The School Buildings

There are two main buildings at Ramsey Grammar School - East and West/South.

The East Building is the one nearer the town centre.

You will come into school through the East Building gates if you walk to school

from Ramsey. There is a pelican crossing which you must use if you need to

cross the road. There is a lay-by outside for cars, if you are driven to school.

There is a bus park inside the school gates where you will be dropped off, if you

come by bus. Once inside the grounds, you should move immediately to the West

Building along the footpath. Years 7, 8 and 9 register in the West Building.

If you come to school along Lezayre Road, you should only cross on the

footbridge and then make your way to the West playground. Do not cross on the

road or walk up the driveway - it can be very dangerous!

Maps of the layout of the school are on pages 29-31 at the back of this booklet.

Travel to School By Bus

Students who travel to and from school by bus require a

GoSchool Card in order to qualify for a 25p fare. They are

available from Bus Vannin or can be purchased and topped up online.

Students who receive free school meals also require a card but these will be

issued by the Department of Education and Children nearer to the start of

term or when a student becomes entitled to free meals. Cards must be

produced on each journey and must be in credit, otherwise students will be

charged the normal fare. It is also important to look after the cards as Bus

Vannin charge for replacements. Full details are available on their website,

along with route information. All of our buses are service buses so for up to

date information, visit the government website www.gov.im - Bus and Rail

- or contact Ramsey Bus Station – 812151.

Expectations of Students’ Behaviour on Buses

We expect that students’ behaviour will be the same on the buses as

in school.

Students should feel safe and comfortable on the bus and the journey

to and from school should be without incident.

9

The school, Bus Vannin and the police work very closely together in

dealing with poor behaviour on the buses. We consider any poor

behaviour to be very serious and will deal with it accordingly.

In general, behaviour on the buses serving Ramsey Grammar School

is excellent, but if students do experience any problems, these

should be reported to a member of staff as soon as possible.

Travel on School Buses

Students travel to and from school only for a reduced fare of 25p,

providing a GoSchool card is used.

Students in receipt of free school meals travel free of charge,

providing a pre-authorised GoSchool card is used.

The reduced fares apply until 6.30pm so there is no need for a

special pass if a student is attending a club or fixture after school.

Students must remember that all of our buses are service buses

and therefore members of the public may also be using the

services.

By Bicycle

A bicycle rack is provided at the East Building and all bicycles brought to school

must be stored there during the day - a padlock is advisable. Riding in any part of

the school grounds is not allowed. Parents are reminded that Lezayre Road is a

busy and dangerous road - therefore, those cycling to school should have passed a

Cycling Proficiency Test and should, in the interests of safety, display fluorescent

markers on their bicycles and/or clothing, wear a helmet and have lights fitted for

dark nights.

By Car

When driving students to and from school, parents are respectfully asked:

to set down and pick up their children in the lay-by in front of the East

Building only - whatever the weather

not to drive into either of the school driveways at any time

during the school day

never to drop a student at the entrance to the West Building,

or in the driveway of that building.

This is for everyone’s safety!

10

School Lunches

All students in Years 7 to 10 remain in school at lunchtime,

unless they go home for lunch. There are three sittings for lunch and each Year

group takes a turn to be on ‘first sitting’. To be fair, the rota changes each week.

Students in the Year group on first sitting may line up at the Dining Room door

at the 12.45 bell. Second and third sittings are then called by a bell, rung when

the previous queue has gone. Years 7, 8 and 9 eat their lunch in the West

Building.

The school cafeteria is there to provide you with a nourishing meal in pleasant

surroundings. You will enjoy relaxing and chatting with your friends and

having the freedom to choose

what you want to eat.

However, choose wisely!

Here are a few healthy eating guidelines - try to follow them in

your choice of lunch:

Make this an enjoyable part of your day by sitting down sensibly to eat your

lunch, clearing away properly and helping the dinner ladies by returning your

plate and cutlery to the trolley provided.

Always ensure your Smartcard has credit on it. This can be done by handing in

a cheque or by loading cash onto the card at one of the machines.

Eat more fresh fruit and vegetables

Cut down on salt and sugar

Eat less fatty food

11

What is a Form Tutor? Form Tutors are amongst the most important people in your life at Ramsey

Grammar School. Your Form Tutor is the person you will meet each day at

morning registration. He/she will be able to answer your questions and help you

to settle in. You will get to know your Form Tutor very well and he/she will also

find out about you. Your Form Tutor will help you to achieve your best at RGS

and will always be there to help you if you have any problems.

You will be in one of six tutor groups for much of your time in the first year at

secondary school. Each Form group has the initials of the Form Tutor and a letter

as its name, eg 7ACK

The Tutor Groups are:

The first letter is the House to which that group belongs. This is used when

e-points are awarded and for inter-house activities such as quizzes, Sports Day

and the swimming gala. Each House also has its own colour and during your first

term, you will be given a House t-shirt, which you will be able to wear for House

activities.

There is also a Head of Year who is responsible for the staff and students in the

year and for you in Year 7, this is Miss Johnson who can be contacted through

the school office should your parents ever need her.

They should still bring their kit to lessons and change as normal – they will be

expected to take on a different role within the lesson - scorer, timekeeper, coach,

umpire, etc to enable them to remain involved in the lesson.

15

Student Planner

In September, you will be given your own

student planner

This is a detailed diary which also contains:

maps of the buildings

pages of important information

pages for each school week so that you can record homework given

other reminders and many other useful sections

You can enter your own details - fitness, attendance and punctuality - to monitor your

own progress.

Your parents/carers and your Form Tutor will read it and sign it each week. This

process helps us to see all the positive parts of your week.

This important book will help to make life easier for you and you must take great care

of it. Remember to bring it with you to school every day. Homework

Students in all years are expected to do homework. This may take a variety of forms

from reading, researching a topic, learning vocabulary or information, practising a

skill, writing up work, answering questions, watching a television programme or any

other task which supports the work going on in class.

A date for handing in may be given and this should be recorded in the student

planner.

One of the most important skills to acquire is good organisation - homework done

punctually and thoroughly is part of this skill. Your planner will help you to keep

track of your homework.

Remember - if you have any problems with your homework, speak to your teacher

straightaway.

16

The RGS Smartcard

What is the RGS Smartcard?

The school Dining Room operates on a cashless basis and the Smartcard is used

for all purchases. Without a card you will not be able to use the Dining Room.

Cashless catering - how does it work?

Quite simply, no cash is exchanged at the till. Cards need to be “loaded” with

credit beforehand to give them a value and this can be done either by cheque or

by cash using one of the cash loaders in school. Cards are then swiped at the

till and debited for the value of the meal or purchase. It is

possible to limit daily spending on individual cards and

students are able to check their balance at the cash loading

machines or as they make a purchase at the till.

Students who receive free school meals have their accounts automatically

topped up daily. The current amount is £2.65 per day, which is only available

to spend at lunchtime. There is no facility to pay for meals at the till with cash –

cards must carry a value and be suitably credited prior to use.

How do I load money onto a card?

This can be done in three ways.:

Parentpay is an online payment service allowing you to add money to

lunch cards from a computer at home, work, or elsewhere at any time.

Cheques can be sent in in advance and students’ accounts are credited

accordingly. This is a secure method and a special post box is situated outside

the West Office for cheque payments. Cheques should be made payable to

IOM Government and should have your son/daughter’s name and Form on the

reverse. Cheques must be deposited by morning break if they are to be credited

to accounts by lunchtime.

17

Cash can be loaded onto a card via one of the cash loaders located

in each building, one near the East Hall and the other outside the West

Office. Ideally the cash loaders should only be used to top up cards

thus avoiding the need for students to bring large amounts of money

into school

How much should I load onto a card? The amount that you load is entirely up to you. For convenience, the

fewer payments the better so monthly or termly cheques are preferable.

You should simply decide how much your child can spend daily and

then multiply that amount by the number of days in the week, month or

term. As a guide, the value of a free school meal is currently £2.65 per

day. Balances remaining at the end of the school year carry over to the

next year.

What if my child loses their card? The credit stored on the card is safe but a charge will be made to cover

the cost of the replacement card. Students without cards usually have

to wait until last sitting for lunch so please encourage students to keep

their cards safe and in good condition.

What if the limit on the card is reached before I send my cheque? Students must check their accounts at the cash loaders,

balance readers or tills. Parents can also request a print out of the

account status to ensure that accounts remain in credit. Accounts can

be topped up with cash but credit cannot be given for lunches.

So what is the benefit of having a Smartcard? There are numerous benefits as the cards have several uses both in

and out of school.

Cashless catering reduces the amount of cash being brought into

school and therefore has obvious benefits in terms of security.

You can be assured that money intended for lunches is spent

appropriately.

Healthy eating can be rewarded by a points system.

The card is an ID card and may be accepted elsewhere as proof of

ID.

18

How are the cards issued? Cards will be issued to all new students in September.

Initially the cards will have a temporary design until school

photographs are taken. Students joining at other times will also receive

temporary cards until they have a photograph taken and an account set up.

Please ensure that your child always carries their Smartcard as it is an essential

part of school life. Students may check their balance at any time and should do

so regularly to ensure that there is sufficient credit on their account.

What do I need to do now? You should already have received a letter with full details of ParentPay. If you

would like a ParentPay account please complete the reply slip on the letter and

return it to the West Office in order to set this up. If you need a copy please

contact the school office.

Cheque payments may be sent in at any time ready to be credited to accounts

prior to the new term. Cheques made payable to IOM Government should be

marked with your child’s name and Form on the reverse and sent to the school

in an envelope marked “Smartcards”. Cash payments must be made in person

so cheques are preferable.

Receipts will only be issued on request and will take the form of an account

statement.

If you want your child’s account to have a daily spend limit, please advise the

school with your first payment but you should also bear in mind that the cards

may also be used at break times.

If you have any queries about the Smartcards, either

before or after your child joins the school, please contact Mr J Kneale, Bursar,

on 811100.

19

Personal Property

You are personally responsible for anything of value that you bring

into school. It is important to note that the Department of Education

and Children does not provide insurance cover for loss of, or damage

to, personal property.

It is advisable for you to check that valuable items such as mobile

electronic devices, musical instruments or bicycles are covered by

your parents’ own insurance policies.

Lost Property

Lost property is put into a box in each school office and games kit items are

put into a container in the Sports Hall entrance.

Students should check these places before reporting a loss to their Head of

Year.

Named items will be returned, so please make sure all property is

clearly marked with your name.

Lockers

A limited number of lockers are available for rental for Years 7 - 9.

These are a secure place to keep your property and saves you from

carrying all your books around with you. They are £5 for the length

of rental period.

Details are on the form which is sent to parents with all admission

information.

20

What do I do if I have a problem?

From time to time, you may find that things are not going as well as you

would like them to.

If school work is getting you down or you are having problems with other

students, or even something outside school is bothering you, please speak

to someone. This may be your Form Tutor, your Head of Year or another

teacher you feel you can talk to. We are here to help, so please tell us if

there is anything we can do.

Behaviour

We seek to recognise and reward those students who have a positive

attitude and embody the Ramsey Approach. Students who break rules,

misbehave or hinder the work of others can expect to be disciplined

firmly but fairly.

We use three broad levels when considering behaviour:

School colours are awarded for sport, to denote positive achievement

and excellent attitude, and a Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year is

awarded at the annual Sports Presentation Evening.

Prizegiving is held each Autumn when some 200 prizes are awarded for

academic achievement, progress and outstanding contributions to school

Level 1 Positive or negative behaviour is identified and managed by the

classroom teacher, using suitable professional strategies.

Level 2 A more noteworthy/serious behaviour event (positive or negative)

has taken place or a pattern of behaviour has continued/been

maintained.

The Subject/Team Leader is involved and will put rewards/

consequences into place.

Parents/carers are informed, where appropriate.

The event and the outcomes are added to the student

record.

Level 3 A significant behaviour event (positive or negative) has occurred

or a pattern of behaviour has been maintained for

a significant period of time, or across many subject areas.

School systems are involved. Rewards/consequences are put in

place.

Parents are required to be involved in dealing with the situation,

where appropriate.

The event and the outcomes are added to the student

record.

22

e-points

e-points is the reward system in place at Ramsey Grammar School.

Students are awarded e-points for good work, exemplary behaviour,

representing the school in sporting and/or arts events, as well as going the

extra mile. Students can ‘cash in’ these points at various times of the

year, trading them in for a variety of different rewards.

How do I earn e-points at RGS?

Each subject department has its own rules for awarding e-points. Your

subject teachers will be able to give you more information about this

when you start in September. There are also posters in classrooms with

more advice about how to earn e-points.

You are most likely to be awarded e-points if you:

contribute fully in lessons

make good use of your planner

support other students with their work

produce work that is of a high personal standard

Bullying

We believe bullying has no place in school. If you feel that another student

is behaving like a bully, you must tell your Form Tutor, Head of Year or

any adult in school.

We have a clearly stated anti-bullying policy and school staff are determined

to do all they can to prevent bullying situations arising and to deal effectively

and decisively with any incidents that occur.

23

Ramsey Grammar School Association All parents of students at Ramsey Grammar School are automatically members of the

school association.

We have an active and supportive RGSA which, through its social activities, raises

substantial amounts of money to support the work of the school. It has just provided

another new school minibus (which it does every three years) and has purchased

curtaining for the West Hall and Stage.

Details of RGSA events and the AGM, which takes place early in the new academic

year, are published monthly in the RGS Mail.

The RGS Mail

On the first Friday of every month in term time, we will publish an electronic

newsletter. This newsletter contains

up-to-date information about what is going on in school and important

forthcoming dates. Please make sure that this publication is read and important

dates are noted. Please also remember to access our school website for up to date

school information each week!

School Visits Off site visits are an important feature of Ramsey Grammar School life. We believe that

getting out of the school environment to learn is important. We hope that those students

who are new to the school will join in and participate at every opportunity.

Field trips for many subjects take advantage of numerous locations in the Isle of Man but

sometimes departments travel further afield.

During the year, there is a Modern Foreign Language exchange visit to Spain and in

Standalone Week, school parties regularly visit Holland, France and Belgium, as well as

locations in the UK.

On the sporting front, as well as regular fixtures against other island schools, the PE

department often takes sports teams across to the UK. We also have sporting trips to

Holland and the footballers

even go as far as California!

Music

The Music Department provides several opportunities for

performance including two Carol Services and concerts throughout

the school year.

RGS ensembles have recently taken part in both the Manx

Music Festival (The Guild) and Cruinnaght Aeg. The Creative Arts Department also puts

on regular productions, which allow students to participate in a number of different ways.

Instrumental instruction in strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, both electric and acoustic

guitars and also voice is available from the Department of Education and Children’s team of

visiting (peripatetic) teachers.

Students who have already received tuition at primary school should continue to attend

lessons as normal, whilst students who are keen to start learning should make themselves

known at the start of the year.

Current Peripatetic Staff

Extra-Curricular Activities At RGS, we actively encourage students to take part in extra-curricular activities, either during

lunchtimes and/or after school. There are so many exciting clubs you can join which can help

you to learn new skills, increase your confidence and help you to make new friends. The clubs

available include DIY Food Club, Film Club and Small Animals, or you could even try learning

a new sport, instrument or language!

Your Form Tutor can help you to find the right club for you and lists of activities can be found in

your Form room, on Year 7 noticeboards and on the website. Getting involved in clubs and RGS

school life is an excellent way to earn e-points too! There is more information about e-points on

page 22 of this booklet.

25

The Library

All students are automatically members of the School Library, with the new Year

7 students having a fun Library Induction at the beginning of the Autumn Term.

The Library is generally a quiet study area during lesson times, but is a very

vibrant and friendly space for students to use over lunchtime.

Students have access to laptops, iPads and Kindles and the Librarian and a team of

Student Librarians are there to help with most queries.

Students are encouraged to have a say in the purchase of resources for the

Library. We believe access to exciting and entertaining reading material is

essential in promoting literacy.

Mobile Phones and Mobile Electronic Devices

In acknowledgement of the increasing versatility of portable

technology, this section refers to all mobile phones and mobile

electronic devices such as iPods and media players and is linked to the

Ramsey Grammar School Behaviour Code.

Students are permitted to bring mobile phones and mobile electronic

devices to school but the expectation at Ramsey Grammar School is that

mobile phones and mobile electronic devices will not be used during

lesson time or between lessons. However , in specific circumstances,

mobile electronic devices may be used as an aid to learning and in such

cases, it is for the individual classroom teacher to make clear what

acceptable usage is in any particular lesson.

Students may use electronic devices to play music at break time and

lunchtime, except when walking around the corridors, lining up for

lunch or eating lunch in the Dining Rooms.

At no point should a mobile electronic device be used for

communication during the school day.

Students must respond positively to the requests of any member of staff

to remove, turn off or stop using their device; otherwise the device will

be confiscated and held in a school office for a parent or carer to collect.

27

School and Home

Personal Information

The information on the SIMS (School Information Management System)

Enrolment and Registration Form is very important as it gives us details

about students which we may need in case of emergency.

Absence and Holidays

If you know in advance that your child will be off school or if you are going

on holiday, please ask for a Request for Leave of Absence form at the West

Office so that official permission can be given by the Headteacher.

If your child is ill please contact school to let us know the reason and

approximately how long they will be away for. You should use the email

address [email protected]

This absence should then be followed by written confirmation when

your child returns to school.

If your child out of school for part of a day, then please send in an

appointment card or letter. Students should sign the ‘Student

Exeat’ book at the Office on the way out of the building and remember to

sign back in when they return to school.

Health Matters

Students who feel unwell whilst at school must speak to their Head of Year.

Most members of staff are qualified first-aiders and, if necessary,

the student can be referred to Ramsey Cottage Hospital.

It is important that school has up-to-date contact numbers in case of

emergencies.

The School Nurse sees students during the course of the year and offers a

weekly drop-in session to chat on an informal basis and offer medical advice.

No student should carry medication of any sort with them, other than an

inhaler. If medicine is needed during the day, it should be taken to the

School Office, labelled with the student’s name and dose and arrangements

will be made for the necessary administration.

28

Information for Parents - The Administration of Medicine in School

Whilst every effort should be made to regulate the timing of medication to avoid the ne-

cessity of taking it in school, we realise that this isn’t always possible. Should your child

require medication to be administered during school hours, we ask you to observe the

following conditions in order to ensure his or her well-being:

1. The medication should be delivered to the School Office by the parent.

2. The medicine container should be clearly labelled with the name of the student,

the name of the medication, the dose, the time of administration and the storage

instructions.

3. Parents must take responsibility to inform the school of any changes.

4. A parent should be readily contactable in case of need.

5. No student should ever carry medicines around school.

Information for Parents - Legislative Framework

Parents' Rights regarding Religious Education and Worship

Parents may request that their child be wholly or partly excused from attendance at:

a. Religious Education in the school

b. religious worship in the school or

c. both Religious Education and religious worship in the school

d. The student shall then be excused from such attendance accordingly, until the

request is withdrawn

Sex and Relationship Education

This is a compulsory element of our curriculum as defined in THE EDUCATION

(CURRICULUM) (NO. 2) ORDER 2004 of the 2001 Education Act.

Ramsey Grammar School believes that Sex Education is an

educational entitlement of all students and an integral part of each

student's emergence into adulthood.

We aim to encourage personal responsibility in all forms of

behaviour:

to encourage self-esteem

to encourage respect and consideration for others

to provide support and information for young people and their parents

Sex Education provides knowledge and encourages attitudes which will allow students to

manage their lives in a responsible and healthy way.
