Welcome to the world of dust, the world of fumes and dirt and rust. You’ve come up for your annual slipping, your boat sits on the trolley,

dripping. The water-blaster’s done it’s best, so now you scrape and sand the rest.

Last year’s paint just didn’t stick, the barnacles are growing thick.Should you try a different brand? Or maybe just a proper sand?

Or use a primer? Yes or no? So many different ways to go!

Osmosis rears it’s ugly head, although you fixed it like they said,You try again, and hope and pray those bloody blisters stay away.

The anodes are all gone again, there’s more rust on the anchor chain,The cost of all that stuff has grown, your budget’s well and truly blown.

The friends who helped the first few days have long since gone their separate ways.

The trolley scrapes you on the knee, you trip on things you didn’t see,Your back is sore, your shoulders ache, but look! Some guys have brought

a cake! The smoko break goes on and on, just one more cup, another scone….

And then it rains! That’s more delay, dare you ask for one more day?

The boats beside you come and go, but now your hard work starts to show. The antifouling looks so clean, the topsides have that polished sheen,She looks so lovely sitting there, you just can’t help but stop and stare.

“This year we’ll take a holiday, the wife and I out on the bay. We’ll leave the kids and dog behind,( I’m sure that they won’t really mind,)And just take food, and beer and wine, some crab pots and a fishing line,

Dine in the cockpit every night, with not a paint roller in sight!”

Launching day is here at last, that “torture time” is nearly past,You pay the bill then in she goes, and that’s an end to this year’s woes. There’s twelve months to forget the pain, then you can do it all again!!!

Sailing Chairman's Report

Blair Harrison, Sailing Chairman - Redjam

The sailing season started again with the first SAGS event on the 24th Jan. The first Short Handed race was sailed in windy conditions in early Feb. There were 12 boats signed on with 10 actually starting. I thought that all sailors acquitted themselves well with winds gusting to 25knots. The second Short Handed race was cancelled last week end due to the strong winds associated with the cyclone. The third race is scheduled for the 3rd April and the committee will determine when the 2nd race can be re scheduled.

The next big event will be the Hart Cup at Easter and the Mooloolaba Yacht club have organised free berthing for the Fri and Sat nights. This is subject to availability and owners should book early. The Manly Combined races commence next Sunday and WMSC owners need to book through the MCC web site directly. This was a popular race last year and hopefully we will get good numbers again this year.

The Manly Combined Races have started with the second and third races scheduled for the 13th March. Again this is a great series with good competition from the other participating clubs. I would urge all to enter.

The Timber and Traditional Boat Festival WMYC30th April and 1st May 2016

The weekend racing features the Vic Lucas Cup Presented to the winning Division 2 yacht

All the event news will be on the club website

The Vic Lucas Cup.A trophy with an important place in Australian sailing history.

In 1998 the then and present club Patron Senator Ron Boswell made a request to the Maritime Museum Brisbane for use by WMYC of a trophy held at the museum.

The trophy had been won in 1935 by Brisbane champion sailor Vic Lucas when contesting the Foster Cup. Mr Lucas’s sister gave permission for the trophy to

reside on loan at WMYC.

The Foster Cup.The Foster Cup was an annual

completion between states sailing the 21 foot restricted class.

In 1922 the Governor General of Australia the Hon Lord Foster promoted the

interstate championship and the event was named for him. It was held in Sydney

in 1922 and Brisbane in 1923. With a break for the war years the national championship was held continuously

until Melbourne in 1955. Some racing was conducted again between 1960 and

1965 in Melbourne but was limited to being a local Victorian only state revival. In its day the 21 ft restricted class was the “high teck” development class seen as the pinnacle of small yacht national

competition.

Clubhouse

Vice-Commodore, John Vandermaat - Haze

The Clubhouse operations have kicked off 2016 with a great new vibe. Thanks to all the members and guests who have come along to enjoy the new dining experiences with Café La Mer that commenced in February. We have had some big crowds, great food and some fine entertainment.

On the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month we are opening the clubhouse from 5:00 pm and the café will take orders for meals beginning at 6:00. There is a great menu and no need to rush – they will take orders up to 8:00 pm or a bit later and they won’t run out. On these nights, the club is also running a raffle, lucky door prize and the Members Draw. On the first Friday of the month we will also put on live entertainment, so make sure you mark that in your diary.

On Sunday afternoons, the clubhouse is open from about 3:00 pm. It’s a great place to drop in after a day on the water and catch up with friends. The SAGS fleet rolls up about 4:30 and they always have some good stories to tell. We will also do a Members Draw on these Sunday afternoon, round the same time the SAGS presents their prizes for the days’ race. We are also seeing some members rolling up with musical instruments and impromptu jam sessions starting up. If you’ve got some musical talent (you don’t need much) come along and join the fun.

The clubhouse is also available for members to hire for their own special events. Offering a fully stocked bar, professional bar staff and access to the kitchen for self provisioning or professional catering (Café La Mer can cater your events), it’s a great service available for members. Contact the WMYC Office to discuss and make bookings.

Look out on the new club web page as well as email and Facebook for details of upcoming events.

Article by Graham Holley, Club Member

Once Surf to City event was announced for 2016 the opportunity to participate was hard to resist on the newly acquired ketch “Supermolli”

Supermolli is not a performer in light winds being 13 tonne but add some breeze she does not lounge around.

We arrived at the start line a few minutes late and bobbed around for an hour and felt as if Sydney was getting closer than Cape Moreton.

Considering we had an oncoming sea sickness of one crew member and that the remainder had work duties on the following Monday it was decided to pull out of the race and follow the inshore fleet back. Once we came back through the turbulent seaway we joined the tail end of the Inshore fleet

We did most of the return to Brisbane under motor with some easy periods sailing alongside the Inshore fleet which was very interesting as they had head winds and tide against them for the early period and there was lots of beating up the waterways and we had many Pull Ups so as to give way to them as we were under motor.

I would like to congratulate the inshore fleet for the gallant efforts as we witnessed most of the way back to Brisbane.

I also wish to congratulate Blair on Red Jam being 1st PHRF and ORCi land Sam on Jazz being 3rd PHRF. Their dedication of getting to Shorncliffe needs to be admired considering the challenge to keep going North in the early part of the race.

Napoleon's RetreatWell, maybe not quite, but St Helena Island in Moreton Bay seemed an ideal name for the authorities of the day as the home for their new Maximum Security prison. As such, the buildings that survive form a fascinating piece of our local history. It’s also a good spot to visit to chase up any ancestors of yours who became Guests of Her Majesty.

So the intrepid sailors of the WMYC cruising group – always ready for a lark – launched an amphibious assault on the weekend of the 20th and 21st of February.

For me it started fairly normally. After the morning briefing (which this time Ben and I made on time) we returned to our cars. I was puzzling why the doors to my Toyota wouldn’t open and was just thinking how clean my car looked when I noticed Ben several cars further up sitting in front of a grotty Toyota Yaris. Ah my keys worked on this car. Ta Ben.

The fleet departed in odd groups as depicting the odd skippers we had. Some of us tried to sail (Lady L being a lady prefers not to sail to windward) others did sail and even more motored until the WMYC Armada filled the Bay just north of the jetty on St Helena Island. On the way up, we were entertained by our friends from Royal Posh who had temporary ownership of radio station Ch 77. It seemed we were all having great fun. Soon we were anchored and sheltered from the nor’east. Bliss.

Dogs needed to have their interests attended to so the dog-owners were first ashore. A high tide allowed us to cool down in the milk-warm waters of the Bay. This was followed by lunch back aboard and then at 14.30 a trip ashore with stout boots for those partaking of the escorted tour of the buildings and museum. Ranger Mark gave a most instructive guide through the buildings and provided a thorough background history of the prison. I baby-sat Ben with Robin and her dog Bailey, whilst the adventurers adventured. Graham and Sue from Portia also had Ziggy on board.

At 17.30 the food-ferries began to bring vitally needed provisions. This was Sundowners. There was food to feed a thousand. Of mention in despatches, was Michael Bryant with HOT sausage rolls and BBQ sauce.

But the big surprise was to come. Pot Luck – defined as ”what may happen to be in the pot for a meal, without special preparation for guests”. Not quite accurate. There was TREMENDOUS preparation for guests and bucket after pot was brought ashore, much of it steaming hot. Ben was overjoyed. There was chicken, there were rice dishes, meat and salads of every description. It was a delight to warm any dogs heart and Ben threw himself into the party spirit introducing himself to all and especially sundry. Once again the members of the WMYC Cruising Group excelled. Had Napoleon had cooks like this after the Battle of Borodino the Tolstoy would have had to re-write War and Peace.

Of note were the junior cruisers - including the intrepid crew of the Compass Careel 18 skippered by parents Sebastien and Nedda and Matthew and Amelia the crew on the cat named Restless. It is so good to know there is a younger generation of cruisers coming up in WMYC to replace the grumpy and grumbly old hands.

Then as darkness deepened and bellies extended as dietary vows were broken again by all and sundry, the food was packed up by the slaves from the galleys and taken back to the fleet. The Muir’s raffle was drawn and won by Hans and Chris off the yacht Palomino. It was certainly a night to remember. We returned to our boats tired and sated. The weather had been perfect.

However, next morning perfect had gone, being replaced by a strong sou’easterly. After I took Ben ashore, I had an involuntary swim after my dinghy decided to eject me. I was very pleased Peter and Robin from nearby Pescador were able to land me like a beaching dugong. I also want to thank the young crew off the yacht astern of me for recovering my beautiful yellow sailing hat.

Soon we were all off, making it back into the headwind. As usual Lady L complained about being made to sail to windward but with occasional judicious use of the Kubota main we managed to sail most of the way.

I keep using the superlatives in describing these cruises. But it was simply wonderful. I welcome the neophytes Sebastien and Nedda and family, Stuart and Maris off Safona, and Hans and Chris Anneveldt off Palomino as well as the rest of the fleet and their occupants in particular 2 and 4 legged.

Please mark your calendars for King Island on 28th May, Scarborough on the Queen’s Birthday weekend 1st, 2nd and 3rd of October and our Christmas Cruise to Peel Island on 10th December.

"Ben ( in the red life Jacket) certainly had a good time.

Last Month the Marina office was visited by our local water police who were investigating an epirb distress signal and were trying to locate the vessel with the activated epirb. The registration details for the epirb were incomplete and / or inaccurate; hence the police did not know the vessel’s name only its length. As it transpired the vessel was located at East Coast Marina. This is a timely reminder to us about epirb registration.

Epirb Registration:

Maritime Safety Qld. safety rules state:

“EPIRB (406 MHz) Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon is required when operating more than 2 nm from land. The Epirb must be registered with AMSA. Registration must be renewed every two years.”

EPIRBs must have a printed expiry date and be replaced or serviced by the manufacturer (or authorised service agent) by this date; must comply with Australian Standard AS/NZ 4280.1:2003; and must be registered in the name of the owner/master with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority

No EPIRB registration stickers from September 2015

From September 2015 the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) will no longer issue stickers as proof of Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs or beacons) registration. Vessel and aircraft owners are still required by law to provide proof of beacon registration if asked by authorities. You must use one of the following alternative methods from 15 September 2015 to do this:

Email registration—Carry a printed copy of your email registration confirmation when using your vessel or aircraft.

SMS registration—Save your SMS registration confirmation in your phone and have it with you when using your vessel or aircraft.

Post printed registration—If you don’t have an email address or mobile phone, ask for a copy of your registration confirmation to be mailed to you and carry it with you when using your vessel or aircraft.

Mobile beacon system—Owners and inspectors will be able to enter the beacon’s HEX ID into a new beacon system on their mobile device to confirm whether the beacon is registered. “

Dragon Boating as a sport is entering the serious end of the year. As I write this we have returned form the Queensland State Titles. It was held in Bundaberg for the first time, on Saturday and Sunday, February 27th and 28th. Manly had a great contingent of 67 members competing in Bundaberg. We contested events in every age group, except sadly the juniors.

Our squad was a very “young” one, with most of our new members taking centre stage for their first taste of a championships event. They performed very well against the best in Queensland, coming away with 1 Gold, 5 Silver and 11 Bronze medals, an excellent effort without the bulk of our more seasoned World Champs crew. It shows real possibilities for the future growth in our clubs capabilities, which we are very excited about.

While Manly is very open and inclusive with the State Titles, we also have other regattas on the near horizon. Next stop is the Australian National Titles which begin March 24th in Adelaide, closely followed from April 1st by the Club Crew World Championships (CCWC). Both of those events have involved a crew selection process. All members go through a 2-stage testing program. They all train regularly through the season where the coaches also evaluate paddling skill, fit within the crew, and very importantly fit within the Manly club values.

Our crews have been selected with the aim of contesting those 2 events to our best ability. The Nationals will challenge us to juggle the racing program. Unfortunately we need to meet some governing rules that dictate what races we can contest. It basically means we need to race the same events that we will also race in the World Champs. Sounds simple enough, but it isn’t. Very complicated, believe me. Our coaches work tirelessly to manage the complicated process, for which we are thankful.

CCWC will see Manly contest 10 categories, across 4 age groups. 27 different race divisions in total. Depending on the race draw it could be up to 90 races. We will have approx. 65 paddlers attending over 6 days of racing. Clubs from all over the world will attend. 58 clubs will race in standard boat – which means 20 paddlers, while 66 will race in small boat – meaning 10 paddlers.
