Produce a glossary of terms specific to the methods and principles of Video Game Design and Video Game Terms. Using a provided template, you must research and gather definitions specific to provided glossary terms. Any definitions must be referenced with the URL link of the website you have obtained the definition.

You must also, where possible, provide specific details of how researched definitions relate to your own production practice.

Name: Colin Dockerty

RESEARCHED DEFINITION (provide short internet researched definition and URL link)

DESCRIBE THE RELEVANCE OF THE RESEARCHED TERM TO YOUR OWN PRODUCTION PRACTICE?

IMAGE SUPPORT (Provide an image and/or video link of said term being used in a game)

VIDEO GAMES / VIDEO GAME TESTING

Demo A game demo is a freely distributed piece of an upcoming or recently released video game.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_demo

The picture shows what demos do like shows you what will come in that game and how to play it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcMRkyoHKeAnot the same as vid

The game demo shows and tells u how to play the game correctly.Beta A beta version of a program,

game etc... is an unfinished version released to either the public a select few or whoever signs up to beta test it for bugs or glitches.http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Beta

In the beta it shows u so little of things that are in the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcMIfPnZ-PA

Beta is like a demo but it’s more like a test to see if there are any technical difficulties.

Alpha A very early version of a software product that may not contain all of the features that are planned for the final version.http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/alpha_version.html

In this picture it doesn’t show what will be in the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-P3Af3VmWw

The video only has a little amount of objects in the game in the future the game should be having more detail and more objects to improve it.

Pre-Alpha A development status given to a program or application that is usually not feature complete, and is not usually released to the public.http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/pre-alpha_version

in the video it only shows little parts in the game no detail or all the objects or scenery.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTaIk7akOUw

This was released but not many other games are in pre-alpha.

Gold A golden master, or GM, is the final version of a software program that is sent to manufacturing and is used to make retail copies of the software.http://www.techterms.com/definition/goldenmaster

Gold in these terms means games like watch dogs, cod and many others that have a lot of copies that are selling.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIPfgTVV6ns

This is a game that is fully complete and has copies of its self.

Debug Identify and remove errors from (computer hardware or software):games are the worst to debughttp://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/debug

All these numbers and letters show how the computer is getting debugged.

The computer is finding and then removing bugs using codes.

Automation The use or introduction of automatic equipment in a manufacturing or other process or facility:unemployment due to the spread of automationthe automation of office taskshttp://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/automation

Automation is basically things u don’t control in the game they control themselves.

This picture shows the equipment that works by itself.

White-Box Testing

A software testing technique whereby explicit knowledge of the internal workings of the item being tested are used to select the test data.http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/W/White_Box_Testing.html

White box testing is basically testing the decisions and options done in the computer.

Page 4: Y1 gd engine_terminology

Salford City CollegeEccles Sixth Form CentreBTEC Extended Diploma in GAMES DESIGNUnit 73: Sound For Computer GamesIG2 Task 1

This picture shows what white box testing is.Bug An error in a structured system.

It is usually applied to electrical and computer systems.http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Glitch

A bug is something that goes wrong in a game like say if the character was supposed to be holing a weapon but the weapon is just hovering that’s a bug or is the character is eating or drinking but it’s not going into its mouth that’s a bug A.K.A: Glitch. In this picture it shows the glass of liquid on the women’s nose when she should be

drinking from the mouth this is known as a Glitch/Bug.

GAME ENGINES

Vertex Shader A programmable function in display adapters that offers graphics application programmer flexibility in rendering an image.http://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/53754/vertex-shader

A vertex shader improves the quality in graphics.

In this picture it shows how the vertex shader changes the pic by size and graphics.

GAME ENGINES

Pixel Shader A shader that operates on the level of individual pixels, used to generate complex visual effects.http://www.yourdictionary.com/pixel-shader

A pixel shader improves graphics and detail of the games.

This picture shows how much change the pixel cover has done because on one side no detail whatsoever but on the other there defined detail.

Post Processing Post processing allows different effects to be performed on the scene after it has been rendered, but before outputting it to the viewport.http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/PostProcessEffectsHome.html

Post processing is just improving the background.

In this picture you can see the change of background and object graphics.

Rendering Rendering is the process of generating an image from a 2D or 3D model (or models in what collectively could be called a scene file), by means of computer programs. Also, the results of such a model can be called a renderinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendering_(computer_graphics)

Rendering is the improvement of features on the character like hair and facial features.

In this picture you can tell the difference in the detail of the characters hair and the definition of it.

Normal Map in 3D computer graphics, normal mapping, or "Dot3 bump mapping", is a technique used for faking the lighting of bumps and dents – an implementation of bump mapping.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_mapping

Normal mapping is just sorting a picture character out with pixel.

In this picture it shows what the normal map version of the character is.

Entity Entity Systems offer an approach to object design that fits well with games, where requirements and behaviours need to be tweaked or swapped out constantly. Traditional object oriented design falls over a little bit in that environment.http://shaun.boyblack.co.za/blog/2012/08/04/games-and-entity-systems/

In this the star fish is way to big for the area.

In this pic u can see which part of this pic needs changing the star fish too big it falls.

UV Map UV mapping is the 3D modelling process of making a 2D image representation of a 3D model's surface.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UV_mapping

UV mapping is making a 2D picture seem 3D.

In this picture the lined squares are used to make it a 2d piece In this process.

Procedural Texture

Procedural textures are textures that are defined mathematically. They are generally relatively simple to use, because they don't need to be mapped in a special way - which doesn't mean that procedural textures can't become very complex.http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Textures/Types/Procedural

As u can see not much detail is in the area so it doesn’t get mapped.

In this picture you can see that the scene is not as detailed as it could be which means it was made quickly not focused on making the game more realistic.

Physics Computer animation physics or game physics involves the introduction of the laws of physics into a simulation or game engine, particularly in 3D computer graphics, for the purpose of making the effects appear more real to the observer. Typically, simulation physics is only a close approximation to real physics, and computation is performed using discrete values.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_physics

In this the physics shows how the things look before detail and how they act.

In this picture you can see that this is only a testing template and a simulation of what’s happening in the game.

Collision Typically refers to the computational problem of detecting the intersection of two or more objects. While the topic is most often associated with its use in video games and other physical simulations, it also has applications in robotics.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collision_detection

Collision is like a glitch but more often known as a mistake in placing features of characters.

In this picture you can see the collision with the koala and the surface of the floor and wall.

Lighting Light that is of a particular kind or that has a particular quality.http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/lighting

Lighting is just basically used to show off characters and items abilities.

In this picture you can see that the light is to represent that she has power this lights quality is just to light up around her.

AA – Anti-Aliasing

Antialiasing is a way of smoothing edges. Computer monitors display pixels, but real objects have curves and lines. In order to display these on a computer monitor, the edge is often jagged. Antialiasing helps reduce the problem by slightly blurring edges to the point where jagged lines don't show easily or at all.http://compreviews.about.com/od/PC-Gaming/a/What-is-antialiasing-in-PC-games.htm

Anti-aliasing just changes the pixels to make the picture seem neater up-close.

In this picture you can see how much anti-aliasing changes the smoothness and how much better the quality gets after the anti-aliasing.

LoD – Level of Detail

in computer graphics, accounting for level of detail involves decreasing the complexity of a 3D object representation as it moves away from the viewer or according to other metrics such as object importance, viewpoint-relative speed or position.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Level_of_detail

Level of detail is basically how much the graphics and how the action is shown on a game.

In this picture you can tell that the picture on the right has more detail than the left so that means the right has higher detail level than the other.

Animation The technique of photographing successive drawings or positions of puppets or models to create an illusion of movement when the film is shown as a sequence:a combination of live action with 3D animationhttp://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/animation

Animation is more like 2D work in games a videos but you can still give of a 3D look to it using shadows.

In this picture you can see the animation of the game.

Sprite A sprite is a bitmap graphic that is designed to be part of a larger scene. It can either be a static image or an animated graphic. Examples of sprites include objects in 2D video games, icons that are part of an application user interface, and small images published on websites.http://www.techterms.com/definition/sprite

A sprite is pixel created image in a 2D form.

In this picture you can see the pixels that it is created by.Scene The place where the game

takes place.http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/scene

Scene is were the action is taking place or has taken place.

In this picture it shows where the person is and robots are.

Library A method of organising the system and network management departments of large organisations.http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/information+technology+infrastructure+library

Library organises the system and networks into order.

In this picture you can see that the information is all in order and is managed.UI A user interface, also called a

"UI" or simply an "interface," is the means in which a person controls a software application or hardware device. A good user interface provides a "user-friendly" experience, allowing the user to interact with the software or hardware in a natural and intuitive way.http://www.techterms.com/definition/user_interface

UI is basically something that people use in games for others to recognise you and themselves.

Frames Frame rate, also known as frame frequency and frames per second (FPS), is the frequency (rate) at which an imaging device produces unique consecutive images called frames. The term applies equally well to film and video cameras, computer graphics, and motion capture systems. Frame rate is most often expressed in frames per second (FPS) and is also expressed in progressive scan monitors as hertz (Hz).http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate

This is when the frame gradually improves as it goes along.

This picture shows that the frame is getting better in detail and looks.

Concept An idea of something formed by mentally combining all its characteristics or particulars; a construct.http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/concept

Concept is how the character or how an item in the game is created and all the parts.

In this picture it shows how an item in the game rwby is created.

Event Something that happens or is regarded as happening; an occurrence, especially one of some importance.http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/event

Event is a big thing that happens in games like defeating a boss.

In this picture it shows the event of ruby rose out of RWBY pulling the head of a giant eagle.

Path finding Path finding or pathing is the plotting, by a computer application, of the shortest route between two points. It is a more practical variant on solving mazes. This field of research is based heavily on Dijkstra's algorithm for finding the shortest path on a weighted graph.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pathfinding

Pathing is just a games way of navigating.

In this picture it shows to paths that the game found automatically.
