October 2013
Ybor City Campus students, faculty and staff gathered on October 9th in the campus library for a Dali Museum presentation. This is one of many activities that took place during the month of October to celebrate Hispanic Heri-tage Month. During this presentation, Sandra Woodworth, docent from the Salvador Dali Mu-seum, shared interesting details about the life and work of this famous Spanish painter. With great enthusiasm and sense of humor she kept the audience engaged while learning about art, history and culture!
The activity was organized by the Hispanic Heritage committee - Faride Trujillo, Ybor City Spanish Faculty and Chair of the Committee; Leslie Eckstein, Ybor City EAP Faculty and Co-Chair; Olga Amaya, Library staff and Bill El-mendorf, Ybor City EAP faculty.

On September 27, 2013, Ariel Gunn, Academic Success Center Coordinator (Ybor City), and Nadia Kotula, Aca-
demic Support Services Manager (Brandon), presented a poster at the conference for the National College Learning
Center Association (NCLCA). NCLCA is dedicated to “support[ing] learning center professionals as they develop and
maintain learning centers, programs, and services to enhance student learning at the post-secondary level.” This
year’s theme was “Weaving a Legacy of Student Success.”
Ariel and Nadia’s poster, “Encouraging Retention through Outreach: Engaging Developmental Math Students,” de-
scribed the results of several initiatives intended to encourage students en-
rolled in developmental math to engage with classmates (both peers and near peers), tutors, and faculty in order
to improve course outcomes. At Ybor City, the initiatives included developmental students working with College Al-
gebra service learning students from Lee Koratich’s class or joining tutor-led study groups, with students from Gary
Bachner, Al Sedory, Bonita Snyder, and Daniel Pineda’s class participating. At Brandon, participating students at-
tended faculty-led success seminars geared towards improving test performance. At both campuses, students who
participated in one (or more) of these initiatives had higher completion/persistence rates as well as higher GPAs.
For more information about NCLCA, visit http://www.nclca.org/. To learn about active learning initiatives currently
offered at the ASC or to partner with the ASC to develop these initiatives, please contact Ariel Gunn at
[email protected] or your campus ASC.
