ONE POINT TO BE GAINED.

One point, anil Hint not an insig-nificant one, to be gained by theconstruction of the projected rail-road to Pearl Ilaibor, is the bring-ing within easy reach of Honolulu amost desirable locality for countiylcsidcnces, for pel sons whoso ietu-la- r

occupations are in the capitalcity. Tlicic is piobably no place onthe islands, certainly not within tenor fifteen miles of Honolulu, whichpresents the same advantages forprivate residence as the district ofPearl Harbor. Here is a beautifulsheet of land-locke- d water, safe inall weathers for boating, etc. Thesurrounding country is open to thehealthful trade winds, which most ofthe year exeicise a cooling effect onthe atmosphere. Unoccupied landis abundant. The whole population

f Honolulu might he transferred toits shores without taking up onetithe of the land on which nobodynow h es. With a lailroad connect-ing that district with the city, itwould be within reach of the meansof many of our business people andothers to locate their country resi-dences there, to whicn to retire atthe close of the day's duties, forrest and luoreation. Thirty or fortyminutes' quiet travel by lail wouldtake one fiom here to there. Nodoubt the completion of the roadwill be followed by the springing upof many pleasant homes in that dis-

trict, now so spaisely populated.Fortius reason, in addition to manyotheis, its completion will be hailedwith joy.

THE NEW DIREGTORY.

By the Australia the first instal-ment of the new Hawaiian directorwas leceived in this city and Mr. J.C. Lane will at once attend to theirditiibution through the city andother islands. The book at a cursoryglance is. exceedingly well gotten upthe names are all in alphabeticalOlder and the inlioduetion has beenwritten with much caie. Thereshould be a large demand foi copies.

MADAME JAFFA.

As announced yesterdaj', MadameJaffa, a well known pianist, arrivedon the Australia. On Tuesdayevening next, the 20th, the Madamewill give a piano recital in the Y.M. C. A. Hall, using the Steinwnygrand piano. The admission willbe $1, and it is to be hoped ourmusic-lovin- g people will turn outin large numbers. Parents shouldalso see that their children who arestudying music are present as therecital to them will bo worth morethan many lessons. The "S, F.Alta" says of Madame Juffa: "Thislady is justly regarded as one of thebest exponents or interpreter ofclassical music on the coast. Byher charming personal qualities, highly cultivated mind and musicaltalent, she has endeared herself toa large circle of friends and pupils."

Madame Jaffa was in Honolulu in18G7, and the "Gazette" of Feb.13th of that year says, "MadameJaffa has won among us a good lepu-tatio- n,

as a pianist, for brilliant exe-cution, and the futo rendering of theauthors whaso music she played,The programme was selections fiomBeethoven, Thalberg, Prudent,Mendelssholi and Schuloff. The se;lections fiom Moidelsslion were ele-

Tammany Society Opposed to their

Formation and Existence.

Committee Report Submitted.

At a meeting of the TammanySociety last evening twche newmembers were elected, includingJoseph Franklin, an

and a Republican member ofthe Legislature four yeais ago. C.A. Buckley was added to the Com-mittee on Trusts. Members of thesociety volunteered to guard thepolls on the night of the election andthe subsequent night. Speechesweic made by Joseph Naphthaly,A. J. Clunic, Joseph Franklin andothers. Mr. Franklin assigned ashis reasons for leaving the Repub-lican party and joining the Democratic, the action of Grover Cleve-land m signing the Chinese Exclu-sion bill, and the failure of the Re-

public Administration to provideany lemcdy for the evils of Mongo-lian immigration. The Committeeon Trusts submitted their report, which was unanimously adopted. The committee were authorized toemploy counsel and to commenceaction through the Attorney-Gener- al

of the State forthwith. Thereport of the committee was as fol-low s :

To the President, Officers and Mem-bers of Tammany Society, SanFrancisco, Gentlemen :

The undersigned, appointed at ameeting of Tammany Society onSeptember 26th last as a committeeto investigate the workings of theSugar Tiust in this State, to ascer-tain the name of any Californiancoi poration belonging to said Trust, and the advisability of the Societytaking action to counteract the inju-rious effects of planting the trustsystem on this Coast, beg leave tosubmit the following report:

The following extract taken fromthe report of the Investigating Com-mittee of the State of New York, gives the history of the formatiou ofthe Tiust, oi, as it calls itself, "TheSugar Rclineiies Company," its ob-jects and the manner of its work-ings:

"The combination known as theSugar Trust, with a capital repic-sente- d

by stock certificates amount-ing to 15,000,000, came into exis-tence by virtue of an agt cementdated on or about October 21, 1887,by and between the stockholders ofeight sugar refineries, csipoiationsof ibis and other States on the East-ern coast of the United States (one, however, was located in St. Louis),by which they agieed to surrenderthe stock of their seeral corpora-tions to ceitain persons as Trustees, called the Sugar Rclineiies Com-pany, and who were to hold thesame for the benefit of all ; and inexchange for such stock so surrend-ered the several stockholder so

receiving stock certificatesin the Sugar Refineries Compairy inamount at least four times the nom-inal value of the slock surrendered.

'The stock of the several corpoia-tion- s

in the bands of the trusteescalled the Sugar Rcfiueiics Com-pany, gae them the absolute con-trol of all the refineiies in the combination, and enabled the trust torun all the refineries exclusively forthe profit of all, and without anycompetition between them. Bysuch surrender the several corpora-tions became the raeie satellites ofthe trust (being the Sugar Refiner-ies Company), and all their affairsare dominated fiom the centralbody. A system of leports contain-ing statements of raw material pur-chased, refined sugar on hand thedaily output of each refinery, together with the funds in the treas-ury, is established between thetiust and its vassal corporations. The Sugar Refineries Company, re-commended when a refinery shallshut down and when it shall run, but, at work or idle, it receives itsshare of the general earnings. Thetrust exercises absolute control ofall the industry, and in its discre-tion takes in new corporations, which surrender their stock at avaluation agreed upon, and in turnreceive certificates of stock in TheSugar Refineries Company, forwhich reception of new corporationstho original trust agreement madefull provision. It is obvious that ineffect this combination, repiesent-in- g

as it does eighty-liv-e per cent,of the sugar refining capacity of theAtlantic coast, and all the sugar re-fineries in the State, can gieatly af-

fect, and for n time at least control,at once tho price of the raw mate-rial, and of the refined product, andthis without regaid to the interestof the consumor. It ap-pears that the price of sugar haslargely advanced sinco tho trust'sformation, and no satisfactory ex-

planation was given of tho causo ofsuch advance, aside fiom tho com-bination complained of, of eighty-fiv-e

per cent, of the sugar relinetsof the Atlantic coast to put uppi ices."

Sinco the formation of "ThoSugar Refineries Company,;' and inaccordance with its original plan, numcious additional refineries havebeen taken into the trust, andamong them the "American SugarRefinery," a California corporation, having its factory at the northwestcorner of Union and Batteiy streets,in this city.

This corporation waa originallyformed 'as the American Sugar Re

finery, Tjiifc rcincotiiOrated oii tho22d 'day of August, 1885, ns theAmerican Sugar Refinery Companywith a capital stock of 1,000,000,divided, inl.0 10,000 shares of thopar value of 8100 each, the objectsand purposes of the company, as sotout in its articles of incoi poration, being 1,lo cany on tho business ofsugar refining; to purchase, soilmanufactuic and deal in sugars andthe products thereof ; to purchase, sell, hire, lease, maintain and oper-ate sugar leilncries and refiningworks; to purchase, sell, hire andlease such lands as aro lcquisilc orconvenient for cairying on the sugarrefining business; to purchase, sell, construct and maintain Imildings, machinery, tools and other articlesand matciials necessary or useful insaid business ; to purchase and holdor sell shares of the capital stock ofother coiporations, and generally todo and perform all other acts andthings necessary or useful or auxil-iary to the main objects of the com-

pany as above set forth."About tho 1st of March, 1888, the

"American Sugar Refinery Com-pany" amalgamated with "The Su-

gar Rclineiies Company," .surrend-ering to the latter its entire capitalstock and taking in lieu thereof cer-

tificates issued by said "The SugarRefineries Compairy," of the facevalue of one and a quarter millionsof dollars. Since that time the"American Sugar Refinery Com-pany" has been under tho exclusivecontrol of "The Sugar RefineriesCompany," (which is not a corpora-tion but an association of Easterncapitalists), the supply, as well asthe price of the sugar of the Cali-fornia Company, being legulated

trust managers. TheAmerican Sugar Refinery Companyhas failed to carry out the put posesfor which it was incorporated, hassuriendered the entire control of itsproperties to outside patties, liasceased to maintain its identity, andhas become part and paiccl of anunlawful combination to 'decreasethe supply and increase the price ofa necessary article of domestic con-sumption.

Cairying out the views of the so-

ciety in undei taking this investiga-tion into the workings of the sugartrust, your committee has also ex-amined into the piesent legal statusof said American Sugar Refinery, which we understand is the onlyCalifornia corpoiation belonging tothe said trust, and to that end haveexamined the opinion of the Attorney-G-

eneral of the State of NewYork, lendeicd in io the NorthRiver Sugar Refinery Companj' andin le the Sugar Refineries Company,on the 29LU day of June iabt, andhave also consulted with the Ilon.iG. A. Johnson, the Attorney-Gener- al

of the State" of California, andnow repoit to this society, aftersuch investigation, that in the judg-ment of your committee the Amer-ican tSugar Refinery, by becomingamalgamated witli the Sugar Refin-

eries Company, has committed anillegal act, and that in a proper ac-

tion in the Couits in the State a for-feitu- ie

of its chaitcr will bo decreed.Your committee suggests that the

Tammany Society of San Franciscotake immediate steps to have theAttorney-Gener- al commence a properaction against said Californiacoi poration for the forfeitureof its franchise, and for damages, nntl to tnat end make piovis-io- n

tor the necessary costs and re-

tain counsel to assist tho Attorney-Gener- al

in such prosecution.Your obedient servants,

R. B. MiTciiKLr.,C. L. Ackmmian,P. F. Dunnc,

THE BASEBALUSTS.One of the events of the year will

A BICGER TELESCOPE THAU OLD

LICK'S.

Alyan Clark, the manufacturer ofthe great Lick Telescope lens, re-ceived a letter from the President ofthe University of Southern Califor-nia, located at Los Angeles, lastweek, asking for information as to a40-in- lens, and intimating that anorder for telescope to eclipse thatat the Lick Observatory would soonhe sent. In reply Mr. Clark sayshe can make such a lens if he canobtain glass of the proper size, andthat the cost would be between

and $500,000. BostonTraveller.

LA.B0R ON THE PANAMA CANAL.

An employeo of tho Panama Ca-nal Company tells the Ilarrishurg"Telegraph" that some blacks fromLiberia recently arrived. They hadnothing on but breech-clo- ut andnecklace. They soon struck andwanted to kill everybody till thetroops shot somo of them dead. Therest wero sent home. The Chinesesoon give up tho work and start lit-

tle stores. The men work from G

to 11 a. m., and from 1 to 0 o'clockin the afternoon. Their pay permonth is 815 and board. For nightwork 25 and 80 cents is paid for 3hours.

Advices from Bonny Rivor give arevolting story of the savage atro-cities anr cannibalism, of the OJcr-kn- n

tiibu ii revenge for some in-

jury. They invited a party of Ogo-n- is

to a friendly palaver, then en-

trapped and massacred them. Acannibal festival of the most horri-ble indescribable character follow-ed. Then an attack was made uponthe undefended villages, and themost barbarous outrages were com-

mitted, It is estimate! that oyer100 persons, including women andpUlJdren, were killed am eateij.

EXCURSION PARTY

A. PINE IA AND A 1' LEABAKT TIME

Hon. M. P. Robinson, owner oftho little stem wheel steamer Ewn,having placed that craft at tho dis-

posal of Mr. B. F. Dillingham, tholatter gentleman issued, on Mondaylast, informal invitations to a num-

ber of ladies and gentlemen to con-

stitute, on tho following day, an ex-cursion party to Pearl River.

At 7 o'clock on Tuesday morningthe gathering at Brewer's wharf, thopoint of embarkation, began ; andby 8 o'clock nil were on board, andthe little steamer started.

The party consisted of Hon. M.P. Robinson ; Mr. and Mrs. B. F.Dillingham ; U. S. Minister ResidentGeo. W. Merrill and Mrs. Merrill ;

U. S. Consul-Gcnoi- nl Putnam andMiss Putnam ; Judge McCully andMrs. McCully ; Dr. Lowell Smith ;

Rev. S. E. Bishop and Mrs. Bishop ;

Hon. W. D. Alexander; Lieut.Moore, of the U. S. S. Alert, andMis. Moore; Lieut. Crawford, ofthe Alert; Capt. Acland, of thoBritish Navy ; Messrs. J. T. Arun-del, II. Bishop, Imlach, and Neill,of England; Mr. Klugel: Mr. andMrs. W. W. Hall ; Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Damon ; Mr. and Mrs. F. Aus-tin ; Mrs. J. M. Damon ; Mr. J. F.Brown ; Mrs. E. C. Damon ; Mrs. J.J. M. Whitney ; Mrs. W. C. Mer-ri- tt

; Mrs. E. R. Hendry ; Mrs. A.Lyons; Miss M. Beckwith; Mr. D.Logan, of the "Advertiser" ; W.Hill, of the Bulletin; and severallittle Misses.

Tho day was delightfully finethroughout, the sea smooth, andjust sufficient breeze to be pleasant. The little steamer glided out of theharbor and passed near II. B. M. S.Swiftsurc, where that vessel is lyingat anchor, giving an excellent viewof the marine monster. About anhour's steaming over a gentle swell, enough only to temind the excursion-ists that they were on the sea, brought, the party to the entrance of PearlHarbor. The bar passed, the waterwas perfectly still, the slight swelloutside not affecting it in tho least.Several of the company, althoughold residents in the kingdom, statedthat this was the first time they hadbeen on tho waters of Pearl Har-bor.

The steamer made about asstraight a course as she could to- -'

wards the country residence of Mr.C. A. Blown, which is near the headof one of the numerous bays. Mr.Brown came off in a boat and joinedthe party, remaining the rest of theday, until the Ewa stinted for home, when he leluiued to his boat andpulled for home also.

The steamer kept on the moveuntil about midday, running iutobays, rounding headlands, etc., forthe purpose ul showing the charm-ing biiuuundings of Peail Harbor tothe excursionists. At noon the ves-

sel moored to the shore at an unin-habited spot, and everybody steppeddiiectly from her deck on to the dryland, without the aid of boats orany othei bother, healing with tlienithe refreshments provided lor theoccasion. The shndu of ulgaiobatiecb was abundant and near athand. Resting in this, Keen appe-tites, shai pencil by the sea air, eieappeased ; and of the fragnienlB,when all had eaten to their satisfac-tion, tlieie was enough taken up andcarried back to the vessel to feedquite a multitude.

After i efieshuient, cruising aroundthe harbor, to nooks and cornetsnot previously visited, was resumed, until a little past i o cloeK p. in.,when the Knit's nose was directedtow aids Honolulu.

The excuisionists not only en-

joyed the very pleasant cruise, hutwere also extremely delighted withtho variegated land aspects present-ed to view. To those of the partywho were there for tho first time thesight was naturally more entrancingand impressive than to thoso towhom it was familiar. Peail Har-bor, with its innumerable nooks andbays, its islands, peninsulars, etc.,is really a beautiful place. In spots, banana plots, cocoanut and mangogroves, rice plantations and comfortable looking residences nestleright down to tho water's edge. Theuncultivated lands, and indeedplaces where there is but little soilon the coral rock, aro covered withalgaroba trees and other greenery.Considering its natural attractive-ncss'an- d

its nearness to Honolulu, one cannot help feeling surpiisethatso few excursion parties ever gothere.

After a pleasant run back, overas smooth a sea as that of the morn-ing, the steamer moored atBrower's whnif nt 4:30 p, m.Some of the gentlemen whohad spent most of the day in thosun on the upper deck had veryruddy countenances, but they weroas happy as sandboys all the samp. The entire company landed, after aday's real and quiet pleasure, overwhich not a ripple hnd passedthrough any mishap, with feelingsof gratitude to Mr. Robinson andMr. Dillingham.
