CPR ANNOUNCES 2009 FINANCIAL RESULTSCanadian Pacific Railway announced its fourth quarter and full year results on Janu-ary 28. CN press release Jan. 28, 2010

RAILWAY ASSOCIATION OF CANADA: YEAR IN REVIEWIn a press release December 30, the Railway Association of Canada said “After a bumpy run through 2009 as the global economic slowdown cut into the demand for freight movement, Canada’s freight and passenger railways are looking forward to better re-sults in 2010.

Cliff Mackay, President and CEO of the RAC said, “From all signs, the decline in freight rail traffic hit rock bottom during the summer and has begun to rebound. For VIA Rail and the country’s commuter rail operators, 2009 brought needed financial in-jections from government that will help set them on the right track to meet the expec-tations of their growing number of custom-ers. Inter-city commuter and tourist traffic totaled 72.3 million passengers in 2008, and is still growing.RAC press release Dec. 30, 2009

CN REPORTS NET INCOME OF $582 MILLION IN FOURTH QUARTERCN said January 28 that its fourth quarter net income of $582 million was up 2 per cent over the same quarter in 2008. Fourth quarter revenues of $1,854 million were down 14 per cent and the fourth quarter op-erating ratio was 65.3 per cent compared to 62.7 per cent in 2008.Net income for the full year 2009 was $1,854 million, down two per cent from 2008 on revenues of $7,367 million, thirteen per cent lower than 2008, mainly due, the company said, to significantly lower freight volumes in almost all markets as a result of economic conditions in the North American and global economies. Operating expenses were $4,961 million, down eleven per cent, and the company’s operating ratio was 67.3 per cent up by 1.4 points over 2008.

The CREATE project:a major rail connection and capacity project car-ried out by the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency (CREATE), a $1.5 billion (US) public/private partnership to modernize and improve rail capacity in the busy Chicago hub.Earl Wacker, Vice-President, National Director - Railroads Infrastructure and Environment, URS Corp. was appointed Director of the Chicago Transportation Coordination Office (CTCO) and chairman of the implementation team in 2003.

Earl said that the CREATE program was the first-of-its-kind public/private partnership bringing together Illinois Department of Transportation, the City of Chicago Department of Transportation and the Association of American Railroads. CREATE comprised 71 critically needed rail and infrastructure improvements aimed at increasing the efficiency of freight and passenger rail service in the region.

Chicago is the only U.S. city where all six Class 1 North American railroads (BNSF, CN, CPR, CSX, NS and UP plus passenger railways Amtrak and Metra) all converge. Half of all U.S. rail freight passes through Chicago’s rail yards and more than 500 freight trains and 37,500 carloads of freight depart each day from Chicago.

The project would include the overhaul of five rail corridors, construction of six rail-to-rail “flyover bridges” and construction of tunnels or bridges at 25 key railroad crossings.

Prior to mid-2007, Brighton Park was the only still-operating manually run rail junction left in the U.S. and had become the poster child for antiquated rail operations in the Chicago area. More than 70 trains a day inched up to Brighton Park at walking speed then stopped,

waiting for clearance by manually operated semaphores originally installed in 1944.

Automation of the crossing included in-stallation of eight diamond crossings and coordinated crossing traffic using a computer simulation program and remotely controlled signals which allows trains to pass through the junction at speeds up to 30 m.p.h. Dispatchers at a nearby rail yard now control the trains at Brighton Park and the old rule requiring all trains to stop has been eliminated.
