Dear Teachers,

Are you ready for some summer professional development fun? Join us for the Eighth

Annual CUSD K-12 Summer Institute.

Research says that quality professional development is:

Job-embedded

Sustained over time

Collegial and teacher-centered

Integrated with existing school improvement plans

Interactive so that teachers are engaged

The Ceres Summer Institute offers all of the above. Participating in the Ceres Summer

Institute will provide you with the tools you need to get the school year off to a strong start.

Our goal is to support you in every way possible as you strive to meet the diverse needs of

your students.

On the Road to Common Core Bring a colleague with you to share in the learning fun!

Participation in the Summer Institute is FREE to CUSD employees.

You will have the opportunity to make materials and find resources for immediate use

in your classroom.

You will also leave each session with instructional materials related to the session’s

topic as a thank you for attending.

You will be able to choose morning sessions or afternoon sessions or a combination of

both.

You can choose to attend all or just some of the days and offerings.

AND

Brandman University is pleased to offer 1 or 2 graduate-level professional

development credits to teachers participating in the 8th Annual Ceres Summer

Institute. Please check our CUSD Website starting August 1, 2013, for more

information and to register for this opportunity. (You must attend any 5 or 10 sessions

in order to register.)

Pick Your Strand!

Each CSI session will be labeled with the strand name(s) of its target audience.

Please choose the session(s) that specifically pertain to you. Whatever you

choose, you will receive the best we have to offer!!

o (GS) General Session: These sessions are open to any teacher. Grade levels will

be listed in the course description.

o (CCDI) Ceres Certification of Direct Instruction’ Institute: You MUST be

pre-registered to attend these sessions. Please contact Sandi Vera in Ed

Services to sign up (ext.1111). The CCDI Institute is a two full day session

series. You must commit to all sessions. For CUSD teachers who are seeking

Ceres Certification of Direct Instruction, these sessions will meet the

Professional Development portion of the certification process. Additional

implementation activities will follow.

o (NTD) New to District Session: All new teachers and administrators will attend

sessions labeled NTD (New to District) Monday through Friday. On Friday,

teachers will be released to their sites after the morning session.

Space is limited so reserve your spot now. Ceres coaches look forward to supporting your professional growth at CSI and

throughout the year. Please remember to call on us to partner with you in your efforts

to help every student succeed.

101-Engaging Students in a Learning Centered Classroom: Part 1, K-12

These strategies are CUSD Norms and are expected to be embedded into everyday lesson

planning and delivery which will lead to improved classroom management and student success.

102-Academic Conversations, 7-12 (GS)

Liz Colby and Ronda Munoz How will you infuse academic conversations into your class? This session will give you the

opportunity to explore ways to implement academic conversations into your lessons and tune up

your curriculum for the Common Core. Walk away with ideas that can be implemented in your

beginning of the year classroom norms and carried throughout the year.

103-Navigating Academic Conversations, K-6 (GS)

Sarah Olson and Alissa Martin Use Academic Conversations to teach critical thinking and content through quality questioning.

Aligned with Common Core, students develop conversational skills, collaborate in teams, express

divergent ideas, sharpen language and literacy, and cognitive demands with purpose and

meaning.

areas by implementing a management plan that is firm, fair and consistent while increasing student

achievement with a growth mindset

302-Cruise Through Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice, K-

12 (GS)

Sarah Olson and Marla Conteh Bring the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice to life in your classroom this year. Envision and plan for a problem-based classroom where students take ownership of their mathematical understanding.

303-Mobi/Interwrite Tablets-Beginning Level, K-12 (GS)

Christina Macklin and Kim Richter Whether you have never used one, have limited experience or are in need of a refresher course, this class I s for you. Topics will include: overview of tools and software, glance into the gallery, and a Q&A session. After taking this class you will have the power of technology in the palm of your hand! Bring your Mobi!!!

304-Mobi/Interwrite Tablets-Intermediate Level, K-12 (GS)

E Instruction If you have some experience using your Mobi in your classroom but want to know more about all of its capabilities, this session is for you. You will leave this session with new ways to incorporate this technology into your instruction. This will be a hands-on training in which the teachers will have their Mobi and their computers in front of them throughout the training. Please remember to bring your Mobi and charged Mobi Pen.

Tuesday-August 6, 2013 Session 4 Choices (12:30-3:00)

401-Infinite Campus, K-2 (NTD, GS)

Michelle Borges CUSD is now using Infinite Campus Report Cards in K-2 classrooms (including Transitional Kindergarten). This training will show teachers how to set up their IC Grade Book, use different IC reports, and easily create report cards using Infinite Campus tools.

402-Infinite Campus for New Teachers, 3-12 (NTD, GS)

Ilaen Marron and Brian Wise CUSD uses Infinite Campus for student information. In this training teachers will learn how to take classroom attendance and use the Infinite Campus grade book. They will learn how to look up information on their students such as parent’s names and home phone numbers. They will also learn what parents and students see in the Infinite Campus portal. The purpose of the training is to help teachers use these powerful tools to make their work easier and more effective.

403-Your ELD Road Map to Effective Stategies Across the Content, K-6

(GS)

Kim Richter, Alissa Martin, and Wendy Beltran Map out your instruction to support language and literacy development. First stop, the newly adopted ELD Standards. Pack your bags to include the four domains of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

404-ELD Strategies for Secondary, 7-12 (GS)

Marla Conteh, Liz Colby and Mary Ramer Participants will discuss the language needs of the ELs in their classes in regards to the rigorous new Common Core Aligned ELD Standards. You will receive exactly what you need to develop amazing content area lessons and facilitate language acquisition.

405-IEP Accommodations and Modifications: What a GE Teacher Needs to

Know! (GS)

Lucas Bradley, Whitley Freitas & Amy Bennett This presentation will cover common accommodations and modifications for auditory processing delays, visual-perceptual deficits, difficulty with writing, and poor attending skills. These strategies often help students with learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, and other disabilities access general education curriculum.

501-Direct Instruction Institute: Drivers Manual for Effective Instruction,

K-12 (CCDI, NTD)

This 2 full-day institute is the first step in earning the Ceres Certificate of Direct Instruction. Participants will connect all of the components of an engaging Direct Instruction lesson plan. Teachers will leave prepared to be drivers of effective instruction. Please remember to bring your Common Core Book.

502-CCDI Refresher, K-12 (CCDI)

*This is a full day session for those who completed CCDI days 1-4. You must register

for both session 502 (Morning Session and 602 (Afternoon Session) to participate.

Did you go through CCDI training a while ago? Are you ready to polish up previously learned skills and incorporate new strategies into your teaching presentations? New questioning strategies and management tools gleaned from DataWORKS will be reviewed. Come to the CCDI Refresher and leave with a newly designed lesson. A lesson which will enhance student achievement and you may choose to use it to ease your journey to CCDI certification.

503-Level II Strategies, K-12 (GS)

Marla Conteh and Megan Uhrich Do your higher level questions need a tune-up? Would you like to refine your Level II Strategies? Explore how higher level questions and level II strategies can facilitate student success during daily lessons. This session will incorporate planning time to develop higher level questions in your lessons. You will leave with a higher level questions road map for your next lesson.
