Three Time JunoWinner DavidFrancey Returns to St. Joseph IslandRENOWNED FOLK SINGER David Francey will be returningto the Island on Friday, October 11th, as part of his 2013 FallTour. He played an outdoor show in the summer of 2012 at theTownship of St. Joseph Centennial Grounds, accompanied byguitarist MarkWestberg and guitarist/banjo-picker ChrisCoole.

This year Francey will bring songs from his tenth album, SoSayWe All, to the stage of the Richards Landing Town Hall, joined byWestberg, Coole, and celebrated Maritimemulti-instrumentalist Darren McMullen.

Fourteen years ago at the age of 45, Francey began an astonish-ing journey from manual labourer to award-winning folk trou-badour – renowned for writing with heart-wrenching honestyabout the struggles of the poor and working class. His newalbum reflects his own journey through a period of struggle.

That spirit of perseverance bursts from each song on thealbum, from the opening track “Rain” about the failure and re-birth of love to the bittersweet hymn “So SayWe All.” Captur-ing the dark times (“Pandora’s Box,”“Ordinary Man”) as wellas life’s shining moments (“Satellite,”“Blue Skies”), the albumis a perfect acoustic showcase of what makes Francey’s song-writing so special.

In concert David is a singer and a storyteller. His wry humourand astute observations combined with his openheartedsinging style have earned him a loyal following. Organizers ex-pect to be turning people away as seats are limited in the his-toric Richards Landing Town Hall. People are encouraged toget their tickets in advance by calling the Township of St.Joseph Office at 705-246-2625 to arrange for pick-up or deliv-ery.

This will be the third of four concerts in the 2013 RichardsLanding Concert Series sponsored by the Richards LandingArts & Cultural Events Committee and the Ontario Arts Coun-cil. The fourth and final concert will feature The O’Schraves onNovember 16th.

THIS COULD BE IT! With winter fast approaching, the St.Joseph Island Voyageurs Snowmobile Club might be calling itquits before the first snowflake falls ... unless we act to save it!

Ironically, at the Ontario Feder-ation of Snowmobile Clubs An-nual General Meeting just lastweekend, our Voyageurs werehonoured with a special plaquecommemorating the club’s 40thanniversary. Snowmobiling hasalways been a major winter ac-tivity in these parts, with ournetwork of well-groomed, sce-nic trails throughout the island.

Sadly, the club and those trailsmight not survive to see their41st year.

This crisis didn’t just suddenlypop up. It’s been building foryears and there’s no single, sim-ple cause. Since 1974, the clubhas worked with the island municipalities and several prop-erty owners to build and maintain a network of groomedtrails for snowmobilers’ use and enjoyment. All permissions

were conditional upon the use of these trails being limited towinter use only by snowmobiles with valid OFSC trail per-mits. Riders were also required to stay within the limits of theestablished trails.

Unfortunately, those agreementswere made prior to the explod-ing popularity of All Terrain Ve-hicles (ATVs) for all-year-longrecreational use. They were alsothreatened by a few irresponsiblesnowmobilers and ATV riderswho caused damage to the trailsand their surroundings, resultingin some owners refusing permis-sion for any further use of theirproperty.

In April 2007, Club PresidentJack Hore, with the cooperationof all four municipalities, arranged for opening up severalroad allowances to eliminate

crossing approximately 2,000 acres of private property, whichalso laid the groundwork for an expanded, all-seasons trailsystem.

Truly personal attention...Grooming one dog at a time - yours!

Professional dog grooming services for all breeds

Now, 40 years into its long and distinguished history, the clubis at a crossroads. Membership growth has not kept pace withthe need for new volunteers to help with trail maintenance, grooming and other club functions. With only a trickle ofnew members to help out, the same volunteers do all thework year after year, so that others can enjoy the trails. Theyneed some help!

That’s just one of many problems. Even without the ‘compe-tition’ from the appeal of all-season ATVs, snowmobiling hastaken several hits in recent years due to poor snow condi-tions and huge jumps in the cost of machines, insurance andfuel. Yet snowmobiling remains hugely popular as a leadingwinter activity – but less popular with most riders is thesteadily rising cost of trail permits. Many prefer to ride thetrails - which are groomed and maintained by the Voyageurs- ‘for free.’

Of course, that’s a province-wide problem. There are approx-imately 140,000 snowmobiles insured each year, yet an aver-age of only 50,000 riders buy trail permits. The mathcertainly doesn’t bode well for the future of the snowmobileclubs who maintain the trail systems.

When asked what the future might hold for the Voyageurs,Club President Jack Hore pulls no punches. “That will haveto be decided by the public. If we’re to continue, we needpeople to get involved!” he asserts. “We’re not asking anyoneto spend hours, days and nights out on the trails driving agroomer. Even a few hours a month helping to brush trails orfix signs would help tremendously.” he continues. It’s reallythe Chinese axiom of ‘many hands make light work’ and itmakes good sense.

So what’s YOUR take on the challenges facing our localsnowmobile club? What are the issues? What do you thinkcan be done to meet them and – perhaps more importantly –what can YOU do to help make that happen?

The club’s future (or lack of one) could ultimately be deter-mined at a special open meeting on Thursday, October 3rd atthe Voyageurs’ clubhouse, the old Jocelyn Hall at 1125 P Line, starting at 7:30. Everyone is invited. Be sure to attend andhave your own say on the issues.

You could be the key to the solution!

Thank You!Jocelyn Recreation would like to thank all our

incredible volunteers who assisted us withHarvest Festival. Volunteers are the back-bone
