THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM

The Academic Program is YUELI’s university prepara on program. It is a full- me, 7 level* program for non-na ve speak-ers of English. Levels 1-3 focus on helping build a solid founda on of English profi ciency in all four language skills:reading, wri ng, listening and speaking. Levels 4-6 focus on the kinds of language, cri cal thinking and study skills require to be a successful student in a university or college se ng where English is the language of instruc on.

Each course in the Academic Program is 8 weeks in length. The program consists of 20 hours of instruc on per week (off ered in two me slots daily: 9am to 1pm or 1:15pm to 5:15pm, Monday to Friday), including a choice of seminars to accommodate students’ specifi c learning needs. Students will be placed in a morning or a ernoon session, depending on their placement level. The usual class size is 12-16.

Comple on of Level 6 of the Academic Program meets the English Lan-guage Profi ciency Requirement to enter most of York University’s un-dergraduate and some graduate programs.

Conversa on Partners provide students with opportuni es every week to prac- ce their spoken English with Canadian students. Level 4-6 students can also at-

tend university lectures and a end workshops on University Life Skills, including listening skills, presenta on skills, and strategies for taking the York English Lan-guage Test (YELT).

YUELI’s Linguis c Mix Policy ensures that English is the language of communica- on within the diverse linguis c backgrounds of the student popula on.

Social and Cultural Ac vi es allow students to socialize with other par cipants in the course, a end cultural events, and visit places of interest in and around Toronto. Students can choose from a variety of ac vi es such as a trip to Niagara Falls or the CN Tower or joining the soccer or coff ee club.

Condi onal Admission is available to most undergraduate programs at York University through the YUELI Academic English Program if students meet the academic requirements to enter York University.

Pre-Academic Program

The Pre-Academic Program class is designed to help those students without any or with only very basic English language skills to improve these skills be-fore entering YUELI’s Academic Program. The Pre-Academic Program is 8 weeks long and will focus on the basics of English language skills including (as required) the alphabet, numbers, basic expressions, sentence structure, and speaking, listening, reading and wri ng skills. Students who successfully com-plete the Pre-Academic Program class will progress to Level 1 of the Academic Program.

THE YUBRIDGE PROGRAM

Earn University credit and study English at the same me!

York’s YUBridge Program designed for high-achieving interna onal high school graduates, combines English language instruc on with academic credit courses. Students with high grade point averages (80% or be er) who have achieved a minimum of 5.0 on the IELTS test can enroll for up to 9 credits of Liberal Arts or Science and En-gineering courses, so that by the end of the 8-month program, they have achieved the required level of English to enter York’s degree programs and, at the same me, can move forward with 6 or 9 credits on their academic transcripts.

Before arriving in Canada, YUBridge students will be condi onally admi ed to a York degree program, the condi on requiring suc-cessful achievement of York’s language profi ciency requirements. Students can start the YUBridge in one of three yearly program in-takes: in January, May and September.

What makes the YUBridge program special? First, interna onal stu-dents can study for academic credit even if their English profi ciency is s ll rela vely low (IELTS 5.0 or equivalent). Second, they enter and study in a cohort, which means that each academic course is taught by faculty as a dis nct sec on, exclusively for YUBridge stu-dents. Faculty are specially selected for their ability to work with interna onal students, and students will have opportuni es in class to revise their academic work with their instructors and classmates.

Liberal Arts and Professional Studies Op on

Comple on of a minimum of two 3-credit (and up to 9 credits in total) courses in the same period, selected from the following:

• One 3-credit undergraduate course in Economics (Introduc on to Microeconomics, ECON1000 3.0) in the fi rst semester.

• One 3-credit undergraduate course in Economics (Introduc on to Macroeconomics, ECON1010 3.0) in the second semester.

• Second semester op on: One 3-credit undergraduate course in Philosophy (Meaning of Life, PHIL1100 3.0).

Science and Engineering Op on

Comple on of a minimum of two 3-credit (and up to 9 credits in total) courses in the same period, selected from the following:

• One 3-credit undergraduate course in Mathema cs (Applied Calculus I, MATH1013, 3.0) in the fi rst semester.

• One 3-credit undergraduate course in Mathema cs (Applied Calculus II, MATH1014, 3.0) in the second semester.

• Second semester op ons: One 3-credit undergraduate course in Economics (Introduc on to Microeconomics, ECON1000 3.0 or Introduc on to Macroeconomics, ECON1010 3.0).

DESTINATION YORK

The Des na on York Program is a fast-track program designed to help high school graduates to prepare for study at York University in Toronto. This program focuses on the language skills required to succeed in York undergraduate courses. Gradua ng high school students who are eligible to join Des na on York will be among a select group of high achievers who are mo vated to improve their academic English skills.

Over the 8 weeks of the program, students will be expected to complete a variety of reading, wri ng, listening and speaking ac- vi es. Students will learn how to analyze academic readings for

main ideas, strong arguments, logical fl aws, style and bias. They will also learn how to comprehend key ideas in seminar and lec-ture format presenta ons, to improve their note-taking skills, to write a research paper with a clear thesis, suppor ng evidence, acceptable quota on and paraphrasing techniques appropriate to the level of academic essay wri ng. All assignments will be monitored and checked by a team of instructors with strong back-grounds in teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP).

Eligibility Requirements

• Have graduated from high school and be academically admissible.• Have a ained a language test score of at least IELTS 6 OR TOEFL iBT 79 OR TOEFL paper 550, or a ain a suitable grade on a YUELI language test. Students who successfully complete the 8-week English language training program with the required grade to enter their chosen faculty and have received a condi onal admission off er to York University will then proceed to undergraduate studies.

PRE-GRADUATE PREPARATION PROGRAM

The York Pre-Graduate Prepara on Program is designed for interna onal students who are interested in a ending gradu-ate studies at North American universi es.

First TermThe fi rst term focuses on improving students’ general and academic English skills to a level that enables them to func on successfully in a graduate program. It also introduces students to the prac cal considera ons of doing research, of nar-rowing a research focus; of choosing an ins tu on, department and supervisor that specialize in that area of research; and of applying to graduate school.

Second TermThe second term focuses on the research; cri cal reading and wri ng skills that are required to succeed in Master’s and PhD programs. It examines the signs of good research, typical research ques ons and these statements. It also examines literature reviews through various media—academic journals, books, internet searches, documentaries and interviews - while also reviewing basic types of research, exploratory and problem-solving research among them.

Final ProjectAt the end of the second term, par cipants will prepare an independent academic-professional communica ons project.No classes will run during this period, but there will be workshops, and program instructors will keep offi ce hours for individual appointments. This project is intended to be a collec on of documents for par cipants’ future use. The types of documents it includes are those that working professionals today are asked to produce repeatedly throughout their careers. Par cipants will be able to revisit and update this por olio, as a ma er of professional refl ec ve prac ce, in the future. Successful comple on of YP3 will partly depend on comple on of this project in the allo ed me.

• Comple on of an undergraduate degree

• IELTS score of at least 5.5, or a TOEFL iBT of at least 69 (TOEFL CBT, 196; TOEFL Paper, 525) or an overall average of 68% on a YUELI placement test.

PRE-MBA PROGRAM

This is a full- me, 8 week program designed to prepare graduate level students, who have high intermediate to ad-vanced English, to study for an MBA at North American universi es. YUELI’s teaching facili es are located a short walk from York University’s Schulich School of Business, which is consistently ranked as Canada’s top MBA school.

Teaching and classroom ac vi es focus on all elements of language learning (reading, wri ng, listening, speaking) especially as these apply to the language of the business world. The course will also focus on specifi c academic and business-related areas, such as improving business report wri ng, research, case study analysis, leadership and pre-senta on skills.

Students who have successfully completed an undergraduate degree and an acceptable English Language Test are eligible to apply. For admission, you must complete one of these language test requirements:

YUELI PART-TIME COURSES

YUELI Part- me courses are short programs, with 4 hours per week of direct instruc on and addi onal work to be com-pleted out-of-class. They are focused on a specifi c aspect of English, with a ghtly organized curriculum and stated learn-ing outcomes that provide a clear indica on of what the course is about and what par cipants can expect. All YUELI Part-Time courses are taught by highly-qualifi ed and experienced ESL instructors and use up-to-date materials, technologies and instruc onal techniques. To permit individual feedback, class size is limited to 16 students.

Speaking English & Pronuncia on Program

YUELI’s Speaking English & Pronuncia on Program is for intermediate/advanced English language learners. In each session, par cipants will discuss a reading, work with vocabulary, become familiar with idioms and less formal language, explore ideas, and make short presenta ons. The instructor will review certain grammar points; however, the primary focus is on increasing confi dence and fl uency in English, while speaking about a wide range of interes ng topics. This course also includes pronuncia on prac ce that focuses on tricky conso-nants and vowels, open and closed syllables, stress at the word and sentence level, contrac ons, reduc ons and linking, and working with changes in pitch and tonality. Registrants for this course should already have a good grasp of English and a keen interest in developing and enhancing their speaking and pronuncia on skills.

Applying to Graduate School Program

Are you a university graduate and interested in going to an English speaking university/college? Are you unsure what to do or how to prepare? If so, this may be what you need. This course includes advice and guidance on how to prepare for university/college and what kinds of skills are needed for that stage. Applying to Graduate School allows current students to discuss means of prepara on for the upcoming university/college experi-ence. Wri ng personal statement le ers, understanding school requirements and understanding the applica- on process are some of many skills covered in over 6 weeks.

IELTS Prepara on

This class aims to introduce students to and familiarize them with the structure of the IELTS test and provide materials for prac ce in all areas of the test. In addi on, the course is designed to equip students with eff ec ve (Listening/Reading/Speaking/Wri ng) skills and strategies needed to undertake the exam with confi dence. Students will also be provided with regular oral/wri en feedback and advice from the instructor(s).

Let’s get serious about learning English!The YUELI SLP teaching team is serious about helping you improve your English. Whether you join the SLP for two weeks, four weeks, or the full eight weeks, we are confi dent that you will graduate with a much higher level of English than when you enrolled in the program.

Our teachers have considerable exper se in working with interna onal groups of students and in understanding their specifi c English language requirements.

The SLP has two main goals. One is to help students gain a be er grasp of Academic English skills, par cularly cri cal reading and wri ng skills. The other is to improve students’ overall speaking fl uency and listening comprehension skills, but all language skills, including pronuncia on, grammar and vocabulary building, are covered.

Students who join the program are typically at a lower to upper inter-mediate level of English and are placed in one of three levels: lower intermediate, intermediate and upper intermediate.

SLP instructors are expected to provide detailed feedback on every in-class ac vity. The feedback will include ps on grammar, pronuncia- on, vocabulary and other language points. SLP students are assessed

weekly in all language skill areas. Students are encouraged to become ac ve learners, to work with their teachers to iden fy strengths and weaknesses and to adopt strategies to address these.

Our in class program is a key part of our program, but we also know that students can learn a lot by par cipa ng in ac vi- es. Our Summer Language Program includes a variety of extracurricular ac vi es , and a variety of a er class clubs allow

students to interact with Canadian students. It is an ongoing experience.

Academic Lectures

SLP students also have the opportunity to a end aca-demic lectures during the program, two to four mes a week. The lectures will be given by either York Uni-versity professors or YUELI instructors on a variety of topics, which, depending on availability, will range from business to history, from literature to economics.

ListeningOur listening materials and ac vi es give students access to diff erent voices, characters, accents, dialogues and situa ons. Students have opportuni es to prac ce on their own and through pair and group discussions, communi-ca on games, prepared talks, simula on and role play.

Reading & Wri ngStudents also have plenty of opportuni es to work on their reading and wri ng skills.

SpeakingClassroom speaking ac vi es are student-centred, meaning that everyone has plenty of opportuni es to prac ce speaking English.

Speaking ac vi es also focus on pronuncia on. The SLP teaching team is used to working with students from around the world, and our teachers understand the specifi c pronuncia on challenges that speakers of diff erent languages face.

LIVE IN HOMESTAYStudents who choose homestay have an opportunity to live with a Canadian family during their me at YUELI. Homestay provides students a chance to experience a ‘Canadian’ expe-rience by sharing daily life with Canadians; to speak English outside of the classroom; and to have a suppor ve and com-fortable environment while living in Canada.

Our families are interested in hos ng interna onal students because they want to learn about other cultures; they want to welcome students to Canada; and they want to help stu-dents improve their English skills and learn about Canada. Our families have diff erent ethnic backgrounds, but all speak English at home. YUELI’s homestay families are fun and pro-vide a warm and welcoming environment for new students to Canada.

LIVE ON CAMPUSStudents can live in one of the dormitories on the York Uni-versity campus, within walking distance of classrooms, gym fa-cili es, on-campus restaurants, student centres, libraries and computer labs.

Residence is a smoke free environment, and smoking is not allowed indoors, as per Ontario law. Long distance telephone calls can be made with the purchase of a phone card. Residence includes laundry facili es, as well as communal kitchens. Cook-ing is not permi ed, but students can rent small fridges for their rooms.

York University Security Control Centre is open 24 hours a day / 365 days a year and houses a dispatch centre, Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), alarm monitoring equipment and a fi rst aid sta on.

York University Residence includes:

• Communal bathrooms on each fl oor• Female only sec ons• Laundry facili es• Common room, including a microwave, cable television, a communal fridge and mul ple chairs and sofas

A residence room includes:

Registra on and Payment for Courses and Accommoda on

YUELI accepts registra on for courses and accommoda on in person at YUELI’s offi ce, by mail, by fax, or online at:h p://www.yueli.yorku.ca/register/

The registra on fee and a minimum payment for each course are required to register and receive a Le er of Acceptance. This le er can be used to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa and Study Permit for Canada.

Payment can be made by credit card (Visa or Mastercard only), Bank Transfer, Money Order, Cer fi ed Cheque or Direct Debit (in person only). All payments should be made payable to York University and must be made in Canadian funds.

For bank transfers, please note that the student or payee is responsible for ensuring that YUELI receives the en re total amount due. Please ensure any bank transfer fees are included in the total amount sent.

Moving between YUELI programsIf a student on a current YUELI program wishes to switch to another YUELI program with a higher registra on fee, the diff erence should be paid by the student.

VISAS (Temporary Resident Visas and Study Permits)Visitors to Canada are permi ed to study in a language course for a period of 6 months on a Temporary Resident Visa. A Study Permit is required for any period longer than 6 months. Detailed informa on on the Visa or Study Permit applica on process is available from the nearest Canadian Embassy or High Commission, or at: h p://www.cic.gc.ca/

Healthcare InsuranceEmergency healthcare insurance is mandatory for all full- me YUELI students and is provided by StudentGuard. Informa on on StudentGuard healthcare insurance can be found at: (h p://www.guard.me/)

Students with OHIP are required to inform YUELI at the me of registra on and to present an OHIP card on the fi rst day of classes.

For full- me programs, students without emergency healthcare insurance will not be permi ed to study at YUELI.
