1. Introduction

A large collection of medieval and later pottery was recovered from the Yearsley Moor site in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, North Yorkshire. At least 81% of the assemblage is formed by a group of locally produced pottery of probable 17th to early/mid 18th century date. This material includes a high proportion of misfired vessels together with a small number of identifiable wasted sherds. The pottery from the site is in variable condition with much of the assemblage being in a fairly fragmentary state, although some vessels are represented by large, joining sherds, in a fairly fresh condition. The main pottery types are presented here by approximate chronological type, discussing in full new fabric and form types. Detailed definitions of types already published elsewhere are not given and the reader is referred to the relevant reports.

2. Methodology

The pottery from this site was examined and recorded in accordance with the Medieval Pottery Research Group's Guidelines (Slowikowski 2001). Quantification was by three measures: number of sherds, weight and vessel count within each context (Appendix 1). Cross-context joining sherds were issued individual vessel numbers to facilitate an understanding of the site sequence, although despite extensive searching only six examples were located. The medieval pottery recovered was divided into ware types and sub-fabrics using a x20 binocular microscope.

3. The pottery

In total 809 sherds representing a maximum of 663 vessels in twenty-one identifiable post-Roman pottery ware types and two miscellaneous sherds were recovered from the site (Table 1). Most of the material is likely to have been produced within 20 km of the site but also includes vessels probably made in other parts of Yorkshire, as well as a small number of regional and three continental imports.

3.1.1 North Yorkshire Whitewares

Throughout the medieval and early post-medieval periods pottery production took place at a number of sites around the fringes of the North Yorkshire Moors. The earliest of these industries was producing a fineware type known as York Glazed ware (YORK) possibly by the late 12th century (Brooks 1987,), although a similar splash-glazed type may be of earlier date. This is the main medieval glazed ware found in deposits dating to the first half of the 13th century in York, hence the name (ibid.). No production sites have yet been found, although a source in the Hambleton Hills to the north of York is most likely. A single small sherd recovered from Site 3, Area 1, deposit 1 has been identified as this type. The sherd is from the neck of a small jug with a thick copper-mottled light green glaze and dates to the 13th century.

Waster tips and a series of superimposed kilns at the western edge of the village of Brandsby just north of Yearsley provide evidence for the production of another light firing

medieval glazed ware industry (Brooks 1987). There is also documentary evidence for potting in the village between the 14th and 16th centuries (Le Patourel 1968, 124), although the type was most probably made at several centres within North Yorkshire (Brooks 1987, 153-154 and Jennings 1992, 24-25). Brandsby-type ware is first thought to appear in York in deposits dating to the second half of the 13th century, where it is often difficult to distinguish from York Glazed ware and declines in the face of Humberwares during the second half of the 14th century (Brooks 1987, 153-4). Most of the vessels produced at Brandsby are jugs with a light to mid green glaze, but a number of other forms including jars, bowls and dishes were also produced. Sixty-five of the vessels recovered from the Yearsley site have a fabric microscopically similar to that of examples from the waster groups recovered from excavations at Brandsby (BRANS). Most of the sherds can be identified as coming from small to large-sized jugs but at least five jars are present in the group. Three of the jug sherds are decorated; two with roller-stamping and one with combed vertical decoration. Typologically the vessels recovered from this site are likely to be of mid 13th to 14th century date.

Visually another twenty-three vessels are of Brandsby-type, however microscopic examination at x20 reveals a coarser fabric than that of the Brandsby kiln samples, closer in fact to some of the York Glazed ware fabrics. These vessels have been termed Coarse Brandsby-type (BRANSC) and may represent a more local, or earlier, production of the type. Microscopic examination of this coarser type reveals common subround to round quartz grains of 0.2-0.4mm most of which are red-tinged together with moderate to common iron-rich grains. Form, manufacture and glazing technique is similar to that of the other Brandsby vessels, although the use of copper in the glaze seems more common. Five of the vessels from this site appear to be unglazed jars. Two of the sherds appear to have been misfired or burnt.

Three light-firing sherds are of general whiteware type (NYW). Two of the sherds come from jugs, one of which has applied vertical strip decoration, and one comes from a jug or jar. All three vessels are of 13th to 14th century date.

3.1.2 Local Medieval Sandy wares

Quartz-tempered fabrics, thought to be made in the region and not falling within the definition of York or Brandsby-type wares are included here. Two wheel-thrown sherds found in deposit 16 in Area 1 on Site 3 are probably from a fairly local source (MEDLOC) and could date anywhere between the 13th and 15th centuries. One sherd in an unglazed coarse sandy fabric comes from a small jar. The other sherd is very abraded but probably comes from a jug with a copper-green glaze. This jug sherd is in an off-white medium to coarse sandy fabric which contains quartz similar to that found in the Coarse Brandsby-type ware and may just represent a coarse end of the type. Both sherds can only be dated to a general 13th to 15th century medieval date.

3.1.3 Humberware

Humberware (HUM) was defined as a fine red earthenware whose silty fabric is a result of the use of either post-glacial lacustrine clays or marine/esturine clays in the Humber

wetlands (Hayfield 1992). Production was thought to be confined to the Humber Basin with kilns producing Humberware being excavated at West Cowick (Mayes 1964) and Home-on-Spalding Moor (Hayfield 1980) in East Yorkshire. More recently kilns producing Humberware have been found at Blue Bridge Lane at Fishergate in York (Vince 2005c) and Healey, North Yorkshire (Sage forthcoming) and the wide range of fabrics found suggests that there are more to be discovered. This Humberware tradition lasts from the late 13th to the 16th century (Watkins 1987) and is the dominant ware to be found on sites in Beverley (Didsbury and Watkins 1992), Hull (Watkins 1987) and York (Brooks 1987) throughout most of the late medieval period. The two sherds recovered from this site are unlikely to be East Yorkshire products and come from jugs of general 14th to mid 16th century date.

3.1.4 Coal Measure wares

A single sherd from a large jug in a White Coal Measures fabric (CMW) was recovered from deposit 1 in Area 1 on Site 3. In South Yorkshire and Derbyshire there was a widespread tradition of using white-firing Coal Measure seatearth clays from the medieval to early post-medieval periods (Cumberpatch 2003). Such clays also occur in West Yorkshire and were probably also utilised. Visually this jug is unlike vessels produced at known centres in South Yorkshire (pers. comm. C Cumberpatch) and it may therefore be a West Yorkshire product.

3.1.5 Other regional wares

Two sherds are likely to be regional imports. The earliest of these was recovered from deposit 1 in Area 1 on Site 3 and comes from a jug with a ‘splashed-type’ glaze. This Beverley 1-type jug (BEVO1T) is likely to be of early to mid/late 12th century date and is copying in both style and fabric fine wheel-thrown vessels produced in Beverley in East Yorkshire from the 12th to early/mid 13th centuries (Didsbury and Holbrey 2009). A jug or jar sherd in a light orange medium sandy fabric may be a regional import or an usual local product. The sherd can only be dated to the general medieval period. 3.2 Post-medieval

3.2.1 The Local Coarse Wares The bulk of the ceramic material recovered from the site is in a fine light oxidised to oxidised fabric known as Ryedale ware (RYDALE). The type was manufactured in the Hambleton Hills and the Ryedale areas of North Yorkshire between the later 16th and early 18th centuries (Vince 2002). The type is most common in the later 16th to 17th centuries (Brooks 1987, 162-3), but has been found in groups of early to mid 18th century date at several sites including an early 18th century well group at Bridlington (Earnshaw and Watkins 1984, 45-52).

There is little microscopic fabric variation amongst the 537 vessels recovered from this site, although a lighter firing and slightly finer buff to light orange fabric seems to be a more common choice for more specialised vessels such as mugs, jugs and chafing dishes. The overwhelming majority of sherds come from large, usually cylindrical jars (DR4, DR9, DR16

and DR18-19). This ware type is found throughout most of North Yorkshire and in the major urban centres of York and Hull where it spans the period between the late 16th and early/mid 18th centuries (Brooks 1987, 162-3). There is no doubt that it is this type being produced by the Wedgwood family in Yearsley in the 17th and 18th centuries. A number of sites in North Yorkshire are known to have been producing this type of pottery with Stearsby, near to the medieval kiln site of Brandsby (Hayes 1978) being the most commonly known example. The vessels from this site are wheel-thrown and quite competently potted although the distinctive reduced olive green glaze can often be pitted.

Many of the sherds recovered from this site exhibit traces of misfiring, although without the whole vessel being present it is not possible to determine if these faults rendered them totally unfit for use. Even modern potters sell or utilise vessels that have distorted, cracked or under-fired in the kiln. The most common fault appears to be low firing with the glaze failing to fully mature. A few sherds can confidently be classed as wasters as they have spalled off the main part of the vessel during firing in the kiln. Thirty percent of vessels recovered from the site are cylindrical jars of mostly large size (usually with a rim diameter of 20-24cm). These jars mainly have simple rounded upright rims sometimes with a neck cordon (DR9) and are often handled (DR4). No examples were recovered from the site but it is likely that the jars may have had two handles. One of these large jars has a simple bunghole turning it into a cistern (DR 1). The handles are of the pulled strap type and narrow towards the lower handle join. The upper part of the handle is pressed directly onto the rim. Almost every jar is internally glazed with a reduced green glaze, often applied over a thin white slip. Some jars have a bright copper-green glaze, in which case, the white slip is often thicker. A few examples also have an external glaze over the top two thirds of the jar. None of these cylindrical jars are decorated suggesting that they belong to the later part of the production as earlier late 16th to mid 17th century vessels in this tradition are often ornamented with pressed strips around the neck. The thick bases of these jars are often covered in scars from the use of spacers to separate the vessels during stacking in the kiln. The scars of rims from other vessels that have stuck to the underside of the bases show that the vessels were being fired upside-down in the kiln with jars spanning two bases. Another 18% of vessels are jars of some sort but the body sherds are too small to determine type. Amongst these are seven small jars or pipkins, a footed pipkin and the profile of a small straight-handled pipkin (DR2).

Bowls and dishes are the second most common vessel type found in the Ryedale ware recovered from the site. The large bowls are not of the deep pancheon type but are rather a wide shallow sloping type. These bowls tend to have a thick internal and external glaze and are commonly heavily knife-trimmed around the lower body. At least one of these large bowls has a side handle (DR8). Few bowls below 20cm. diameter occurred in the group. The three large dishes (DR 7, 11 & 12) range between 24cm and 30cm rim diameter in size and include one example (DR11) that may be a waster as the firing crack is quite significant and glaze has bled across the break.

Jugs are not a common form in Ryedale ware but at least fourteen examples occur (DR5) with another nineteen vessels most probably being jugs. The jugs have thick internal and external glazes, usually over a thick white slip or on a light firing body giving a yellow to light green glaze. Handles are either of the narrow or oval strap type. Some of these jugs may be intended for drinking as a few neck sherds seem to be copying the shape of German

stoneware drinking jugs and some vessels are obviously either small jugs or mugs. The single identifiable mug profile is of a rounded drinking jug type in an off-white fabric with a light green internal and external glaze (DR3). Another mug rim in an orange fabric has a thick internal and external reduced green glaze (DR21). A small basal sherd in a buff fabric with an internal glaze may be from a cup. More unusual forms include a small conical lid, a colander and four chafing dishes (DR14 and DR20).

Three brown-glazed earthenware vessels (BERTH) of mid 17th to 18th century type may be of local production. Two of the vessels are cups, one of which is missing the handle which appears to have spalled off. The other sherd is from a jug with a streaky misfired internal and external glaze and firing cracks with glaze partially across the break.

3.2.2 The finewares

A small number of post-medieval fineware vessels, mainly intended for drinking or dining were recovered from the site. A single Cistercian ware cup sherd was recovered from deposit 1 in Area 3 on Site 3. The vessel is low-fired in a fine orange-red fabric and has a thick internal and external brown glaze. This cup is of late 15th to 16th century type and may be a local product as Cistercian-type wares are reported to have been amongst the pottery wasters recovered from Soury Hill, Yearsley during excavations between 1936-9 (Brears 1971). Two vessels in light firing fabrics without an additional slip have a yellow glaze (YY). These vessels have been termed Yellow-glazed ware and are similar to both the yellow wares produced in the midlands (Midlands Yellow ware) and vessels produced at centres such as Wrenthorpe in Yorkshire (Moorhouse and Roberts 1992, 95) between the 16th and 17th centuries. The two vessels recovered from this site are likely to be Yorkshire products with the small undiagnostic sherd found in deposit 9 in Area 1 on Site 3 possibly being a local product. Two sherds are from a single cup, possibly similar in shape to Wrenthorpe examples (Moorhouse and Roberts 1992).

Four dishes in fine oxidised fabrics are likely to be local slipwares (SLIP) including the large dish recovered from deposit 1 in Area 1 on Site 3 that is in a fabric similar to that used for the light firing Ryedale vessels. This dish is in a fine orange fabric and has an internal thick dark reduced glaze with trailed white linear slip decoration. Two of the other dishes are also decorated with slip-trailing. Three of the dishes are of mid 17th to 18th century type but the dish found in deposit 16 in Area 1 on Site 3 is more typical of mid/late 17th to 18th century production.

Seven sherds representing three vessels are similar to two Staffordshire-type mid or late 17th to 18th century slipwares (STMO and STSL). The single Mottled ware sherd found on the site (STMO) is in a fabric similar to that used for the local Ryedale vessels. The small sherd comes from a mug or cup. Five sherds from four different deposits come from a single Staffordshire-type Slipware mug (STSL). The mug is in a cream fabric and has an external red slip over the cream fabric giving a dark brown glaze. The exterior of the vessel is decorated with yellow slip-trailed decoration. This vessel links deposits in Areas 1 (deposit 15), 2 (deposit 1) and 3 (deposits 1 and 11) on Site 3. It is quite probable that all of the Staffordshire-type Slipware examples found on this site are Yorkshire products, some of which may actually have been made locally.

Five sherds from a single cup in a cream fabric (DR10) and a small sherd in a fine red fabric from a similar cup are in Yorkshire Slip-coated ware (YSLC). The vessels have a slip coating to give a contrast between the glaze and body colour. For one cup (DR10) this has been fully exploited internally to give a tortoiseshell or mottled effect. The external surface of this cup is a dark brown and the vessel has yellow in-fill within an incised design externally. Similar vessels were recovered from a probable late 17th to 18th century production site at Scales, North Yorkshire (Young 2011). This vessel also links Areas 1 (deposits 1 and 16) and 3 (deposit 11).

A single tiny and very abraded sherd from a Tin-glazed Earthenware vessel (TGW) was recovered from deposit 11 in Area 3 on Site 3. The sherd is from a small hollow ware vessel and is of 17th to 18th century date. Three Frechen-type German Stoneware drinking jug sherds (FREC) were recovered from Area 1 on Site 3. The vessels are of 17th century type and come from deposits 16 and 18.

3.2.3 Stonewares

Two brown stoneware (BS) and four white stoneware vessels (STSL) were recovered from the site. The two Brown Stoneware sherds are both from mugs; one of which is decorated with complex incised decoration (DR15). The vessels in a light brown salt-glazed fabric similar to that produced in North Staffordshire from the late 17th to 18th centuries but could be products of kilns in Yorkshire. Typologically the two mugs are likely to be of early to mid 18th century date.

The six Staffordshire-type White Salt-glazed sherds (SWSG) recovered from the site all come from cylindrical mugs and are of early type. The sherds are all in oatmeal to grey fabrics and appear to come from four different vessels but it is possible that they are from a single mug and that the visually different body colours are due to burial conditions. These sherds are likely to be of early/mid 18th century date.

4. Site sequence

The ceramic assemblage examined came from a small number of deposits on Sites 2 and three areas on Site 3. Most of the pottery was recovered from Areas 1 (480 sherds) and 3 (296 sherds) on Site 3. The site was hand excavated by volunteers under archaeological supervision as part of the North York Moors National Park’s ‘Lime and Ice’ initiative.

4.1 Site 2

Five sherds of Ryedale pottery representing four vessels were recovered from two deposits on Site 2. Deposit 105 contained two light firing sherds from the rim of a single chafing dish (DR20). The vessel has simple knobs and is glazed internally and externally with a thick almost opaque yellow-green glaze. The other two vessels are a mug (DR21) and a bowl with an internal copper-green glaze. These vessels appear to represent an earlier Ryedale tradition and possibly date to the 17th century. Deposit 114 produced a single undiagnostic sherd from a Ryedale jar of general 17th to 18th century date.

4.2 Site 3

The topsoil was excavated as deposit 1 across all three areas with Areas 1(172 sherds) and 3 (167 sherds) producing the most pottery. A few cross-joining sherds link these three areas of topsoil suggesting perhaps that some of the material may have been deposited at the same time and then spread out. The composition of the pottery recovered from the topsoil in Area 3 however is significantly different from that recovered from other groups found on the site. In Area 1 83% of the vessels recovered are in 17th to 18th century Ryedale ware. A small number of medieval vessels including the 12th century Beverley 1 type jug occur in the group. The latest closely dateable sherds come from an early/mid 18th century Staffordshire-type White Salt-glazed Stoneware mug. In the Area 3 topsoil group 49% of the vessels recovered are of 13th to 14th century date and some of the Ryedale vessels recovered are not typical of the rest of the site. This difference may suggest that Area 3 is closer to any potential high medieval occupation. The latest sherds however are similar to those found in Area 1. Area 2 topsoil contained only Ryedale ware and sherds from two Staffordshire-type slipware drinking vessels.

Streambed deposit 9 in Area 1 produced twenty-seven single sherd vessels. Twenty-three of these vessels are of Ryedale type including large cylindrical jars, bowls, dishes and a colander. The latest vessel in the group is a Brown Stoneware mug with complex incised decoration (DR15). This mug is likely to be of early to mid 18th century date.

Rubble layer 16 in Area 1 produced a large group of 178 sherds representing a maximum of 130 vessels, most of which are in Ryedale ware. Several of these Rydale vessels, are represented by numerous large fresh sherds, suggesting primary deposition. Other post-medieval pottery types include slipwares, brown-glazed earthenware and two imported 17th century German Frechen stoneware drinking jugs. The group also includes three residual medieval vessels. The Ryedale ware vessels are mainly large cylindrical jars but the group also includes bowls, pipkins, jugs and a possible chafing dish. The latest dateable sherds are of general mid 17th to 18th century date. There are cross-joining sherds to the topsoil in Area 1 and the upper wheel pit layer 11. Forty-six sherds representing thirty-nine vessels were recovered from rubble layer 18 in Area 1. With the exception of a sherd from a 17th century German stoneware drinking jug all of the vessels are in Ryedale ware. The group is mixed but most vessels are large cylindrical jars, several of which are represented by large fresh sherds. Other vessel types include smaller jars, jugs, bowls and a small conical lid. No closely dateable vessels are present in the group.

Pottery was recovered from two fills of wheel pit 33 (fills 11 and 15). Lower fill 15 produced forty-seven sherds representing forty-one vessels. With one exception all of the vessels are of Ryedale type. Most vessels are large cylindrical jars but the group also includes bowls, jugs and other jars. The latest dateable vessel in the group is a Staffordshire-type Slipware mug, sherds of which were also recovered from the upper fill 11 and topsoil in Areas 2 and 3. This mug is of mid 17th to 18th century date. The forty-seven sherds recovered from the upper fill 11 represent forty-four vessels. The group is more diverse than that from layer 15 and includes three slipware vessels, brown and white salt-glazed stoneware mugs and a Tin-glazed Earthenware sherd. The Ryedale vessels are similar to those recovered from the lower layer 15. There are cross-joining sherds to the lower fill 11, layer 30 in Area 3, rubble

layer 16 and topsoil in Areas 2 and 3. The presence of a White Salt-glazed mug suggests a post early/mid 18th century date for deposition.

Layer 30 produced a group of eighty-two sherds representing fifty-five Ryedale vessels and one Staffordshire-type White Salt-glazed Stoneware mug sherd. Most of the Ryedale vessels are large cylindrical jars but the group also includes jugs and bowls. The presence of the White Salt-glazed mug suggests a post early/mid 18th century date for deposition.

5. General discussion

The pottery recovered from this site ranges in date from the medieval to the early modern periods, although the majority of the material comprises locally made coarse earthenwares of probable 17th to mid 18th century date. The main pottery type recovered (Ryedale ware) belongs to a widespread tradition of domestic post-medieval earthenwares that emerged in the late 16th century when the changing role of ceramics within the household resulted in an increased range of forms in use. This ‘country pottery’ continued to be produced in some country areas into the 20th century. Small country craft potteries once existed over much of England until pottery from the large industrial centres became readily available in the 19th century. Coupled with an improvement in the standard of living for many and increased purchasing power, many people chose to buy the new and increasingly cheaper industrially produced wares. The craft tradition persisted in a few areas especially in the north and west of England where the demand for locally produced utilitarian vessels for the house, dairy, garden and farmyard remained strong. Most of the vessels produced by these potters were designed for the preparation, cooking or storage of food or drink in the rural home. These vessels could be manufactured using local resources as part of a mixed agrarian economy without the need for substantial investment. Production of this type of pottery probably ceased in Yearsley with the departure of John Wedgwood to pot in Heworth in York in the early 18th century.

The large assemblage of Ryedale pottery from this site cannot unfortunately be closely dated due to the conservative nature of the pottery and the lack of independent dating. The bulk of the assemblage does not resemble the earliest Ryedale types that occur in late 16th century groups elsewhere, neither is it similar to later 18th to 19th century coarseware types found in the area. Little work has taken place on the characterisation of Ryedale form and attribute (rim shapes, decorative traits and manufacturing details etc.) types so it is not possible to put the material from this site into a chronological framework. In theory the group could span the whole of the period between the 17th and mid 18th centuries and thus represent over 100 years of occupation on the site. Against this probability is the nature of the group overall. The assemblage has a consistency that suggests that most of the vessels represent a single period of production. The main form type present is a large cylindrical jar whose most probable use was for brewing. There is little evidence for the post-firing use of these vessels and even the few recorded instances of ‘wear marks’ on the basal edge may be due to the potter attempting to produce a saleable vessel from one that has stuck to another during firing (pers com. John Hudson). Direct evidence for wastage is scant but does include two instances of severe firing cracks with glaze across the broken edges and three distorted vessels. Other sherds have more minor firing cracks, or in one case the handle of a large cylindrical jar has completely blown off during firing and the handle scar is covered in a thick glaze. The most common firing fault seems to be the failure to fully mature

the internal glaze on the vessels and this could have potentially led to lead poisoning if the vessels were used for an acidic liquid. This lack of obvious wasters is not uncommon in discarded pottery thought to be unfit for sale. In Lincoln, the St. Marks kiln site produced over 55,000 sherds, less than 500 of which, were obviously wasted. The assemblage from the Moor Wood site quite possibly represents discarded kiln material from a mid 17th to mid 18th century production mixed together with some domestic vessels. The latest pottery types to be found on the site are of early/mid to mid 18th century date and these vessels link the fills of the wheel pit to the topsoil layer suggesting that the site may have been levelled in this period. Any kiln waste could of course be of earlier date. A parallel for this is at Scales, North Yorkshire, where waste of early to mid 18th century date was deposited as part of demolition rubble over a post-medieval building between the late 18th and early 19th centuries in an isolated rural spot with no other evidence for potting (Young 2011).

A pottery kiln at Soury Hill near Yearsley was recorded during excavations in the 1930’s (Brears 1968), although reference to the finding of waste pottery was first made in the mid 19th century when Sir George Wombwell dug clay on his estate for use in his tilery (ibid). The pottery from Soury Hill is of late medieval to early post-medieval type (thought on excavation to date to between the late 15th and early 16th centuries) and is recorded to have included Cistercian-type wares. A John Wegwood of the Staffordshire family is recorded in the 1653 Coxwold parish registers as marrying into the local Harrison family. Given the date it is possible that he found himself in Yorkshire during civil war activity and married a local girl. It appears that John, and later his son, also a John and then his grandson William engaged in making pottery in Yearsley between the mid 17th and early 18th centuries. The range of pottery types made include large cisterns, jars, bowls, jugs and dishes in ‘Ryedale’ ware. A puzzle jug marked ‘John Wedg Wood 1691’ is in the Victoria and Albert museum and a cistern at Ampleforth Abbey has ‘John Wedg Wood’. scratched on the side. The great grandson of the original John is the John Wegwood who moved the pottery to York in the early 18th century.

6. Recommendations

This assemblage is of both local and regional importance and should be kept for future study. The material has been processed to an exceptionally high standard by the volunteer group and is in a stable condition. Twenty-one vessels should be illustrated and a short article with these illustrations should be prepared. The full catalogue should enable any more detailed research to take place.
