This is the rock cycle. Every Choice that you make will lead you to a new and exciting part of this cycle.

Each move that you make will take you 1,000 years!

Page 3: You Rock! You are now transforming into a rock… You are no longer human, you will be melted, cooled, compressed and crushed! Good Luck!

Your goal is to collect at least two minerals from each station. You get a mineral for finishing an

activity at a station.

First you must decide where to begin your journey.

As a group, select a rock to begin with.

You are an igneous Rock!

Activity 1:1) Read about the formation of

igneous rocks. Remember to write your thoughts down or draw a picture.

2) Observe the three igneous rocks at your station and complete the chart.

3) In your journals, tell of the first place you landed and what you think it would be like to be an igneous rock.

Click when finished.

You are an igneous rock, again!Activity 2:

1) Igneous rock is cooled magma or lava. Rock candy forms in much the same way. Use the sheet and materials supplied to make your own rock candy!

2) In your journals, tell of how your rock is cooled to form igneous rock, just like sugar cools to form rock candy.

Click when finished.

You are an igneous rock, Again!

Activity 3:

1) Here you are back again! You must love to be be cooled magma or lava. This time you should read about intrusive and extrusive igneous rock. Be sure to write or draw your thoughts as you read.

2) Next, you will be conducting an experiment! You will make chocolate magma candy, but you will let half dry in a cool place, and half dry in a warm place. Then, you will observe the differences!

3) Finally, you will need to add information to your journal about this part of your journey!

Click when finished.

Decision time! Now that you completed your activity as an igneous rock.

Would you like to be…

Heated and melted!

Squeezed and pressed!

Smashed into bits!

You are a sedimentary Rock!

Activity 1:1) Read about the formation of

sedimentary rocks. Remember to write your thoughts down or draw a picture.

2) Observe the three sedimentary rocks at your station and complete the chart.

3) In your journals, tell of the first place you landed and what you think it would be like to be a sedimentary rock.

You are a sedimentary rock, again!

Activity 2:

1) Sedimentary rock is created other rock being broken up into smaller pieces and then cemented together again. Complete the conglomerate rock activity.

2) In your journals, tell of how rock is broken up and then made into rock again. You should describe what this feels like.

Click when finished.

You are a sedimentary rock, again!

Activity 3:

1) You are back again! You must love being smashed up into bits! This time, you will see how sediment is moved along a stream.

2) In your journals, tell of how sediment is moved so that it can be made into rock again. You should describe what this feels like.

Click when finished.

You are a metamorphic rock!

Activity 1:1) Read about the formation of

metamorphic rocks. Remember to write your thoughts down or draw a picture.

2) Observe the three metamorphic rocks at your station and complete the chart.

You are a metamorphic rock, again!

Activity 2:

1) Read about heat and pressure that causes metamorphic rock. Remember to write or draw your thoughts as you read.

2) Metamorphic rock is created by heat and pressure deep in the earth. Complete the bread activity to show how this happens.

3) In your journals, tell of how rock is broken up and then made into rock again. You should describe what this feels like.

Click when finished.

Activity 3:

1) Here you are back again! You must love to be heated and pressed until you melt! First, you will need to read about how heat and pressure can change rock. Remember to write or draw your thoughts.

2) Now, you will be using clay to demonstrate how one kind of rock changes into the other.

2) Finally, you will need to add information to your journal about this part of your journey!

UH OH!

You have just become part of a kid’s rock collection!

You must wait 100 years (1 minute) with your thumbs in your ears before you move onto the next place!

Click to go back.

Page 23: You Rock! You are now transforming into a rock… You are no longer human, you will be melted, cooled, compressed and crushed! Good Luck!

Uh oh!

You were accidentally eaten by a wild animal. You must wait 2 days (30 seconds) while you spin around in it’s digestive tract. Really, you have to spin!

Click to go back.

Page 24: You Rock! You are now transforming into a rock… You are no longer human, you will be melted, cooled, compressed and crushed! Good Luck!

Uh oh!

You are stuck in a stream for 1,000 years (2 minutes). You must flap your arms for that time until you move onto your next station.

Click to go back.
