Dear Friends,

Jewish tradition teaches us, “Everyone who cries and mourns over a worthy person is forgiven their own sins because of the honor they demonstrate toward another.”

Our memories today are a statement of the esteem and honor we feel toward our loved ones. Our grief is also an expression of the character and presence they brought into our lives. The living purposes of all whom we recall during this Yizkor Memorial Service continue to influence our own visions for life and meaning.

Our loved ones taught us that achieving our visions is one of life’s enduring challenges. All of us live our days imaging what we might become, what good may endure when we’re done. We set goals for ourselves. We work diligently and persistently.

At this sacred hour, we stand still to measure the realization of our dreams. We do this against the standards established by cherished kin who remain still vital to us.

Unfulfilled visions can linger among our few regrets. We think about those whom this memorial hour recalls with fondness, and sensitivity to what they did and did not complete during their days. Our memories teach us to take our visions for life to heart, and to pay them earnest heed.

We do cry over the worthy individuals we miss. We honor them not for self-absolution, but rather for the ability to forgive them, and ourselves, if we must. Memories are also prayers. As they help us to evaluate our own lives, they guide us toward more we hope to accomplish.

May our gentle grief this day cleanse us all before God’s presence as we each affirm our devotion to those we continue to remember and to love.

B’Shalom Rav,

Rabbi Ron Shulman

Yizkor Memorial Prayers

Four times each year, on Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Passover, and Shavuot we recite Yizkor Memorial Prayers. We do this because celebrating our holidays connects our personal and family lives to the continuing life and heritage of the Jewish people. We do this because the ritual of Yizkor allows us to express our people’s collective and shared memories in the most personal way possible. We each remember our parents, spouses, children, siblings, and loved ones. Their lives along with ours tell our people’s story.

This Yizkor tradition comes to us from an ancient rabbinic text. Interpreting this Torah verse, “Forgive, Eternal God, Your people Israel whom You redeemed” Judaism’s earliest sages taught that we recite Yizkor Memorial Prayers and give Tzedakah devoted to the memory of those we remember so that the “living may redeem the dead.”

We pray that our loved ones’ souls eternally rest in peace. We pray that our loved ones’ virtues live on in us. We pray that who we are and what we do today reflects well on those we love who lived before us.

Throughout our lives we can make choices so that we who are “living may redeem the dead.” We can choose to carry on family traditions. We can choose to maintain family relations. We can choose to inspire our families’ next generations.

And at the end of our lives, we can make choices that will enable our children and grandchildren to redeem us as they live on. We can be sure they appreciate the measure of our attainments. We can be sure they learn the lessons of our disappointments. We can affirm our pride in them and our confidence in their decisions. We can be open and honest about how we wish to live out our days.

We who live redeem our deceased loved ones because we are bound together with them in soul. We are their immortality and extension in life. We can make choices throughout our lives so that we who are “living may redeem the dead.” We can also make choices that help our children and grandchildren to redeem us as they live on.

Yizkor Reflections

Some of us, blessed with parents who are alive, have a custom of leaving the sanctuary when Yizkor Memorial Prayers are recited. This gesture gratefully reflects our respect.

Others of us, blessed with parents who are alive, have a custom of remaining in the sanctuary when Yizkor Memorial Prayers are recited. This gesture sensitively reflects our memories of other loved ones and honors the lives of those for whom no one else is present.

Memory's Purpose

We carry our love for those whom we miss with us at all times. In our memories we are always aware of them.

On this holy day as we reflect on our feelings for all those whom we recall, certain uneasiness again fills our hearts. The words and rituals seem surreal. Are we those who grieve? Are we really separated from those whom we so love?

Though the passing of time carries our loved ones away from us, we cannot let that time pass us by. Taking our time, we reclaim the routines of our own lives. We understand how ever present our beloved remain. Still, it is hard to get used to the idea that all of this is real.

The gentle wisdom of Jewish tradition embraces us. First there is Shiva. Then follows Sheloshim, Yahrzeit, and Unveiling. Today we recite Yizkor Memorial Prayers.

Each of these are moments in time with which we mark our grief’s progress and our memory’s purpose. In sacred observance we give our lives renewed perspective and meaning. Legacies are patterned in how we remember those whom we miss.

Our generations are bound to each other as we who are children remember our parents. Love is stronger than death as we who are spouses remember our partners, as we who are parents remember our children. Memory conquers death’s dominion as we now remember our brothers and sisters, grandparents, and other relatives and friends.

The death of those we remember left gaping holes in our lives. Still, we are ever grateful for the gift of their lives. We are strengthened by the blessings they left us and by precious memories which comfort and sustain us.

The first time we recite Yizkor Memorial Prayers, we are slow to gaze at the words. They’re not familiar. The Mourner’s Kaddish is better known. So, we read the words like new members in a select club. A group to which, unwillingly, we all gain admittance. We join the sacred cohort of children and spouses, parents and siblings, relatives and friends who recite the heartfelt hope of every Jewish generation, Yizkor Elohim. May God remember our loved ones’ souls that we may remember their lives and their love.

In Loving Memory of

The six million who perished in the Holocaust,Those who died defending the State of Israel,

and all who have fallen in the fight for freedom in America

May God remember the souls of our brothers and sisters, martyrs of our people, who gave their lives for the sanctification of God's name and the honor of Israel. May their bravery, dedication, and purity be reflected in our Lives.

May their souls be bound up in the bond of life. And may they rest eternally in dignity and peace. Amen.

Let us stand silent in memory of our dearly beloved sons and daughters who gave their lives for the liberation of our homeland and and the security of our people. They gave us all they had. They poured out their very lifeblood for the freedom of Israel, even as the living waters quench the thirst of the arid soil. Not in monuments of stones or trees shall their memories be preserved, but in the reverence and pride which will, until the end of time, fill the hearts of our people when their memory is recalled.

-David Ben Gurion

God-full source of compassion, by your presence through us, grant peace to them and remember the souls of all our beloved who have gone to their eternal rest. May their memories endure as inspiration for deeds of charity and goodness in all of our lives. May all that is worthy and righteous about them be remembered in life always as their souls are bound up in the bond of life. May they rest in dignity with our eternal love, and in peace. Amen.

Today we recite words of prayer and condolence taken from the wisdom and depth ofJewish experience. Among them is El Maleh Rahamim, a prayer that the bonds of family love and devotion, the closeness of friends, as well as our memories, may become the bonds oflife continually bringing us blessing and goodness.

As we recite these heartfelt words, may we consider ways to transform our love for those whom we recall into a new beauty within the lives we now lead. We acknowledge that so little separates us from them. Therefore, we pray to recognize our need for one another today. Together, let us seek faith, meaning and the comfort of trust for our own lives.

May we live, as our loved ones rest, in dignity, love, and peace.

There's No Going Back

There’s no going back. Even if we want to, we can’t. Even if we can, we don’t. We live in the goodness, or with the difficulty, of our memories. They compel us in so many ways.

We resist change in order to protect what was. We establish habits in order to preserve what is. We do this because we know the truth. There’s no going back.

Life is on-going. It evolves, as it must, and so do we. Without a sense of past and future, the present is empty. If our days are not limited our years cannot be measured. Our dreams and disappointments do not matter.

Except, they do. How we live and what we experience matters most of all. On each passing day all that we do and care about becomes more urgent and significant. Everything we hope for becomes sincerely more heartfelt.

A person who lives only in the past loses their life today. A person who lives only in search of their future misses out on life today. Right now, today we need to live.

This is what Yizkor is about. Though we miss them so, and wish we could update our loved ones on all that they’ve missed, there’s no going back. We live now. They lived then.

We are connected to them through all they did, and through all we do because of them. We may muse on how things are similar or different. We may yearn for something from the past or hope for something in the future. Still, we know. We are not them. Today is not then.

Reciting Yizkor Memorial Prayers in loving memory of those whom we miss, we honor their memories by dedicating ourselves to making new ones. With conviction and understanding we know. There’s no going back.

Life After Death

What happens after a loved one dies? What happens next in our lives after his or her death?

The world appears dark. It takes our genuine effort to find the light of another day. We feel alone in grief and sadness. We search for comfort in memory and recollection. We sense within the world of our own experience is changed forever.

Gradually, we see some light supported by the love of our families and friends. We begin to renew the spark of life within us. We also learn to be patient with our emotions and with ourselves. And then, eventually, it happens.

We realize the meaning inherent in our lives that death teaches. We discover a deeper purpose for our own continuing pursuits in the legacy of our loved one’s days. Saddened always, we grow strong. Remembering on all days, we move along the path of our own life’s journey.

We are not walking away from the life we shared together. Rather, we are walking toward a loving memory in which what we did share together matters even more. We regain our confidence. We find goodness and joy are present in our lives again. This is what happens after a loved one dies. This is what happens next in our lives after death.

We rue. We remember. We renew. We grieve. We grow. We greet the new.

Kindling the Yahrzeit Light

On the evening of the yahrzeit, and on days Yizkor Memorial Prayers are recited in synagogue, it is customary to light a 24-hour memorial candle and to let it burn the entire day. Though no special prayer or blessing is recited, you may read this kavanah-devotion and/or share your own reflections.

In loving memory, I/we remember our beloved ___________________________. In hushed reverence I/we kindle this memorial light grateful that who I/we remember remain(s) in my/our thoughts and sustain(s) my/our hopes.

The Psalms declare, “Ner Adonai Nishmat Adam – God’s light is the soul of every person.” As I/we kindle this light, I/we dedicate myself/ourselves to the truth that ___________________________’s life/lives and memory/memories will always radiate the Divine light of purpose and goodness.

May this memorial light reflect the love my/our loved one(s) shared with me/us in life for which I/we am/are eternally grateful. Thankful for the lives of all whom I/we cherish, I/we remember ____________________________ inspired by his/her/their memory/memories to live today and every day with compassion, honesty, and devotion to the heritage of my/our family and people.

Zikhrono livrakhah – May his memory endure as a blessing.Zikhronah livrakhah – May her memory endure as a blessing.Zikhronam livrakah – May each of their memories endure as a blessing.

May the glow of this light remind me/us of the significance which I/we strive to bring to my/our days blessed by the memories I/we recall at this quiet moment.

Memories Live and Memories Give

Memories live. They cannot replace a loved one’s presence nor fill the void we feel in their absence. But our memories do live. Our memories keep our loved ones among us. They remind us at all times of whom we miss and how important they remain to our own lives. The influence of those whom we remember from yesterday continues to shape our own experiences today. Our memories are real and the feelings they stir within us are genuine. Memories live.

Memories give. They provide the background for our choices and preferences. Our memories remind us of things we have done, joys we have shared and sorrows we have overcome. Each of our memories lays a foundation for a new discovery or opportunity. In memory the people whom we still love motivate our efforts and encourage us. Our memories also provide strength and courage. They guide us as we cope with challenges or difficulties. Memories give. Memories live and memories give. So do we. As we remember our loved ones, we seek to emulate our memories of them. We do this by leading lives of quality and giving of ourselves family, friends, and community. The life and gift of each of our memories can enrich us in the present moment connecting us to both the past we have known and the future we can only imagine. Memories live and memories give.
